Electrochemical determination of Cephalothin antibiotic by adsorptive stripping voltammetric technique

Optimization and analytical behavior of a morphine electrochemical sensor in environmental and biological samples based on graphite rod electrode using graphene/Co3O4 nanocomposite

In this research, a new sensor based on graphene/Co₃O₄ (Gr/Co₃O₄) nanocomposite was employed for electrochemically determination of morphine (MOR). The modifier was synthesized with a simple hydrothermal technique and well characterized using X-ray difraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) tools. The modified graphite rod electrode (GRE) was revealed a high electrochemical catalytic activity for the MOR oxidation and employed for the electroanalysis of trace MOR concentration by means of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique. At the optimum experimental factors, the resulting sensor offered a good response for MOR in the concentration range of 0.5-100.0 μM with a detection limit of 80 nM. In addition, the modified electrode demonstrated an acceptable selectivity, stability and reproducibility. This assay was also provided a valid platform for the detection of MOR in environmental and biological samples with acceptable recoveries and RSD in the range of 97.2-102.8% and 1.7-3.4%, respectively. Taking to the simplicity, low cost and short analysis time, this approach is suggested for clinical, environmental and forensic testing of MOR.

A state-of-the-art review on graphene-based nanomaterials to determine antibiotics by electrochemical techniques

Antibiotics might build up into the human body by foodstuff metabolism, posing a serious threat to human health and safety. Establishing simple and sensitive technology for quick antibiotic evaluation is thus extremely important. Nanomaterials (or NMTs) with the advantage of possessing merits such as remarkable optical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical capabilities have been highlighted as a piece of the best promising materials for rising new paths in the creation of the future generation biosensors. This paper presents the most recent advances in the use of graphene NMTs-based biosensors to determine antibiotics. Gr-NMTs (or graphene nanomaterials) have been used in the development of a biosensor for the electrochemical signal-transducing process. The rising issues and potential chances of this field are contained to give a plan for forthcoming research orientations. As a result, this review provides a comprehensive evaluation of the nanostructured electrochemical sensing approach for antibiotic residues in various systems. In this review, various electrochemical techniques such as CV, DPV, Stripping, EIS, LSV, chronoamperometry, SWV were employed to determine antibiotics. Additionally, this also demonstrates how graphene nanomaterials are employed to detect antibiotics.

Cephalothin: Review of Characteristics, Properties and Status of Analytical Methods

BACKGROUND

Cephalothin (CET), a first generation cephalosporin, is the most efficient cephalosporin against resistant microorganisms. Many studies found in literature and pharmacopeias proposes analytical methods and, as most commonly, HPLC and microbiological assays.

OBJECTIVE

This paper shows a brief review of analytical method to quantify CET with a green analytical chemistry approach.

METHODS

The research data were collected from the literature and official compendia.

RESULTS

Most of the analytical methods to determine CET were performed by HPLC and agar diffusion in pharmaceuticals, blood, urine or water. Other analytical methods were found, as UV, Vis, iodometry, fluorimetry, IR/Raman, electrochemical among others, but, in less quantity. One important aspect is that these methods use organic and toxic solvents like methanol and acetonitrile, and only about 4% of the methods found uses water as solvent.

CONCLUSIONS

In this way, researches about analytical methods focused on green analytical chemistry for CET are of great importance and very relevant to optimize its analysis in pharmaceutical industries and to guarantee the quality of the product. More than just the development of new techniques it is possible to enhance of the ones that already exists applying the green analytical chemistry principles. In this way, it will be possible to reduce the environment impacts caused by these analytical procedures.

HIGHLIGHTS

This work shows a brief review of literature and pharmacopeias of analytical methods to quantify CET. Its quality control can be updated to meet the needs of current analytical chemistry and to fit into sustainable and eco-friendly analyzes.

Recent Electrochemical Assays on Cephalosporins

Antibiotics are an important class among drugs because they are a significant agent to deal with infections. Cephalosporins are a very important group of antibiotics in the β-lactam class. The cephalosporins are semisynthetic antibiotics derived from products of the fungus Cephalosporium. Cephalosporins are classified as first, second, third, fourth, and advanced generation, based largely on their antibacterial spectrum and stability to β-lactamases. Electrochemical methods have been used for the determination of cephalosporin just as used in the determination of many antibiotic drugs. Electroanalytical methods present generally high sensitivity, low cost, low requirements, ease of preparation of the samples in a very short time, and a short analysis time. The most commonly used types are cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, square wave voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry. The aim of this review is to evaluate the advantages and uses of electroanalytical methods used in the determination of cephalosporins. In addition, current applications of the methods to the pharmaceutical analysis of cephalosporins will also be summarized in a table.

Determination of Cefalothin and Cefazolin in Human Plasma, Urine and Peritoneal Dialysate by UHPLC-MS/MS: application to a pilot pharmacokinetic study in humans

An ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method for the analysis of cefazolin and cefalothin in human plasma (total and unbound), urine and peritoneal dialysate has been developed and validated. Total plasma concentrations are measured following protein precipitation and are suitable for the concentration range of 1-500 µg/mL. Unbound concentrations are measured from ultra-filtered plasma acquired using Centrifree(®) devices and are suitable for the concentration range of 0.1-500 µg/mL for cefazolin and 1-500 µg/mL for cefalothin. The urine method is suitable for a concentration range of 0.1-20 mg/mL for cefazolin and 0.2-20 mg/mL for cefalothin. Peritoneal dialysate concentrations are measured using direct injection, and are suitable for the concentration range of 0.2-100 µg/mL for both cefazolin and cefalothin. The cefazolin and cefalothin plasma (total and unbound), urine and peritoneal dialysate results are reported for recovery, inter-assay precision and accuracy, and the lower limit of quantification, linearity, stability and matrix effects, with all results meeting acceptance criteria. The method was used successfully in a pilot pharmacokinetic study with patients with peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis, receiving either intraperitoneal cefazolin or cefalothin. Chromatographic studies of some cephalosporins on thin layers of silica gel G-zinc ferrocyanide

A simple, selective and precise thin-layer chromatographic method has been developed for the analysis of eight cephalosporin antibiotics, namely cephadroxil, cephalexin, cefixime, cefaclor, cefpodoxime proxetil, cefuroxime axetil, cefotaxime sodium and ceftriaxone sodium. The hR(F) values of these cephalosporins were investigated on silica gel G-zinc ferrocyanide layers. Mixing of zinc ferrocyanide with silica gel G resulted in a decrease in hR(F) values, removal of tailing and better resolutions. The influence of silica gel G-zinc ferrocyanide ratio and mobile phases on the chromatographic behavior of cephalosporins on thin layers was investigated. Cephalosporins were selectively separated in their binary and ternary synthetic mixtures and pharmaceutical formulations. Quantitative separations of cephalosporins from their synthetic mixtures were also achieved with good recoveries (97.8-100.3%).

The review covers most of the methods described for the analysis of these drugs in pure forms, in different pharmaceutical dosage forms and in biological fluids.
