Periosteal Chondroma of the Pelvis: An Uncommon Tumor in an Unusual Location

Periosteal chondromas (PCs) are rare tumors composed of hyaline cartilage that are typically present in long bones and tubular bones of the hand. These lesions are easily mistaken for other, more common tumors. This study reports a case of PC located in the posterior pelvis of a 24-year-old female. The patient initially presented with a four-month history of pelvic pain with a presumptive diagnosis of endometriosis. However, when an MRI was performed, a 6.0 cm x 5.6 cm x 4.5 cm mass was found along the right posterior ilium extending to the ipsilateral sacroiliac joint. The patient underwent intralesional excision and curettage of the mass. Histologic analysis of the excised lesion revealed a proliferation of chondrocytes and abundant hyaline cartilage without chondroblasts, further suggesting the diagnosis of PC. The current study highlights the unusual location of this rare tumor and alerts the physician of the clinical presentation and differential diagnosis.

Pediatric thoracic mass lesions: Beyond the common

Thoracic mass lesions can be categorized as originating in one of the three major compartments: a) chest wall and pleura, b) lung parenchyma and airways, c) mediastinum. While some of these, such as lymphoma, are common in both children and adults, others are rare and unique to childhood. The goal of this review is to familiarize radiologists with unusual but distinctive mass lesions of the pediatric thorax.

Successful surgical management of periosteal chondroma of the left second rib: a case report

We present a case of successfully resected periosteal chondroma of the left second rib in view of extremely rare occurrence of such cases and the success achieved in its management. A 12-year-old female child presented to our hospital with a swelling in the upper anterolateral aspect of the left chest wall. On chest X-ray and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT), it was diagnosed to be a case of osteochondroma of the second rib. The tumor was approached through a left posterolateral thoracotomy and parts of the first and second ribs were excised along with the tumor. Patient is now on outpatient follow-up and hemodynamically stable with no recurrence of symptoms. The histopathology revealed periosteal chondroma of the second rib with all margins of the resected mass being free of tumor suggesting complete excision. Patient is now on outpatient follow-up and hemodynamically stable with no recurrence of symptoms. Postoperative results were very satisfactory not only in terms of oncological clearance but also from the functional and cosmetic point of view. We believe our case is going to add to the very limited number of such cases available in literature.

Periosteal chondroma that presented as a subcutaneous mass in the ring finger

We present an unusual case of periosteal chondroma of the middle phalanx in the right ring finger that presented as a subcutaneous mass in a 21-year-old man. It was treated by marginal excision, with no postoperative local recurrence.

Multifocal periosteal chondromas in the ring finger of an adolescent boy: case report

We describe an unusual case of a 12-year-old boy who presented with a loss of motion in the ring finger caused by 2 separate periosteal chondromas involving the proximal and middle phalanges. Range of motion improved and recurrence did not occur at the 5-year follow-up after marginal excision of both lesions.

A report of a rare phalangeal periosteal chondroma of the foot

Periosteal chondroma is a benign, slow-growing cartilaginous tumor that typically occurs at the metaphysis of long tubular bones beneath the periosteal membrane. A case is presented of a 42-year-old male who developed a firm, tender, uneven mass encircling the lateral, dorsal, and medial aspects of the right second proximal phalanx following a traumatic event. The mass was excised en toto and histopathologic findings are presented.

Pediatric rib lesions: a 13-year experience

BACKGROUND

Rib lesions in the pediatric population are rare but significant processes and are often neoplastic.

METHODS

All patients with primary rib lesions evaluated by the Department of Surgery at Children's Hospital Boston from 1992 to 2005 were studied. The patient's diagnosis, sex, symptoms and their duration, radiologic evaluation, biopsy status, surgical procedure, and follow-up were assessed.

RESULTS

Thirty-three patients, ages 3 to 23 years (median, 12.7 years), were evaluated. Sixteen patients (48%) had benign and 17 (52%) had malignant lesions. Within the benign cohort of 16 patients, there were 6 osteochondromas, 4 aneurysmal bone cysts, and 2 fibrous dysplasias as well as 1 of each of the following: enchondroma, periosteal chondroma, eosinophilic granuloma, and chondrophyte. Within the malignant cohort of 17 patients, 13 were diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, 3 with osteogenic sarcoma, and 1 with chondrosarcoma. The sex distribution for the malignant group was 11 (65%) females and 6 (35%) males.

CONCLUSIONS

Rib tumors are rare entities in the pediatric population. However, a significant number of rib lesions are malignant. Therefore, proper diagnosis and expeditious treatment are critical.

Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation and periosteal chondroma: a comparative report and review of the literature

Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation and periosteal chondroma are rare, benign, bony lesions that may present in the hand. Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation was first reported in the literature by Nora in 1983, and periosteal chondroma was first reported by Lichtenstein in 1952. This report provides a unique side-by-side comparison of these lesions, illustrating each with a clinical vignette. This report, coupled with a thorough review of the literature, serves to demonstrate that the history and physical exam characteristics, as well as the radiographic and gross appearances, are insufficient to differentiate between the two lesions. Histopathologic examination is required to confirm the diagnosis.
