A Foley catheter 'the jack of all trades': a literature review of its common and novel uses

The Foley catheter is one of the most commonly used devices in modern surgical practice. Developed for draining the urinary bladder, this humble catheter has been employed for many other purposes ranging from urine output monitoring to complex urological investigations. Over time, it has evolved into being applied in more complex and innovative ways in various other specialties apart from urology. In this review article, we describe some of the common and novel uses of this deceptively simple device, and discuss the scope of its application in modern medicine.

Case Report: Neonatal genital prolapse in a pair of premature Twins

Neonatal genital prolapse is a rare situation. This report presents a unique case involving a pair of premature female twins who both developed vaginal wall prolapse without any neurological deficits. Multiple factors such as selective intrauterine growth restriction, feeding intolerance, extrauterine growth retardation, and elevated intra-abdominal pressure after birth may have contributed to the development of this phenomenon. Notably, the severity of prolapse was more pronounced in the twin with lower birth weight and smaller for gestational age. After a five-month follow-up period, the twins' prolapsed vaginal wall fully retracted due to a combination of conservative treatment and enhanced nutritional support.

Case Report: Management of a Rare Case of Neonatal Uterovaginal Prolapse Using a Vaginal Plug

Congenital neonatal uterovaginal prolapse is a rare occurrence that is usually detected after delivery. Most cases are managed conservatively, although there are more invasive approaches to management. We report a case of a neonate with uterovaginal prolapse that we successfully managed conservatively. In this case, a vaginal plug made from a wet cotton ball and condom was inserted into the vaginal canal. To further reinforce the vaginal plug, a pressure garment was applied over the neonate's diaper. A trial of noninvasive methods that are simple and cost-effective should always precede other, more invasive methods in managing cases such as this.

Uterovaginal prolapse following suspected sexual abuse to a child: a case report

Background

Uterovaginal prolapse occurs when damaged connective tissues allow the uterus to drop into the vagina. Rare in children, uterovaginal prolapse can occur as a result of violent sexual assault. This case is being reported because there has been no previous report of acquired pelvic organ prolapse following trauma suspected to be sexual abuse in a child in our setting.

Case presentation

Two-year-old female presented to our hospital with a 3-day history of abnormal protrusion from the vagina and a 2-day history of bleeding per vagina. Traumatic rupture of the hymen was observed. The urethra was not edematous or hyperemic. The reduction was done successfully under sedation and maintained using a crepe bandage. There was no recurrence after 3-month follow-up.

Conclusions

Uterovaginal prolapse presenting among children below 5 years is rare. If bleeding per vagina is reported in a child, the clinician should be aware of the possibility of uterovaginal prolapse.

Congenital Uterovaginal Prolapse in a Newborn

BACKGROUND

Uterovaginal prolapse is a rare condition in newborns which is usually associated with spinal cord defects. It is usually diagnosed at birth. Different treatment options have been proposed for genital prolapse in newborns. Most of the treatment options recommended are conservative; radical approach is rarely suggested for the treatment of these cases.

CASE DETAILS

We report a 6-hour-old newborn that was diagnosed to have congenital uterovaginal prolapse and was successfully managed conservatively with digital reduction of the mass and strapping of both legs together.

CONCLUSION

Congenital uterovaginal prolapse in newborns can be managed conservatively with simple digital reduction followed by strapping of the legs together; this approach is simple and cost-effective and has no associated complications.

Congenital uterovaginal prolapse present at birth

Uterovaginal prolapse presenting at birth is very rare. The cause is attributed to conditions that can cause poor innervation or weakness of the pelvic floor muscle and the supporting ligaments. Different methods of treatment have been used in the past to reduce and maintain reduction of the prolapse. We report a case of a congenital UVP in a day old child noticed at delivery. He was delivered breech and had a sacral dimple with a tuft of hair. He was successfully managed conservatively with digital reduction and strapping of the buttocks down to the legs with crepe bandage for 72 h.

[Post-trauma uterine prolaps in infant. A case report]

We report on one case of genital prolaps that happened after an astride fell in a girl aged 7-year-old. The manual reducing of the cervix followed by putting a blown Foley catheter n(o) 8 intravaginally for 1 week has allowed good results. Post-trauma uterine prolaps in infant is a rare condition supposed to be due to connective tissue weakness. Conservative treatment should be as possible applied at this age.
