Abstract
OBJECTIVES Toothpaste plays a pivotal role in oral and dental hygiene. This cross-sectional study not only investigates the constituents of toothpastes available in the market and their frequency across different brands but also delves into the potential side effects, irritations, or unfavourable outcomes of these constituents, emphasizing the broader health and environmental implications. METHODS The largest of the five major chain markets in each district of Istanbul was visited, and adult toothpastes were included in this study. All the constituents that make up the toothpaste were individually recorded in an Excel database. Subsequently, literature regarding the purposes, toxic and potential side effects of each ingredient was gathered using databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed and ScienceDirect. The percentages of these ingredients' occurrence among all the toothpastes were calculated, and the ingredients were categorized into 15 distinct groups based on their usage purposes. RESULTS There were 160 different varieties of toothpaste belonging to 19 different brands on the market shelves. Although a total of 244 different ingredients were identified, only 78 of them were included in the study. Among the analysed toothpaste types, 105 of them were found to contain 1450 ppm fluoride, whilst 26 toothpaste variants were discovered to have fluoride levels below this value. Among the various ingredients analysed, particular attention was drawn to commonly debated compounds in oral care products. Specifically, titanium dioxide was found in 68% (n = 111) of the varieties, sodium lauryl sulphate in 67% (n = 108) and paraben in 2% (n = 4), respectively. CONCLUSION Whilst certain ingredients may raise concerns for potential side effects and health considerations within the human body, the toothpaste has long been regarded as an indispensable tool for maintaining optimal oral and dental health. However, gaining a deeper understanding and conducting research on each constituent that comprises the toothpaste, as well as raising awareness in this regard, holds significant importance for human health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Mouthwashes, a cornerstone of oral and dental hygiene, play a pivotal role in combating the formation of dental plaque, a leading cause of periodontal disease and dental caries. This study aimed to review the composition of mouthwashes found on retail shelves in Turkey and evaluate their prevalence and side effects, if any. METHODS The mouthwashes examined were sourced from the 5 largest chain stores in each district of Istanbul. A comprehensive list of the constituents was meticulously recorded. The research was supported by an extensive compilation of references from scholarly databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. Through rigorous analysis, the relative proportions of mouthwash ingredients and components were determined. RESULTS A total of 45 distinctive variations of mouthwashes, representing 17 prominent brands, were identified. Amongst the 116 ingredients discovered, 70 were evaluated for potential adverse effects and undesirable side effects. The aroma of the mouthwash (n = 45; 100%), as welll as their sodium fluoride (n = 28; 62.22%), sodium saccharin (n = 29; 64.44%), sorbitol (n = 21; 46.6%), and propylene glycol (n = 28; 62.22%) content were the main undesireable features. CONCLUSIONS The limited array of mouthwashes found on store shelves poses a concern for both oral and public health. Furthermore, the intricate composition of these products, consisting of numerous ingredients with the potential for adverse effects, warrants serious attention. Both clinicians and patients should acknowledge the importance and unwarranted side effects of the compnents of the mouthwashes.

Abstract
We describe the histological tissue damage and compare the healing process in 16 dairy calves disbudded at a mean age of 6 days by cauterization or alkaline caustic paste application. Biopsies were taken 2 days (T2) and 2 weeks (T14) after disbudding from sedated calves treated with local anaesthetic and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. At T2, the cauterized horn buds generally had eosinophilic coagulative necrosis of the epidermis and superficial dermis, bordered basally by a neutrophilic demarcation zone. Lateral to the direct heat contact area, dermal blood vessels were thrombosed, with wall damage and perivascular neutrophils. In the caustic paste-treated horn buds, the epidermis and dermis had diffuse full-thickness liquefactive necrosis directly under the paste contact area. The necrosis spread laterally in the dermis beyond the area of paste contact and was bordered by a neutrophilic infiltrate. At T14, the cauterized horn buds had epidermal to superficial dermal ulceration and crusting, dermal neutrophilic infiltration and granulation tissue formation. In contrast, most of the caustic paste-treated horn buds consisted of a superficial dermal crust or predominantly necrotic tissue fragments. The remaining viable areas had histiocytic inflammation with peripheral neutrophils and early granulation tissue formation. Caustic paste disbudding caused poorly demarcated lesions that were more severe and extensive and took longer to heal than those due to cautery. Cauterization induced a more intense acute reaction adjacent to the primary lesion compared with caustic paste.

Abstract
Esophageal biomechanical studies are being performed to understand structural changes resulting from stretches during repair of esophageal atresias as well as to obtain biomechanical values for tissue-engineered esophagus. The present study offers insights into ultrastructural changes after stretching of the ovine esophagus using uniaxial stretch tests. In vitro uniaxial stretching was performed on esophagi (n = 16) obtained from the abattoir within 4-6 h of 1-month-old lambs. Esophagi were divided into 4 groups (4 esophagi/group): control, Group1 (G1), Group2 (G2), Group3 (G3) stretched to 20%, 30% and 40% of their original length respectively. Force and lengthening were measured with 5 cycles performed on every specimen. Transmission electron microscopic (TEM) studies were performed on the 4 groups. During observational TEM study of the control group there were no significant differences in muscle cell structure or extracellular matrix. In all stretched groups varying degrees of alterations were identified. The degree of damage correlated linearly with the increasing level of stretch. Distance between the cells showed significant difference between the groups (control (μ = 0.41 μm, SD = 0.26), G1 (μ = 1.36 μm, SD = 1.21), G2 (μ = 2.8 μm, SD = 1.83), and G3 (μ = 3.01 μm, SD = 2.06). The diameter of the cells (control μ = 19.87 μm, SD = 3.81; G1 μ = 20.38 μm, SD = 4.45; G2 μ = 21.7 μm, SD = 6.58; G3 μ = 24.48 μm, SD = 6.69) and the distance between myofibrils (control μ = 0.23 μm, SD = 0.08; G1 μ = 0.27 μm, SD = 0.08; G2 μ = 0.4 μm, SD = 0.15; G3 μ = 0.61 μm, SD = 0.2) were significantly different as well ( p < 0.05 was considered to be significant). Esophageal stretching > 30% alters the regular intracellular and extracellular structure of the esophageal muscle and leads to disruption of intra- and extracellular bonds. These findings could provide valuable insights into alterations in the microscopic structure of the esophagus in esophageal atresias repaired under tension as well as the basis for mechanical characterization for tissue engineering of the esophagus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Esophageal biomechanical studies are important to understand structural changes resulting from stretches during repair of esophageal atresias as well as to obtain values to compare with the biomechanics of tissue-engineered esophagus in the future. This study aimed to investigate light microscopic changes after uniaxial stretching of the ovine esophagus. METHODS In vitro uniaxial stretching was performed on esophagi (n = 20) of 1-month-old lambs within 4-6 h post-mortem. Esophagi were divided into 5 groups: control and stretched (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4). Force and lengthening were measured with 5 cycles performed on every specimen using a PBS organ bath at 37 °C. Histological studies were performed on the 5 groups. RESULTS Low forces of ~ 2 N (N) were sufficient for a 1.2-1.25 stretch in the 1st cycle, whereas a three times higher force (~ 6 N) was needed for a stretch of 1.3. In the 2nd to 5th cycle, the tissue weakened and a force of ~ 3 N was sufficient for a stretch of 1.3. Histologically, in the 1.3-1.4 stretch groups, rupture of muscle fibers and capillaries were observed, respectively. Changes in mucosa and collagen fibers could not be observed. CONCLUSIONS These results offer norm values from the native esophagus to compare with the biomechanics of future tissue-engineered esophagus. Esophageal stretching > 1.3 leads to tears in muscle fibers and to rupture of capillaries. These findings can explain the decrease in microcirculation and scarring in mobilized tissue and possibly offer clues to impaired motility in esophagus atresias repaired under excessive tension.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Esophagus tissue engineering holds promises to overcome the limitations of the presently employed esophageal replacement procedures. This study investigated 5 animal models for esophageal submucosal glands (ESMG) to identify models appropriate for regenerative medicine applications. Furthermore, this study aimed to measure geometric parameters of ESMG that could be utilized for fabrication of ESMG-specific scaffolds for esophagus tissue engineering applications. METHODS Ovine, avian, bovine, murine, and porcine esophagus were investigated using Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE), Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS), and Alcian Blue (AB), with AB applied in 3 pH levels (0.2, 1.0, and 2.5) to detect sulphated mucous. Celleye® (version F) was employed to gain parametric data on ESMGs (size, perimeter, distance to lumen, and acini concentration) necessary for scaffold fabrication. RESULTS Murine, bovine, and ovine esophagus were devoid of ESMG. Avian esophagus demonstrated sulphated acid mucous producing ESMGs with a holocrine secretion pattern, whereas sulphated acid and neutral mucous producing ESMGs with a merocrine secretion pattern were observed in porcine esophagus. Distance of ESMGs to lumen ranged from 127-340 μm (avian) to 916-983 μm (porcine). ESMGs comprised 35% (avian) to 45% (porcine) area of the submucosa. ESMG had an area of 125000 μm2 (avian) to 580000 μm2 (porcine). CONCLUSION Avian and porcine esophagus possesses ESMGs. However, porcine esophagus correlates with data available on human ESMGs. Geometric and parametric data obtained from ESMG are valuable for the fabrication of ESMG-specific scaffolds for esophagus tissue engineering using the hybrid construct approach.

Abstract
PURPOSE Esophageal replacement surgery has been used to treat long-gap esophageal atresia, caustic esophageal stricture, and esophageal avulsion. Here, we report total esophageal transplantation in rats without vascular anastomosis as an option for esophageal replacement surgery. METHODS Fourteen total segments of esophageal transplants were harvested from 24-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats using a harvesting procedure. The segments were transplanted through the mediastinum in the esophageal bed of 15-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats without adjacent vascular anastomosis using the transhiatal pull-up technique. The ends of the transplanted esophagus were ostomized using cervical and abdominal esophagostomies. An immunosuppressive-treated (IT) group (n = 7) received cyclosporine and cotrimoxazole for 10 days, while an untreated (UT) group (n = 7) received only cotrimoxazole for 10 days. On post-operative day 10, the rats were sacrificed, and the transplant and recipient esophagi were evaluated macroscopically and histopathologically. RESULTS All transplantations were successful and all transplanted rats survived. Upon macroscopic evaluation, no evidence of complications was observed and all transplanted esophagi in the two groups appeared to exhibit excellent firm tissue; however, mild necrosis was observed in the cervical end of the transplant in one rat in the IT group. Histopathologic examination showed a viable esophageal structure in all rats. Inflammation and muscular atrophy were lower in the IT group than in the UT group, whereas vascularity was higher in the IT group than in the UT group. CONCLUSION Total esophageal transplantation was performed directly without vascular anastomosis into recipients in a rat model. This procedure should be done in larger animal models before being attempted in humans.
