Adsorption of porphyrin and carminic acid on TiO2 nanoparticles: A photo-active nano-hybrid material for hybrid bulk heterojunction solar cells

Selected organic dyes (carminic acid, pyrocatechol violet and dithizone) sensitized metal (silver, neodymium) doped TiO2/ZnO nanostructured materials: A photoanode for hybrid bulk heterojunction solar cells

A photoactive nanohybrid material consisting of pyrocatechol violet, carminic acid and dithizone dyes functionalized silver and neodymium-doped TiO₂/ZnO nanostructured materials is reported here, as photoactive blend, for solid-state dye sensitized solar cell. First of all we synthesized metals (silver, neodymium) doped (TiO₂) Titanium oxide nanoparticles and their nanocomposites (TiO₂/ZnO, M-TiO₂/ZnO) using the sol-gel and reflux technique, respectively. The synthesized samples were then characterized by UV-Visible spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction Analysis (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX), and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Optical studies were done through UV-Visible spectroscopy and the absorption spectra were used to calculate band gaps. The value of the energy gap for TiO₂ nanoparticles is 3.10 eV which was gradually tuned to 2.47 eV after incorporating metals (Ag and Nd) and forming respective nanocomposites. X-Ray diffraction Analysis (XRD) patterns revealed the purity and crystallinity in samples. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the irregular morphology (nanorods and spherical shaped) of ZnO and TiO₂ nanostructures respectively. The elemental composition of nanomaterials was successfully investigated using energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). In the absence of any impurities, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to identify the functional groups in synthesized material. For device fabrication, a solid-state electrolyte, P3HT, a hole conducting polymer was used. Characterization of fabricated solar cells was done using I-V measurements. Under simulated solar irradiation, the DSSC based on pyrocatechol violet sensitized neodymium doped TiO₂/ZnO nanohybrid materials exhibited the best PCE (power conversion efficiency) of 2.38 % and significantly improved Jsc (short circuit current density) of 15.68 mA/cm² as compared to carminic acid and dithizone in photovoltaic measurements. The improved power conversion efficiency of this device is ascribed to the particle size, increased dye adsorption, increased surface area and thus improved short circuit current density (Jsc).

Efficient Sunlight Harvesting by A4 β-Pyrrolic Substituted ZnII Porphyrins: A Mini-Review

Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs) are a highly promising alternative to conventional photovoltaic silicon-based devices, due to the potential low cost and the interesting conversion efficiencies. A key-role is played by the dye, and porphyrin sensitizers have drawn great interest because of their excellent light harvesting properties mimicking photosynthesis. Indeed, porphyrins are characterized by strong electronic absorption bands in the visible region up to the near infrared and by long-lived π^* singlet excited states. Moreover, the presence of four meso and eight β-pyrrolic positions allows a fine tuning of their photoelectrochemical properties through structural modification. Trans-A₂BC push-pull Zn^II porphyrins, characterized by a strong and directional electron excitation process along the push-pull system, have been extensively investigated. On the other hand, A₄ β-pyrrolic substituted tetraaryl Zn^II porphyrins, which incorporate a tetraaryl porphyrinic core as a starting material, have received lower attention, even if they are synthetically more attractive and show several advantages such as a more sterically hindered architecture and enhanced solubility in most common organic solvents. The present contribution intends to review the most prominent A₄ β-substituted Zn^II porphyrins reported in the literature so far for application in DSSCs, focusing on the strategies employed to enhance the light harvesting capability of the dye and on a comparison with meso-substituted analogs.

Eosin-Y sensitized core-shell TiO2-ZnO nano-structured photoanodes for dye-sensitized solar cell applications

In the current investigation, TiO₂ and TiO₂-ZnO (core-shell) spherical nanoparticles were synthesized by simple combined hydrolysis and refluxing method. A TiO₂ core nanomaterial on the shell material of ZnO was synthesized by utilizing variable ratios of ZnO. The structural characterization of TiO₂-ZnO core/shell nanoparticles were done by XRD analysis. The spherical structured morphology of the TiO₂-ZnO has been confirmed through field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies. The UV-visible spectra of TiO₂-ZnO nanostructures were also compared with the pristine TiO₂ to investigate the shift of wavelength. The TiO₂-ZnO core/shell nanoparticles at the interface efficiently collect the photogenarated electrons from ZnO and also ZnO act a barrier for reduced charge recombination of electrolyte and dye-nanoparticles interface. This combination improved the light absorption which induced the charge transfer ability and dye loading capacity of core-shell nanoparticles. An enhancement in the short circuit current (J_sc) from 1.67 mA/cm² to 2.1 mA/cm² has been observed for TiO₂-ZnObased photoanode (with platinum free counter electrode), promises an improvement in the energy conversion efficiency by 57% in comparison with that of the DSSCs based on the pristine TiO₂. Henceforth, TiO₂-ZnO photoelectrode in ZnO will effectively act as barrier at the interface of TiO₂-ZnO and TiO₂, ensuring the potential for DSSC application.
