Functional metal sulfides and selenides for the removal of hazardous dyes from Water

Preparation and Characterization of TiO2-Coated Hollow Glass Beads for Functionalization of Deproteinized Natural Rubber Latex via UVA-Activated Photocatalytic Degradation

The photochemical degradation of natural rubber (NR) is a prevalent method used to modify its inherent properties. Natural rubber, predominantly derived from the Hevea Brasiliensis tree, exhibits an exceptionally high molecular weight (MW), often reaching a million daltons (Da). This high MW restricts its solubility in various solvents and its reactivity with polar compounds, thereby constraining its versatile applications. In our previous work, we employed TiO2 in its powdered form as a photocatalyst for the functionalization of NR latex. However, the post-process separation and reuse of this powder present substantial challenges. In this present study, we aimed to functionalize deproteinized NR (DPNR) latex. We systematically reduced its MW via photochemical degradation under UVA irradiation facilitated by H2O2. To enhance the efficiency of the degradation process, we introduced TiO2-coated hollow glass beads (TiO2-HGBs) as photocatalysts. This approach offers the advantage of easy collection and repeated reuse. The modified DPNR showed a reduction in its number-average MW from 9.48 × 105 to 0.28 × 105 Da and incorporated functional groups, including hydroxyl, carbonyl, and epoxide. Remarkably, the TiO2-HGBs maintained their performance over seven cycles of reuse. Due to their superior efficacy, TiO2-HGBs stand out as promising photocatalysts for the advanced functionalization of NR across various practical applications.

Synthesis and Characterization of Late Transition Metal Complexes of Mono-Acetate Pendant Armed Ethylene Cross-Bridged Tetraazamacrocycles with Promise as Oxidation Catalysts for Dye Bleaching

Ethylene cross-bridged tetraazamacrocycles are known to produce kinetically stable transition metal complexes that can act as robust oxidation catalysts under harsh aqueous conditions. We have synthesized ligand analogs with single acetate pendant arms that act as pentadentate ligands to Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn. These complexes have been synthesized and characterized, including the structural characterization of four Co and Cu complexes. Cyclic voltammetry demonstrates that multiple oxidation states are stabilized by these rigid, bicyclic ligands. Yet, redox potentials of the metal complexes are modified compared to the "parent" ligands due to the pendant acetate arm. Similarly, gains in kinetic stability under harsh acidic conditions, compared to parent complexes without the pendant acetate arm, were demonstrated by a half-life seven times longer for the cyclam copper complex. Due to the reversible, high oxidation states available for the Mn and Fe complexes, the Mn and Fe complexes were examined as catalysts for the bleaching of three commonly used pollutant model dyes (methylene blue, methyl orange, and Rhodamine B) in water with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant. The efficient bleaching of these dyes was observed.

Ternary Zn1-xNixSe nanostructures as efficient photocatalysts for detoxification of hazardous Congo red, methyl orange, and chrome yellow dyes in wastewater sources

Water contamination by hazardous organic pollutants poses an extreme threat to the environment and globally endangers aquatic life and human health. Hence, the removal of toxic organic effluents from water sources is necessary to ensure a healthy green environment. To this end, a new class of emerging, visible-light-driven Zn- and Ni-based ternary metal-selenide (Zn_1-xNi_xSe) nanophotocatalysts, with tunable nanostructures via regulation of the stoichiometric ratios of Zn and Ni, were synthesized for efficient water purification by a facile one-pot hydrothermal process. These catalysts exhibit outstanding porous properties, with large surface areas and average particle sizes of around 80 ± 10 nm. The as-prepared ternary Zn_1-xNi_xSe catalysts enable improved optical properties, intrinsic conductivity, bandgap reductions, and large numbers of active sites compared with pristine materials, thereby exhibiting outstanding degradation properties against various dye molecules, including Congo red, methyl orange, and chrome-IV upon visible light irradiation. The improved photodegradation capabilities of the Zn_1-xNi_xSe catalysts may be attributed to the synergistic combinations of Zn and Ni selenides, which in turn minimize the recombination rates of the photogenerated carriers compared to their individual constituents. These findings clearly demonstrate that the proposed ternary Zn_1-xNi_xSe catalysts could be potentially used to remove toxic organic contaminants from industrial wastewater.

Ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents for the recovery of phenolic compounds: effect of ionic liquids structure and process parameters

Water pollution is a severe and challenging issue threatening the sustainable development of human civilization. Besides other pollutants, waste fluid streams contain phenolic compounds. These have an adverse effect on the human health and marine ecosystem due to their toxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic nature. Therefore, it is necessary to remove such phenolic pollutants from waste stream fluids prior to discharging to the environment. Different methods have been proposed to remove phenolic compounds from wastewater, including extraction using ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvent (DES), a class of organic salts having melting point below 100 °C and tunable physicochemical properties. The purpose of this review is to present the progress in utilizing ILs and DES for phenolic compound extraction from waste fluid streams. The effects of IL structural characteristics, such as anion type, cation type, alkyl chain length, and functional groups will be discussed. In addition, the impact of key process parameters such as pH, phenol concentration, phase ratio, and temperature will be also described. More importantly, several ideas for addressing the limitations of the treatment process and improving its efficiency and industrial viability will be presented. These ideas may form the basis for future studies on developing more effective IL-based processes for treating wastewaters contaminated with phenolic pollutants, to address a growing worldwide environmental problem.

Transition metal selenides and diselenides: Hydrothermal fabrication, investigation of morphology, particle size and and their applications in photocatalyst

This review investigates hydrothermal synthesis of metal selenides and diselenides. Briefly, structures, applications and formation mechanisms are studied. The strategies for developing metal selenides, including NiSe, NiSe₂, Ni₃Se₂, CdSe, FeSe₂, MnSe₂, CoSe, CuSe, Cu_1.8Se, CuSe₂, Cu₃Se₂ and ZnSe are discussed. More of 50 hydrothermal methods used for the synthesis of metal selenides are discussed. As well as the investigation of the photocatalytic activities of these metal selenides are followed by different synthesis methods and strategies employed for the synthesis of them.

Efficiency of Sawdust as Low-Cost Adsorbent for Dyes Removal

In recent years, the removal of dyes from wastewater has attracted considerable attention due to their harmful effects to ecosystem and human health. Adsorption as a facile and effective technique has been widely used to eliminate a large variety of dyes from aqueous solutions. Activated carbon is the most preferred adsorbent to treat wastewater but its use is limited because of high cost. Therefore, several low-cost and natural materials and wastes have been used as precursors for the preparation of alternative adsorbents. Among them, sawdust as an abundant and low-cost by-product has been explored as adsorbent for the removal of dyes from wastewater. This review focuses on the various sawdust used as a precursor for the preparation of activated carbons. Extensive literature information about sawdust, its compositions, activation methods, its efficiency for dyes removal, and environmental conditions effects has been reviewed. The applicability of various adsorption kinetic models and adsorption isotherm models for dye removal by sawdust-derived activated carbons has been also reported. Finally, this paper highlights the use of sawdust as base material for various composites and mixture which can be used as granular activated carbon.

Trimetallic composite nanofibers for antibacterial and photocatalytic dye degradation of mixed dye water

Membrane technology is an advanced approach to making a healthier and cleaner environment. Using such catalytic membrane technology to get clean, usable water by removal of dye impurities as well as pathogenic microbes is the main goal behind the research work. Here, we present the synthesis and efficacy study of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)-based Ag/ZnO/TiO₂ trimetallic bifunctional nanofibers with antibacterial and photocatalytic activity. The nanofibers have been proven to be effective for the degradation of methylene blue (MB 93.4%), rhodamine B (Rh 34.6%), auramine-O (Au 65.0%) and fuchsin basic (FB 69.8%) dyes individually within 90 min in daylight. The study is further extended in abating a mixture of these dyes from contaminated water using composite nanofibers. Also, in the case of a mixture of these dyes (3 ppm each), nanofibers show dye degradation efficiency (DDE) of 90.9% (MB), 62.4% (Au) and 90.3% (FB and Rh) in 60 min. The role of Ag nanoparticles with a synergic photocatalytic effect on ZnO and TiO₂ is also demonstrated. Also, PMMA/ZnO/TiO₂ composite fiber membrane in synergy with silver particles shows better antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria E. coli, making PMMA/Ag/ZnO/TiO₂ fibers a promising candidate in water purification.

Recent advances for dyes removal using novel adsorbents: A review

Dyeing wastewaters are toxic and carcinogenic to both aquatic life and human beings. Adsorption technology, as a facile and effective method, has been extensively used for removing dyes from aqueous solutions for decades. Numerous researchers have attempted to seek or design alternative materials for dye adsorption. However, using various novel adsorbents to remove dyes has not been extensively reviewed before. In this review, the key advancement on the preparation and modification of novel adsorbents and their adsorption capacities for dyes removal under various conditions have been highlighted and discussed. Specific adsorption mechanisms and functionalization methods, particularly for increasing adsorption capacities are discussed for each adsorbent. This review article mainly includes (1) the categorization, side effects and removal technologies of dyes; (2) the characteristics, advantages and limitations of each sort of adsorbents; (3) the functionalization and modification methods and controlling mechanisms; and (4) discussion on the problems and future perspectives about adsorption technology from adsorbents aspects and practical application aspects.

This review describes an in-depth overview and knowledge on the variety of synthetic strategies for forming metal sulfides and their potential use to achieve effective hydrogen generation and beyond.

An update on synthetic dyes adsorption onto clay based minerals: A state-of-art review

Dyes are growing to be a problematic class of pollutants to the environment. The disposal of dyes in water resources has bad aesthetic and health effects, hence the need to remove them from the environment. The need for treatment methods that are effective and low in price is rising hence a lot of research interest is being diverted towards adsorbents that are cheap, preferable naturally occurring materials like clays. In most reported dye adsorption studies, limited information on the relationship between characterization results with adsorbent performance on dye removal has been given. This review article seeks to report on the link between the adsorption characteristics of the clays and their adsorption capacities and to gather information on the modifications done on clays to improve their adsorption capacities. A critical analysis of the different mechanisms involved during the decolouration process and their application for dye removal has been discussed in detail in this up-to-date review. From a wide range of consulted literature review, it is evident that some clays have appreciable adsorption capacities on top of being widely available. It was also noted that several parameters like contact time, dosage, concentration, temperature and pH affect the removal of dyes. Furthermore, the application of clay minerals for decolourising water represents economic viable and locally available materials that can be used substantially for pollution control and management. Conclusions were also drawn and suggestions for future research perspectives are proposed.
