Photocatalytic degradation of cholesterol-lowering statin drugs by TiO2-based catalyst. Kinetics, analytical studies and toxicity evaluation

Nanocomposite material from TiO2 and activated carbon for the removal of pharmaceutical product sulfamethazine by combined adsorption/photocatalysis in aqueous media

This work was dedicated to the elaboration of new composite materials based on activated carbon and titanium oxide as an ecological solution for the cleaning of water contaminated with pharmaceutical pollutants. Such new composite materials allowed the combining of adsorption and photocatalytic process, which allows a cleaning process that is low cost making them promising materials. The functionalization of the surface of activated carbon (AC) by TiO₂ nanoparticles forms the core of the nanocomposite material. This was accomplished using sol-gel process with molar ratios R_n (n_Ti/n_AC) in the range of 1/10 to 7/10 followed by a calcination step (400 °C, N₂, 2 h). Using various characterization techniques, AC surface functionalization was confirmed and the formation of a TiO₂ coating on the AC was noticed with TiO₂ under its unique anatase crystallographic form. The study of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of the sulfamethazine antibiotic demonstrated that the most photoactive nanocomposite corresponds to the one with R_n = 0.5. Freundlich model was proved to be a perfect fit with the experimental results stating that the adsorption is of multilayer nature on the surface of the adsorbent and with interactions between the pollutants adsorbed on its surface. The photocatalytic degradation of the remaining pharmaceutical pollutant in the solution was evidenced and essentially occurred through the involvement of hydroxyl radicals formed by the excitation of the photocatalyst. The formation of the photoproducts analyzed by the LC/MS technique implies the splitting of the sulfonamide bridge, and by the hydroxylation of the aromatic ring and the pyrimidine group.

Lipid-core nanocapsules are an alternative to the pulmonary delivery and to increase the stability of statins

Aims: Lipid-core nanocapsules (LNCs) loaded with simvastatin (SV, SV-LNC) or lovastatin (LV, LV-LNC) were formulated for pulmonary administration. Methods: The LNC suspensions were characterized physicochemically, their stability was evaluated, and drug delivery by the pulmonary route was tested in vitro. Results: The loaded LNCs had a particle size close to 200 nm, a low polydispersity index, and a zeta potential around -20 mV. The encapsulation efficiency was high for SV (99.21 ± 0.7%) but low for LV (20.34 ± 1.2%). SV release from nanocapsules was slower than it was from SV in solution, with a monoexponential release profile, and the drug emitted and aerosol output rate was higher for SV-LNCs (1.58 µg/s) than for SV in suspension (0.54 µg/s). Conclusions: SV-LNCs had a median aerodynamic diameter of 3.51 µm and a highly respirable fraction (61.9%), indicating that nanoparticles are a suitable system for efficient delivery of simvastatin to the lung.

Photocatalytic degradation of rosuvastatin: analytical studies and toxicity evaluations

Photocatalytic degradation of rosuvastatin, which is a drug that has been used to reduce blood cholesterol levels, was studied in this work employing ZnO as catalyst. The experiments were carried out in a temperature-controlled batch reactor that was irradiated with UV light. Preliminary the effects of the photocatalyst loading, the initial pH and the initial rosuvastatin concentration were evaluated. The experimental results showed that rosuvastatin degradation is primarily a photocatalytic process, with pseudo-first order kinetics. The byproducts that were generated during the oxidative process were identified using nano-ultra performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (nano-UPLC-MS/MS) and acute toxicity tests using Daphnia magna were done to evaluate the toxicity of the untreated rosuvastatin solution and the reactor effluent.

TiO2-assisted photodegradation of pharmaceuticals — a review

Pharmaceutical compounds have been detected in the environment and potentially arise from the discharge of excreted and improperly disposed medication from sewage treatment facilities. In order to minimize environmental exposure of pharmaceutical residues, a potential technique to remove pharmaceuticals from water is the use of an advanced oxidation process (AOP) involving titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysis. To evaluate the extent UV/TiO2 processes have been studied for pharmaceutical degradation, a literature search using the keywords ‘titanium dioxide’, ‘photocatalysis’, ‘advanced oxidation processes’, ‘pharmaceuticals’ and ‘degradation’ were used in the ISI Web of Knowledge TM, Scopus TM and ScienceDirect TM databases up to and including articles published on 23 November 2011. The degradation rates of pharmaceuticals under UV/TiO2 treatment were dependent on type and amount of TiO2 loading, pharmaceutical concentration, the presence of electron acceptors and pH. Complete mineralization under particular experimental conditions were reported for some pharmaceuticals; however, some experiments reported evolution of toxic intermediates during the photocatalytic process. It is concluded that the UV/TiO2 system is potentially a feasible wastewater treatment process, but careful consideration of the treatment time, the loading and the type of TiO2 (doped vs. undoped) used for a particular pharmaceutical is necessary for a successful application (198 words).
