Photoinduced electron transfer from Ru am(m)ine compounds with low-lying ligand field excited states to nanocrystalline TiO2

Flipping Molecules over on TiO2 Surfaces with Light and Electric Fields

Light excitation of the sensitizer [Ru(NH₃)₅(eina)](PF₆)₂, where eina is ethyl isonicotinate, anchored to anatase TiO₂ nanocrystallites interconnected in a mesoporous thin film and immersed in CH₃CN resulted in spectroscopic changes consistent with both excited-state injection and sensitizer reorientation, termed flipping. When the light irradiation was removed, the sensitizers flipped back over. Such flipping was absent when the carboxylic acid derivative of the sensitizer was utilized or when SnO₂/TiO₂ core/shell materials were employed in place of TiO₂. The flipping was attributed to the torque on the sensitizer in the electric field generated by the injected electrons. Pulsed light excitation was utilized to time-resolve flipping and charge recombination with this and the per-deuterated complex (ND₃)₅Ru^II(eina)|TiO₂. In all cases, charge recombination was more rapid when the oxidized sensitizer was flipped over, behavior consistent with stronger electronic coupling. Kinetic isotope effects of 26.7 and 0.12 were determined for charge recombination and for flipping, respectively. Spectro-electrochemical measurements showed that thermal reduction of TiO₂ with an applied potential also initiated flipping yet required much larger field strengths. The data show that the electric fields created at illuminated semiconductor interfaces are sufficient to reorientate molecules anchored to its surface.

Spectroscopic signatures of ligand field states in {Ru(II)(imine)} complexes

Ligand field (LF) states have been present in discussions on the photophysics and photochemistry of ruthenium-iminic chromophores for decades, although there is very little documented direct evidence of them. We studied the picosecond transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy of four {Ru(II)(imine)} complexes that respond to the formula trans-[Ru(L)4(X)2], where L is either pyridine (py) or 4-methoxypyridine (MeOpy) and X is either cyanide or thiocyanate. Dicyano compounds behave as most ruthenium polypyridines and their LF states remain silent. In contrast, in the dithiocyanate complexes we found clear spectroscopic evidence of the participation of LF states in the MLCT decay pathway. These states are of donor and acceptor character simultaneously and this is manifested in the presence of MLCT and LMCT transient absorption bands of similar energy. Spectroelectrochemical techniques supported the interpretation of the absorption features of MLCT states, and DFT methods helped to assign their spectroscopic signatures and provided strong evidence on the nature of LF states.

Optimizing Photovoltaic Response by Tuning Light-Harvesting Nanocrystal Shape Synthesized Using a Quick Liquid-Gas Phase Reaction

The electron recombination lifetime in a sensitized semiconductor assembly is greatly influenced by the crystal structure and geometric form of the light-harvesting semiconductor nanocrystal. When such light harvesters with varying structural characteristics are configured in a photoanode, its interface with the electrolyte becomes equally important and directly influences the photovoltaic efficiency. We have systematically probed here the influence of nanocrystal crystallographic structure and shape on the electron recombination lifetime and its eventual influence on the light to electricity conversion efficiency of a liquid junction semiconductor sensitized solar cell. The light-harvesting cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanocrystals of distinctly different and controlled shapes are obtained using a novel and simple liquid-gas phase synthesis method performed at different temperatures involving very short reaction times. High-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic studies respectively exhibit different crystallographic phase content and optical properties. When assembled on a mesoscopic TiO2 film by a linker molecule, they exhibit remarkable variation in electron recombination lifetime by 1 order of magnitude, as determined by ac-impedance spectroscopy. This also drastically affects the photovoltaic efficiency of the differently shaped nanocrystal sensitized solar cells.
