Synthesis and photophysical properties of poly(arylene ethynylene) small-molecules and polymers derivatized with leucine substituents

A DFT Study on the Excited Electronic States of Cyanopolyynes: Benchmarks and Applications

Highly unsaturated chain molecules are interesting due to their potential application as nanowires and occurrence in interstellar space. Here, we focus on predicting the electronic spectra of polyynic nitriles HC2m+1N (m = 0–13) and dinitriles NC2n+2N (n = 0–14). The results of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations are compared with the available gas-phase and noble gas matrix experimental data. We assessed the performance of fifteen functionals and five basis sets for reproducing (i) vibrationless electronic excitation energies and (ii) vibrational frequencies in the singlet excited states. We found that the basis sets of at least triple-ζ quality were necessary to describe the long molecules with alternate single and triple bonds. Vibrational frequency scaling factors are similar for the ground and excited states. The benchmarked spectroscopic parameters were shown to be acceptably reproduced with adequately chosen functionals, in particular ωB97X, CAM-B3LYP, B3LYP, B971, and B972. Select functionals were applied to study the electronic excitation of molecules up to HC27N and C30N2. It is demonstrated that optical excitation leads to a shift from the polyyne- to a cumulene-like electronic structure.

Optical Characterization of Cesium Lead Bromide Perovskites

CsPbBr3 and Cs4PbBr6 perovskite powders have been synthesized through a relatively simple low-temperature and low-cost method. Nanocrystalline films have also been deposited from solutions with four different molar compositions of binary salt precursors. Optical absorption, emission and excitation spectra have been performed in the UV-visible spectral range while X-ray diffraction (XRD) has been recorded to characterize the nanocrystal morphology for the different molar compositions. A preferential orientation of crystallites along the (024) crystalline plane has been observed as a function of the different deposition conditions in films growth. All the crystals show an absorption edge around 530 nm; Tauc plots of the absorption returned bandgaps ranging from 2.29 to 2.35 eV characteristic of CsPbBr3 phase. We attribute the UV absorption band peaked at 324 nm to the fundamental band-to-band transition for Cs4PbBr6. It was observed that the samples with the most ordered Cs4PbBr6 crystals exhibited the most intense emission of light, with a bright green emission at 520 nm, which are however due to the luminescence of the inclusion of CsPbBr3 nanoclusters into the Cs4PbBr6. The latter shows instead an intense UV emission. Differently, the pure CsPbBr3 powder did not show any intense fluorescent emission. The excitation spectra of the green fluorescent emission in all samples closely resemble the CsPbBr3 absorption with the peculiar dip around 324 nm as expected from density of state calculations reported in the literature.

X-ray Generated Recombination Exciplexes of Substituted Diphenylacetylenes with Tertiary Amines: A Versatile Experimental Vehicle for Targeted Creation of Deep-Blue Electroluminescent Systems

Customizable and technology-friendly functional materials are one of the mainstays of emerging organic electronics and optoelectronics. We show that recombination exciplexes of simple substituted diphenylacetylenes with tertiary amines can be a convenient source of tunable deep-blue emission with possible applications in organic electroluminescent systems. The optically inaccessible exciplexes were produced via recombination of radiation-generated radical ion pairs in alkane solution, which mimics charge transport and recombination in the active layer of practical organic light-emitting diodes in a simple solution-based experiment. Despite varying and rather poor intrinsic emission properties, diphenylacetylene and its prototypical methoxy (donor) or trifluoromethyl (acceptor) monosubstituted derivatives readily form recombination exciplexes with N,N-dimethylaniline and other tertiary amines that produce emission with maxima ranging from 385 to 435 nm. The position of emission band maximum linearly correlates with readily calculated gas-phase electron affinity of the corresponding diphenylacetylene, which can be used for fast computational prescreening of the candidate molecules, and various substituted diphenylacetylenes can be synthesized via relatively simple and universal cross-coupling reactions of Sonogashira and Castro. Together, the simple solution-based experiment, computationally cheap prescreening method, and universal synthetic strategy may open a very broad and chemically convenient class of compounds to obtain OLEDs and OLED-based multifunctional devices with tunable emission spectrum and high conversion efficiency that has yet not been seriously considered for these purposes.
