Abstract
Semiconductor materials have become a competitive candidate for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate. However, powdered semiconductors are difficult to execute a fast in situ detection for trace analytes. Here, we developed a new flexible semiconductor SERS substrate by in situ densely growing anatase TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of cotton fabric through a filtration-hydrothermal method, in which TiO2 exhibits excellent controllability in size and distribution by regulating the ratio of water to alcohol in synthesis and the number of filtration-hydrothermal repetitive cycle. Cotton fabric/TiO2 (Cot/TiO2) substrate exhibits a high SERS activity and excellent spectral repeatability. The developed substrate has an ultra-high stability that can withstand long-term preservation; it can even resist the corrosions of strong acid and alkali, as well as high temperature up to 100 °C and low temperature down to - 20 °C. The flexible substrate can be used to carry out a rapid in situ detection for quinolone antibiotic (enrofloxacin and enoxacin) residues on the fish body surface by using a simple swabbing method, with high quantitative detection potential (up to an order of magnitude of 10-7 M), and even for the simultaneous detection of both drug residues. The flexible substrate also exhibits an excellent recyclability up to 6 recycles in the actual SERS detection.

Abstract
Developing an eco-friendly, sustainable and antibacterial adsorbent is significant for actual water treatment. Herein, a new bio-based antibacterial adsorbent based on titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles functionalized chitosan (CS) was prepared through an in-situ hydrolysis strategy using titanium oxysulfate as the source of TiO2. The as-obtained CS/TiO2 nanocomposite was characterized by a variety of analytical techniques. According to the Langmuir mode, the adsorption capacity of CS/TiO2 reached 23.64 mg P g-1, almost 8 times higher than that of CS. In addition, the normalized adsorption capacity (adsorption value per Ti) of CS/TiO2 was calculated to be 102.68 mg P g-1 Ti-1, much higher than pure TiO2 (60.11 mg P g-1 Ti-1). Moreover, CS/TiO2 exhibited a highly selective capacity for phosphate removal in the presence of competing anions, and showed high stability in a wide pH range of 3.0-9.0. When the phosphate concentration was 2.0 mg P L-1, the removal efficiency of phosphate reached 99.5 % and the residual concentration was only 10 μg P L-1, which meets the USEPA standards for eutrophication prevention and control. In addition, after treatment by CS/TiO2, the phosphate concentration of two sewage water samples decreased from 1.50 and 1.0 mg P L-1 to <0.010 mg P L-1, meeting the standard of level II water based on the Environmental Quality Standard of China (GB3838-2002). Ligand exchange and electrostatic interactions are mainly responsible for phosphate adsorption by CS/TiO2. Furthermore, the CS/TiO2 nanocomposites exhibited excellent antibacterial activity, which could avoid biofouling contamination caused by microorganisms. Benefiting from the above advantages, the as-designed CS/TiO2 nanocomposite has great potential as a bio-based antibacterial adsorbent for phosphate removal or capture from wastewater.

Abstract
Herein, we reported the synthesis of TiO2 through different non-hydrolytic sol-gel (NHSG) routes in viscous polymer media. For the first time, the influence of the polymer nature (Polystyrene (PS) or Polypropylene (PP)) on the morphology of synthesized inorganic domains was investigated. The non-hydrolytic sol-gel reactions between titanium isopropoxide Ti(OiPr)4 and acetic anhydride in molten polypropylene lead to the formation of microfillers with a mean diameter of about 1 μm, while the same synthesis carried out in viscous polystyrene lead to the formation of nanofillers with diameter lower than 10 nm forming aggregates of approximately 200 nm. We have also investigated the influence of the oxygen donor nature on the morphology of synthesized fillers using aromatic oxygen donors in a polystyrene matrix. The use of benzoic anhydride or acetophenone as oxygen donors with Ti(OiPr)4 in viscous polystyrene lead to respectively platelet-like morphology or aggregated nanofillers. We demonstrated that the affinity between polymer, reactants, and/or by-products had an influence on the morphology and the size of in situ synthesized TiO2 fillers. These results evidenced for the first time the possibility to control and to tune the morphology of in situ grown inorganic objects through the NHSG process by the appropriate choice of solvent, here a viscous polymer medium, and reactants.

Abstract
Arsenic (As) contamination poses an urgent environmental risk, and its removal from groundwater remains a challenge due to the lack of efficient adsorbents. Herein, a novel granular chitosan-titanium (CS-Ti) adsorbent was fabricated by the sol-gel method. Batch experiments show that As(V) adsorption on CS-Ti followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption isotherm conformed to the Freundlich model with the correlation coefficient of 0.99. In situ FTIR spectra revealed that the CS-Ti adsorbent was composed of amorphous TiOx and chitosan by forming C-O-Ti and N-Ti bonds, and the amorphous TiOx was responsible for As(V) adsorption. Rapid small-scale column tests show that 165.6 μg/L of As in groundwater were effectively removed in approximately 126-bed volumes, and the spent adsorbents were regenerated with 0.01 mol/L NaOH and maintained the adsorption efficiency after four cycles. This study provides a simple and practical route to fabricate adsorbents for water treatment.

Abstract
Molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) is a layered material with interesting photocatalytic properties. In this study, a layered MoS2 was produced using a hydrothermal method. The obtained material was characterised by XRD (X-ray diffraction), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), UV-Vis spectroscopy, DLS (dynamic light scattering), and zeta potential analysis. For the evaluation of the photocatalytic properties of layered MoS2, a solution of bromophenol blue (BPB) and the catalyst was illuminated for 120 minutes. According to the experimental results, MoS2 exhibited excellent catalytic activity in BPB degradation. The MoS2 preparation method enabled improved light harvesting, avoided fast charge recombination (related to bulk MoS2), and created a large number of suitable electron transfer sites for photocatalytic reactions. Simulation of BPB decay and bromide production was carried out for a further understanding of MoS2 photocatalytic action. The simulation results proved the reduction mechanism of BPB photodegradation. Molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) is a layered material with interesting photocatalytic properties.![]()

Abstract
The present study reports the design of heterogeneous photocatalytic system using Fe2O3 with chitosan (CS) as a matrix for the sonophotocatalytic degradation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP). CS was chosen as a polymer matrix as it is abundant in nature, eco-friendly, and can be easily processed into microparticles, nanofibers, as well as nanoparticles and shows the tendency of adhesion towards a vast range of solid substrates besides serving as a chelating agent toward metallic oxides. The nanohybrids were characterized via Fourier transformation infrared spectrum (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy coupled with electron dispersive spectrum (SEM-EDS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and UV-visible diffuse reflectance (UV-Vis-DRS) analyses. Infrared spectroscopy (IR) studies confirmed synergistic interaction between Fe2O3 and CS. The XRD measurements confirmed the crystalline morphology while SEM revealed formation of rod-like structures. The TGA studies confirmed higher thermal stability of CS/Fe2O3 as compared to pure CS. The optical band gap for CS and CS/Fe2O3 was calculated to be 3 eV and 2.25 eV, respectively, from diffuse reflectance spectral (DRS) studies. Rapid photocatalytic degradation of 2,4,6-TCP was observed under UV light irradiation in presence of CS and CS/Fe2O3 nanohybrids which revealed 83.19% and 95.20% degradation within a short span of 60 min. The degraded fragments were identified using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The present study on the development of ecofriendly nanohybrid photocatalyst is expected to provide experimental basis for the future development of CS-based photocatalysts which can be easily processed into membranes/filters for the industrial scale degradation of toxic organic pollutants.

Abstract
Concerns of petroleum dependence and environmental pollution prompt an urgent need for new sustainable approaches in developing polymeric products. Biobased polymers provide a potential solution, and biobased nanocomposites further enhance the performance and functionality of biobased polymers. Here we summarize the unique challenges and review recent progress in this field with an emphasis on self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles. The conventional wisdom is to fully disperse nanoparticles in the polymer matrix to optimize the performance. However, self-assembly of the nanoparticles into clusters, networks, and layered structures provides an opportunity to address performance challenges and create new functionality in biobased polymers. We introduce basic assembly principles through both blending and in situ synthesis, and identify key technologies that benefit from the nanoparticle assembly in the polymer matrix. The fundamental forces and biobased polymer conformations are discussed in detail to correlate the nanoscale interactions and morphology with the macroscale properties. Different types of nanoparticles, their assembly structures and corresponding applications are surveyed. Through this review we hope to inspire the community to consider utilizing self-assembly to elevate functionality and performance of biobased materials. Development in this area sets the foundation for a new era of designing sustainable polymers in many applications including packaging, construction chemicals, adhesives, foams, coatings, personal care products, and advanced manufacturing.

Abstract
The nano-oxide materials with special structures prepared by template methods have a good dispersion, regular structures and high specific surface areas. Therefore, in some areas, improved properties are observed than conventional bulk oxide materials. For example, in the treatment of dye wastewater, the treatment efficiency of adsorbents and catalytic materials prepared by template method was about 30 % or even higher than that of conventional samples. This review mainly focuses on the progress of inorganic, organic and biological templates in the preparation of micro- and nano- oxide materials with special morphologies, and the roles of the prepared materials as adsorbents and photocatalysts in dye wastewater treatment. The characteristics and advantages of inorganic, organic and biological template are also summarized. In addition, the applications of template method prepared oxides in the field of sensors, drug carrier, energy materials and other fields are briefly discussed with detailed examples.

Abstract
This article provides an overview of current research into the development, synthesis, photocatalytic bacterial activity, biocompatibility and cytotoxic properties of various visible-light active titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) and their nanocomposites. To achieve antibacterial inactivation under visible light, TiO2 NPs are doped with metal and non-metal elements, modified with carbonaceous nanomaterials, and coupled with other metal oxide semiconductors. Transition metals introduce a localized d-electron state just below the conduction band of TiO2 NPs, thereby narrowing the bandgap and causing a red shift of the optical absorption edge into the visible region. Silver nanoparticles of doped TiO2 NPs experience surface plasmon resonance under visible light excitation, leading to the injection of hot electrons into the conduction band of TiO2 NPs to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) for bacterial killing. The modification of TiO2 NPs with carbon nanotubes and graphene sheets also achieve the efficient creation of ROS under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, titanium-based alloy implants in orthopedics with enhanced antibacterial activity and biocompatibility can be achieved by forming a surface layer of Ag-doped titania nanotubes. By incorporating TiO2 NPs and Cu-doped TiO2 NPs into chitosan or the textile matrix, the resulting polymer nanocomposites exhibit excellent antimicrobial properties that can have applications as fruit/food wrapping films, self-cleaning fabrics, medical scaffolds and wound dressings. Considering the possible use of visible-light active TiO2 nanomaterials for various applications, their toxicity impact on the environment and public health is also addressed.

Abstract
The direct catalytic conversion of bioethanol to butadiene, also known as the Lebedev process, is one of the most promising solution to replace the petro-based production of this important bulk chemical. Considering the intricate reaction mechanism—where a combination of acid-catalyzed dehydration reactions and metal-catalyzed dehydrogenation have to take place simultaneously—tailor-made bifunctional catalysts are required. We propose to use non-hydrolytic sol-gel (NHSG) chemistry to prepare mesoporous Ta-SiO2 materials which are further promoted by Ag via impregnation. An acetamide elimination route is presented, starting from silicon tetraacetate and pentakis(dimethylamido)tantalum(V), in the presence of a Pluronic surfactant. The catalysts display advantageous texture, with specific surface area in the 600–1000 m² g−1 range, large pore volume (0.6–1.0 mL g−1), an average pore diameter of 4 nm and only a small contribution from micropores. Using an array of characterization techniques, we show that NHSG allows achieving a high degree of dispersion of tantalum, mainly incorporated as single sites in the silica matrix. The presence of these monomeric TaOx active sites is responsible for the much higher dehydration ability, as compared to the corresponding catalyst prepared by impregnation of Ta onto a pristine silica support. We attempt to optimize the butadiene yield by changing the relative proportion of Ta and Ag and by tuning the space velocity. We also demonstrate that Ag or Cu can be introduced directly in one step, during the NHSG process. Copper doping is shown to be much more efficient than silver doping to guide the reaction towards the production of butadiene.
