Abstract
Selective and sensitive moisture sensors have attracted immense attention due to their ability to monitor the humidity content in industrial solvents, food products, etc., for regulating industrial safety management. Herein, a hydroxy naphthaldehyde-based piezochromic luminogen, namely, 1-{[(2-hydroxyphenyl)imino]methyl}naphthalen-2-ol (NAP-1), has been synthesized and its photophysical and molecular sensing properties have been investigated by means of various spectroscopic tools. Owing to the synergistic effect of both aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) along with the restriction of C=N isomerization, the probe shows bright yellowish-green-colored keto emission with high quantum yield after the interaction with a trace amount of water. This makes NAP-1 a potential sensor for monitoring water content in the industrial solvents with very low detection limits of 0.033, 0.032, 0.034, and 0.033% (v/v) from tetrahydrofuran (THF), acetone, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and methanol, respectively. The probe could be used in the food industry to detect trace moisture in the raw food samples. The reversible switching behavior of NAP-1 makes it suitable for designing an INHIBIT logic gate with an additional application in inkless writing. In addition, an Internet of Things-(IoT) based prototype device has been proposed for on-site monitoring of the moisture content by a smartphone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The aggregated probe also has the ability to recognize Cu2+ from a purely aqueous medium via the chelation-enhanced quenching (CHEQ) mechanism, leading to ∼84% fluorescence quenching with a Stern-Volmer quenching constant of 1.46 × 104 M-1 and with an appreciably low detection threshold of 57.2 ppb, far below than recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA). The spectroscopic and theoretical calculations (density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT), and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis) further empower the understanding of the mechanistic course of the interaction of the host-guest recognition event.

Abstract
This study investigates the fluorescence quenching mechanism of formaldehyde detection probe Naph1 and its contrast probe Naph3 in water samples and discussed the effect of the electron-donating group and electron-withdrawing group on fluorescence characteristics based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). We optimized the structures of the four probes Naph1, Naph1-S, Naph3, and Naph3-S (Scheme 1) and calculated the absorption and emission spectra, which were in good agreement with the experiment. Frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) were used to analyze the charge arrangement in the excited state. To investigate the intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) phenomenon, a potential energy curve was constructed. The amount of fragment charge transfer was analyzed by the IFCT method, and then it was determined whether there was an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process. It was found that there was an ICT process in Naph3. The electronic effect of the functional groups did not determine the ICT characteristics and the fluorescence characteristics of the substance. Furthermore, the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) constant based on the intersystem crossing (ISC) was supplemented, which showed that the fluorescence quenching of Naph1 and Naph3 was caused by the ISC and the corresponding quenching of Naph3-S was caused by charge transfer (CT) in the excited state.

Abstract
A series of benzothiazole-based compounds were synthesized and characterized. Among them, probe Z showed significant dual-functional performance which was capable of sensing pH change and Cu2+. Probe Z displayed fluorescent turn-on under alkaline conditions due to deprotonation of the hydroxyl group along with the obviously color change from colorless to mint green. Interestingly, it further achieved in ratiometric detection of Cu2+ through absorbance or fluorescence signals in strong alkaline condition. The limit of detection was calculated correspondingly as 0.37 μM and 1.35 μM, respectively. Especially, the combination of the XNOR and INHIBIT logic gates could be used to confirm that one medium was in neutrality or alkalinity condition. Moreover, Z was successfully used in real water samples and test paper for fast identification of Cu2+, respectively.

Abstract
Aluminum is known as the most ubiquitous metal in earth's crust but its excessive exposure will cause damage to environment and health of the organism. Here, a turn-on Schiff base fluorescence probe STH based on excited state intramolecular proton transfer and photoelectron transfer processes for Al3+ detection with fast response rate (within minutes), low detection limit (4.26×10-8M), high selectivity and reasonable pH application range (5.0-8.0) was developed. Fluorescence titration experiments show that probe STH has an excellent linear relationship (R2=0.9694) with Al3+ concentration and could be applied to quantitatively recognize Al3+ in real-water samples. Based on Job's plot and in situ mass spectra, two STH molecules will complex with Al3+ to form 2:1 complexation with oxygen atoms of hydroxyl and carbonyl groups and nitrogen atom of CN bond participating in coordination.

Abstract
A simple asymmetric hydrazone 1 based on salicylaldehyde was designed and prepared, and exhibited an evident aggregation-induced emission (AIE) at a long wavelength of 570 nm in aqueous medium. Probe 1 can selectively sense Al3+ in CH3OH solution through the chelation-enhanced fluorescence mechanism and also recognize Cu2+ via fluorescence quenching in H2O solution through the Cu2+-induced assembly of aggregates. In addition, the probe can be applied for detecting Cu2+ in biological samples.

Abstract
A novel multifunctional chemosensor HL bearing a julolidine unit and a Schiff base unit has been synthesized. As a fluorescent sensor, HL exhibited excellent selectivity and high sensitivity to Al3+ and F−/CN− with a low detection limit in acetonitrile. Moreover, HL also showed good colorimetric selectivity to F−/CN−; a solution color change from colorless to light yellow in acetonitrile was observed by the ‘naked-eye’. The properties of HL with Al3+ and F−/CN− were studied by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry and 1H NMR titration. Furthermore, the cell imaging experimental results indicated that the chemosensor HL could be applied for the detection of Al3+ in living cells. A novel multifunctional chemosensor HL bearing a julolidine unit and a Schiff base unit has been synthesized.![]()
