Magnetic biochar serves as adsorbents and catalyst supports for the removal of antibiotics from wastewater: A review

Numerous antibiotics are being released into the natural environment through wastewater. As antibiotic usage increases annually, its detrimental impact on the environment is escalating. Addressing environmental sustainability and human health requires significant attention towards antibiotic removal. In recent years, magnetic biochar (MBC) has gained widespread application in water treatment due to its exceptional adsorption and catalytic degradation capabilities. Antibiotics such as sulfamethoxazole (SMX), tetracycline (TC), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and others commonly exhibit an adsorption capacity by MBC ranging from 5 mg/g to 900 mg/g. Moreover, MBC typically removes over 90% of these antibiotics within 60 min. The effectiveness of antibiotic removal is significantly influenced by various preparation and modification methods. Furthermore, the incorporation of magnetism enables the material to be recycled and reused multiple times, thereby reducing consumption costs. This article discusses recent studies on antibiotic removal using MBC. It has been observed that variations in the selection of raw material and preparation procedures significantly affect antibiotic removal, while the mechanisms involved in antibiotic removal remain ambiguous. Additionally, it has been noted that the removal process may lead to secondary pollution and high preparation costs. Therefore, this review comprehensively outlines the utilization of MBC in the removal of antibiotics from wastewater, including aspects such as modification, preparation, removal mechanism, and factors influencing removal, and providing recommendations for antibiotic development. The aim is to offer researchers a clear understanding to advance the field of MBC materials.

Nickel-iron-driven heterogenous bio-electro-fenton process for the degradation of methylparaben

Discharge of emerging contaminants such as parabens in natural water bodies is a grievous concern. Among parabens, methylparaben (MP) is most prevalent due to its extensive usage in personal care and food products and has been purported to trigger hormonal-related diseases. In this regard, the bio-electro-Fenton (BEF) process garners attention for remediating refractory compounds because of its ability to generate in situ hydroxyl radicals (•OH) utilising the energy harvested from electroactive microorganisms. In the present investigation, a Ni-Fe-driven heterogenous BEF system (BEF-MFC) was used to degrade MP from different matrices. At neutral catholyte pH, 99.54 ± 0.22% of MP was removed from an initial concentration of 10 mg/L in 240 min of retention time with an estimated treatment cost of about 1.01 $/m3. The removal rate ameliorated when the catholyte pH was dropped to 3.0 and by imposing an external voltage of 0.5 V, requiring just 120 min to achieve comparable MP removal efficiencies. However, catalyst leaching was higher at acidic pH (leaching of Fe ions = 0.44 mg/L and Ni ions = 0.06 mg/L) and applying external voltage increased the treatment cost slightly to 1.08 $/m3. Further, treatment of 10 mg/L MP-spiked real wastewater at pH of 7.0 with the BEF-MFC attained 85.70 ± 3.30% and 56.50 ± 1.70% reduction in MP and total organic carbon, respectively, in 240 min. In addition, a maximum power density of 205.90 ± 2.27 mW/cm2 was harvested in the BEF-MFC; thus, portraying the dual benefit of Ni-Fe heterogeneous catalyst. Even though, Ni-Fe performed reasonably well as Fenton-cum-cathode catalyst, future endeavours should be poised to fine-tune catalysts to accelerate H2O2 and •OH generation, which will reinforce the scalability of this system.

Solar-induced efficient propylparaben photodegradation by nitrogen vacancy engineered reticulate g-C3N4: Morphology, activity and mechanism

Propylparaben (PrP) has attracted extensive concerns due to its wide occurrence in wastewater and potential health risk. Herein, nitrogen vacancy engineered reticulate g-C₃N₄ (Nv-RCN) was successfully synthesized for the photodegradation of PrP. Nv-RCN exhibited larger specific surface area, greater light absorption ability, higher transfer and separation efficiency of charge carriers in comparison with bulk g-C₃N₄ (CN). According to the characterization results and DFT calculation, nitrogen vacancy could capture electrons and facilitate oxygen adsorption. The Nv-RCN exhibited an outstanding PrP removal efficiency of 94.3 %, and the corresponding apparent rate constant of Nv-RCN was 3.37 times higher than that of CN. High O₂ concentration (8 mg/L) and low pH value (pH = 3) promoted PrP photodegradation based on Box-Behnken Design. The O₂^- was the major radical during PCOP of Nv-RCN, and could oxidize PrP by decarbonylation and dealkylation. This study provided new insights to the improvement of photodegradation performance of g-C₃N₄ for parabens removal and related environmental remediation.

Functionalized magnetic nanostructured composites and hybrids for photocatalytic elimination of pharmaceuticals and personal care products

Due to rapid urbanization and globalization, an enormous use of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) has resulted their excessive release in water bodies leading to several environmental issues. This release into the environment takes place via household sewage, hospital effluents, manufacturing units and landfill sites etc. The pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are recently listed as emerging contaminants having many adverse effects towards aquatic life, human beings, and the whole ecosystem. The alarming threats of PPCPs demand efficient methods to cope up their hazardous impacts. The conventional wastewater remediations are not specifically designed for the removal of PPCPs and hence, they require advanced technologies and materials for their elimination to ensure water safety. Among various methods employed so far, photocatalysis is considered to be one of the most cost effective and eco-friendly method but it requires a suitable candidate as a photocatalyst. Thanks to the magnetic nanocomposites which have improved the limitations (poor stability, agglomeration, and difficult separation, etc.) of classically used nanomaterials. Magnetic nanocomposites contain at least one component having magnetic properties making their separation easy from the aqueous media after the photodegradation phenomenon. These can be further functionalized with other materials to obtain maximum advantage as photocatalyst. Few examples of such functionalized nanocomposites are inorganic material based magnetic nanocomposites, carbon based magnetic nanocomposites, biomaterial based magnetic nanocomposites, metal-organic framework based magnetic nanocomposites and polymer based magnetic nanocomposites etc. This review covers the global environmental issue of water pollution especially with respect to the PPCPs, their occurrence in aqueous environment and toxic effects on living beings. A comprehensive discussion of the recently reported functionalized magnetic nanocomposites for the photocatalytic removal of PPCPs from water is the main aim of this review. The synthetic/morphological approaches of various functionalized magnetic composites and their mechanism of action are also elaborated. The possible research challenges in the field of magnetic nanocomposites and future research directions are discussed to apply magnetic nanocomposites for wastewater treatment in near future.

Nanostructured photocatalysts for the abatement of contaminants by photocatalysis and photocatalytic ozonation: An overview

The water scarcity, the presence of different contaminants in the worldwide waters and wastewaters and their impacts should motivate their good elimination and water management. With this, photocatalysis and photocatalytic ozonation are strong solutions to obtain good quality reclaimed water, for different applications. Nanostructured supported photo-active catalysts, such as the TiO₂, WO₃ or ZnO can positively affect the performance of such technologies. Therefore, different semiconductors materials have been aroused the interest of the scientific community, mainly due to its functional properties as well as characteristics imposed by the different nanostructures. With this, this work overviews different works and perspective on the TiO₂ nanotubes and other semiconductors nanostructures, with the analysis of different works from 2001 to 2022. Aspects as the substrate effect, electrolyte nature, aspect ratio, electrolyte aging, and annealing treatment but also the effect of morphology, anodization time, applied voltage, temperature and viscosity are discussed. Modification of TiO₂ nanotubes is also presented in this paper. The main objective of this work is to present and discuss the key parameters and their effects on the anodization of different semiconductors, as well as the results obtained until today on the degradation of different contaminants by photocatalysis and photocatalytic ozonation, as well as their use on the treatment of real wastewater. TiO₂ nanotubes present unique properties and highly ordered configuration, which motivate their use on photo-driven technologies for the pollutant's abatement, even when compared to other nanostructures. However, photocatalysts with activity on the visible range and solar radiation, such as the WO₃, can present higher performance and can decrease operational costs, and must be an important source and a key to find efficient and cost-friendly solutions.

Photodegradation of Fipronil by Zn-AlPO4 Materials Synthesized by Non-Hydrolytic Sol–Gel Method

In recent decades, the increasing use of pesticides to improve food productivity has led to the release of effluents that contaminate the environment. To prepare a material that may help to treat effluents generated during agricultural practice, we used a new method based on the non-hydrolytic sol-gel route to obtain zinc photocatalysts in aluminophosphate matrixes. IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, differential scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersion spectroscopy, and specific surface area and pore volume determined from the nitrogen adsorbed were used to characterize materials treated at different temperatures. X-ray analysis showed how heat-treatment affected the structure of the material: Zn-AlPO4 in the trigonal and orthorhombic phase was obtained at 750 and 1000 °C, respectively. These phases directly influenced the ability of the material to generate OH radicals. The capacity of the materials to treat effluents was tested in the photodegradation of the pesticide Fipronil. The photocatalytic reactions were monitored by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses. Zn-AlPO4 treated at 750 °C showed better photodegradation results--it removed 80% of the pesticide in 2 h when higher mass (150 mg) was tested. Long-time treatment of the effluent with Zn-AlPO4 treated at 750 °C completely photodegraded Fipronil. GC-MS analysis confirmed the photodegration profile, and only traces of Fipronil were observed after photocatalytic reaction for 120 min in the presence of Zn-AlPO4 treated at 750 °C under UV radiation.

Carbon-based catalyst for environmental bioremediation and sustainability: Updates and perspectives on techno-economics and life cycle assessment

Global rise in the generation of waste has caused an enormous environmental concern and waste management problem. The untreated carbon rich waste serves as a breeding ground for pathogens and thus strategies for production of carbon rich biochar from waste by employing different thermochemical routes namely hydrothermal carbonization, hydrothermal liquefaction and pyrolysis has been of interest by researchers globally. Biochar has been globally produced due to its diverse applications from environmental bioremediation to energy storage. Also, several factors affect the production of biochar including feedstock/biomass type, moisture content, heating rate, and temperature. Recently the application of biochar has increased tremendously owing to the cost effectiveness and eco-friendly nature. Thus this communication summarized and highlights the preferred feedstock for optimized biochar yield along with the factor influencing the production. This review provides a close view on biochar activation approaches and synthesis techniques. The application of biochar in environmental remediation, composting, as a catalyst, and in energy storage has been reviewed. These informative findings were supported with an overview of lifecycle and techno-economical assessments in the production of these carbon based catalysts. Integrated closed loop approaches towards biochar generation with lesser/zero landfill waste for safeguarding the environment has also been discussed. Lastly the research gaps were identified and the future perspectives have been elucidated.

Biochar in environmental friendly fertilizers - Prospects of development products and technologies

According to the circular economy concept, the production of fertilizers should be closed in a loop, which prevents excessive emissions and harmful effects to the environment. Biological wastes are problematic to collect and transport. They undergo a biological transformation that causes greenhouse gases emission and sanitary hazards. Biomass sources used for organic or organo-mineral fertilizers must be free of pathogens and rich in macro and microelements. Solid residues can be processed thermally. Biochar is a carbon produced by biomass pyrolysis without oxygen presence and has been used for many years to improve soil quality and enhance the efficiency of fertilization. There are many research works on the use of biochar in fertilization. This study is also extended by the latest developments and technologies from the patent database (recent year) and biochar-based fertilizers market. To the best of our knowledge, there is no such review currently available in scientific databases. Based on the collected data, the best method of biochar management was proposed - soil application. Biochar applied to soil has several advantages: it improves soil structure and its sorption capacity, enhances soil-nutrient retention and water-holding capacity, immobilizes contaminants from soil (sorption), reduces greenhouse gas emissions and soil nutrient leaching losses while stimulating the growth of a plant.

A comprehensive review on recent advances toward sequestration of levofloxacin antibiotic from wastewater

Among various classes of antibiotics, fluoroquinolones, especially Levofloxacin, are being administered on a large scale for numerous purposes. Being highly stable to be completely metabolized, residual quantities of Levofloxacin get accumulated into the food chain proving a great global threat for aquatic as well as terrestrial ecosystems. Various removal techniques including both conventional and advanced methods have been reported for this purpose. This review is a novel attempt to make a critical analysis of the recent advances made exclusively toward the sequestration of Levofloxacin from wastewater through an extensive literature survey (2015-2021). Adsorption and advanced oxidation processes especially photocatalytic degradation are the most tested techniques in which assorted nanomaterials play a significant role. Several photocatalysts exhibited up to 100% degradation of LEV which makes photocatalytic degradation the best method among other tested methods. However, the degraded products need to be further monitored in terms of their toxicity. Biological degradation may prove to be the most environment-friendly with the least toxicity, unfortunately, not much research is reported in the field. With these key findings and knowledge gaps, authors suggest the scope of hybrid techniques, which have been experimented on other antibiotics. These can potentially minimize the disadvantages of the individual techniques concurrently improving the efficiency of LEV removal. Besides, techniques like column adsorption, membrane treatment, and ozonation, being least reported, reserve good perspectives for future research. With these implications, the review will certainly serve as a breakthrough for researchers working in this field to aid their future findings.

MOF-derived biochar composites for enhanced high performance photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Biochar reinforced advanced nanocomposites are of interest to a wide circle of researchers. Herein, we describe a novel MOF-derived reinforced cow dung biochar composite, which was prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method to form the MOF MIL-125(Ti) onto a nitrogen and sulfur co-doped bio-carbon (NSCDBC). The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrum of NSCDBC/MIL-125(Ti) exhibits an extension of light absorption in the visible region (360–800 nm), indicating its higher visible light capture capacity relative to pure MIL-125(Ti). The photocatalytic activity results show that all the NSCDBC/MIL-125(Ti) composite samples, namely NSCM-5, NSCM-10, NSCM-20 and NSCM-30 display good performance in the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride compared to pure MIL-125(Ti). Among them, NSCM-20 exhibits the highest catalytic activity with a removal rate of 94.62%, which is attributed to the excellent adsorption ability of NSCDBC and the ability to inhibit the complexation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Photoluminescence verifies that the loading of biochar successfully enhances the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Subsequently, the active species in the photocatalytic process are identified by using electron spin resonance spin-trap techniques and free radical trapping experiments. Finally, the possible reaction mechanism for the photocatalytic process is revealed. These results confirm that NSCDBC/MIL-125(Ti) is a potentially low-cost, green photocatalyst for water quality improvement.

In-situ synthesis of biochar modified PbMoO4: An efficient visible light-driven photocatalyst for tetracycline removal

For highly efficient photocatalytic remediation of organic pollutants, broad-spectrum light response and effective charge separation are two key goals. To achieve these goals, a novel biochar (BC) modified PbMoO₄ composite catalyst was successfully synthesized in situ by combining coprecipitation with pyrolysis treatment of poplar sawdust and the technical feasibility of degradation of tetracycline (TC) with compound photocatalyst prepared from recovered agricultural and forestry residues was preliminarily demonstrated. The characterization demonstrated that the presence of BC narrowed the bandgap, enhanced visible light absorption as well as facilitated charge separation. Three composites (with the mass ratio of PbMoO₄ to BC = 1:4; 1:1; and 4:1, respectively) displayed higher activity than pure PbMoO₄. The results showed that the composite with the PbMoO₄ to BC ratio of 1:4 exhibited the best photocatalytic activity, for 150 mg L^-1 TC the removal rate was 61.0%, and the rate constant was 8.1 × 10^-3 min^-1, while the photocatalytic activity of PbMoO₄ was 26.0% and 3.9 × 10^-3 min^-1. The reactions in the presence of radical quenchers indicated that holes (h⁺) and superoxide radicals (O₂^-) were the dominant active species for photodegradation. In different water matrices, for 150 mg L^-1 TC solution the photocatalytic activity of optimal photocatalyst decreased as follows: ultrapure water > artificial sewage > farm sewage > municipal sewage. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited good stability over five cycles. Therefore, BC doped PbMoO₄ provides a useful strategy for improving the photocatalytic ability of PbMoO₄-based photocatalysts and offers a promising method for water purification.

The degradation of paraben preservatives: Recent progress and sustainable approaches toward photocatalysis

Parabens are a class of compounds primarily used as antimicrobial preservatives in pharmaceutical products, cosmetics, and foodstuff. Their widely used field leads to increasing concentrations detected in various environmental matrices like water, soil, and sludges, even detected in human tissue, blood, and milk. Treatment techniques, including chemical advanced oxidation, biological degradation, and physical adsorption processes, have been widely used to complete mineralization or to degrade parabens into less complicated byproducts. All kinds of processes were reviewed to give a completed picture of parabens removal. In light of these treatment techniques, advanced photocatalysis, which is emerging rapidly and widely as an economical, efficient, and environmentally-friendly technique, has received considerable attention. TiO₂-based and non-TiO₂-based photocatalysts play an essential role in parabens degradation. The effect of experimental parameters, such as the concentration of targeted parabens, concentration of photocatalyst, reaction time, and initial solution pH, even the presence of radical scavengers, are surveyed and compared from the literature. Some representative parabens such as methylparaben, propylparaben, and benzylparaben have been successfully studied the reaction pathways and their intermediates in their degradation process. As reported in the literature, the degradation of parabens involves the production of highly reactive species, mainly hydroxyl radicals. These reactive radicals would attack the paraben preservatives, break, and finally mineralize them into simpler inorganic and nontoxic molecules. Concluding perspectives on the challenges and opportunities for photocatalysis toward parabens remediation are also intensively highlighted.

Bismuth vanadate/MXene (BiVO4/Ti3C2) heterojunction composite: enhanced interfacial control charge transfer for highly efficient visible light photocatalytic activity

We have synthesized BiVO4/Ti3C2 nanocomposite via a low-cost hydrothermal method and investigate its photocatalytic degradation activity against monoazo (methyl orange) and diazo dye (Congo red) in an aqueous solution under visible light. The physiochemical characterization exhibited that the addition of MXene in pristine BiVO4 nanocomposite led to an increase in specific surface area and reduction in optical band gap energy. MXene also helps in enhancing visible light response via a higher electron-hole pair generation rate and long lifetime. The synthesized BiVO4/Ti3C2 heterojunction composite exhibited 99.5 % degradation efficiency within 60 min for Congo red and 99.1 % for methyl orange solution in 130 min owed to a large specific surface area (1.79 m2/g), reduced band gap (1.99 eV), and low recombination rate of charge carriers. The chemical mechanism for BiVO4/Ti3C2 nanocomposite proposes that Ti3C2 role-plays as electron capture because of the higher potential of MXenes, tuning band gap energy which paves the way to excellent photocatalytic action. This work opens a new basis for developing Ti3C2 based promising and inexpensive co-catalyst for efficient solar utilization in photocatalytic-related applications in the future.

Graphitic carbon nitride/biochar composite synthesized by a facile ball-milling method for the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of enrofloxacin

In order to enhance the removal performance of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) on organic pollutant, a simultaneous process of adsorption and photocatalysis was achieved via the compounding of biochar and g-C₃N₄. In this study, g-C₃N₄ was obtained by a condensation reaction of melamine at 550°C. Then the g-C₃N₄/biochar composites were synthesized by ball milling biochar and g-C₃N₄ together, which was considered as a simple, economical, and green strategy. The characterization of resulting g-C₃N₄/biochar suggested that biochar and g-C₃N₄ achieved effective linkage. The adsorption and photocatalytic performance of the composites were evaluated with enrofloxacin (EFA) as a model pollutant. The result showed that all the g-C₃N₄/biochar composites displayed higher adsorption and photocatalytic performance to EFA than that of pure g-C₃N₄. The 50% g-C₃N₄/biochar performed best and removed 45.2% and 81.1% of EFA (10 mg/L) under darkness and light with a dosage of 1 mg/mL, while g-C₃N₄ were 19.0% and 27.3%, respectively. Besides, 50% g-C₃N₄/biochar showed the highest total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency (65.9%). Radical trapping experiments suggested that superoxide radical (•O₂^-) and hole (h⁺) were the main active species in the photocatalytic process. After 4 cycles, the composite still exhibited activity for catalytic removal of EFA.

Paraben Compounds—Part II: An Overview of Advanced Oxidation Processes for Their Degradation

Water scarcity represents a problem for billions of people and is expected to get worse in the future. To guarantee people’s water needs, the use of “first-hand water” or the reuse of wastewater must be done. Wastewater treatment and reuse are favorable for this purpose, since first-hand water is scarce and the economic needs for the exploration of this type of water are increasing. In wastewater treatment, it is important to remove contaminants of emerging concern, as well as pathogenic agents. Parabens are used in daily products as preservatives and are detected in different water sources. These compounds are related to different human health problems due to their endocrine-disrupting behavior, as well as several problems in animals. Thus, their removal from water streams is essential to achieve safe reusable water. Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) are considered very promising technologies for wastewater treatment and can be used as alternatives or as complements of the conventional wastewater treatments that are inefficient in the removal of such contaminants. Different AOP technologies such as ozonation, catalytic ozonation, photocatalytic ozonation, Fenton’s, and photocatalysis, among others, have already been used for parabens abatement. This manuscript critically overviews several AOP technologies used in parabens abatement. These treatments were evaluated in terms of ecotoxicological assessment since the resulting by-products of parabens abatement can be more toxic than the parent compounds. The economic aspect was also analyzed to evaluate and compare the considered technologies.

Preparation of magnetic biochar and its application in catalytic degradation of organic pollutants: A review

In recent years, magnetic biochar (MBC) has been greatly concerned because of its magnetic separation characteristics, and has been successfully used as a catalyst in the catalytic degradation of organic pollutants. However, there is currently a lack of a more systematic summary of MBC preparation methods, and no detailed overview of the catalytic mechanism of MBC catalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants. Therefore, we carry out this work to fill the above gaps. At first, we summarize the raw materials, preparation methods, and types of MBC in detail, and emphasize the MBC prepared by iron-containing sludge. Then, the catalytic mechanisms of MBC in peroxydisulfate, peroxymonosulfate, Fenton-like, photocatalysis, and NaBH₄ systems are carefully summarized, highlighting the contribution of various parts of MBC in catalysis. The degradation efficiency of organic pollutants in the above systems is evaluated. Finally, the stability and reusability of MBC catalysts are evaluated. In conclusion, this review contributes a meager force to the future development of MBC.

Insights into the Mechanism of the Bi/BiVO4 Composites for Improved Photocatalytic Activity

The increasing concentration of residual ciprofloxacin (CIP) can cause potential harm to the environment. Photocatalysis has been regarded as an effective method for the degradation of CIP. Bi/BiVO4 with excellent photocatalytic performance was synthesized partial reduction with NaBH4. The structure, morphology, composition, and optical performance of BiVO4 and Bi/BiVO4 were characterized by a variety of techniques. The results showed that the Bi/BiVO4 exhibits high photocatalytic activity in the degradation of CIP. Comparison of BiVO4 and Bi/BiVO4 has lower photoluminescence intensity and higher photocurrent responses intensity. The introduction of Bi made Bi/BiVO4 have a higher charge separation efficiency and generate more active free radicals. In addition, the radical trapping experiments revealed that superoxide free radicals and holes were the main active free radicals during the degradation of CIP. The pathway of CIP degradation was investigated through high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and a possible degradation mechanism was proposed.

Conversion of sewage sludge into biochar: A potential resource in water and wastewater treatment

Production of biochar from sewage sludge (SS) is consistent with the goal of sustainable resource recovery and promotes a wastewater-based circular economy. Thermochemical conversion of SS to biochar resolves two major issues simultaneously as it minimizes the cost of disposal and acts as a resource to eliminate the toxic contaminants from water and wastewater. The reusability and ready availability of the biochar, irrespective of the season, makes it an economically viable material for wastewater treatment. In this review, explicit insights into the production, modification and usage of SS derived biochar are provided including (i) the production yield, (ii) characteristic features such as physical, chemical, electrochemical and morphological aspects, and (iii) impact on contaminant removal through adsorption, catalytic and electrochemical processes. Particular attention is given to the use of SS derived biochar as an adsorbent for contaminants present in wastewaters, the potential use of biochar as a catalyst and support material in advanced oxidation processes and the use of biochars as an electrode material. The effect of pyrolysis conditions and co-pyrolysis with other materials on biochar properties is explored and insight is provided into the toxicity of biochar components present at different process conditions.

Does soluble starch improve the removal of Cr(VI) by nZVI loaded on biochar?

A novel material that nano zero valent iron (nZVI) loaded on biochar with stable starch stabilization (nZVI/SS/BC) was synthesized and used for the removal of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] in simulated wastewater. It was indicated that as the pyrolysis temperature of rice straw increased, the removal rate of Cr(VI) by nZVI/SS/BC first increased and then decreased. nZVI/SS/BC made from biochar pyrolyzed at 600 °C (nZVI/SS/BC600) had the highest removal efficiency and was suitable for a wide pH range (pH 2.1-10.0). The results showed that 99.67% of Cr(VI) was removed by nZVI/SS/BC600, an increase of 45.93% compared to the control group, which did not add soluble starch during synthesis. The pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model were more in line with reaction. The maximum adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) by nZVI/SS/BC600 was 122.86 mg·g^-1. The properties of the material were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the nZVI particles were uniformly supported on the biochar, and the BET surface areas of nZVI/SS/BC was 40.4837 m²·g^-1, an increase of 8.79 times compared with the control group. Mechanism studies showed that soluble starch reduced the formation of metal oxides, thereby improving the reducibility of the material, and co-precipitates were formed during the reaction. All results indicated that nZVI/SS/BC was a potential repair material that can effectively overcome the limitations of nZVI and achieve efficient and rapid repair of Cr(VI).

Carbothermal synthesis of biochar-supported metallic silver for enhanced photocatalytic removal of methylene blue and antimicrobial efficacy

Pinewood biochar (PBC)-supported metallic silver (Ag^o) was prepared via a one-step carbothermal reduction route (AgH) or a wet-chemistry reduction method (AgW). XRD and SEM confirmed Ag^o was soldered on PBC matrix. Low methylene blue (MB) sorption was observed for unsupported Ag^o nanoparticles (AgNP), AgH and AgW. Under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation, net MB degradation by AgH (15.88 g kg^-1) was higher than that of AgW (12.50 g kg^-1) and AgNP (10.27 g kg^-1). TOC removal percentages after degradation corresponded largely to reduction of MB concentrations in solution, indicating MB was dominantly mineralized. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) revealed that MB was degraded by reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydroxyl radical (OH), superoxide radical (O₂-) and singlet oxygen (¹O₂). The scavenging experiments further suggested that OH scavengers suppressed MB degradation to a greater extent than other quenchers. Compared to AgW, AgH possessed greater abundance of persistent free radicals, which enhance ROS generation. PBC could also improve separation of electron-hole (e^--h⁺) pairs and enhance electron transfer ascribing to favorable carbon structure. Besides, PBC-Ag^o maintained good antimicrobial efficacy over E.coli DH5α. This work presented a facile carbothermal route to prepare Ag^o-based photocatalysts for dye removal and microbial inhibition in industrial wastewater.

Chemical insight into the adsorption of reactive wool dyes onto amine-functionalized magnetite/silica core-shell from industrial wastewaters

Fe₃O₄ NPs are synthesized by the co-precipitation technique. Moreover, the pristine was coated by silica layer and then functionalized by 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTS). The sample possessed saturation magnetization with value equals 37 emu/g which made them to easily separate using external magnet. FT-IR, TGA, EDX, and VSM confirmed the aminosilane loading. The surface topography and composition were characterized using XRD, TEM, SEM, BJH, and BET methods. Where adsorption capacity of the surface toward the removal of four commercial reactive wool dyes (RD), Itowol black (IB), Itowol Red (IR), Sunzol black (SB), and Lanasol blue (LB) have been investigated. The influence variables such as pH, adsorbent dose, dye concentration, and temperature were calculated. Where experimental results fitted to Langmuir isotherm model with q_max equals 161.29, 151.51, 123.45, and 98.20 mg/g, for IR, LB, SB, and IB respectively. The results showed that the RD adsorption described by pseudo-second-order kinetics. The calculated thermodynamic parameters indicated that RD adsorption onto Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-NH₂ was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. The possible mechanisms monitoring RD adsorption on the surface included hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. The reusability of adsorbent carried with four cycles without releasing of magnetite and thus excluding the potential hazardous of nanomaterial to the environment. Graphical abstract.

A critical review of different factors governing the fate of pesticides in soil under biochar application

Pesticides are extensively used in the modern agricultural system. The inefficient and extensive use of pesticides during the last 5 to 6 decades inadvertently led to serious deterioration of environmental quality with health risk to living organisms, including humans. It is important to use some environmentally-friendly and sustainable approaches to remediate, restore and maintain soil quality. Biochar has gained considerable attention globally as a promising soil amendment because it has the ability to adsorb and as such minimize the bioavailability of pesticides in soils. This review emphasizes the recent trends and implications of biochar in pesticide-contaminated soils, as well as highlights need of the pesticides use and associated environmental issues in context of the biochar application. The overarching aim of this review is to signify the role of biochar on primary processes such as effect of biochar on the persistence, mineralization, leaching and efficacy of pesticides in soil. Notably, the effects of biochar on pesticide adsorption-desorption, degradation and bioavailability under various operating/production conditions are critically discussed. This review delineates the indirect impact of biochar on pesticides persistence in soils and proposes key recommendations for future research which are essential for the remediation and restoration of pesticides-impacted soils.

Recent Progress in Biochar-Based Photocatalysts for Wastewater Treatment: Synthesis, Mechanisms, and Applications

Biochar (BC) is a carbon-rich material produced from pyrolysis of biomass. In addition to its low toxicity, environmental compatibility, and low cost, BC has the desired advantages of well-developed mesoporous structure and abundant surface functional groups. In recent years, BC-based photocatalysts (BCPs) have played a significant role in many environmental fields. In this paper, we highlight the current progress and several exciting results of BCPs by focusing on their synthesis, characterization, mechanisms, and applications in wastewater treatment. Details on various preparation methods include sol–gel, hydrothermal/solvothermal, ultrasound, calcination, and in situ methods are summarized and discussed. The underlying mechanisms and the applications of BCPs for different semiconductors are reviewed. Furthermore, some future trends and potentials are outlined.

The improvement of photocatalysis O2 production over BiVO4 with amorphous FeOOH shell modification

A novel amorphous FeOOH modified BiVO₄ photocatalyst (A-FeOOH/BiVO₄) was successfully produced and characterized by various techniques. The results showed that amorphous FeOOH with about 2 nm thickness evenly covered on BiVO₄ surface, which caused resultant A-FeOOH/BiVO₄ exhibiting higher visible light photocatalytic performance for producing O₂ from water than BiVO₄. When the covered amount of amorphous FeOOH was 8%, the resultant photocatalyst possessed the best photocatalytic performance. To find the reasons for the improvement of photocatalytic property, electrochemical experiments, DRS, PL and BET, were also measured, the experimental results indicated that interface effect between amorphous FeOOH and BiVO₄ could conduce to migration of photogenerated charge, and exhibit stronger light responded capacity. These positive factors promoted A-FeOOH/BiVO₄ presenting improved the photocatalytic performance. In a word, the combination of amorphous FeOOH with BiVO₄ is an effective strategy to conquer important challenges in photocatalysis field.

Evaluating Biochar Impact on Topramezone Adsorption Behavior on Soil under No-Tillage and Rotary Tillage Treatments: Isotherms and Kinetics

The evaluation of biochar application on the adsorption behavior of topramezone on soil under no-tillage (NT) and rotary tillage treatments (RT) has been assessed. Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectrometry (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller) (BET) were used for the biochar characterization. Batch experiments were carried out in a laboratory to assess the adsorption of topramezone on soil through equilibrium and kinetic modeling under biochar addition. The clay content has been found to be higher under NT (18.24 ± 0.01) than under RT (15.91 ± 0.02). The total organic carbon was higher under NT. The topramezone adsorption equilibrium reached after 8 and 12 h, for NT and RT, respectively. The kinetic and thermodynamic analyses showed the adsorption under both treatments matched with pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models, respectively. After biochar addition, the pesticide adsorption capacity (40 < 25 < 15 °C) increased with decreasing temperature suggesting an exothermic adsorption process while negative values of Gibbs free energy (ΔG); −1848.07 and −366.531 J mol⁻¹; for the soil under NT and RT at 25 °C, respectively, indicated spontaneous adsorption. Negative entropy values (ΔS); −21.92 and −78.296 J mol⁻¹K⁻¹, for NT and RT, respectively, explained a decreased randomness process. The enthalpy was higher (p < 0.05) under RT (−23,274.6 J mol⁻¹) than under NT (−1313.73 J mol⁻¹). Conclusively, it was shown that the topramezone adsorption capacity was higher under NT, and biochar addition increased more pesticide adsorption under NT than under RT.

Effects of humic acid-modified magnetic Fe3O4/MgAl-layered double hydroxide on the plant growth, soil enzyme activity, and metal availability

The synthesis of a humic acid-layered double hydroxide (HA-LDH) hybrid was purposed for the remediation of contaminated soils in mining area. The hybrid was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrometer. In order to investigate the effect of HA-LDH on the mine soil, greenhouse experiments of Artemisia ordosica were carried out under different concentrations of amendments (0, 1%, 3%, 5%, 7%). The plant growth, metal availability, and soil enzyme activities were studied to determine the effects of HA-LDH. The mine soil with 5% HA-LDH was the optimum proportion, and the growth of Artemisia ordosica was in good status. The HA-LDH and Artemisia ordosica could effectively decrease the bioavailability of heavy metals (such as Pb, Cr, Ni, Cd, Zn, and As) in the mine soil, and improve the enzyme activities of β-glucosidase, urease, and phosphatase. The HA-LDH with magnetism could be easily separated. The characteristics and reusability of HA-LDH could be well maintained after five cycles of remediation. Consequently, the HA-LDH is promising for the remediation of contaminated soils in mining area.

A novel waste activated sludge multistage utilization strategy for preparing carbon-based Fenton-like catalysts: Catalytic performance assessment and micro-interfacial mechanisms

Waste activated sludge (WAS) contains many anionic functional groups which can interact with heavy metal ions through electrostatic action and complexation reactions. The transition metals adsorbed in WAS can catalyze sludge pyrolysis in anaerobic conditions and improve structural properties of organic matter. In this work, a multistage WAS utilization process for preparing the carbon-based Fenton-like catalysis materials is proposed. More specifically, WAS is firstly used as an adsorbent for heavy metals (Cu and Ni) removal, and then complexes are converted into heterogeneous Fenton-like carbon-based catalysts through oxygen-free pyrolysis. The mechanisms of interactions between extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and metals are investigated, and the physicochemical properties of sludge-based carbons (SBC) are comprehensively characterized using varies techniques. It is found that WAS is an excellent adsorbent for Cu and Ni removal, which is mainly due to the coordination and electrostatic interactions between EPS and heavy metals. Cu and Ni adsorbed in WAS significantly improved the porous structure of SBC. Both adsorption and catalytic oxidization of Cu/Ni-SBC contribute the removal of E2 in real wastewater. The E2 removal mechanism is explored by electron-spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) analysis, and it is found that both of ^.O₂^- and ^.OH radicals are responsible for E2 degradation in Cu(II)-SBC-H₂O₂, while ^.O₂^- radicals contributes to E2 degradation in Ni(II)-SBC-H₂O₂ system, so the former performed better than the latter in total removal of E2. Besides, Cu(II) and Cu(I) are both formed in Cu(II)-SBC during the oxidation process, while only Ni(II) is found in the Ni(II)-SBC-H₂O₂ process, confirming that different catalytic oxidation reactions are occurred in the Cu(II)-SBC-H₂O₂ and Ni(II)-SBC-H₂O₂ processes. This study facilitates a great strategy to the sludge multi-stage circulating utilization and a better understanding about the role of the Cu/Ni existed in SBC during the estrogens removal process.

Facile hydrothermal synthesis of magnetic adsorbent CoFe2O4/MMT to eliminate antibiotics in aqueous phase: tetracycline and ciprofloxacin

A highly resourceful, eco-friendly, and recyclable magnetic adsorbent based on montmorillonite (CoFe₂O₄/MMT) was fabricated via a facile hydrothermal method to harvest tetracycline (TC) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) from pollutant water. The prepared adsorbent was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and VSM methods to comprehend its structure, morphology, and magnetism. Effects of experimental parameters including solution pH, adsorption time, initial concentration, and ion strength were studied in details. The experimental adsorption data of TC and CIP fitted into pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm, respectively. The maximum adsorptions of TC and CIP could reach up to 240.91 and 224.00 mg/g. The thermodynamic study indicates that the adsorption process is spontaneous. In addition, the antibiotics can be further degraded under visible light environment and the magnetic sorbent can also be thermally regenerated. Graphical abstract ᅟ.

Insights into the simultaneous removal of Cr6+ and Pb2+ by a novel sewage sludge-derived biochar immobilized nanoscale zero valent iron: Coexistence effect and mechanism

Cr⁶⁺ and Pb²⁺ are both highly toxic pollutants and commonly co-exist in some industrial effluents and contaminated waters. In this study, simultaneous removal of Cr⁶⁺ and Pb²⁺ by a novel sewage sludge-derived biochar immobilized nanoscale zero-valent iron (SSB-nZVI) was systematically investigated. It was well demonstrated that a porous structure was successfully formed on the SSB-nZVI when the starch was used as an additive. A synergistic effect on the adsorption and reduction over the SSB-nZVI was achieved, resulting in nearly 90 and 82% of Cr⁶⁺ and Pb²⁺ removal within 30 min, respectively. Cr⁶⁺ was reduced prior to Pb²⁺. A low pH could accelerate the corrosion of nZVI as well as phosphate leaching. When Malachite green was added as a coexisting organic pollutant, its effective removal was found due to the formation of a Fenton-like system. The SSB-nZVI could be run consecutively three times with a relatively satisfactory performance. Most of Cr⁶⁺ was converted into Cr₂O₃ and Cr(OH)₃ on the SSB-nZVI surface, whereas most of Pb²⁺ species existed as Pb(OH)₂ (or PbO). A possible reaction mechanism on the SSB-nZVI involved the adsorption, reduction and precipitation of both Cr⁶⁺ and Pb²⁺ over the particles. Present study sheds light on the insight of the fate and transport of Cr⁶⁺ and Pb²⁺ in aquatic environment, as well provides helpful guide for the remediation of coexistence of pollutants in real applications.

Magnetic biochar-based manganese oxide composite for enhanced fluoroquinolone antibiotic removal from water

Magnetic biochar-based manganese oxide composite (MMB) and raw biochar (BC) were synthesized via pyrolysis at a temperature of 500 °C under anoxic conditions of potato stems and leaves, characterized, and successfully used for the removal of norfloxacin (NOR), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and enrofloxacin (ENR) as representative compounds of fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs). Characterization results suggested that Fe₃O₄ and MnO_x are the dominant crystals in MMB. MMB possessed large surface area and pore volume than BC. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the maximum adsorption abilities of MMB for norfloxacin (NOR), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and enrofloxacin (ENR) were 6.94, 8.37, and 7.19 mg g^-1. In comparison to BC, the adsorption abilities of MMB increased 1.2, 1.5, and 1.6 times for NOR, CIP, and ENR, respectively. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model correlated satisfactorily to the experimental data. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption processes were spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption capacity of MMB decreased with increasing solution pH (between 3.0 and 10.0) and increasing ionic strength (0.001-0.1). The MMB with high FQ removal efficiency, easy separation, and desirable regeneration ability may have promising environmental applications for the removal of fluoroquinolone antibiotics from water environment.
