Unique fluorescence behavior of dyes on the clay minerals surface: Surface Fixation Induced Emission (S-FIE)

Fluorescence enhancement of benzimidazolium derivative on clay nanosheets by surface-fixation induced emission (S-FIE)

The photophysical behaviors of benzimidazolium derivative [4-(1,3-dimethylbenzimidazol-3-imu-2-yl)-N, N-diphenylaniline (2-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)-1,3-dimethyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-3-ium)] (BID) in water, organic solvents and on synthetic saponite were investigated. The fluorescence quantum yield (Φf) of BID was 0.91 on the saponite surface under the optimal condition, while that in water was 0.010. Such fluorescence enhancement on the inorganic surface is called "surface-fixation induced emission (S-FIE)". This fluorescence enhancement ratio for BID is significantly high compared to that of conventional S-FIE active dyes. From the values of Φf and the excited lifetime, the non-radiative deactivation rate constant (knr) and radiative deactivation rate constant (kf) of BID on the saponite surface and in water were determined. Results showed that the factors for fluorescence enhancement were both the increase of kf and the decrease of knr on the saponite surface; especially, knr decreased by more than two orders due to the effect of nanosheets.

Controversial Issues Related to Dye Adsorption on Clay Minerals: A Critical Review

This critical review points out the most serious and problematic issues to be found in the literature on the adsorption of dyes on clay minerals. The introduction draws attention to the fundamental problems, namely the insufficient characterization of adsorbents, the influence of impurities on the adsorption of dyes, and the choice of inappropriate models for the description of the very complex systems that clay minerals and their systems represent. This paper discusses the main processes accompanying adsorption in colloidal systems of clay minerals. The relationship between the stability of the colloidal systems and the adsorption of dye molecules is analyzed. The usual methodological procedures for determining and evaluating the adsorption of dyes are critically reviewed. A brief overview and examples of modified clay minerals and complex systems for the adsorption of organic dyes are summarized. This review is a guide for avoiding some faults in characterizing the adsorption of organic dyes on clay minerals, to improve the procedure for determining adsorption, to evaluate results correctly, and to find an appropriate theoretical interpretation. The main message of this article is a critical analysis of the current state of the research in this field, but at the same time, it is a guide on how to avoid the most common problems and mistakes.

Adsorption of Dye Molecules and Its Potential for the Development of Photoactive Hybrid Materials Based on Layered Silicates

The present paper gives a brief account of the latest advances in understanding of the mechanism and implications of dye adsorption with a special focus on layered silicate surfaces. It has been clearly demonstrated that the controlled adsorption of novel or already well-known dyes has equally great yet unexplored potential. In principle, the well-engineered surface confinement of the molecules may lead to their aggregation, adsorption, or intercalation-induced fluorescence emission even with conventional dyes, which are not considered as luminophores in solutions or in the solid state. We envision the utilization of silicate-based heterogeneous systems to produce novel polymer blended films or structured liquids, as well as to develop a plethora of other photophysical and biomedical applications.

Information-Storage Expansion Enabled by a Resilient Aggregation-Induced-Emission-Active Nanocomposite Hydrogel

Advanced materials with high performance and distinctive function are one of the main driving forces for the development of human society. The selection of appropriate materials and adequately utilizing their features to apply them in a specific area rationally are of great significance but remain challenging. Herein, an aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active nanocomposite (NC) hydrogel is developed by introducing a pH-responsive AIE luminogen (AIEgen) into a Laponite XLS/polyacrylamide-based NC hydrogel (Laponite is a trademark of the company BYK Additives Ltd.). The AIEgen can protonate to interact with the negatively charged clay through the electrostatic interaction, which results in a drastic fluorescence enhancement due to the restriction of intramolecular motion by the rigid clay to the protonated AIEgen. This behavior facilitates the input of fluorescent information with a high contrast ratio in the hydrogel by acid stimulation. Moreover, by utilizing the excellent resilience of the hydrogel, hierarchically inputting and displaying the information in the original and stretched states of the hydrogel film is realized, which achieves information-storage expansion and dual-encryption via switching between stretching and restoring the film. This work showcases fully and synergistically utilizing the superiorities of various advanced materials to achieve superior applications and should guide the future development of advanced materials in emerging areas.

"In-water" Dehydration Reaction of an Aromatic Diol on an Inorganic Surface

The effect of a synthetic saponite surface on the "in-water" dehydration reaction of diol was examined using 4-formyl-1-methylquinolinium salt (MQu⁺) as a substrate. The equilibrium between aldehyde (MQu⁺-Aldehyde) and diol (MQu⁺-Diol) was affected by the surrounding environment. The equilibrium behavior was observed by ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and UV-vis absorption measurements. Although MQu⁺ was completely in the form of MQu⁺-Diol in water, the equilibrium almost shifted to the MQu⁺-Aldehyde side when MQu⁺ was adsorbed on the saponite surface in water. In addition, the MQu⁺-Aldehyde ratio depended on the negative charge density of saponite. The factors that determine MQu⁺-Aldehyde: MQu⁺-Diol ratio were discussed from the thermodynamic analysis of the system. These data indicate that the electrostatic interaction between the charged saponite surface and MQu⁺ stabilized the aldehyde side enthalpically and destabilized it entropically. The major reason for these results is considered to be the difference in adsorption stabilization between MQu⁺-Aldehyde and MQu⁺-Diol on saponite surfaces.

Effects of the Surface Charge Density of Clay Minerals on Surface-Fixation Induced Emission of Acridinium Derivatives

Surface-fixation induced emission is a fluorescence enhancement phenomenon, which is expressed when dye molecules satisfy a specific adsorption condition on the anionic clay surface. The photophysical behaviors of two types of cationic acridinium derivatives [10-methylacridinium perchlorate (Acr+) and 10-methyl-9-phenylacridinium perchlorate (PhAcr+)] on the synthetic saponites with different anionic charge densities were investigated. Under the suitable conditions, the fluorescence quantum yield (Φf) of PhAcr+ was enhanced 22.3 times by the complex formation with saponite compared to that in water without saponite. As the inter-negative charge distance of saponite increased from 1.04 to 1.54 nm, the Φf of PhAcr+ increased 1.25 times. In addition, the increase in the negative charge distance caused the increase in the integral value of the extinction coefficient and the radiative deactivation rate constant (k f) and the decrease in the nonradiative deactivation rate constant. It should be noted that the 2.3 times increase in k f is the highest among the reported values for the effect of clay. From these results, it was concluded that the photophysical properties of dyes can be modulated by changing the charge density of clay minerals.

Adsorchromism: Molecular Nanoarchitectonics at 2D Nanosheets-Old Chemistry for Advanced Chromism

Chromism induced by changes in the electronic states of dye molecules due to surface adsorption is termed "adsorchromism" in this article. These changes of molecular electronic states are induced by protonation, aggregation, intramolecular structural changes, and other processes, depending on the surface environment. Intramolecular structural changes, such as co-planarization and decreased molecular motion are the most characteristic and interesting behavior of dye molecules at the surfaces, resulting in spectral shift and/or emission enhancement. In this review, adsorchromism at the surfaces of layered materials are summarized since their flexibility of interlayer distance, surface flatness, and transparency is suitable for a detailed observation. By understanding the relationship between adsorchromism and the electronic states of molecules on the surfaces, it will be possible to induce some desired functions which can be realized simply by adsorption, instead of complicated organic syntheses. Thus, adsorchromism has potential applications such as effective solar energy harvesting systems, or biological/chemical sensors to visualize environmental changes.

Changes in Optical Properties upon Dye-Clay Interaction: Experimental Evaluation and Applications

The development of hybrid materials with unique optical properties has been a challenge for the creation of high-performance composites. The improved photophysical and photochemical properties observed when fluorophores interact with clay minerals, as well as the accessibility and easy handling of such natural materials, make these nanocomposites attractive for designing novel optical hybrid materials. Here, we present a method of promoting this interaction by conjugating dyes with chitosan. The fluorescent properties of conjugated dye–montmorillonite (MMT) hybrids were similar to those of free dye–MMT hybrids. Moreover, we analyzed the relationship between the changes in optical properties of the dye interacting with clay and its structure and defined the physical and chemical mechanisms that take place upon dye–MMT interactions leading to the optical changes. Conjugation to chitosan additionally ensures stable adsorption on clay nanoplatelets due to the strong electrostatic interaction between chitosan and clay. This work thus provides a method to facilitate the design of solid-state hybrid nanomaterials relevant for potential applications in bioimaging, sensing and optical purposes.

Electronic interactions between a quaternary pyridyl-β-diketonate and anionic clay nanosheets facilitate intense photoluminescence

Electrostatic interactions between a quaternary pyridyl-β-diketonate and anionic charged nanosheets were observed to produce a highly emissive dispersion in a rich water solution. A greater fluorescence quantum yield of approximately 50% was obtained when a luminogenic β-diketonate, 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-(3-hydroxyethyl-pyridinium bromide)-1,3-propandione (prepared by the Claisen condensation reaction and subsequent quaternization), was molecularly dispersed and enclosed by a couple of atomically flat ultrathin (approximately 1.0 nm) silicate sheets of anionic layered clay. By accommodating β-diketonate into a narrow interlamellar space (approximately 0.4 nm distance), the molecular motion was suppressed, as confirmed by a smaller non-radiative relaxation rate constant, which was obtained by time-resolved luminescence and quantum yield measurements. Because the dense packing of β-diketonate quenched the excited state, the isolation of luminogens by the co-adsorption of photochemical inert cations (tetramethylammonium and benzylammonium) was prevented by concentration quenching. A lower quantum yield was obtained by expanding the interlayer distance above 1.0 nm by co-adsorbing a photo-inactive water-soluble polymer, poly(vinylpyrrolidone). Therefore, the fixation and spatial separation of β-diketonate in the narrow interlayer space was determined to be essential for obtaining strong emission.

Tailoring a hybrid three-component photoinitiating system for 3D printing

In the field of additive manufacturing DLP vat technologies are promising 3D printing techniques. The need of highly efficient photoiniating systems drives us to the development of photocyclic 3-component initiators. In order to improve the 3D printing sensitivity, we present in this paper the use of synthesized clay to tune up the photochemistry underlying the initiating radical production. Therefore, a three-component initiating system, based on a cationic dye, two coinitiators and with a clay filler suitable for DLP 3D printing of acrylate resins leading to high quality of parts and low printing time, is developed.

Thermodynamic study of the adsorption of acridinium derivatives on the clay surface

In this study, the adsorption behavior of mono-cationic acridinium derivatives on a synthetic clay mineral (Sumecton SA) was investigated. The acridinium derivatives were adsorbed on the clay surface without aggregation, as found from the changes in the absorption spectra of the acridinium derivatives with SSA and without SSA represented by two-component equilibrium systems of adsorbed and non-adsorbed components. Following the Langmuir isotherm analysis, the adsorption equilibrium constants and maximum adsorption amounts were determined for acridinium derivatives, and the Gibbs free energy change (ΔG) was calculated to be in the range of −33.8 to 40.0 kJ mol⁻¹ from the adsorption equilibrium constants. These results indicated that the adsorption of acridinium derivatives on the clay surface was an exergonic reaction. Moreover, thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpy change (ΔH) and entropy change (ΔS) were obtained from the temperature effect experiments. For all acridinium derivatives, ΔH (from −7.82 to −26.0 kJ mol⁻¹) and ΔS (0.047–0.088 kJ mol⁻¹ K⁻¹) were found to be negative and positive, respectively. It was suggested that not only electrostatic interactions, but also van der Waals forces and hydrophobic interactions played an important role in the adsorption of cationic aromatic molecules on the clay surface. Because these thermodynamic parameters showed a strong correlation with the molecular cross-sectional area of acridinium derivatives, it was suggested that the contribution of hydrophobic interactions became smaller as the molecular cross-sectional area became larger.

Thermodynamic studies indicate that van der Waals and hydrophobic interactions contribute to the adsorption of mono-cationic acridinium derivatives on the clay surface.

An overview of the recent synthesis and functionalization methods of saponite clay

In this overview, a summary on the most common intercalation compounds based on saponite clays is reported. The attention is also focused on the one-pot methods for the production of functional saponite clays for different applications.

Factors for the emission enhancement of dimidium in specific media such as in DNA and on a clay surface

Dimidium (3,8-diamino-5-methyl-6-phenylphenanthridinium: NH2PhP) is a well-known fluorophore as a DNA probe, although its fluorescence enhancement mechanism is not clear. In this study, we investigated the fluorescence enhancement mechanism of NH2PhP on a clay surface by observing the fluorescence behavior. Four systematically selected phenanthridinium derivatives (PDs): NH2PhP, 3,8-bisdimethylamino-5-methyl-6-phenylphenanthridinium (NMe2PhP), 5-methyl-6-phenylphenanthridinium (PhP) and 5-methylphenanthridinium (P) and synthetic clay were used as guest and host materials, respectively. It was revealed that the suppression of hydrogen bonding with water (N-HOH or NH-OH2) is the dominant factor for the fluorescence enhancement on the clay surface for NH2PhP and NMe2PhP. In addition, judging from the fluorescence enhancement for NH2PhP, NMe2PhP and PhP and no fluorescence enhancement for P on the clay surface, the suppression of rotation of the phenyl ring was indicated to make a partial contribution to the fluorescence enhancement mechanism. Because the fluorescence enhancement behavior was quite similar on the clay surface and in DNA, the obtained results afford an important clue to discuss the fluorescence enhancement mechanism of NH2PhP in DNA.

Palladium-Catalyzed Double Carbonylative Cyclization of Benzoins: Synthesis and Photoluminescence of Bis-Ester-Bridged Stilbenes

A palladium-catalyzed double carbonylative cyclization of benzoins has been developed, which realizes the synthesis of bis-ester-bridged stilbenes just in two steps from aldehydes. Thus, the obtained fully fused tetracyclic π-systems have a pyrano[3,2- b]pyran-2,6-dione (PPD) core on their center, showing two reversible reductions at low potentials. In addition, their photoluminescence properties are strikingly affected by the aromatic rings fused to the PPD core; bis- thieno-fused PPDs are found to be excellent fluorophores with quantum yields up to 0.98.

Adsorption-Induced Dye Stability of Cationic Dyes on Clay Nanosheets

Rhodamine 6G (R6G) was adsorbed on smectite clays, a natural montmorillonite, a synthetic saponite, and synthetic hectorites, and the decolorization of the dyes upon visible light irradiation was examined for aqueous suspensions and cast films. Excellent dye stability was achieved when a natural montmorillonite was used. Apart from R6G, better photostability was also achieved when the tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) complex was adsorbed on a natural montmorillonite. The excited state of the dye was quenched efficiently by the impurities in the natural montmorillonite. From the relationship between the excited-state quenching (as derived from photoluminescence quantum efficiency and photoluminescence intensity) and the decolorization rate constant, the quenching of the excited state of the dye adsorbed on the natural montmorillonite was proposed as the important mechanism for the stabilization of dyes upon photoirradiation.

Photoluminescence by Intercalation of a Fluorescent β-Diketone Dye into a Layered Silicate

A β-diketone dye was packed into the two-dimensional nanospace of a synthetic smectite (Sumecton SA), which is a cation-exchangeable layered silicate, to induce strong emission owing to molecular packing of the dye. An emissive dye, 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-(4-pyridyl)-1,3-propandione, was prepared through a Claisen condensation reaction; the dye exhibited aggregation-induced emission, which is enhanced emission owing to clustering of molecules to form aggregates in poor solvents or in the solid state. The dye was nonemissive in solution. However, strong green emission was observed because of the restriction of molecular motion when the protonated dye was accommodated into the interlayer nanospace of the silicate layers through cation-exchange reactions. The restricted motion was confirmed by the smaller nonradiative relaxation rate constant obtained by time-resolved luminescence and quantum yield measurements. A moderate dye packing (0.11 mmol/g) in the interlayer space is important to obtain enhanced emission, whereas the intercalation of a large amount of dye (0.27 mmol/g) resulted in concentration quenching. Therefore, the interlayer space of the layered silicate used here was responsible for the strong emission because of moderate packing of the accommodated β-diketones.

Inert Layered Silicate Improves the Electrochemical Responses of a Metal Complex Polymer

A chemically inert, insulating layered silicate (saponite; SP) and an iron(II)-based metallo-supramolecular complex polymer (polyFe) were combined via electrostatic attraction to improve the electrochromic properties of polyFe. Structural characterization indicated that polyFe was intercalated into the SP nanosheets. Interestingly, the redox potential of polyFe was lowered by combining it with SP, and the current was measurable despite the insulating nature of SP. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the decrease in the redox potential observed in the SP-polyFe hybrid was caused by the electrostatic neutralization of the Fe cation in polyFe by the negative charge on SP. Electrochemical analyses indicated that electron transfer occurred through electron hopping across the SP-polyFe hybrid. Control experiments using a metal complex composed of Fe and two 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine ligands (terpyFe) showed that SP contributes to the effective electron hopping. This modulation of the electrochemical properties by the layered silicates could be applied to other electrochemical systems, including hybrids of the redox-active ionic species and ion-exchangeable adsorbents.

Spectroscopic Studies of the Interactions between a Cationic Cyanine Dye and a Synthetic Phyllosilicate: From Photophysics to Hybrid Materials

The interaction of the cationic organic dye Astrazon orange R (AO-R) with the synthetic phyllosilicate Laponite leads to very interesting hybrid materials. Indeed, the Laponite nanoparticles modify the photophysical properties of AO-R, inducing a stabilization of its excited emissive state by preventing ultrafast isomerization. The long-lived emissive clay-dye hybrid complex can be used to develop efficient photoinitiating systems, leading to organic-inorganic hybrid crosslinked polymer materials.

Diameter-controlled Cu nanoparticles on saponite and preparation of film by using spontaneous phase separation

Cu nanoparticles have attracted much attention due to their optical, catalytic, and electrical properties.
