Abstract
In heavy-atom-free organic molecules, the rate of triplet generation through charge recombination, as dictated by the El-Sayed rule, can be enhanced by 101-102 times compared with the rate of spontaneous spin flipping between π-π* orbitals. This mechanism is known as the spin-orbit charge-transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC). Within the framework of the SOCT-ISC mechanism, facilitating the generation of charge-separated (CS) states and suppressing the spin-allowed direct charge recombination to the ground state are pivotal for maximizing the efficiency of generating localized triplet states. Herein, a series of orthogonal aryl-substituted boron-dipyrromethene dyads were studied by time-resolved spectroscopy to unravel the multichannel competitive relationships in the SOCT-ISC mechanism. The energy level of the electron donor and the stabilization of the solvent effect to the charge-transfer state are reflected in the Gibbs free energy changes of the electron transfer and recombination reactions, leading to significantly different triplet quantum yields. Additionally, solvation-induced electronic coupling changes in excited states lead to the fact that the spin-allowed charge recombination rate cannot be well simply predicted by the Marcus inverted region but has to consider the specific excited-state dynamics in optimizing the proportion of triplet generation channels based on charge recombination.

Abstract
The dimerization of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) moieties is an appealing molecular design approach for developing heavy-atom-free triplet photosensitizers (PSs). However, BODIPY dimer-based PSs generally lack target specificity, which limits their clinical use for photodynamic therapy. This study reports the synthesis of two mitochondria-targeting triphenylphosphonium (TPP)-functionalized meso-β directly linked BODIPY dimers (BTPP and BeTPP). Both BODIPY dimers exhibited solvent-polarity-dependent singlet oxygen (1O2) quantum yields, with maximum values of 0.84 and 0.55 for BTPP and BeTPP, respectively, in tetrahydrofuran. The compact orthogonal geometry of the BODIPY dimers facilitated the generation of triplet excited states via photoinduced charge separation (CS) and subsequent spin-orbit charge-transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC) processes and their rates were dependent on the energetic configuration between the frontier molecular orbitals of the two BODIPY subunits. The as-synthesized compounds were amphiphilic and hence formed stable nanoparticles (∼36 nm in diameter) in aqueous solutions, with a zeta potential of ∼33 mV beneficial for mitochondrial targeting. In vitro experiments with MCF-7 and HeLa cancer cells indicated the effective localization of BTPP and BeTPP within cancer-cell mitochondria. Under light irradiation, BTPP and BeTPP exhibited robust photo-induced therapeutic effects in both cell lines, with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of ∼30 and ∼55 nM, respectively.

Abstract
Boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives are prospective organic-based triplet photosensitizers. Since the triplet generation yield of the parent BODIPY is low, heavy atoms are widely used to improve the triplet yield. However, the dimerization of BODIPYs can also significantly improve their ability to produce triplets. Through a comparative study of the triplet formation dynamics of two heavy-atom-free orthogonal covalent BODIPY heterodimers that differ in their dihedral angles, we have demonstrated that the mechanism of spin-orbit charge-transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC) promotes the triplet generation of BODIPY heterodimers in solution. Different from the general understanding of SOCT-ISC, the heterodimer with a smaller dihedral angle and low structural rigidity showed better triplet generation due to (a) the stronger inter-chromophoric interaction in the heterodimer, which promoted the formation of a solvent-stabilized charge-transfer (CT) state, (b) the more favorable energy level alignment with sizeable spin-orbit coupling strength, and (c) the balance between the stabilized singlet CT state and limited direct charge recombination to the ground state in a weakly polar solvent. The complete spectral characterization of the triplet formation dynamics clarified the SOCT-ISC mechanism and important factors affecting the triplet generation in BODIPY heterodimers.

Abstract
A panchromatic light-absorbing [70]fullerene-perylene-BODIPY triad (C70-P-B) was synthesized and applied as a heavy atom-free organic triplet photosensitizer for photooxidation. The photophysical processes were comprehensively investigated by the methods of steady-state spectroscopy, time-resolved spectroscopy, as well as theoretical calculations. C70-P-B shows a strong absorption ability from 300-620 nm. Efficient cascading intramolecular singlet-singlet energy transfer in C70-P-B was confirmed by the luminescence study. The backward triplet excited state energy transfer from C70 moiety to perylene then occurs to populate 3perylene*. Thus, the triplet excited states of C70-P-B are distributed on both C70 and perylene moiety with lifetimes of 23 ± 1 μs and 175 ± 17 μs, respectively. C70-P-B exhibits excellent photooxidation capacity, and its yield of singlet oxygen reaches 0.82. The photooxidation rate constant of C70-P-B is 3.70 times that of C70-Boc and 1.58 times that of MB, respectively. The results in this paper are useful for designing efficient heavy atom-free organic triplet photosensitizers for practical application in photovoltaics, photodynamic therapy, etc.

Abstract
In this work, the photoinduced charge separation (CS) via symmetry breaking in an orthogonal meso-β-linked boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dimer was investigated by polarized transient absorption spectroscopy. The time constant about 0.76 ps of the CS reaction determined in dimethyl sulfoxide is much faster than the solvation dynamics. The observed transient anisotropy of the BODIPY anion band implies that both hole and electron transfers occur with similar probabilities. The bidirectional charge transfer processes suggest that the locally excited state is weakly coupled to the polar solvent, and the solvation coupled excited-state structural relaxation within the BODIPY monomeric unit is rather limited. In combination with the electronic excitation analysis based on time-dependent density-functional theory calculations, we deduced that the CS in the orthogonal BODIPY dimer is enabled via the torsional motion associated with covalently connected BODIPY units, promoting the electronic coupling, and irrelevant to the dynamic solvent relaxation.

Abstract
A simple semiempiric phenomenological approach is developed for quantifying the solvent effect on the absorption and emission properties of BODIPYs. It is based on a new rule describing the linear relationship between the difference (Stokes shift) and the sum (double Gibbs free energy of electron transfer) for absorption and emission wavenumbers derived from a combination of solvent functions of Liptay theory. This rule is correspondent to changes of dipole moments in the ground and excited states. High reliability and advantages of the developed approach in comparison with traditional methods of the analysis of the solvatochromism based on Dimroth-Reichard and Lippert-Mataga solvent scales are illustrated for selected BODIPYs exhibiting positive, negative, and near-zero solvatochromism.

Abstract
A broadband visible light-absorbing [70]fullerene-BODIPY-triphenylamine triad (C70-B-T) has been synthesized and applied as a heavy atom-free organic triplet photosensitizer for photooxidation. By attaching two triphenylmethyl amine units (TPAs) to the π-core of BODIPY via ethynyl linkers, the absorption range of the antenna is extended to 700 nm with a peak at 600 nm. Thus, the absorption spectrum of C70-B-T almost covers the entire UV-visible region (270-700 nm). The photophysical processes are investigated by means of steady-state and transient spectroscopies. Upon photoexcitation at 339 nm, an efficient energy transfer (ET) from TPA to BODIPY occurs both in C70-B-T and B-T, resulting in the appearance of the BODIPY emission at 664 nm. Direct or indirect (via ET) excitation of the BODIPY-part of C70-B-T is followed by photoinduced ET from the antenna to C70, thus the singlet excited state of C70 (1C70*) is populated. Subsequently, the triplet excited state of C70 (3C70*) is produced via the intrinsic intersystem crossing of C70. The photooxidation ability of C70-B-T was studied using 1,5-dihydroxy naphthalene (DHN) as a chemical sensor. The photooxidation efficiency of C70-B-T is higher than that of the individual components of C70-1 and B-T, and even higher than that of methylene blue (MB). The photooxidation rate constant of C70-B-T is 1.47 and 1.51 times as that of C70-1 and MB, respectively. The results indicate that the C70-antenna systems can be used as another structure motif for a heavy atom-free organic triplet photosensitizer.

Abstract
Photochemical stability is one of the most important parameters that determine the usefulness of organic dyes in different applications. This Review addresses key factors that determine the dye photostability. It is shown that photodegradation can follow different oxygen-dependent and oxygen-independent mechanisms and may involve both 1S1-3T1 and higher-energy 1Sn-3Tn excited states. Their involvement and contribution depends on dye structure, medium conditions, irradiation power. Fluorescein, rhodamine, BODIPY and cyanine dyes, as well as conjugated polymers are discussed as selected examples illustrating photobleaching mechanisms. The strategies for modulating and improving the photostability are overviewed. They include the improvement of fluorophore design, particularly by attaching protective and anti-fading groups, creating proper medium conditions in liquid, solid and nanoscale environments. The special conditions for biological labeling, sensing and imaging are outlined.

Abstract
Organic photosensitizers possessing efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) and forming long-living triplet excited states, play a crucial role in a number of applications. A common approach in the design of such dyes relies on the introduction of heavy atoms (e.g. transition metals or halogens) into the structure, which promote ISC via spin-orbit coupling interaction. In recent years, alternative methods to enhance ISC have been actively studied. Among those, the generation of triplet excited states through photoinduced electron transfer (PET) in heavy-atom-free molecules has attracted particular attention because it allows for the development of photosensitizers with programmed triplet state and fluorescence quantum yields. Due to their synthetic accessibility and tunability of optical properties, boron dipyrromethenes (BODIPYs) are so far the most perspective class of photosensitizers operating via this mechanism. This article reviews recently reported heavy-atom-free BODIPY donor-acceptor dyads and dimers which produce long-living triplet excited states and generate singlet oxygen. Structural factors which affect PET and concomitant triplet state formation in these molecules are discussed and the reported data on triplet state yields and singlet oxygen generation quantum yields in various solvents are summarized. Finally, examples of recent applications of these systems are highlighted.

Abstract
A complete photophysical study on the iodinated-BODIPY, 3,5-dimethyl-2,6-diiodo-8-thiomethyl-pyrromethene (MeSBDP), demonstrated that it is an excellent triplet photosensitizer for singlet oxygen production in a broad range of apolar and polar solvents. Besides its absorption and fluorescence emission spectra, the dynamics of its excited states including its intersystem crossing rate was characterized by femtosecond transient experiments. The photophysical study of its triplet state by nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and phosphorescence emission concluded to a diffusion-controlled quenching of 3MeSBDP by O2 and to a fraction of triplet state quenching by O2 close to unity. The high (>0.87) and solvent-insensitive singlet oxygen quantum yield φΔ measured by singlet oxygen phosphorescence emission, together with the noticeable photostability of MeSBSP, as well as the absence of quenching of singlet oxygen by MeSBDP itself, allows claiming it as an alternative standard photosensitizer for singlet oxygen production, under excitation either in the UV or in the visible range.

Abstract
Many biological processes are naturally regulated with spatiotemporal control. In order to perturb and investigate them, optochemical tools have been developed that convey similar spatiotemporal precision. Pivotal to optochemical probes are photolabile protecting groups, so called caging groups, and recent developments have enabled new applications to cellular processes, including cell signaling. This review focuses on the advances made in the field of caging groups and their application in cell signaling through caged molecules such as neurotransmitters, lipids, secondary messengers, and proteins.

Abstract
NIR photosensitizer is attractive for photodynamic therapy (PDT). Low-power light irradiation and imaging-guided PDT makes it possible to increase tissue penetration depth. The pyrrole-substituted iodinated BODIPY (BDPI) molecule was designed and synthesized, and it possesses an intense NIR absorption and emission band, and exhibits a high singlet oxygen quantum yield (ΦΔ = 0.80) which leads remarkable cytotoxicity upon low power illumination (IC50 = 0.60 μg/mL, 6.1 mW/cm2). After being encapsulated with biocompatibility polypeptide PEG-PLys, polymeric micelles nanoparticles (PBDPI NPs) was obtained that are water-dispersed and passively tumor-targetable. Such enhanced accumulation in tumor area makes it easily traced in vivo due to its NIR fluorescence. In addition, such nanoparticles offer an unprecedented photodynamic therapeutic effect by using a low-power irradiation light, which makes it possible to kill cancer cells in deep tissue efficiently.
