Semiconductors Application Forms and Doping Benefits to Wastewater Treatment: A Comparison of TiO2, WO3, and g-C3N4

Photocatalysis has been vastly applied for the removal of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and other micropollutants, with the aim of future water reclamation. As a process based upon photon irradiation, materials that may be activated through natural light sources are highly pursued, to facilitate their application and reduce costs. TiO2 is a reference material, and it has been greatly optimized. However, in its typical configuration, it is known to be mainly active under ultraviolet radiation. Thus, multiple alternative visible light driven (VLD) materials have been intensively studied recently. WO3 and g-C3N4 are currently attractive VLD catalysts, with WO3 possessing similarities with TiO2 as a metal oxide, allowing correlations between the knowledge regarding the reference catalyst, and g-C3N4 having an interesting and distinct non-metallic polymeric structure with the benefit of easy production. In this review, recent developments towards CECs degradation in TiO2 based photocatalysis are discussed, as reference catalyst, alongside the selected alternative materials, WO3 and g-C3N4. The aim here is to evaluate the different techniques more commonly explored to enhance catalyst photo-activity, specifically doping with multiple elements and the formation of composite materials. Moreover, the possible combination of photocatalysis and ozonation is also explored, as a promising route to potentialize their individual efficiencies and overcome typical drawbacks.

Two-dimensional layered carbon-based catalytic ozonation for water purification: Rational design of catalysts and an in-depth understanding of the interfacial reaction mechanism

This review renewed insight into the existing complex and contradictory mechanisms of catalytic ozonation by two-dimensional layered carbon-based materials (2D-LCMs) for degradation toxic refractory organics in aqueous solution. Migration and capture of active electrons are central to catalytic ozonation reactions, which was not studied or reviewed more clearly. Based on this perspective, the catalytic ozonation potential of 2D-LCMs synthesized by numerous methods is firstly contrasted to guide the design of subsequent carbon based-catalysts, and not limited to 2D-LCMs. Matching ROS to active sites is a key step in understanding the catalytic mechanism. The structure-activity relationships between reported numerous active sites and ROS evolution is then constructed. Result showed that OH could be produced by -OH, -C=O, -COOH groups, defective sites, immobilized metal atoms, doped heteroatoms and photo-induced electrons; and O₂^- could be produced by -OH groups and sp²-bonded carbon. The normalized model further be used to visually compare the contribution degree of various regulatory methods to performance improvement. More importantly, this review calls for 2D-LCMs-based catalytic ozonation to be studied without circumventing the issue of structural stability, which would lead to many proposals of catalysts and its involved catalytic reaction mechanism being meaningless.

Recent advances of SBA-15-based composites as the heterogeneous catalysts in water decontamination: A mini-review

As an emerging class of silica-based mesoporous materials with incorporation of active components (e.g., transition metals/metal oxides and nanocarbons), SBA-15-based composites (X@SBA-15) have been attracting increasing attention in the field of water treatment owing to their unique characteristics and excellent remediation performance. This paper reviews recent advances in catalytic applications of X@SBA-15 to remove organic contaminants from water. Emphasis is made on the use of X@SBA-15 in four advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) (i.e., photocatalysis, Fenton-like oxidation, catalytic ozonation, and sulfate radical-based oxidation). Impregnation and hydrothermal methods are two most widely used synthetic approaches to combine the active composites with SBA-15, obtaining a synergistic effect with significant improvement in their individual catalytic activity for pollution remediation. The enhanced generation of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals from the surface of X@SBA-15 was widely recognized as being responsible for water decontamination using these AOPs, while sulfate radicals were also involved during activation of persulfate or peroxymonosulfate. Especially, X@SBA-15 could significantly enhance the light harvest and reduce the recombination of photo-induced electrons and holes during photocatalytic treatment, which also played the critical role in oxidizing the organics. The superior catalytic performance of X@SBA-15 without leaching metal ions during successive runs demonstrated the excellent reusability and structural stability. Together with the reduced toxicity of the treated solutions and the cost-effective characteristics of X@SBA-15 nanohybrids reported in the published literature, their great potential as the efficient and environmentally friendly heterogeneous catalysts in a real use scenario is suggested. Finally, the future perspectives on the development and practical utilization of X@SBA-15 are addressed.

In-situ fabrication of Ag/P-g-C3N4 composites with enhanced photocatalytic activity for sulfamethoxazole degradation

A series of Ag/P-g-C₃N₄ composites with different Ag content were synthesized for the first time by thermal polymerization combined with photo-deposition method. The composites were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscope coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectra, N₂ absorption-desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Ag was successfully dispersed on the surface of P-g-C₃N₄. The photocatalytic performance of P-g-C₃N₄ and Ag/P-g-C₃N₄ was evaluated by degrading sulfamethoxazole (SMX) under visible light irradiation. In the presence of 5% Ag/P-g-C₃N₄, 100% of SMX was degraded within 20 min. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of Ag/P-g-C₃N₄ was attributed to the surface plasmon resonance effect of metallic Ag and Schottky barrier formed on the interface between Ag and P-g-C₃N₄, which could speed up the generation rate of electrons and holes and inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The radical quenching tests indicated that holes and superoxide radicals were the dominant active species involved in SMX degradation. The synthesized materials maintained high catalytic activity after five cycle runs. The concentration and the intermediates during the degradation process were determined by LC-MS/MS, and the tentative degradation pathways of SMX in photocatalytic system were proposed.

Mini Review on the Structure and Properties (Photocatalysis), and Preparation Techniques of Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nano-Based Particle, and Its Applications

Graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is well known as one of the most promising materials for photocatalytic activities, such as CO2 reduction and water splitting, and environmental remediation through the removal of organic pollutants. On the other hand, carbon nitride also pose outstanding properties and extensive application forecasts in the aspect of field emission properties. In this mini review, the novel structure, synthesis and preparation techniques of full-bodied g-C3N4-based composite and films were revealed. This mini review discussed contemporary advancement in the structure, synthesis, and diverse methods used for preparing g-C3N4 nanostructured materials. The present study gives an account of full knowledge of the use of the exceptional structural and properties, and the preparation techniques of graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and its applications.
