Preparation and characterization of bismuth oxychloride/reduced graphene oxide for photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B under white-light light-emitting-diode and sunlight irradiation

Photocatalytic assessed adsorptive removal of tinidazole from aqueous environment using reduced magnetic graphene oxide-bismuth oxychloride and its silver composite

Antibiotics (tinidazole (TNZ)) in wastewater, exhibit adverse effects on humans and ecosystem. The current study was aimed to synthesize photocatalysts mrGO/BiOCl and mrGO/BiOCl/Ag. mrGO was coupled with BiOCl by hydrothermal method and Ag was deposited over it. The synthesized mrGO/BiOCl and mrGO/BiOCl/Ag were confirmed by Pzc analysis (5.5 and 4.4 for mrGO/BiOCl and mrGO/BiOCl/Ag, respectively), surface area analysis (380 m² g^-1, 227.7 m² g^-1, 220 m² g^-1 for mrGO, mrGO/BiOCl and mrGO/BiOCl/Ag respectively), elemental analysis (Ag, O, Bi, Fe), surface morphology (rough ball like sphere of mrGO/BiOCl and cubic Ag nanoparticles in mrGO/BiOCl/Ag), functional groups and band gap (Eg) determination. The Eg was determined using Kubelka-Munk equation as 3.5 and 2.8 eV for mrGO/BiOCl and mrGO/BiOCl/Ag respectively. During the adsorption study, the best experimental conditions for various operating parameters such as pH (2), contact time (5 min for mrGO/BiOCl and 10 min for mrGO/BiOCl/Ag under UV irradiation), TNZ concentration (18 μgL^-1) and catalyst dosage (0.001 g) were achieved. Kinetic study revealed that both composites followed pseudo second order kinetics (R² = 0.9979 and 0.9986, respectively). Data of rGO/BiOCl was fitted to Freundlich adsorption model (R² = 0.9687) and rGO/BiOCl/Ag fitted to Langmuir adsorption model (R² = 0.9994). Moreover, thermodynamic parameters confirmed that a photodegradation phenomenon was spontaneous and exothermic. The results confirmed that rGO/BiOCl and rGO/BiOCl/Ag are appropriate composites for TNZ removal from the aqueous environment with removal efficiency of 97 and 24%, respectively.

Effective fabrication of cellulose nanofibrils supported Pd nanoparticles as a novel nanozyme with peroxidase and oxidase-like activities for efficient dye degradation

Nanozyme-based dye degradation methods are promising for the remediation of water pollution. Though Pd nanoparticles (PdNPs) are known to act as nanozymes, their dye degradation capability has not been investigated. Low nanozyme activities, easy aggregation, difficulties in recovery and reuse are the major challenges in achieving this. For the first time, cellulose nanofibrils-supported PdNPs (PdNPs/PCNF) as a novel nanozyme with good peroxidase and oxidase-mimicking activities and easy recyclability is explored for dye degradation. An efficient and rapid method of PdNPs/PCNF preparation was demonstrated by adjusting the pH and microwave irradiation. Enzyme kinetic studies revealed good kinetic parameters and specific activities of 415 and 277 U/g for peroxidase and oxidase, respectively. PdNPs/PCNF offered 99.64% degradation of methylene blue within 12 min (0.468 min^-1) with 0.4 M H₂O₂ at pH 5.0. Mechanistic studies revealed the involvement of hydroxyl and superoxide radicals. Owing to the network-like structure of PCNF, films and foams were prepared, their dye degradation potentials were compared, and recyclability was tested. Successful degradation of mixed dye solutions and spiked real water samples was achieved and a continuous flow method was demonstrated using a foam-packed column.

Enhanced Visible Light Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue by CdS-ZnS-BiPO4 Nanocomposites Prepared by a Solvent-Assisted Heating Method

In this study, a ternary CdS-ZnS-BiPO4 nanocomposite, synthesized by a solvent-assisted heating method, demonstrated the highest visible light-induced photocatalysis towards the degradation of methylene blue (MB) when comparing with BiPO4, CdS-BiPO4, and ZnS-BiPO4. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS) were used to characterize the prepared nanocomposites. From UV-DRS results, the energy band gap of the prepared BiPO4 structures was 4.51 eV. When CdS nanoparticles were deposited on BiPO4 surface by a solvent-assisted heating method, the prepared nanocomposites exhibited visible light-responsive photocatalytic degradation toward MB (20 ppm). At a molar ratio of Cd to Zn as 1:7, the prepared CdS-ZnS-BiPO4 nanocomposites exhibited the best photocatalytic activity in degrading 95% of MB dyes, out-performing pure BiPO4, CdS-BiPO4, and ZnS-BiPO4 due to its enhanced charge separation efficiency and the lowered carrier recombination from the efficient p-n junction of unprecedented ternary composites. The investigations on mechanism conclude that the major reactive species responsible for MB degradation are holes and oxygen radicals. For practicality, the degradation efficiency for different dyestuff (Fast Green FCF, Rhodamine 6G, Acid Blue 1, methyl orange, and methyl red) degradation in the different water matrix samples (pond water, seawater, and lake water) by the prepared CdS-ZnS-BiPO4 nanocomposites was evaluated.

Visible light photocatalytic bismuth oxide coatings are effective at suppressing aquatic cyanobacteria and degrading free-floating genomic DNA

Access to safe drinking water free from microbial pollution is an issue of global concern. The use of photocatalytic thin films in water treatment has focused on titanium dioxide, which requires UV-activation, proving a potential barrier to upscaling and implementation in the real world. Visible-light-activated photocatalytic thin films, such as bismuth oxide, have recently been shown to have antimicrobial properties. However, more understanding of the photocatalytic effect on the microbial population in water is required. Glass beads coated with bismuth oxide were incubated with either Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena sp. or free-floating genomic DNA. The presence of bismuth oxide-coated glass beads was able to rapidly stop a population of cyanobacteria from increasing. The coated beads were also able to degrade genomic DNA. Leachate from the beads showed no increase in toxicity against human liver cells. This data demonstrates the efficacy of bismuth oxide-coated glass beads for controlling potentially dangerous cyanobacterial populations, whilst potentially reducing the amount of free-floating genomic DNA (an essential issue in the face of antimicrobial resistance) - all of which should be essential considerations in emerging water treatment technologies.

Controlling the structure and photocatalytic properties of three—dimensional aerogels obtained by simultaneous reduction and self-assembly of BiOI/GO aqueous colloidal dispersions

Water pollution affects all living habitats, since it is the most basic element that sustains all life forms and, as an exceptional solvent, it readily makes any compound available for living cells, either nutrients or noxious substances. Elimination of molecular contaminants from water quality is one of the most challenging technical problems that conventional treatments like flocculation and filtration fail short to defeat. Particulate photocatalysts, used to degrade contaminants, have the main drawback of their recovery from the water matrices. The inclusion of photocatalytic nanoparticles (NPs) into a large supporting framework, is presented as an innovative approach aiming to ensure a facile separation from water. To this end, three-dimensional (3D) aerogels with photocatalytic properties were prepared by a simple and scalable method based on the reduction—induced self-assembly of graphene oxide (GO) in the presence of BiOI nanoparticles. With the help of ascorbic acid, as a green reducing agent, partial reduction of GO into reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and self-assembly of both kinds of nanostructures into a porous monolith was achieved. BiOI doped RGO aerogels were further stabilized and morphologically controlled using poly (ethylene glycol) as stabilizer. The photocatalytic performance of these aerogels was evaluated by following the discoloration of methylene blue (MB) solution, under visible light irradiation, showing that structure and dispersion degree of NPs to be fundamental variables. Hence, this methodology is proposed to produce hybrid aerogels with controlled morphology and photocatalytic performance that has the potential to be used in water cleaning procedures.

Bismuth-Graphene Nanohybrids: Synthesis, Reaction Mechanisms, and Photocatalytic Applications—A Review

Photocatalysis is a classical solution to energy conversion and environmental pollution control problems. In photocatalysis, the development and exploration of new visible light catalysts and their synthesis and modification strategies are crucial. It is also essential to understand the mechanism of these reactions in the various reaction media. Recently, bismuth and graphene’s unique geometrical and electronic properties have attracted considerable attention in photocatalysis. This review summarizes bismuth-graphene nanohybrids’ synthetic processes with various design considerations, fundamental mechanisms of action, heterogeneous photocatalysis, benefits, and challenges. Some key applications in energy conversion and environmental pollution control are discussed, such as CO2 reduction, water splitting, pollutant degradation, disinfection, and organic transformations. The detailed perspective of bismuth-graphene nanohybrids’ applications in various research fields presented herein should be of equal interest to academic and industrial scientists.

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Chalcopyrite/Silver Phosphate Composites with Enhanced Degradation of Rhodamine B under Photo-Fenton Process

A new composite by coupling chalcopyrite (CuFeS₂) with silver phosphate (Ag₃PO₄) (CuFeS₂/Ag₃PO₄) was proposed by using a cyclic microwave heating method. The prepared composites were characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Under optimum conditions and 2.5 W irradiation (wavelength length > 420 nm, power density = 0.38 Wcm⁻²), 96% of rhodamine B (RhB) was degraded by CuFeS₂/Ag₃PO₄ within a 1 min photo-Fenton reaction, better than the performance of Ag₃PO₄ (25% degradation within 10 min), CuFeS₂ (87.7% degradation within 1 min), and mechanically mixed CuFeS₂/Ag₃PO₄ catalyst. RhB degradation mainly depended on the amount of hydroxyl radicals generated from the Fenton reaction. The degradation mechanism of CuFeS₂/Ag₃PO₄ from the photo-Fenton reaction was deduced using a free radical trapping experiment, the chemical reaction of coumarin, and photocurrent and luminescence response. The incorporation of CuFeS₂ in Ag₃PO₄ enhanced the charge separation of Ag₃PO₄ and reduced Ag₃PO₄ photocorrosion as the photogenerated electrons on Ag₃PO₄ were transferred to regenerate Cu²⁺/Fe³⁺ ions produced from the Fenton reaction to Cu⁺/Fe²⁺ ions, thus simultaneously maintaining the CuFeS₂ intact. This demonstrates the synergistic effect on material stability. However, hydroxyl radicals were produced by both the photogenerated holes of Ag₃PO₄ and the Fenton reaction of CuFeS₂ as another synergistic effect in catalysis. Notably, the degradation performance and the reusability of CuFeS₂/Ag₃PO₄ were promoted. The practical applications of this new material were demonstrated from the effective performance of CuFeS₂/Ag₃PO₄ composites in degrading various dyestuffs (90–98.9% degradation within 10 min) and dyes in environmental water samples (tap water, river water, pond water, seawater, treated wastewater) through enhanced the Fenton reaction under sunlight irradiation.

Bismuth oxychloride-based materials for the removal of organic pollutants in wastewater

Various kind of organics are toxic and detrimental, resulting in eutrophication, black, odorous water and so on. Photocatalysis has been deemed to be a promising technology which can decompose different kinds of organic pollutants under visible light irradiation, finally achieving non-poisonous, harmless CO2, water and other inorganic materials. Bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) is considered as a promising photocatalyst for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants due to its high chemical stability, unique layered structure, resistance to corrosion and favorable photocatalytic property. However, BiOCl can only absorb UV irradiation because of its wide band gap of 3.2 eV-3.5 eV that limits its photocatalytic performance. Herein, a lot of methods have been reviewed to improve its photocatalytic activity. We introduced the unique and special layered structure of BiOCl, the typical and common synthesis methods that can control the morphology, and the most important part is varies of modification routes of BiOCl and the application of BiOCl-based materials for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. Besides, we summarized the crucial issues and perspectives about the application of BiOCl in pollution management.

Novel Ternary Heterogeneous Reduction Graphene Oxide (RGO)/BiOCl/TiO2 Nanocomposites for Enhanced Adsorption and Visible-Light Induced Photocatalytic Activity toward Organic Contaminants

Herein, we describe a simple and cost-effective design for the fabrication of a novel ternary RGO/BiOCl/TiO₂ nanocomposites through a simple hydrothermal process. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS) and N₂ adsorption–desorption analysis. Organic contaminants—such as methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), rhodamine B (RhB) and amido black-10B (AB-10B)—were employed as the target pollutants to evaluate the adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity of RGO/BiOCl/TiO₂ nanocomposites. From experimental data, it was also found that the amount of TiO₂ impressed the photocatalytic performance, and the nanocomposites with 10% of TiO₂ showed the best photocatalytic activity. The improved photocatalytic performance may be mainly due to the narrow band gap, and the charge separation and migration of RGO. Moreover, good recyclability was obtained from RGO/BiOCl/TiO₂ nanocomposites, and scavenger tests indicated that photogenerated holes were the main active species in the reaction system. Therefore, the prepared RGO/BiOCl/TiO₂ nanocomposites have broad applications foreground in pollutants purification.
