Quantum size effect and visible light activity of anatase nanosheet quantum dots

Advances in selenium from materials to applications

Over the past few decades, single-element semiconductors have received a great deal of attention due to their unique light-sensitive and heat-sensitive properties, which are of great application and research significance. As one promising material, selenium, being a typical semiconductor, has attracted significant attention from researchers due to its unique properties including high optical conductivity, anisotropic, thermal conductivity, and so on. To promote the application of selenium nanomaterials in various fields, numerous studies over the past few decades have successfully synthesized selenium nanomaterials in various morphologies using a wide range of physical and chemical methods. In this paper, we review and summarise the different methods of synthesis of various morphologies of selenium nanomaterials and discuss the applications of different nanostructures of selenium nanomaterials in optoelectronic devices, chemical sensors, and biomedical applications. Finally, we discuss possible challenges for selenium nanodevices and provide an outlook on the future applications of selenium nanomaterials.

In situ creation of ZnO@CdS nanoflowers on ITO electrodes for sensitive photoelectrochemical detection of copper ions in blood

A highly selective and sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) detection method has been developed for the analysis of copper (Cu2+) ions using nanoflower-like ZnO@CdS heterojunctions, of which ZnO was first in situ grown onto the indium tin oxide electrodes by a hydrothermal method and then coated with CdS through the chemical bath deposition route. It was discovered that the ZnO@CdS heterojunction so formed could serve as a photosensitive catalyst with improved charge separation for visible-light-driven PEC responses. Enhanced visible-light harvesting of nanocomposites could also be expected with CdS as the visible-light sensitizer. Furthermore, the introduction of Cu2+ ions could cause a rational decrease in the photocurrents of nanocomposites through the specific interaction between CdS and Cu2+ ions. A ZnO@CdS heterojunction-based PEC sensor was thereby developed for the detection of Cu2+ ions in blood in the linear concentrations ranging from 0.50 to 80 nM, with a limit of detection of 0.18 nM. Such a heterojunction-based PEC detection platform constructed using two photocatalytic materials with matched band structures are promising for a wide range of applications for sensing Cu2+ ions in clinical diagnostics, food monitoring, and environmental analysis.

Recent Advancements in the Understanding of the Surface Chemistry in TiO2 Photocatalysis

Surface chemistry plays a major role in photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical processes taking place with the participation of TiO2. The synthesis methods, surface characterizations, theoretical research methods, and hardware over the last decade generated opportunities for progress in the surface science of this photocatalyst. Very recently, attention was paid to the design of photocatalysts at the nanoscale level by adjusting the types of exposed surfaces and their ratio, the composition and the surface structure of nanoparticles, and that of individual surfaces. The current theoretical methods provide highly detailed designs that can be embodied experimentally. The present review article describes the progress in the surface science of TiO2 and TiO2-based photocatalysts obtained over the last three years. Such aspects including the properties of macro- and nano-scale surfaces, noble-metal-loaded surfaces, doping with Mg and S, intrinsic defects (oxygen vacancies), adsorption, and photoreactions are considered. The main focus of the article is on the anatase phase of TiO2.

Synthesis of Fe- and Co-Doped TiO2 with Improved Photocatalytic Activity Under Visible Irradiation Toward Carbamazepine Degradation

Pure TiO₂ and Fe- and Co-doped TiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) as photocatalysts were synthesized using wet chemical methods (sol-gel + precipitation). Their crystalline structure and optical properties were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible light (UV-Vis) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized nanoparticles was evaluated through degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) under UV-A and visible-light irradiations. The XRD and Raman analyses revealed that all synthesized nanomaterials showed only the anatase phase. The DRS results showed that the absorption edge was blue-shifted for Fe-doped TiO₂ NPs. The decrease in charge recombination was evidenced from the PL investigation for both Co-doped and Fe-doped TiO₂ nanomaterials. An enhancement in photocatalytic degradation of carbamazepine in aqueous suspension under both UV-A light and visible-light irradiations was observed for Fe-doped Titania NPs by comparison with pure TiO₂. These results suggest that the doping cations could suppress the electron/hole recombination. Therefore, the photocatalytic activity of TiO₂-based nanomaterials was enhanced.
