Recent advances in g-C3N4-based photo-enzyme catalysts for degrading organic pollutants

In recent years, photocatalytic reactions have shown great potential in degrading organic pollutants because of their simple operation and no secondary pollution. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) is one of the most frequently used photocatalyst materials in the field of photocatalysis because it is a form of photocatalytic material with facile synthesis, no metal, visible light response, and strong stability. Enzyme-catalyzed degradation has received extensive attention due to its broad selectivity, high efficiency, and environmental friendliness. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP), one of several oxidoreductases utilized for pollutant degradation, has a wide range of applications due to its mild reaction conditions and high stability. Exploring efficient platforms for immobilizing g-C₃N₄ and HRP to develop photo-enzyme-coupled catalysis is an attractive practical topic. The coupling effect of g-C₃N₄ and HRP improves the carrier separation efficiency and generates more active species, which finally realize the solar-driven non-selective destruction of organic pollutants. We describe the alteration of g-C₃N₄ and the immobilization of HRP in detail in this study, and we outline recent developments in the photo-enzyme coupling of g-C₃N₄ and HRP.

Construction of Spindle-Shaped Ti3+ Self-Doped TiO2 Photocatalysts Using Triethanolamine-Aqueous as the Medium and Its Photoelectrochemical Properties

To enhance the utilization efficiency of visible light and reduce the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, spindle-shaped TiO2 photocatalysts with different Ti3+ concentrations were fabricated by a simple solvothermal strategy using low-cost, environmentally friendly TiH2 and H2O2 as raw materials and triethanolamine-aqueous as the medium. The photocatalytic activities of the obtained photocatalysts were investigated in the presence of visible light. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra were applied to characterize the structure, morphologies, and chemical compositions of as-fabricated Ti3+ self-doped TiO2. The concentration of triethanolamine in the mixed solvent plays a significant role on the crystallinity, morphologies, and photocatalytic activities. The electron–hole separation efficiency was found to increase with the increase in the aspect ratio of as-fabricated Ti3+ self-doped TiO2, which was proved by transient photocurrent response and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Fabrication of black TiO2-x /NiFe2O4 supported on diatomaceous earth with enhanced sonocatalytic activity for ibuprofen mitigation

This study reports a facile fabrication of black TiO_2-x /NiFe₂O₄ (Ti³⁺ self-doped titania coupled with nickel ferrite), an efficient sonocatalyst for ibuprofen (IBP) mitigation. Compared with TiO_2-x or NiFe₂O₄, TiO_2-x /NiFe₂O₄ heterojunction displayed higher sonocatalytic activity, and their immobilization onto diatomaceous earth further enhanced mitigation efficiency due to the synergy between adsorption and sonocatalysis. About 96.7% of 10 mg l^-1 IBP was removed in 100 min using 0.7 g l^-1 catalyst at pH = 6, with the ultrasonic power of 144 W and frequency of 60 KHz. Quenching experiment results demonstrated the roles of reactive species. The intermediates during IBP sono-oxidation were determined by HPLC-MS method, and the acute toxicity was evaluated. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism was proposed. The sonocatalyst revealed excellent reusability, suggesting itself promising for wastewater treatment.

Modified Nano-TiO2 Based Composites for Environmental Photocatalytic Applications

TiO2 probably plays the most important role in photocatalysis due to its excellent chemical and physical properties. However, the band gap of TiO2 corresponds to the Ultraviolet (UV) region, which is inactive under visible irradiation. At present, TiO2 has become activated in the visible light region by metal and nonmetal doping and the fabrication of composites. Recently, nano-TiO2 has attracted much attention due to its characteristics of larger specific surface area and more exposed surface active sites. nano-TiO2 has been obtained in many morphologies such as ultrathin nanosheets, nanotubes, and hollow nanospheres. This work focuses on the application of nano-TiO2 in efficient environmental photocatalysis such as hydrogen production, dye degradation, CO2 degradation, and nitrogen fixation, and discusses the methods to improve the activity of nano-TiO2 in the future.
