Photochromism of salicylideneanilines bearing super bulky substituents: Single-crystal UV-vis spectroscopic examination of bleaching under variable temperature and visible-light irradiation

Surprising Solid-State ESIPT Emission from Apparently Ordinary Salicyliden Glycinates Schiff Bases

Excited-State Intramolecular Photon Transfer (ESIPT) is known for the geometry-related phenolic and imine groups. The Schiff bases formed upon condensation of salicyl aldehyde and glycine led to the formation of ESIPT models. A series of alkali metal salicyliden glycinates were analyzed by X-ray diffraction of their monocrystals and spectroscopy measurements. The X-ray analysis revealed varied hydration levels between the salts. They adapted trans geometry on the imine groups and mostly anticlinal conformation with the neighboring atoms, which is different from the other structurally-related compounds in literature. Fluorescence of these compounds was found for the crystalline forms only. Protonation of the imine nitrogen atom and further proton distribution was consistent with the ESIPT theory, which also explained the observed fluorescence with the highest Stokes shift of 10,181 cm^-1 and 10.1% of fluorescence quantum yield for the sodium salt.

Spectroscopic Tracking of Salicylideneaniline Photocolored Crystals: An Attempt to Quantify Polymorph-Dependent Features toward Precise Structure-Function Correlation Analysis

Three polymorphs of salicylideneaniline (SA) were prepared, and their photochromic behavior was examined using a recently developed single-crystal microscopic UV-vis spectroscopy approach. This system enabled us to acquire absorption data during the bleaching process as a function of temperature and visible light intensity. First, we demonstrated that, in contrast to the generally accepted assumption, the bleaching curves were notably influenced by the degree of photosaturation at the initial stage. By modifying our kinetic model to include the term representing the initial degree of photosaturation, we successfully obtained the kinetic parameters intrinsic to each crystal structure. Second, we further analyzed the kinetic parameters to show that the bleaching process was accelerated by visible light irradiation to a significantly higher degree than by thermal relaxation. The two bleaching-prompting effects were quantitatively compared between two photochromic polymorphs, α₁ and α₂; the long life of the photoproduct in α₂ was attributed to efficient self-shielding from visible light irradiation enabled by its structural features. These results prompted us to reexamine the simple dualistic photochemical and thermal classification of photochromic systems and will provide a foundation for the precise structure-function analysis of crystalline materials, including SAs.

Selected solid-state behaviour of three di-tert-butyl-substituted N-salicylideneaniline derivatives: temperature-induced phase transitions and chromic behaviour

The synthesis, single-crystal structures and chromic behaviour of three related Schiff bases, namely, (E)-2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-{[(4-fluorophenyl)imino]methyl}phenol, C21H26FNO, 1, (E)-2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-{[(4-chlorophenyl)imino]methyl}phenol, C21H26ClNO, 2, and (E)-6-{[(4-bromophenyl)imino]methyl}-2,4-di-tert-butylphenol, C21H26BrNO, 3, are reported. Two polymorphs of 1 were obtained, which were found to have different photochromic properties. Schiff bases 2 and 3 were found to be isostructural and underwent a phase transition upon cooling which was attributed to the dynamic disorder in one of the tert-butyl groups resolving at low temperature. All of the structures were found to exist in the enol rather than the keto form based on the C-O(H) and imine C=N bond lengths, and contained an intramolecular O-H...N hydrogen bond alongside weaker intermolecular C-H...O contacts.

Reversible Vapochromic Luminescence Accompanied by Planar Half-Chair Conformational Change of a Propeller-Shaped Boron β-Diketiminate Complex

Leakage of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is one of the most severe industrial problems, because it can cause environmental pollution, global warming, fire, and explosion. Hence, the visualization of leakage is an essential technology to detect it at an early stage. Molecular crystals, fluorescence color of which can be changed by the exposure to VOCs could potentially serve as the sensing materials for realizing rapid and facile VOC detection. However, these materials usually require harsh conditions, such as heating or a vacuum, to recover their initial phases for reuse. Therefore, it remains a challenge to obtain completely reversible sensing systems without such energy-consuming recycling processes. Herein, the reversible color change of fluorescence from the crystals of a propeller-shaped boron β-diketiminate complex is reported. The complex was crystallized in distinct crystalline phases having different luminescent colors. Importantly, these phases were interconverted very rapidly (time constant <60 s) and repeatedly upon exposure to the vapors of the appropriate VOCs. The small energy differences between conformers of the complex could lead to this pseudopolymorphic behavior. This finding could be applied for the development of further eco-friendly reversible sensing materials based on four-coordinated boron complexes.

Ratchet-like mechanism in a long-life photoproduct of salicylideneaniline enclathrated in a pillared-layer guanidinium disulfonate structure

Salicylideneaniline (SA) was found to exhibit extraordinary long-life photochromism upon being included in a cavity of guanidinium organosulfonate and exhibited a lifetime of ∼30 times that of a pure SA crystal. Crystal structure analysis suggested that the sulfonate molecule in the apo-host provided a flexible cavity space that kinetically trapped SA in its photo-isomerized form, as if it was locked by a ratchet-like mechanism.

A certain molecular environment in a hydrogen-bonded framework may extremely prolong the lifetime of photo-induced, colored species.

Seed-triggered solid-to-solid transformation between color polymorphs: striking differences between quasi-isomorphous crystals of dichloro-substituted salicylideneaniline regioisomers

The title compound exhibited two color polymorphs, of which the yellow form transformed to the orange form during heating, and this peculiar phase transition behavior was explained in relation to the pseudo-symmetry of its molecular structure.
