A benzimidazole derivative based LMCT sensor for the detection of Cu2+ in DMSO/H2O (2:3 v/v) solution and its application in implication logic gates

Architecture of Easy-to-Synthesize and Superior Probe Based on Aminoquinoline Appended Naphthoquinone: Instant and On-Site Cu2+ Ion Quantification in Real Samples and Unusual Crystal Structure and Logic Gate Operations

Easy-to-synthesize aminoquinoline (AQ) appended naphthoquinone (NQ)-based colorimetric and ratiometric probe (AQNQ) was successfully synthesized in one step with high yield and low cost, and was utilized to supply an effective solution to critical shortcomings encountered in Cu2+ analysis. The structure of AQNQ and its interaction with Cu2+ forming an unusual AQNQ-Cu complex were enlightened with single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and different spectroscopic methods. AQNQ-Cu complex is the first Cu2+ containing dinuclear crystal where the octahedral coordination sphere is fulfilled through the coordination of a NQ oxygen atom. AQNQ exhibited long-term stability (more than 1 month), superior probe ability toward Cu2+ with quite fast response (30 s), high selectivity among many ions, and limit of detection of 12.13 ppb that is significantly below the highest amount of Cu2+ allowed in drinking water established by both WHO and EPA. Ratiometric determination of Cu2+ using AQNQ was performed with high recovery and low RSD values for drinking water, tap water, lake water, cherry, and watermelon samples. Colorimetric on-site determination including smartphone and paper strip applications, IMPLICATION, and INHIBIT logic gate applications were successfully carried out. The reversibility and reusability of the response to Cu2+ ions with the paper strip application were examined for the first time.

Method for highly selective, ultrasensitive fluorimetric detection of Cu2+ and Al3+ by Schiff bases containing o-phenylenediamine and o-aminophenol

Schiff base probes (1 and 2) made from o-phenylenediamine and o-aminophenol were appeared as highly selective fluorimetric chemosensor of Cu²⁺ and Al³⁺ ions respectively. Strong fluorescence emission of probe 1 at 415 nm (excitation at 350 nm) was instantly turned off on addition of Cu²⁺. Very weak fluorescence of probe 2 at 506 nm (excitation at 400 nm) was immediately turned on specifically by Al³⁺. Job's plot and ESI-MS results suggested 1:1 molar stoichiometric ratio of metal ion and probe in their respective complexes. Probe 1 and 2 had demonstrated very low detection limit (9.9 and 2.5 nM respectively). Binding of Cu²⁺ with probe 1 was found chemically reversible on addition of EDTA, while complexation between Al³⁺ and probe 2 was not reversible. On the basis of density functional theory (DFT) and spectroscopic results, probable mode of sensing of the metal ions by the probes were proposed. Quenching of the fluorescence of probe 1 by Cu²⁺ was attributed to the extensive transfer of charge from the probe molecule to paramagnetic copper ion. Whereas, in the Al³⁺-complex of probe 2, photo-induced electron transfer (PET) process from the imine nitrogen to salicylaldehyde moiety was restricted and thereby the weak emission intensity of probe 2 was enhanced significantly. Effective pH range of sensing the metal ions by probe 1 and 2 were 4 to 8 and 6 to 10 respectively. Probe 1 was also applied in the design of a logic gate for Cu²⁺ detection. Moreover, probe 1 and 2 was also used in water sample analysis for quantitative estimation of Cu²⁺ and Al³⁺ respectively.

Development in Fluorescent OFF-ON Probes Based on Cu2+ Promoted Hydrolysis Reaction of the Picolinate Moiety

Anions and cations have a key role in our normal life. Cu²⁺ ion is a crucial trace element accountable for the part of several cellular enzymes and proteins, including cytochrome c oxidase, dopamine monooxygenase, Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase, and ceruloplasmin. WHO has found the extreme acceptable level of Cu²⁺ ions in drinking water is up to 2.0 ppm. Excess use of Cu²⁺ ions is associated with various human genetic disorders. Thus, the visualization of Cu²⁺ ions to avoid its toxic effects in chemical and biological systems is significant. In this review we have summarized sensors based on catalytic hydrolysis of picolinate to detect Cu²⁺ ions. The sensors based on hydrolysis of picolinate are very selective as compared to the other sensors for Cu²⁺ ions detection. We have focused on describing the structure, spectral properties, detection limits, and bioimaging model of the sensors.

Novel selective "on-off" fluorescence sensor based on julolidine hydrazone-Al3+ complex for Cu2+ ion: DFT study

A hydrazone (T1) was synthesized by reacting 8-hydroxyjulolidine-9-carboxaldehyde with 2-furoic hydrazide and then modified with Al³⁺ ion to form a novel hydrazone Al³⁺ complex (T1-Al³⁺) in an aqueous solution (8% propylene glycol in 10 mM HEPES pH 5.5). The T1-Al³⁺ complex was studied as a Cu²⁺ selective sensor due to its highly efficient capacibility of paramagnetic quenching. The results showed that the T1-Al³⁺ complexed sensor possesses remarkable sensitivity and selectivity for Cu²⁺ ion in 8% propylene glycol in 10 mM HEPES pH 5.5 as compared with other tested analytes. Notably, this sensor has a broad linear detection range of 10-110 µM for Cu²⁺ ion and a detection limit level of 0.62 µM, which is lower than the Cu²⁺ concentration threshold in drinking water designated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Additionally, it was detectable for the presence of Cu²⁺ ion in mineral water and tap water samples. The selectivity of T1-Al³⁺ complexed sensor with Cu²⁺ ion could be explained by the basis of computation with Gaussian software complied with the basis sets of B3LYP/6-31 G(d,p)/LANL2DZ. Furthermore, only T1 exhibited anticancer efficacy against HeLa and U251 cells with MTT assay.

An effective long-wavelength fluorescent sensor for Cu2+ based on dibenzylidenehydrazine-bridged biphenylacrylonitrile

Although numerous fluorescence sensors for Cu²⁺ have been presented, a long-wavelength sensor in aqueous media has rarely been reported as expected due to practical application requirements. In this work, a novel AIE molecule (DHBB) containing two biphenylacrylonitrile units bridged by dibenzylidenehydrazine was prepared. It possessed the merits of long-wavelength emission, good emission in aqueous media, and multiple functional groups for binding Cu²⁺. It exhibited good sensing selectivity for Cu²⁺ among all kinds of tested metal ions. The detection limit was as low as 1.08 × 10^-7 M. The sensing mechanism was clarified as 1:1 stoichiometric ratio based on the binding cooperation of O and N functional groups of DHBB. The selective sensing ability for Cu²⁺ remained stable at pH = 5-9 and was influenced little by other metal ions. The Cu²⁺ sensing ability of DHBB was applied in real samples with 96% recovery rate. The bio-imaging experiment of living cells suggested that DHBB possessed not only good bio-imaging performance but also sensing ability for Cu²⁺ in living environments. This work suggested the good application prospect of DHBB to sense Cu²⁺ in real samples and living environment.
