Hybrid nanostructures exhibiting both photocatalytic and antibacterial activity-a review

The most vital issues of the modern world for a sustainable future are "health" and "the environment." Scientific endeavors to tackle these two major concerns for mankind need serious attention. The photocatalytic activity toward curbing environmental pollution and antibacterial performance toward a healthy society are two directions that have been emphasized for decades. Recently, materials engineering, in their nanodimension, has shown tremendous possibilities to integrate these functionalities within the same materials. In particular, hybrid nanostructures have shown magnificent prospects to combat both crucial challenges. Many researchers are separately engaged in this important field of research but the collective knowledge on this domain which can facilitate them to excel is badly missing. The present article integrates the development of different hybrid nanostructures which exhibit both photocatalytic degradations of environmental pollutants and antibacterial efficiency. Various synthesis techniques of those hybrid nanomaterials have been discussed. Hybrid nanosystems based on several successful materials have been categorically discussed for better insight into the research advancement in this direction. In particular, Ag-based, metal oxides-based, layered carbon material-based, and Mexene- and self-cleaning-based materials have been chosen for detailing their performance as anti-pollutant and antibacterial materials. Those hybrid systems along with some miscellaneous booming nanostructured materials have been discussed comprehensively with their success and limitations toward their bifunctionality as antipollutant and antibacterial agents.

Diverse Antibacterial Treatments beyond Antibiotics for Diabetic Foot Ulcer Therapy

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU), a common complication of diabetes, has become a great burden to both patients and the society. The delayed wound closure of ulcer sites resulting from vascular damage and neutrophil dysfunction facilitates bacterial infection. Once drug resistance occurs or bacterial biofilm is formed, conventional therapy tends to fail and amputation is unavoidable. Therefore, effective antibacterial treatment beyond antibiotics is of utmost importance to accelerate the wound healing process and prevent amputation. Considering the complexity of multidrug resistance, biofilm formation, and special microenvironments (such as hyperglycemia, hypoxia, and abnormal pH value) at the infected site of DFU, several antibacterial agents and different mechanisms have been explored to achieve the desired outcome. The present review focuses on the recent progress of antibacterial treatments, including metal-based medications, natural and synthesized antimicrobial peptides, antibacterial polymers, and sensitizer-based therapy. This review provides a valuable reference for the innovation of antibacterial material design for DFU therapy.

Ag2O-adorned ZnO nanostructures: cooperative and sustainable nanomaterial system for effective reduction and mineralization of hazardous water pollutants

Organic water pollutants like nitroaromatics and synthetic dyes are causing serious threats to water. Ever-growing urban and industrial activities along with population explosion are rapidly contributing severe level of water contamination. Semiconducting nanomaterial-based photocatalysis has been proven to be an effective process for degradation of organic water pollutants. In the current study, visible light active Ag₂O-adorned ZnO nanostructures were fabricated by a simple two-step hydrothermal method and the prepared nanostructures were utilized for the photocatalytic mineralization of rhodamine B (RhB) dye with visible light radiation. The catalytic potential of as-synthesized nanostructures was also investigated for the reduction of nitroaromatics (4-NP and 4-NA) and RhB dye in the presence of NaBH₄. The Ag₂O-adorned ZnO nanostructures prepared with 5% of silver nitrate denoted as ZnO/Ag₂O (5%) demonstrated stupendous photomineralization activity against RhB dye as almost 100% degradation of RhB dye was achieved within 100 min of reaction time at pH = 6. The kinetic study revealed that the degradation reaction followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics and the kinetic rate constant (k) of photodecolorization reaction for optimal catalyst was calculated to be 61.4 × 10^-3 min^-1. The nanostructures revealed excellent recyclability and photostability as 95% activity of the catalyst was preserved even after the fifth cyclic run. The catalytic reduction of the 4-NP, 4-NA, and RhB dye was completed in 21, 12, and 40 min, respectively, in the presence of ZnO/Ag₂O (5%) and NaBH₄ solution. The kinetic rate constant values for the reduction reactions were determined to be 229.6 × 10^-3, 454.2 × 10^-3, and 105.5 × 10^-3 min^-1 for 4-NP, 4-NA, and RhB dye, respectively. Thus, the obtained results suggest that the components of the prepared nanosystem help in mutually strengthening the catalytic and photocatalytic abilities of each other, indicating the development of a cooperative and sustainable nanomaterial system in the current study.

Effect of Varying AgNO3 and CS(NH2)2 Concentrations on Performance of Ag2S/ZnO NRs/ITO Photoanode

This research focuses on improving the photoelectrochemical performance of binary heterostructure Ag2S/ZnO NRs/ITO by manipulating synthesis conditions, particularly the concentrations of sliver nitrate AgNO3 and thiourea CS(NH2)2. The photoelectrochemical performance of Ag2S/ZnO nanorods on indium tin oxide (ITO) nanocomposite was compared to pristine ZnO NRs/ITO photoanode. The hydrothermal technique, an eco-friendly, low-cost method, was used to successfully produce Ag2S/ZnO NRs at different concentrations of AgNO3 and CS(NH2)2. The obtained thin films were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), and photoelectrochemical studies (PECs). We observed that there was an enhancement in absorbance in the visible region and effective photoelectron transfer between the Ag2S/ZnO NRs/ITO photoelectrode and the electrolyte Red-Ox when illuminated with 100 mW cm−2. Increasing the concentration of AgNO3 caused a remarkable decrease in the optical bandgap energy (Eg) values. However, we noticed that there was an unstable trend in Eg when the concentration of CS(NH2)2 was adjusted. The photoelectrochemical studies revealed that at a bias of 1.0 V, and 0.005 M of AgNO3 and 0.03 M of CS(NH2)2, the maximum photocurrent of the Ag2S/ZnO NRs/ITO photoanode was 3.97 mA/cm2, which is almost 11 times that of plain ZnO nanorods. Based on the outcomes of this investigating, the Ag2S/ZnO NRs/ITO photoanode is proposed as a viable alternative photoanode in photoelectrochemical applications.

Fabrication of a novel ternary heterojunction composite Ag2MoO4/Ag2S/MoS2 with significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance

A novel ternary heterojunction Ag₂MoO₄/Ag₂S/MoS₂ was successfully fabricated via a facile two-step method. The prepared ternary heterojunction showed much enhanced catalytic activity compared with monomers and binary heterojunctions.

Facile Synthesis of Mesoporous Ag2O-ZnO Heterojunctions for Efficient Promotion of Visible Light Photodegradation of Tetracycline

Fabrication of 3D mesoporous Ag₂O-ZnO heterojunctions at varying Ag₂O contents has been achieved through poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(propylene glycol)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (Pluronic F-108) as the structure-directing agent for the first time. The mesoporous Ag₂O-ZnO nanocomposites exhibited a mesoporous structure, which revealed a large pore volume and high surface area. The photocatalytic efficiency over mesoporous Ag₂O-ZnO nanocomposites for tetracycline (TC) compared with that over commercial P-25 and pristine ZnO NPs through the visible light exposure was studied. Mesoporous 1.5% Ag₂O-ZnO nanocomposites indicated the highest degradation efficiency of 100% of TC during 120 min of the visible light exposure compared with 5% and 10% for pristine ZnO NPs and commercial P-25, respectively. The TC degradation rate took place much rapidly over 1.5% Ag₂O-ZnO nanocomposites (0.798 μmol L^-1 min^-1) as compared to either commercial P-25 (0.097 μmol L^-1 min^-1) or ZnO NPs (0.035 μmol L^-1 min^-1). The mesoporous 1.5% Ag₂O-ZnO nanocomposite revealed the highest degradation rate among all synthesized samples, and it was 23 and 8 orders of magnitudes greater than those of pristine ZnO NPs and P-25, respectively. The photoluminescence and transient photocurrent intensity behaviors have been discussed to explore photocatalysis mechanisms. It is anticipated that the present work will contribute some suggestions for understanding other heterojunctions with outstanding behaviors.
