Abstract
In this work, we focused on synthesizing a new fluorescent probe HBA based on caffeic acid for detecting Al3+/HPO42- by the mode of "off-on-off". HBA alone exhibited a weak fluorescence emission in aqueous solution. When Al3+ was added into the HBA solution, a significant green fluorescence was found at 498 nm. However, the introduction of HPO42- to the solution of [HBA-Al3+] complex induced the disappearance of green fluorescence. The detection limit of HBA was calculated as low as 41.7 nM for Al3+ and 62.1 nM for HPO42-, respectively. Probe HBA exhibited good cell-membrane penetrability and had the potential to trace Al3+/HPO42- in biological systems.

Abstract
In this study, a novel dual-function probe BMP based on benzothiazole was easily synthesized and characterized through common optical technique. In the system consisting of DMF/H2O (v/v, 2/3), probe BMP showed azure and blue-green to Al3+ and Ga3+, respectively. Besides, the binding ratios of BMP to Al3+ and Ga3+ were determined as 1:1, which confirmed by Job's plot. Furthermore, for Al3+ and Ga3+, the limit of detection (LOD) was determined to be 1.51 × 10-6 M and 4.28 × 10-6 M, respectively. Moreover, it was worth noting that BMP showed good performances in paper colorimetry, cell phone colorimetric identification and cell imaging.

Abstract
Two rhodamine and azo based chemosensors (HL1 = (3',6'-bis(ethylamino)-2-((2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-5-(phenyldiazenyl)benzylidene)amino)-2',7'-dimethylspiro[isoindoline-1,9'-xanthen]-3-one) and HL2 = (3',6'-bis(ethylamino)-2-(((2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-5-(p-tolyldiazenyl)benzylidene)amino)-2',7'-dimethylspiro[isoindoline-1,9'-xanthen]-3-one) have been synthesized for colorimetric and fluorometric detection of three trivalent metal ions, Al3+, Cr3+ and Fe3+. The chemosensors have been thoroughly characterized by different spectroscopic techniques and X-ray crystallography. They are non-fluorescent due to the presence of a spirolactam ring. The trivalent metal ions initiate an opening of the spirolactam ring when excited at 490 nm in Britton-Robinson buffer solution (H2O/MeOH 1 : 9 v/v; pH 7.4). The opening of the spirolactam ring increases conjugation within the probe, which is supported by an intense fluorescent pinkish-yellow colouration and an enhancement of the fluorescence intensity of the chemosensors by ∼400 times in the presence of Al3+ and Cr3+ ions and by ∼100 times in the presence of Fe3+ ions. Such a type of enormous fluorescence enhancement is rarely observed in other chemosensors for the detection of trivalent metal ions. A 2 : 1 binding stoichiometry of the probes with the respective ions has been confirmed by Job's plot analysis. Elucidation of the crystal structures of the Al3+ bound chemosensors (1 and 4) also justifies the 2 : 1 binding stoichiometry and the presence of an open spirolactam ring within the chemosensor framework. The limit of detection (LOD) values for both the chemosensors towards the respective metal ions are in the order of ∼10-9 M which supports their application in the biological field. The biocompatibility of the ligands has been studied with the help of the MTT assay. The results show that no significant toxicity was observed up to 100 μM of chemosensor concentration. The capability of our synthesized chemosensors to detect intracellular Al3+, Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions in the cervical cancer cell line HeLa was evaluated with the aid of fluorescence imaging.

Abstract
A fluorescent probe 1 based on julolidine-chalcone derivative, which can specifically recognize aluminum ion with high selectivity and anti-interference, was developed. Probe 1 has good fluorescence stability and can detect Al3+ with turn-on fluorescence in a wide pH range of 4.0-9.0. The probe has good repeatability for the detection of Al3+ and fluorescence turn-on and off can be repeated with the alternate Al3+ and EDTA. The sensing mechanism is speculated that Al3+ will coordinate with hydroxyl oxygen and carbonyl oxygen on the probe through in situ 1H NMR and HRMS combing with Job's plot. The probe can also detect Al3+ in actual water samples and applied to monitor Al3+ in biological system.

Abstract
An easy prepared probe, BHMMP, was designed and synthesized, which displayed a significant fluorescence enhancement (over 38-fold) and obvious color change in the recognition of Al3+. The binding ratio of probe BHMMP to Al3+ was determined as 1:1, according to Job plot. The binding mechanism was fully clarified by the experiments, such as FT-IR spectrum, ESI-MS analysis, and 1H NMR titration. A DFT study further confirmed the binding mode of BHMMP to Al3+. The limit of detection (LOD) for Al3+ was determined as low as 0.70 µM, based on the fluorescence titration of BHMMP. Moreover, the results from real sample experiments, including real water samples, test papers, and cell images, well-demonstrated that BHMMP was capable of sensing Al3+ in environmental and biological systems.

Abstract
A simple hydrazone probe (1) was designed and synthesized for the successive detection of Al3+ and pyrophosphate (PPi) in almost 100% buffer environment. The probe provided O2N donor set for chelation with Al3+, leading to a distinct fluorescence boost at 510 nm. The in-situ formed 1-Al3+ complex detected PPi with an "on-off" behavior. The detection limits for Al3+ and PPi were 35.7 nM and 76 nM, respectively. Benefiting from the existence of morpholine as lysosome-targeting group, probe 1 was successfully applied to the detection of Al3+ and PPi in lysosomes.

Abstract
A novel purine Schiff base fluorescent probe (WYW), (E)-4-methyl-2-((2-(9-(naphthalen-1-yl)-8-(thiophen-2-yl)-9H-purin-6-yl)hydrazono)methyl)phenol, was designed and prepared as an excellent reversible fluorescent chemosensor for monitoring Al3+. The fluorogenic "turn-on" sensor WYW exhibited high selectivity towards Al3+ over other coexistent metal ions, accompanying with an obvious visual color change in DMSO/H2O (9/1, v/v, pH = 7.4) media. The enhancement fluorescence of WYW could be attributed to the inhibition of PET and ESIPT process induced by Al3+. Notably, the WYW-Al3+ complex exhibited a fluorescence "turn-off" response towards F- with exceptional selectivity via the displacement approach. The detection limit of WYW for Al3+ was calculated to be as low as 82 nM. The formation of complex WYW-Al3+ (1:1 stoichiometry) was confirmed by Job's methods and further verified by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, the probe WYW with low cytotoxicity and excellent membrane-permeable property has also been successfully applied for detecting low concertation Al3+ in living HeLa cells.
