The main role of CuO loading against electron-hole recombination of SrTiO3: Improvement and investigation of photocatalytic activity, modeling and optimization by response surface methodology

Cellulose nanofibril/titanate nanofiber modified with CdS quantum dots hydrogel with 3D porous structure: A stable photocatalytic adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal

A novel cellulose nanofibril/titanate nanofiber modified with CdS quantum dots hydrogel (CTH) was synthesized as an effective, stable, and recyclable photocatalytic adsorbent using cellulose nanofibril (CN), titanate nanofiber (TN), and CdS quantum dots. Within the CTH structure, CN formed an essential framework, creating a three-dimensional (3D) porous structure that enhanced the specific surface area and provided abundant adsorption sites for Cr(VI). Simultaneously, TN modified with CdS quantum dots (TN-CdS) served as a nanoscale Z-type photocatalyst, facilitating the efficient separation of photoinduced electrons and holes, further increasing the photocatalytic efficiency. The morphological, chemical, and optical properties of CTH were thoroughly characterized. The CTH demonstrated the maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of 373.3 ± 14.2 mg/g, which was 3.4 times higher than that of CN hydrogel. Furthermore, the photocatalytic reduction rate constant of the CTH was 0.0586 ± 0.0038 min-1, which was 6.4 times higher than that of TN-CdS. Notably, CTH displayed outstanding stability, maintaining 84.9 % of its initial removal efficiency even after undergoing five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. The remarkable performance of CTH in Cr(VI) removal was attributed to its 3D porous structure, comprising CN and TN-CdS. These findings provide novel insights into developing a stable photocatalytic adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal.

Biogenic Punica granatum Flower Extract Assisted ZnFe2O4 and ZnFe2O4-Cu Composites for Excellent Photocatalytic Degradation of RhB Dye

Globally, the textile industry contributes to pollution through accidental discharges or discharge of contaminated wastewater into waterways, significantly affecting water quality. These pollutants, including dye molecules, are environmental hazards for aquatic and terrestrial life. The field of visible light-mediated photocatalysis has experienced rapid growth, driven by the utilization of photocatalysts that can absorb low-energy visible light and effectively degrade dyes. In the present study, we report a simple method to controllably synthesize Fe2O3, ZnO, and ZnFe2O4 using the one-pot synthesis method. In the subsequent step, copper (Cu) was deposited on the surface of ZnFe2O4 (forming ZnFe2O4-Cu) using a facile, green, and cost-effective method. The synthesized samples were characterized using various techniques, including XRD, UV-Vis DRS, FT-IR, SEM-EDX, HR-TEM, XPS, PL, and BET analysis. These techniques were employed to investigate the composition, morphology, structure, and photophysical properties of as-prepared samples. The ZnFe2O4-Cu nanocomposite demonstrated efficient photocatalytic activity for degrading RhB dye pollutants under visible light. The photocatalyst was successfully reused for three consecutive cycles without significantly decreasing performance. Furthermore, during the study, the radical scavenging test emphasized the role of different radicals in the degradation of dye pollutants. This research has the potential to enable the efficient production of high-performance photocatalysts that can rapidly eliminate ecologically harmful dyes from aqueous solutions.

A Review on the Use of Metal Oxide-Based Nanocomposites for the Remediation of Organics-Contaminated Water via Photocatalysis: Fundamentals, Bibliometric Study and Recent Advances

The improper disposal of toxic and carcinogenic organic substances resulting from the manufacture of dyes, drugs and pesticides can contaminate aquatic environments and potable water resources and cause serious damage to animal and human health and to the ecosystem. In this sense, heterogeneous photocatalysis stand out as one effective and cost-effective water depollution technique. The use of metal oxide nanocomposites (MON), from the mixture of two or more oxides or between these oxides and other functional semiconductor materials, have gained increasing attention from researchers and industrial developers as a potential alternative to produce efficient and environmentally friendly photocatalysts for the remediation of water contamination by organic compounds. Thus, this work presents an updated review of the main advances in the use of metal oxide nanocomposites-based photocatalysts for decontamination of water polluted by these substances. A bibliometric analysis allowed to show the evolution of the importance of this research topic in the literature over the last decade. The results of the study also showed that hierarchical and heterogeneous nanostructures of metal oxides, as well as conducting polymers and carbon materials, currently stand out as the main materials for the synthesis of MON, with better photocatalysis performance in the degradation of dyes, pharmaceuticals and pesticides.

Effect of CuO Loading on the Photocatalytic Activity of SrTiO3/MWCNTs Nanocomposites for Dye Degradation under Visible Light

In this study, we report on the preparation of copper oxide/strontium titanate/multi-walled carbon nanotube (CuO/STO/MWCNTs) nanocomposites and their photocatalytic activity for degradation of dye under visible light. The crystalline structures of the nanocomposites were investigated by an X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, which explored the successful fabrication of CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites, and the cubic STO phase was formed in all samples. For the morphological study, the transmission electron microscope (TEM) technique was used, which had proved the successful preparation of CuO and STO nanoparticles. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), dark field scanning transmission electron microscope (DF-STEM-EDX mapping), and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) analysis were performed to evidence the elemental composition of CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites. The optical characteristics were explored via UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence (PL) techniques. These studies clearly indicate the effect of the presence of CuO and MWCNTs on the visible absorption of the CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites. The photocatalytic activity of CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye under visible light irradiation, following first-order kinetics. Among the different x% CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites, the 5 wt.% CuO/STO/MWCNTs nanocomposites showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency for the degradation of MB dye. Moreover, the 5% CuO/STO/MWCNTs showed good stability and recyclability after three consecutive photocatalytic cycles. These results verified that the optimized nanocomposites can be used for photocatalytic applications, especially for dye degradation under visible light.

Effect of CuO Loading on the Photocatalytic Activity of SrTiO3 for Hydrogen Evolution

A CuO-loaded SrTiO3 catalyst showed highly photocatalytic activity for H2 evolution. This catalyst was prepared by an impregnation method and characterized by XRD, TEM, BET, XPS, Uv-vis DRS and PL techniques. Under optimum conditions, the best rate of H2 evolution of the CuO-loaded SrTiO3 catalyst is 5811 µmol h−1g−1, whereas it is a mere 34 µmol h−1g−1 for the pure SrTiO3. High efficiency, low cost and good stability are some of the merits that underline the promising potential of CuO-loaded SrTiO3 in the photocatalytic hydrogen.

Photoinduced electronic and ionic effects in strontium titanate

The interaction of light with solids has been of ever-growing interest for centuries, even more so since the quest for sustainable utilization and storage of solar energy became a major task for industry and research. With SrTiO₃ being a model material for an extensive exploration of the defect chemistry of mixed conducting perovskite oxides, it has also been a vanguard in advancing the understanding of the interaction between light and the electronic and ionic structure of solids. In the course of these efforts, many phenomena occurring during or subsequent to the illumination of SrTiO₃ have been investigated. Here, we give an overview of the numerous photoinduced effects in SrTiO₃ and their inherent connection to electronic structure and defect chemistry. In more detail, advances in the fields of photoconductivity, photoluminescence, photovoltages, photochromism and photocatalysis are summarized and their underlying elemental processes are discussed. In light of recent research, this review also emphasizes the fundamental differences between illuminating SrTiO₃ either at low temperatures (<RT) or at high temperatures (>200 °C), where in addition to electronic processes, also photoionic interactions become relevant. A survey of the multitude of different processes shows that a profound and comprehensive understanding of the defect chemistry and its alteration under illumination is both vital to optimizing devices and to pushing the boundaries of research and advancing the fundamental understanding of solids.
