Abstract
Highly active mitochondria play a significant role in neuron function. Cu2+ and ATP levels in mitochondria regulate neuronal mitochondrial activity. However, mitochondrial activity was often evaluated by mitochondrial membrane potential. Less is known about the dynamics of Cu2+ and ATP in mitochondria. Herein, we developed a two-photon fluorescence probe (MP), which provided a determination of mitochondrial ATP and Cu2+. The fluorescence of MP showed remarkable quenching in the presence of Cu2+ and then gradually recovered in the presence of ATP, which can be used for sequential recognition. MP has high sensitivity to Cu2+ and ATP, with limits of detection (LOD) close to 0.31 nM and 13.6 nM, respectively. Using this useful probe, we monitor the fluctuation of concentrations of Cu2+ and ATP by fluorescence imaging at single neuron and zebrafish.

Highly efficient carbon dots for quantitatively visualizing pH fluctuations in cells, zebrafish, mice and tumors. JOURNAL OF PHOTOCHEMISTRY AND PHOTOBIOLOGY. B, BIOLOGY 2023; 238:112620. Abstract
In vivo pH is closely related to complicated physiological and pathological processes. Quantitatively probing pH and visualizing pH variation via fluorescence (FL) imaging technique in living cells and organisms is crucial but difficult to accomplish. Herein, green fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized, and their distinct advantages of extraordinarily high fluorescence quantum yield (FQY, 71.4%), unique photostability, high selectivity, sterling biocompatibility, appropriate pKa for biosensing, enable CDs to serve as pH-activatable probes for real time quantitative detection of continuous pH fluctuation in living cells, zebrafish, mice and tumors. We believe CDs are presently among the best-of-breed pH probes for comprehensive biomedical applications.

Abstract
Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal treatment of wild jujube and dl-tryptophan. The structure and properties of the CDs were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet visible absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and so on. The as-prepared CDs exhibit excellent excitation-independent but pH-dependent (4.0-12.0) fluorescent features and emit blue strong fluorescence under 365 nm light. Hg2+ can decrease the fluorescence intensity of the CDs through static quenching, while the addition of oxalic acid (OA) recovers it owing to the coordination binding between oxalic acid and Hg2+. Based on this, the as-prepared CDs were used as a new "off-on" fluorescent probe for highly sensitive determination of oxalic acid with a wide linear detection range of 0.1-20 mg L-1 and a low detection limit of 0.057 mg L-1. Moreover, the fluorescent probe was successfully applied to detect oxalic acid in tomato and cherry tomato samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract
A novel fluorescent probe (DSD) was reasonably designed and synthesized with dansyl-labeled dipeptide (Dan-Ser-Asp-NH2). DSD featured remarkably large Stokes shift (230 nm) and perfect water solubility, and exhibited high selectivity and rapid recognition toward Cu2+via fluorescence quenching. The detection limit of DSD for Cu2+ was 2.4 nM, indicated that DSD has excellent sensitivity. In addition, the stoichiometry between DSD and Cu2+ were detected as 1:1 by fluorescence titration, Job's plot and ESI-HRMS data. As designed, DSD-Cu2+ system was able to sequentially detect CN- according to the displacement approach with fluorescence "off-on" response, and the detection limit for CN- was calculated to be 41.9 nM. Specifically, the response time of DSD with Cu2+ and CN- was less than 40 s, which rendered it suitable for real time detection in actual water samples. In addition, with the alternate addition of Cu2+ and CN-, the reversible cycles could be repeated for at least 10 times, indicated that DSD was a promising reversibility probe. DSD showed low toxicity and good biocompatibility, and was successfully applied to detect Cu2+ and CN- in living cells.

Abstract
Background Carbon dots (CDs) are widely used in cell imaging due to their excellent optical properties, biocompatibility and low toxicity. At present, most of the research on CDs focuses on biomedical application, while there are few studies on the application of microbial imaging. Results In this study, B- and N-doped carbon dots (BN-CDs) were prepared from citric acid, ethylenediamine, and boric acid by microwave hydrothermal method. Based on BN-CDs labeling yeast, the dead or living of yeast cell could be quickly identified, and their growth status could also be clearly observed. In order to further observe the morphology of yeast cell under different lethal methods, six methods were used to kill the cells and then used BN-CDs to label the cells for imaging. More remarkably, imaging of yeast cell with ultrasound and antibiotics was significantly different from other imaging due to the overflow of cell contents. In addition, the endocytosis mechanism of BN-CDs was investigated. The cellular uptake of BN-CDs is dose, time and partially energy-dependent along with the involvement of passive diffusion. The main mechanism of endocytosis is caveolae-mediated. Conclusion BN-CDs can be used for long-term stable imaging of yeast, and the study provides basic research for applying CDs to microbiol imaging. Graphical Abstract ![]()

Abstract
A new kind of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) was synthesized via a simple hydrothermal strategy using humic acid as the carbon source and urea as the nitrogen source. The fluorescence intensity of as-prepared N-CDs was quenched significantly in presence of Cu2+ based on a specific inner filter effect, which could be utilized to construct a selective sensor for monitoring Cu2+ in aqueous samples. The sensor exhibited good linearity over the range of 0.1-2 μM, and high sensitivity with a detection limit of 25 nM. Under the optimal conditions, there was no significant interference by other metal ions such as Cd2+, Al3+, Cr3+, Fe3+, Pb2+, Na+, Ni+, Fe2+, Ba2+, Ca2+, Co2+, Mg2+, As3+, K+, Zn2+ for Cu2+ detecting except Hg2+.The interference of Hg2+ can be masked by addition of sodium chloride. The experimental results demonstrated that the prepared N-CDs owned strong fluorescence, high monodispersity, good stability and good water solubility, and the constructed sensor had many advances and great application prospect in environmental field.
