Computational modeling of electric imaging in weakly electric fish: insights for physiology, behavior and evolution

The Use of Supervised Learning Models in Studying Agonistic Behavior and Communication in Weakly Electric Fish

Despite considerable advances, studying electrocommunication of weakly electric fish, particularly in pulse-type species, is challenging as very short signal epochs at variable intervals from a few hertz up to more than 100 Hz need to be assigned to individuals. In this study, we show that supervised learning approaches offer a promising tool to automate or semiautomate the workflow, and thereby allowing the analysis of much longer episodes of behavior in a reasonable amount of time. We provide a detailed workflow mainly based on open resource software. We demonstrate the usefulness by applying the approach to the analysis of dyadic interactions of Gnathonemus petersii. Coupling of the proposed methods with a boundary element modeling approach, we are thereby able to model the information gained and provided during agonistic encounters. The data indicate that the passive electrosensory input, in particular, provides sufficient information to localize a contender during the pre-contest phase, fish did not use or rely on the theoretically also available sensory information of the contest outcome-determining size difference between contenders before engaging in agonistic behavior.

A bio-inspired electric camera for short-range object inspection in murky waters

Underwater object inspection by optical sensors is usually unreliable in turbid or dark environments. Here, we designed a biomimetic 'electric camera', inspired by weakly electric fish Gnathonemus petersii, which successfully use active electrolocation for this task. The device probed nearby objects with a weak electric field and captured 'electric images' of the targets by processing the object-evoked field modulations. The camera-based electric images strongly resembled those available to G. petersii. Furthermore, by extracting the fish's analytical cues from these images, close objects could be reliably analysed. Based on the level of 'image blurring' short distances of electrolocation targets, spheres of different sizes and material were estimated. Natural targets, fish or plants, were identified irrespective of their size or distance by their two individual 'electric colours' derived from electric images. Furthermore, we introduce an image cue, called the 'electric outline', which provided information resembling a target's optical contour. Our results indicate that bio-inspired electric imaging principles provide promising cues for sensor-based, short-range object inspections in murky waters. By resembling the electric imaging applied by G. petersii our device can also be used for 'reverse biomimetics', revealing imaging cues that so far have not been considered for weakly electric fish.

Additive neurogenesis supported by multiple stem cell populations mediates adult spinal cord development: A spatiotemporal statistical mapping analysis in a teleost model of indeterminate growth

The knifefish Apteronotus leptorhynchus exhibits indeterminate growth throughout adulthood. This phenomenon extends to the spinal cord, presumably through the continuous addition of new neurons and glial cells. However, little is known about the developmental dynamics of cells added during adult growth. The present work characterizes the structural and functional development of the adult spinal cord in this model organism through a comprehensive quantitative analysis of the spatial and temporal dynamics of new cells at various developmental stages. This analysis, based on a novel statistical mapping approach, revealed within the adult spinal cord a wide distribution of both mitotically active and quiescent Sox2-expressing stem/progenitor cells (SPCs). While such cells are particularly concentrated within the ependymal layer near the central canal, the majority of them reside in the parenchyma, resembling the distribution of SPCs observed in the mammalian spinal cord. The active SPCs in the adult knifefish spinal cord give rise to transit amplifying progenitor cells that undergo a few additional mitotic divisions before developing into Hu C/D+ neurons and S100+ glial cells. There is no evidence of long-distance migration of the newborn cells. The persistence of cell proliferation and differentiation, combined with low levels of apoptosis, leads to a continuous addition of cells to the existing tissue. Newly generated neurons have functional and behavioral relevance, as indicated by the integration of axons of new electromotor neurons into the electric organ of these weakly electric fish. Passive and active electroreception during agonistic encounters in the weakly electric fish Gymnotus omarorum

Agonistic behaviour related to territorial defence is likely to be costly in terms of energy loss and risk of injury. Hence information about the fighting ability of a potential opponent could influence the outcome of the contest. We here study electric images of the territorial and aggressive weakly electric fish Gymnotus omarorum in the context of agonistic behaviour. We show that passive and active electric images may drive the approach towards an opponent. The likelihood of first attacks can be predicted in these fish based on electric image information, suggesting that aggressive interactions may in fact be triggered through the passive electrosensory information.

Ultrafast traveling wave dominates the electric organ discharge of Apteronotus leptorhynchus: an inverse modelling study

Identifying and understanding the current sources that give rise to bioelectric fields is a fundamental problem in the biological sciences. It is very difficult, for example, to attribute the time-varying features of an electroencephalogram recorded from the head surface to the neural activity of specific brain areas; model systems can provide important insight into such problems. Some species of fish actively generate an oscillating (c. 1000 Hz) quasi-dipole electric field to communicate and sense their environment in the dark. A specialized electric organ comprises neuron-like cells whose collective signal underlies this electric field. As a step towards understanding the detailed biophysics of signal generation in these fish, we use an anatomically-detailed finite-element modelling approach to reverse-engineer the electric organ signal over one oscillation cycle. We find that the spatiotemporal profile of current along the electric organ constitutes a travelling wave that is well-described by two spatial Fourier components varying in time. The conduction velocity of this wave is faster than action potential conduction in any known neuronal axon (>200 m/s), suggesting that the spatiotemporal features of high-frequency electric organ discharges are not constrained by the conduction velocities of spinal neuron pathways.
