Effect of storage in artificial saliva and thermal cycling on Knoop hardness of resin denture teeth

Surface hardness and wear resistance of prefabricated and CAD-CAM milled artificial teeth: A cross-over clinical study

PURPOSE

To clinically evaluate the surface roughness and wear resistance of prefabricated and CAD-CAM milled acrylic resin teeth for complete dentures.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In a cross-over study design, 10 completely edentulous patients were randomly included in this study and given two complete dentures. The first complete denture was made using prefabricated teeth, while the second was constructed using CAD-CAM milled teeth. Following insertion (T0), 3 months (T3), and 6 months (T6), the complete dentures were scanned. Utilizing 3D surface super-imposition techniques, the vertical (2D wear), and volumetric (3D wear) material loss were measured. The hardness of the teeth was evaluated at the time of denture insertion (T0) and then after 6 months (T6) of denture insertion by digital Vickers hardness tester. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS software. Paired groups were compared by paired t-test. Also, a repeated measure test was used. The significant difference was considered if p ≤ 0.05.

RESULTS

The time of denture function was linearly correlated with the wear of the prefabricated and CAD-CAM milled denture tooth. Prefabricated acrylic teeth had significantly more vertical and volumetric wear after 3 and 6 months, compared to CAD-CAM milled denture teeth where p-values were 0.01, 0.009, 0.003, and 0.024, respectively. Additionally, CAD-CAM milled teeth displayed significantly higher hardness values than prefabricated teeth both before and after 6 months of use where p-values were 0.001. After 6 months, all studied teeth showed a decrease in their hardness.

CONCLUSIONS

In terms of wear resistance and surface hardness, CAD-CAM milled acrylic resin teeth were superior to prefabricated acrylic resin artificial teeth once the complete denture functions.

Resin Cement Residue Removal Techniques: In Vitro Analysis of Marginal Defects and Discoloration Intensity Using Micro-CT and Stereomicroscopy

The objective was to compare marginal defects and evaluate discoloration for adhesively cemented veneers in vitro when using two cement removal techniques. Twenty premolars were prepared with chamfer and borders in enamel. IPS e.max CAD veneers were cemented using Panavia V5 and divided in two groups (n = 10): cement excess removed with a probe after tack-curing for 3–5 s, or cement excess removed with a brush, then completely polymerized. All teeth were stored in alginate gel until micro-CT examination. Scanning was performed twice: directly after cementation and after thermocycling (5000 cycles, between 5 and 55 °C). To analyze discoloration, teeth were colored using 0.5% basic fuchsine and examined under a stereomicroscope. Depth of dye infiltration was scored 0 (no discoloration) to 5 (discoloration along the entire margin). Statistically significant differences of cement defects before thermocycling were reported, where brushing showed more defects than probing (p = 0.0161). After thermocycling, the defects increased for both groups. Extensive discoloration was the most common (55.56%) when removing excess by probing; by brushing, 90% of the specimens exhibited slight discoloration (p = 0.008). Regression analysis showed no relationship between type of defect and degree of discoloration. Removing cement with a brush causes more marginal defects, however less discoloration after thermocycling.

Effect of thermocycling on the surface properties of CAD-CAM denture base materials after different surface treatments

PURPOSE

To evaluate the effect of thermocycling on the water contact angle (WCA), surface roughness (SR), and microhardness (MH) of different CAD-CAM PMMA denture base materials after different surface treatments (conventional laboratory polishing, polishing kit, or surface sealant).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Disk-shaped specimens (10 × 2 mm) of 3 different CAD-CAM PMMAs, AvaDent (AV); Merz M-PM (M-PM); Polident (Poli), and a conventional heat-polymerized PMMA (Vynacron) (CV) (n=21) were divided into 3 different surface treatment groups (n=7): conventional laboratory polishing (CLP), polishing with acrylic resin polisher kit (PK), and a surface sealant (Palaseal) (SSC). Stereomicroscopic images were taken both before and after thermocycling. WCA, SR, and MH of all specimens were measured before and after thermocycling and compared by using a 2-way ANOVA (α=0.05).

RESULTS

After thermocycling, WCA significantly increased for CLP- or PK -applied (P<.001) specimens of all materials and SSC-applied M-PM (P=.002), SR significantly increased for CLP-applied M-PM (P=.027) and PK-applied Poli (P=.041), and MH significantly decreased for CLP- or PK-applied AV (P = .001, P < .001, respectively), CV (P=.033, P=.023, respectively), and M-PM (P=.003, P=.001, respectively), SSC-applied M-PM (P<.001), and CLP-applied Poli (P<.001). Stereomicroscopic images revealed rougher surfaces for PK-applied specimens.

CONCLUSIONS

After thermocycling, surface treatment had a significant effect on water contact angle and surface roughness. CLP or PK application resulted in hydrophobic surfaces compared with before thermocycling. CLP or SSC application on CAD-CAM PMMAs resulted in smoother surfaces. Thermocycling lowered the microhardness of all PMMAs, and the decrease was significant in CLP- or PK-applied PMMAs, except for PK-applied Poli.

Erosion of CAD/CAM restorative materials and human enamel: An in vitro study

This in vitro study used the same frequency and duration of acid contact as a previous in situ/in vivo study to evaluate the effect of erosion on CAD/CAM restorative materials and human enamel and to compare the effects of in vitro and in situ/in vivo acid challenges on CAD/CAM restorative materials and human enamel. The CAD/CAM restorative materials (IPS e.max CAD, Lava Ultimate, and PMMA block) and human enamel were eroded by immersion in 150 ml of cola drink for 14 days (4 × 5 min/day). The surface microhardness and surface roughness of the specimens were measured at baseline (T1), day 7 (T2), and day 14 (T3). The substance losses were measured at T2 and T3. The data were statistically analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni's test (α = 0.05). Erosion significantly decreased the surface microhardness of the CAD/CAM restorative materials and human enamel (all P < 0.001). The overall percentage of surface microhardness loss (%SMH_l) of the PMMA block and enamel due to in vitro erosion was significantly higher than that due to in situ/in vivo erosion (P = 0.02 and P < 0.001, respectively). Consistent with in situ/in vivo erosion, the surface roughness and profile of the tested restorative materials remained unchanged after in vitro erosion. A significant increase in the surface roughness and substance loss was observed for enamel after in vitro erosion (all P < 0.001). The overall substance loss of enamel due to in vitro erosion was significantly higher than that due to in situ/in vivo erosion (P < 0.001). In conclusion, erosion decreased the surface microhardness of the CAD/CAM restorative materials and human enamel. Moreover, erosion negatively influenced the substance loss and surface roughness of human enamel. For the substance loss of enamel and %SMH_l of PMMA block and enamel, the in vitro erosive effects were approximately 1-2 times greater than the in situ/in vivo effects. However, for the surface roughness and profile of the CAD/CAM restorative materials, no significant difference was found between in vitro and in situ/in vivo erosion.

Effect of Commercially Available Denture Adhesives on Microhardness of a Flexible Denture Base Material

BACKGROUND

Various clinical cases of thermopress denture base materials necessitate the use of denture adhesives to achieve proper retention and stability of the removable prosthesis. Therefore; the microhardness of these flexible materials as surface property and its' alterations due to the application of various denture adhesives are still crucial issues to be discussed.

AIM

This study aimed to investigate the impact of two commercially available denture adhesives (DAs) on microhardness of a flexible denture base material.

METHODS

A total of 30 duplicate disc specimens (DS) were fabricated from a thermoplastic injection moulded resin (TR). The obtained 30-disc specimens (DS) were stored in distilled water for seven days, and then their microhardness was measured using Knoop Hardness Test (KHN) under a 10 g load for 10 seconds. The denture adhesives were prepared, and 15 DS were immersed in Corega Super Cream, while the other 15 DS were soaked in Fitty Dent Cream. All DS were stored in distilled water at 37°C. After 30 days of immersion in DAs, microhardness of DS was again measured. T-test for paired observation was used to investigate any alterations in microhardness between the baseline and after 30 days of immersion in the DAs. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 20®, Graph Pad Prism® and Microsoft Excel 2016 with a significant level set at P ≤ 0.05.

RESULTS

Student`s t-test had revealed a significant difference between both groups after application of denture adhesive as a P value < 0.05. The obtained results showed that DA material type, flexible denture base material and their surface interaction provoke a statistically significant outcome on the mean microhardness.

CONCLUSIONS

DAs were found to affect the microhardness of thermoplastic injection moulded resin (TR); which may jeopardise the durability and serviceability of complete denture and patients' acceptance and comfortability.

Can Fiber Application Affect the Fracture Strength of Endodontically Treated Teeth Restored with a Low Viscosity Bulk-Fill Composite?

Objective

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of different fiber insertion techniques and thermomechanical aging on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated mandibular premolar teeth restored using bulk-fill composites.

Materials and Methods

Eighty human mandibular premolar teeth were randomly divided into eight groups: Group IN, Group BF, Group PRF1, Group PRF2, Group IN-TMA, Group BF-TMA, Group PRF1-TMA ,and Group PRF2-TMA. Group IN (intact) and Group IN-TMA (intact but subjected to thermomechanical aging) served as control groups. In the other six groups, endodontic treatment was performed and standardized mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) cavities were prepared. In BF, PRF1, and PRF2, the cavities were restored with bulk-fill composite only, bulk-fill/Ribbond, and bulk-fill/additional Ribbond, respectively. In BF-TMA, PRF1-TMA, and PRF2-TMA, the teeth were subjected to thermomechanical aging after the restorations. All of the teeth were fractured on the universal testing machine. Fracture surfaces were analyzed with a stereomicroscope.

Results

Control groups showed significantly higher fracture strengths than tested groups (P<0.05). No statistically significant difference was observed among the tested groups (P>0.05). Most of the favorable fractures were seen in PRF1, PRF2, and PRF2-TMA. Most of the unfavorable fractures were seen in BF-TMA.

Conclusions

Although fiber insertion with different techniques did not increase the fracture strength of teeth restored with bulk-fill composites, it increased the favorable fracture modes. Thermomechanical aging did not change the fracture strength of the groups.

Evaluation of Radiopacity of Luting Cements Submitted to Different Aging Procedures

PURPOSE

To evaluate the radiopacity of luting cements submitted to different aging procedures.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twenty discs (1 × 4 mm) of each of the following cements were prepared: zinc phosphate, RelyX Luting 2, Variolink 2, AllCem, RelyX U200, Multilink, Panavia F2.0, and RelyX ARC. Then, they were randomly divided into two groups (n = 10/group), according to the aging procedure: thermal cycling group and water storage group. Before and after aging procedures, specimens were x-rayed with an aluminum step-wedge (11 steps, 1 mm thick each) and three dental slices (1 mm thick). The radiopacity was evaluated by means of optical density, which was measured using ImageJ software. The values were converted into millimeters of aluminum with a logistic regression calibration curve. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc test (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

In the thermal cycling group, RelyX Luting 2, RelyX U200, and Panavia F2.0 showed a statistically significant reduction in radiopacity (p < 0.05). In the water storage group, all cements showed a significant reduction in radiopacity (p < 0.05), and RelyX Luting 2 and Panavia F2.0 performed below the desired ISO 4049 standard.

CONCLUSIONS

The radiopacity of luting cements can decrease after aging, especially after 1-year water storage.

Effect of aging and curing mode on the compressive and indirect tensile strength of resin composite cements

BACKGROUND

Resin composite cements are used in dentistry to bond ceramic restorations to the tooth structure. In the oral cavity these cements are subjected to aging induced by masticatory and thermal stresses. Thermal cycling between 5 and 55 °C simulates the effect of varying temperatures in vitro. Purpose of this study was to compare indirect tensile to compressive strength of different cements before and after thermal cycling. The effect of the curing mode was additionally assessed.

METHODS

Indirect tensile strength and compressive strength of 7 dual-curing resin composite cements (Multilink Automix, Multilink SpeedCem, RelyX Ultimate, RelyX Unicem 2 Automix, Panavia V5, Panavia SA Plus, Harvard Implant semi-permanent) was measured. The specimens were either autopolymerized or light-cured (n = 10). The mechanical properties were assessed after 24 h water storage at 37 °C and after aging (20,000 thermo cycles) with previous 24 h water storage at 37 °C.

RESULTS

Indirect tensile strength ranged from 5.2 ± 0.8 to 55.3 ± 4.2 MPa, compressive strength from 35.8 ± 1.8 MPa to 343.8 ± 19.6 MPa.

CONCLUSIONS

Thermocyclic aging of 20,000 cycles can be considered a suitable method to simulate the degradation of indirect tensile strength but not compressive strength of resin composite cements. The effect of thermocycling and the curing mode on the resin composite cements is material dependent and cannot be generalized.

Effect of nanoscale particles incorporation on microhardness of polymers for oral prosthesis

Objectives:

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the incorporation of pigments on surface hardness of four acrylic resins subjected to thermocycling and analyze their elemental composition using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).

Materials and Methods:

Twenty-one discs of each resin were fabricated, whereas seven had no additive, seven had 3% of nanoscale pigments and last seven had 10% of them. The percentage was obtained by measuring the total weight of each resin disc. Besides, seven discs composed by only nanoscale pigments were also fabricated, totalizing 91 discs. The pigment was weighed by using an analytical balance (BEL Analytical Equipment, SP, Brazil). The surface hardness was measured through a hardness tester machine before and after thermocycling (5–55°C, for 2000 cycles). Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (P < 0.05). The chemical composition of the discs composed only by nanoscale pigments was analyzed with EDS test.

Results:

Hardness of all resins decreased after thermocycling. The lowest values were observed on the discs with 3% of nanoscale pigments and discs fabricated only with them. EDS showed the presence of titanium dioxide.

Conclusion:

Discs with 7% of pigments (after thermocycling) showed higher hardness values.

Effects of Different pH-Values on the Nanomechanical Surface Properties of PEEK and CFR-PEEK Compared to Dental Resin-Based Materials

The study determines the stability and durability of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and a carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK (CFR-PEEK) with 30% short carbon fibers, a dental composite based on Bis-GMA and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) under the influence of different pH-values of the oral environment in vitro. Nanomechanical properties were investigated by nanoindentation and nanoscratch tests before and after incubation of the specimens at 37 °C for 30 days in artificial saliva with pH-values of 3, 7 and 10, respectively. Nanoindentation and nanoscratching tests were performed using the Hysitron TI950 TriboIndenter to evaluate the reduced elastic moduli, nanohardness, viscoelasticity, friction coefficient and residual scratch profiles. After treatment, the nanomechanical properties of unfilled PEEK did not change. The reduced elastic moduli and nanohardness of the carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK increased significantly. The reduced elastic moduli and nanohardness of CHARISMA decreased. The plasticity of all materials except that of the unfilled PEEK increased. This indicates that different pH-values of the artificial saliva solutions had no obvious influences on the nanomechanical properties of the PEEK matrix. Therefore, the aging resistance of the unfilled PEEK was higher than those of other materials. It can be deduced that the PEEK matrix without filler was more stable than with filler in the nanoscale.

Simulated Body Fluid Sorption and Solubility of Silica Reinforced Dental Resin Composites

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of filler loading on the sorption and solubility of Simulated Body Fluid (SBF) of self-prepared micro dental resin composites. The prepared resin composite was based on silica (SiO2) particles and bisphenol-a-glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA) as a base monomer and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) as a co-monomer. The filler was mixed with monomers, in proportions of 40, 50 and 60 wt.%. A resin matrix containing 0 wt.% filler was used as the control composition to evaluate the effect of filler loading on the sorption and solubility of SBF. The experimental methods were based on the procedure mentioned in the ISO 4049 (2009) standard for dentistry-Polymer-based restorative Materials. The sorption and solubility of resin matrix/SiO2composite decreased gradually as the filler loading increased. The increase of filler loading showed significant differences in the sorption and solubility as tested by ANOVA (P= 0.000).

Effect of experimental Ricinus communis solution for denture cleaning on the properties of acrylic resin teeth

This study evaluated Knoop hardness, surface roughness and color alteration of artificial teeth for dentures after immersion in water, 1% sodium hypochlorite and an experimental solution of 2% Ricinus communis (RC). Thirty specimens of Vipi, Biolux and Trilux were analyzed. Tests of Knoop hardness, surface roughness and color alteration were conducted immediately after specimen preparation (T0) and after two immersion protocols for 15 days (ΔT(15)) and 183 days (ΔT(183)). Data variation (ΔT) were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey's test (p<0.05). At ΔT(15), Vipi presented hardness increase and Biolux presented the highest variation (p=0.01). RC caused the highest increase in hardness (p=0) and the lowest increase (p=0.005) in roughness. Biolux presented the lowest color alteration (p =0). At ΔT(183), Trilux underwent the highest hardness variation (p=0). Biolux presented an increase in roughness (p=0). There was no significant differences in color alteration among the artificial teeth (p=0.06) and among solutions (p=0.08) after 183 days of immersion. All solutions (distilled water, 1% sodium hypochlorite and 2% RC) caused alterations on the analyzed properties. Both immersion protocols caused alterations on the analyzed properties.

The effect of long-term disinfection procedures on hardness property of resin denture teeth

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of long-term disinfection procedures on the Vickers hardness (VHN) of acrylic resin denture teeth.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Five acrylic resin denture teeth (Vipi Dent Plus-V, Trilux-T, Biolux-B, Postaris-P and Artiplus-A) and one composite resin denture teeth (SR-Orthosit-O) were embedded in heat-polymerised acrylic resin within polyvinylchloride tubes. Specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 48 h. Measurements of hardness were taken after the following disinfection procedures: immersion for 7 days in 4% chlorhexidine gluconate or in 1% sodium hypochlorite (CIm and HIm group, respectively) and seven daily cycles of microwave sterilisation at 650 W for 6 min (MwS group). In the WIm group, specimens were maintained in water during the time used to perform the disinfection procedures (7 days). Data were analysed with anova followed by the Bonferroni procedure (α = 0.01).

RESULTS

Microwave disinfection decreased the hardness of all acrylic resin denture teeth (p < 0.001). Immersion for 7 days in 4% chlorhexidine gluconate or distilled water had significant effect on the hardness of the acrylic resin denture teeth A (p < 0.01), and 1% sodium hypochlorite on teeth T (p < 0.01). All disinfection procedures decrease the hardness of the composite resin denture teeth (p < 0.01). Teeth O exhibited the highest and teeth V the lowest hardness values in the control group (p < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Disinfection procedures changed the hardness of resin denture teeth.
