Abstract
The amygdala, known for its functional heterogeneity, plays a critical role in the neural mechanism of adolescent major depressive disorder (aMDD). However, changes in its subregional functional networks in relation to stressful factors remain unclear. We recruited 78 comorbidity-free, medication-naive aMDD patients and 40 matched healthy controls (HC) to explore changes in resting-state functional connectivity (FC) across four amygdala subregions: the centromedial nucleus (CM), the basolateral nucleus (LB), the superficial nucleus (SF), and the amygdalostriatal transition area (Astr). Then, we performed partial correlation analysis to investigate the relationship between amygdala subregional FC and stressful factors as measured by the Chinese Version of Family Environment Scale (FES-CV) and the Adolescent Self-Rated Life Events Scale (ASLEC). Compared to HC, aMDD patients demonstrated significantly decreased functional connectivity between the left CM and left precentral gyrus, as well as between left SF and left precentral gyrus, and between left LB and posterior cingulate gyrus (PCC)/precuneus. In aMDD group, left CM-precentral gyrus FC exhibited negative correlation with interpersonal relationship and punishment, and positive correlation with family cohesion and expressiveness. This study reveals distinct patterns of abnormal functional connectivity among amygdala subregions in aMDD. Our findings suggest that the CM network, in particular, may be involved in stress-related factors in aMDD, which provide a potential target for the prevention and treatment of adolescent depression.

Abstract
Background Major depressive disorder (MDD) has different clinical presentations in males and females. However, the neuroanatomical mechanisms underlying these sex differences are not fully understood. Objective The purpose of present study was to explore the sex differences in brain cortical thickness (CT) and surface area (SA) of MDD and the relationship between these differences and clinical manifestations in different gender. Methods High-resolution T1-weighted images were acquired from 61 patients with MDD and 61 healthy controls (36 females and 25 males, both). The sex differences in CT and SA were obtained using the FreeSurfer software and compared between every two groups by post hoc test. Spearman correlation analysis was also performed to explore the relationships between these regions and clinical characteristics. Results In male patients with MDD, the CT of the right precentral was thinner compared to female patients, although this did not survive Bonferroni correction. The SA of several regions, including right superior frontal, medial orbitofrontal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus triangle, superior temporal, middle temporal, lateral occipital gyrus, and inferior parietal lobule in female patients with MDD was smaller than that in male patients (P < 0.01 after Bonferroni correction). In female patients, the SA of the right superior temporal (r = 0.438, P = 0.008), middle temporal (r = 0.340, P = 0.043), and lateral occipital gyrus (r = 0.372, P = 0.025) were positively correlated with illness duration. Conclusion The current study provides evidence of sex differences in CT and SA in patients with MDD, which may improve our understanding of the sex-specific neuroanatomical changes in the development of MDD.

Abstract
Identifying and integrating the neural correlates of suicidal ideation and behaviors is crucial to expand the knowledge and develop targeted strategies to prevent suicide. This review aimed to describe the neural correlates of suicidal ideation, behavior and the transition between them, using different magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) modalities, providing an up-to-date overview of the literature. To be included, the observational, experimental, or quasi-experimental studies must include adult patients currently diagnosed with major depressive disorder and investigate the neural correlates of suicidal ideation, behavior and/or the transition using MRI. The searches were conducted on PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge and Scopus. Fifty articles were included in this review: 22 on suicidal ideation, 26 on suicide behaviors and two on the transition between them. The qualitative analysis of the included studies suggested alterations in the frontal, limbic and temporal lobes in suicidal ideation associated with deficits in emotional processing and regulation, and in the frontal, limbic, parietal lobes, and basal ganglia in suicide behaviors associated with impairments in decision-making. Gaps in the literature and methodological concerns were identified and might be addressed in future studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ketamine has recently been proposed as a treatment option for suicidality. Whilst its mechanism of action has been explored at molecular levels, the effect on the brain at the organ level remains unclear. Here we investigate immediate post-treatment and prolonged large-scale resting-state neural network changes to elucidate the neuronal underpinnings associated with ketamine's therapeutic effects. METHODS Twenty-eight adults (aged 22-72 years) participated in the Oral Ketamine Trial On Suicidality, which is an open-label trial of weekly sub-anaesthetic doses of oral ketamine over 6 weeks. MRI was acquired at baseline, post-treatment, and follow-up. Functional connectivity changes at post-treatment and follow-up were examined using seed based and independent component analysis. RESULTS The seed-based connectivity analysis revealed significantly reduced connectivity at post-treatment from the right hippocampus to both right and left superior frontal gyrus, from the left anterior parahippocampus to right superior frontal gyrus, left superior frontal gyrus, right middle frontal gyrus, and left frontal operculum cortex. Compared with baseline, the ICA showed reduced anterior default mode network connectivities to bilateral posterior cingulate cortex, middle and anterior cingulate cortex, lingual gyrus, and cuneus and increased connectivity of the frontoparietal network to the right superior parietal lobule at post-treatment. LIMITATIONS Open label pilot study. CONCLUSIONS We have shown sub-anaesthetic doses of ketamine alters connectivity in networks which have been shown to be aberrantly hyper-connected in numerous psychiatric conditions. These neurocircuitry changes are supported by significant reductions in suicide ideation. Our results provide support for the use of ketamine as a treatment for suicidality.
