Sustained effects of mantra meditation compared to music listening on neurocognitive outcomes of breast cancer survivors: A brief report of a randomized control trial

Effects of Music Intervention on Anxiety, Depression Symptoms and Quality of Life in Breast Cancer Patients: A Meta-Analysis

BACKGROUND

Music therapy is often used to relieve anxiety and depression in breast cancer patients, but the clinical effect of music therapy on breast cancer patients is still controversial. This study was a systematic review to investigate the effects of music intervention on anxiety, depression, pain, and quality of life in breast cancer patients.

METHOD

A computer search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and The Cochrane Library repositories was conducted. We searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs), published in English until October 2023, on the effects of music interventions on anxiety, depressive symptoms, pain levels, and quality of life in breast cancer patients. The Cochrane Manual of Systematic Review 5.3 was used to evaluate the quality of the included references, and Stata15.0 software was selected for meta-analysis of the study indicators.

RESULTS

A total of 10 articles were included in this study, including 593 patients. Meta-analysis showed that music intervention could effectively alleviate anxiety symptoms [standardized mean difference (SMD) = -2.12, 95% confidence interval (CI): -3.17~-1.07], depression symptoms (SMD: -0.77, 95% CI: -1.47~-0.07), and pain degree (SMD: -3.47, 95% CI: -6.45~-0.48). There was no significant difference in the improvement of patients' quality of life (SMD: -0.07, 95% CI: -0.48~0.34).

CONCLUSION

Music intervention can effectively relieve anxiety and depression symptoms in patients with breast cancer, and reduce the degree of pain, but demonstration of its ability to improve the quality of life of patients requires additional research.

Interventions promoting cognitive function in patients experiencing cancer related cognitive impairment: A systematic review

OBJECTIVE

To examine the effect of interventions used to enhance cognitive function in patients experiencing cancer-related cognitive impairment.

METHODS

Studies including adults with a non-metastatic cancer who have received chemotherapy as part of their treatment and who have undergone interventions targeting cancer-related cognitive impairment were included. Studies involving patients with metastatic cancer and pre-existing cognitive deficits were excluded. Academic Search Complete, CINAHL Plus with full text, MEDLINE, Education Full Text, PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO, and ERIC were searched for studies published between January 2011 and September 2022. Data extraction and quality appraisal were conducted by two authors and cross-checked by the review team. Quality appraisal was conducted using 12 items from the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Findings were presented narratively without meta-analysis.

RESULTS

Thirty-one studies were included. Interventions were categorised as integrative/complementary, cognitive behavioural therapy and compensatory strategies, exercise, psychoeducational/psychosocial, brain-training, and pharmacological. Over 100 instruments were identified, including the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cognitive, Trail Making Tests-A and B, and instruments measuring secondary outcomes, including depression. Instruments often measured attention and concentration, language, memory, executive function, and/or patient-reported outcomes. Improvements were reported, with most studies measuring some or various aspects of cognitive functioning and very few studies measuring all domains of cognitive functioning, making it difficult to draw definitive conclusions about effectiveness.

CONCLUSIONS

Various interventions are available to treat cancer-related cognitive impairment. Outcome measurement was inconsistent and future research should prioritise using standardised measures. Current evidence, whilst not being definitive, suggests that certain interventions show greater promise than others, including cognitive behavioural therapy and brain training.

EEG-based spatial elements optimisation design method

In the field of digital design, a recent hot topic is the study of the interaction between spatial environment design and human factors. Electroencephalogram (EEG) and eye tracking can be used as quantitative analysis methods for architectural space evaluation; however, conclusions from existing studies on improving the quality of spatial environments based on human factors tend to remain qualitative. In order to realise the quantitative optimisation design of spatial elements from human physiological data, this research used the digital space optimisation method and perceptual evaluation research. In this way, it established an optimisation method for built space elements in real-time using human psychological indicators. Firstly, this method used the specific indicators of the Meditation value and Attention value in the human EEG signal, taking the ThinkGear AM (TGAM) module as the optimisation objective, the architectural space colour and the window size as the optimisation object, and the multi-objective genetic algorithm as the optimisation tool. Secondly, this research combined virtual reality scenarios and parametric linkage models to realise this optimisation method to establish a tool platform and workflow. Thirdly, this study took the optimisation of a typical living space as an example and recruited 50 volunteers to participate in an optimisation experiment. The results indicated that with the iterative optimisation of the multi-objective genetic algorithm, the specific EEG index decreases significantly and the standard deviation of the in-dex fluctuates and decreases during the iterative process, which further indicates that the optimisation method established in this study with the specific EEG index as the optimisation objective is effective and feasible. In addition, this study laid the foundation for more EEG indicators and more complex spatial element opti-misation research in the future.
