Effectiveness of kinesiologic taping on function and pain in patients with hemophilia A

Background

Hemophilic arthropathy frequently results in musculoskeletal adjustments that impair functional capacity.

Aim

We investigated the effects of kinesiologic taping on patients with hemophilic arthropathy in this study.

Materials and Methods

Twenty-six patients were enrolled. Thirteen patients formed the Kinesiologic taping group (KT) and received the interventional protocol consisting of three kinesiologic taping sessions during three weeks; and 13 patients formed the control group (CG) and made three weeks of home exercises. All patients were evaluated using the Functional Independence Score in Hemophilia (FISH), Hemophilia Joint Health Score (HJHS), and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) at baseline, one week, and three weeks.

Results

The mean scores for the VAS, HJSS, and FISH differed significantly before and after 3 weeks in both groups (P < 0.001). However, the differences in medians after the treatment were significantly greater in the KT group than in the CG group (P < 0.001).

Conclusions

Kinesiologic taping was associated with physical improvement in hemophilia patients; however, also kinesiologic taping led to significant improvement in VAS scores.

[Problems and prospects of kinesiotaping use in clinical practice]

Currently the concept of kinesiotaping has become widespread. Kinesiotaping, which was originally implemented in sports medicine, is increasingly used in rehabilitation and various spheres of medicine, such as orthopedics, traumatology, pediatrics, etc. In recent years, the new publications about the kinesiotaping use in neurology and rheumatology have been released, where previously unknown effects, such as improved sensory feedback, have been demonstrated. Great attention is paid to comparative studies of the effects of kinesiotaping and other methods of taping, which have been used for many years. Nevertheless, despite the popularity of this physical therapy and rehabilitation method, the number of scientific studies supporting its use remains insufficient. The effects originally attributed to kinesiotaping are still controversial, and there is insufficient scientific evidence supporting them. It is not reliably determined whether the tape has a tonic or relaxing effect due to the stimulation of the mechanoreceptors and how the taping affects fascial tissue. Its effect on the reduction of pressure in subcutaneous structures, its mechanisms of action on the microcirculatory bloodstream by stimulating exteroceptors and proprioceptors is unclear. The difficulty of kinesiotaping efficacy evaluation consists in the variety of techniques and the necessity to choose the location of the tape applying, its shape, the suitable tension and adhesion time. The article represents the results of the latest scientific researches on the pathogenetic mechanisms of kinesiotaping and efficacy of this technique in various nosologies.

A comparison of Kinesio taping and external electrical stimulation in addition to pelvic floor muscle exercise and sole pelvic floor muscle exercise in women with overactive bladder: a randomized controlled study

PURPOSE

To compare the effects of Kinesio taping® (KT) and external electrical stimulation (ES) in addition to pelvic floor muscle exercise (PFME) and sole PFME in women with overactive bladder (OAB).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Patients with OAB were randomly allocated into PFME, PFME + KT, PFME + ES groups. All treatments were carried out for 6 weeks. OAB symptoms with voiding diary and Overactive Bladder-Version8 (OAB-V8), pelvic floor muscle strength (PFMS) with perineometer, quality of life with King's Health Questionnaire (KHQ) were assessed before (BT) and after treatment (AT). AT, the perception of improvement was inquired.

RESULTS

AT, OAB symptoms and KHQ scores decreased and PFMS improved in all groups (p < 0.05). The intergroup comparisons revealed a further decrease in voids/day, voids/night, OAB-V8, and some KHQ scores, and a further increase in the perception of improvement in the PFME + KT and PFME + ES groups compared to the PFME group (p < 0.05). In the PFME + ES group, there was a further decrease in numbers of incontinence compared to the PFME group, and in severity measures scores compared to the other groups (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

KT and external ES in addition to PFME were more effective than PFME alone in the treatment of OAB.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONPelvic floor muscle exercise was found to be effective in reducing overactive bladder symptoms and increasing quality of life.Kinesio taping or external electrical stimulation in addition to pelvic floor muscle exercise is more effective in improving overactive bladder symptoms, quality of life, and perception of improvement than pelvic floor muscle exercise alone.Kinesio taping and external electrical stimulation can be used as a complementary application in the treatment of overactive bladder.Pelvic floor muscle exercise, pelvic floor muscle exercise + Kinesio taping, and pelvic floor muscle exercise + electrical stimulation applications should be included in conservative treatment options in patients with overactive bladder to reduce symptoms and cost, and improve quality of life.

Effects of kinesio tape application on pain, anxiety, and menstrual complaints in women with primary dysmenorrhea: A randomized sham-controlled trial

AIM

To investigate the effects of kinesio tape (KT) application on pain, anxiety, and menstrual complaints in women with PD and compare this application with control and sham tape (ST).

METHODS

Fifty-one women with PD were randomized into three groups: KT, ST, and control groups. No tape application was performed in the control group. KT was applied on the sacral and suprapubic regions with the ligament technique in the KT group, while it was applied on the trochanter major with no technique in the ST group. Pain, anxiety level, and menstrual complaints were assessed before and after the applications.

RESULTS

The decreases in pain, anxiety levels, and some menstrual complaints after the application were higher in the KT group than those in the other two groups (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

KT application seems to be an effective method in decreasing pain, anxiety level, and some menstrual complaints in women with PD.

The possibility of the use of Kinesio Taping in internal, oncologic, and neurologic diseases: A systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVES

This systematic review aimed to present the current body of knowledge on Kinesio Taping (KT) as a treatment method for patients with internal, oncologic, and neurologic diseases.

DATA SOURCES

PubMed, MEDLINE, CENTRAL (Cochrane Library), EMBASE Excerpta Medica, and Google Scholar.

STUDY SELECTION

The papers were identified through term searches in digital research databases. Based on the review of the available 152 research articles, 12 papers on internal, oncologic, and neurologic diseases were selected. Two of this review's authors, working independently, selected the papers to be included in the analyzed sample, performed a bias risk assessment and assessed the quality of the evidence for the main effects using the Internal Validity Score (IVS) (PEDro) approach. A simplified version of the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (OCEBM) system was used to evaluate the evidence.

DATA EXTRACTION

The full text of each relevant study was read by two independent reviewers to extract data. The collected database was subjected to matrix processing. Variable vectors for individually analyzed categories were designated and used in the meta-analysis.

DATA SYNTHESIS

There are few prospective, randomized controlled trials on KT that include a sufficiently large cohort. Only few of the reviewed papers which discuss the principles of KT met the criteria of scientifically rigorous research.

CONCLUSIONS

We found some evidence to support the use of KT in clinical practice in patients with neurologic, oncologic, and internal diseases. However, there is a need for further clinical trials on the effectiveness of the use of the KT method.

Traditional Biofeedback vs. Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy-Is One Clearly Superior?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a worldwide accepted therapy that has been exclusively used to manage many pelvic floor disorders in adults and children. The aim of this review is to suggest to clinicians an updated understanding of this therapeutic approach in management of children with non-neuropathic voiding dysfunction.

RECENT FINDINGS

Today, pelvic floor muscle training through biofeedback is widely used as a part of a voiding retraining program aiming to help children with voiding dysfunction which is caused by pelvic floor overactivity. Biofeedback on its own, without a pelvic floor training component, is not an effective treatment. Biofeedback is an adjunct to the pelvic floor training. In the current review, we develop the role of pelvic floor physical therapy in management of children with non-neuropathic voiding dysfunction and compare it with biofeedback therapy alone.
