Abstract
The skin is the largest organ in the human body and its physical integrity must be maintained for body homeostasis and to prevent the entry of pathogenic microorganisms. Sodium alginate (SA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) are two polymers widely used in films for wound dressing applications. Furthermore, blends between SA and PVA improve physical, mechanical and biological properties of the final wound healing material when compared to the individual polymers. Different drugs have been incorporated into SA/PVA-based films to improve wound healing activity. It is noteworthy that SA/PVA films can be crosslinked with Ca2+ or other agents, which improves physicochemical and biological properties. Thus, SA/PVA associations are promising for the biomedical field, as a potential alternative for wound treatment. This review focuses on the main techniques for obtaining SA/PVA films, their physical-chemical characterization, drug incorporation, and the advantages and challenges of these films for wound healing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypospadias is a common congenital anomaly which is determined as an abnormal urethral opening on the ventral face of penis. The purpose of this rat model study was to research the effect of topically applied Aloe vera after a tubularized incised plate urethroplasty (TIPU). METHODS The TIPU model was applied to male Wistar albino rats. A total of 30 rats were randomly grouped into 3 groups of 10. Group I was assigned as the control group, treated with 0.9% saline only twice a day for 15 days. Group II received topical Aloe vera gel once a day and Group III received Aloe vera gel twice a day. Spongiofibrosis was graded as 0: none, 1+:≤10% tissues involved, 2+:10%-49% tissues involved, 3+: ≥ 50% tissues involved. RESULTS A higher degree of fibrosis and inflammation was determined in the Group I subjects than in Groups II and III. Fibrosis of grade 3+ was observed in 33% of the control group and not in any of the two Aloe groups (p = 0.043). Inflammation of grade 3+ was seen in 66.7% of the control group, in 10% of Group II, and in 33% of Group III (p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS The topical application of Aloe vera to a surgically created tubularized incised plate urethroplasty model decreased inflammation and fibrosis that may affect the success rates of this operation.

Abstract
Protracted postsurgical inflammation leading to postoperative complications remains a persistent problem in urethral reconstruction. Nanofibers in the form of peptide amphiphiles expressing anti-inflammatory peptides (AIF-PA) have positively modulated local inflammatory responses. Urethroplasty is performed to repair 5 mm ventral urethral defects with: uncoated small intestinal submucosa (SIS); SIS dip-coated with AIF-PA1 (anti-inflammatory treatment), or SIS dip-coated with AIF-PA6 (control) on 12-week-old male Sprague Dawley rats (n = 6/group/timepoint). Animals are euthanized at 14 and 28 d postsurgery. Hematoxylin-eosin, Masson's Trichrome, and immunohistochemistry with primary antibodies against myeloperoxidase (MPO; neutrophils), CD68, CD86, CD206 (macrophages), and proinflammatory cytokines TNFα and IL-1β are performed. Complete urethral healing occurs in 3/6 uncoated SIS (50%), 2/6 SIS+AIF-PA6 (33.3%), and 5/6 SIS+AIF-PA1 (83.3%) animals at 14 d and all at 28 d. Application of AIF-PA1 to SIS substitution urethroplasty decreases MPO+ neutrophils, CD86+ M1 proinflammatory macrophages, TNFα, and IL-1β levels while concurrently increasing levels of CD206+ M2 proregenerative/anti-inflammatory macrophages at the anastomoses and the regenerated tissue at the wound bed (REGEN). AIF-PA1 treatment enhances the healing process, contributing to earlier, complete urethral healing, and increased angiogenesis. Further studies are needed to elucidate the specific mechanism of inflammatory response modulation on angiogenesis and overall urethral healing.
