[Y(dbm) 3 (H 2 O)]: Synthesis, thermal behavior and spin-coating precursor for Y 2 O 3 layer formation

Molecular Dynamics Studies of the Ho(III) Aqua-tris(dibenzoylmethane) Complex: Role of Water Dynamics

The seven-coordinate Ho(III) aqua-tris(dibenzoylmethane)(DBM) complex, referred to as Ho-(DBM)₃·H₂O, was first reported in the late 1960s. It has a threefold symmetric structure, with Ho at the center of three dibenzoylmethane ligands and hydrogen-bonded water to ligands. It is considered that the hydrogen bonds between the water molecule and the ligands surrounding Ho play an important role in the formation of its symmetrical structure. In this work, we developed new force-field parameters for classical molecular dynamics (CMD) simulations to theoretically elucidate the structure and dynamics of Ho-(DBM)₃·H₂O. To develop the force field, structural optimization and molecular dynamics were performed on the basis of ab initio calculations using the plane-wave pseudopotential method. The force-field parameters for CMD were then optimized to reproduce the data obtained from ab initio calculations. Validation of the developed force field showed good agreement with the experimental crystalline structure and ab initio data. The vibrational properties of water in Ho-(DBM)₃·H₂O were investigated by comparison with bulk liquid water. The vibrational motion of water was found to have a characteristic mode originating from stationary rotational motion along the c-axis of Ho(III) aqua-tris(dibenzoylmethane). Contrary to expectations, the hydrogen-bond dynamics of water in Ho-(DBM)₃·H₂O were found to be almost equivalent to those of bulk liquid water except for librational motion. This development route for force-field parameters for CMD and the establishment of water dynamics can advance the understanding of water-coordinated metal complexes with high coordination numbers such as Ho-(DBM)₃·H₂O.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Electrochemistry of Diferrocenyl β-Diketones, -Diketonates, and Pyrazoles

The synthesis of FcC(O)CH(R)C(O)Fc (Fc = Fe(η⁵-C₅H₄)(η⁵-C₅H₅); R = H, 5; ⁿBu, 7; CH₂CH₂(OCH₂CH₂)₂OMe, 9), [M(κ²O,O′-FcC(O)CHC(O)Fc)_n] (M = Ti, n = 3, 10; M = Fe, n = 3, 11; M = BF₂, n = 1, 12), and 1-R′-3,5-Fc₂-^cC₃HN₂ (R′ = H, 13; Me, 14; Ph, 15) is discussed. The solid-state structures of 5, 7, 9, 12, 13, 15, and 16 ([TiCl₂(κ²O,O′-PhC(O)CHC(O)Ph)₂]) show that 7 and 9 exist in their β-diketo form. Compound 13 crystallizes as a tetramer based on a hydrogen bond pattern, including one central water molecule. The electrochemical behavior of 5–7 and 9–16 was studied by cyclic and square-wave voltammetry, showing that the ferrocenyls can separately be oxidized reversibly between −50 and 750 mV (5–7, 9, 12–15: two Fc-related events; 10, 11: six events, being partially superimposed). For complex 10, Ti-centered reversible redox processes appear at −985 (Ti^II/Ti^III) and −520 mV (Ti^III/Ti^IV). Spectro-electrochemical UV-Vis/NIR measurements were carried out on 5, 6, and 12, whereby only 12 showed an IVCT (intervalence charge-transfer) band of considerable strength (ν_max = 6250 cm⁻¹, Δν_½ = 4725 cm⁻¹, ε_max = 240 L·mol⁻¹·cm⁻¹), due to the rigid C₃O₂B cycle, enlarging the coupling strength between the Fc groups.

A β-ketoiminato palladium(II) complex for palladium deposition

The ¦-ketoiminato complex [Pd(OAc)L] (3) can be synthesized by the reaction of bis(benzoylacetone)diethylenetriamine (1, = LH) with [Pd(OAc)2] (2). The structure of 3 in the solid state has been determined by single X-ray diffraction analysis. Complex 3 crystallizes as a dimer (3 2), which is formed by hydrogen bonds between NH and OOAc functionalities of two adjacent ligands. Each of the Pd atoms is complexed by one ON2 donor unit of the polydentate ligand L − and an acetate group. Pd–Pd interactions and hydrogen bond formation between a NH and the C=O acetate moiety lead to a [4 + 2] coordination at Pd. The non-coordinated part of L exists in its ¦-keto-enamine form. The thermal decomposition behavior of 3 2 was studied by TG (thermogravimetry) and TG-MS showing that 3 2 decomposes between 200 and 500°C independent of the applied atmosphere. Under oxygen PdO is produced, while under argon Pd is formed as confirmed by PXRD measurements. Complex 3 2 was applied as a spin-coating precursor (conc. 0.1 mol L−1, volume 1.5 mL, 3000 rpm, deposition time 6 min, heating rate 50 K min−1, holding time 60 min (Ar) and 120 min (air) at T = 800°C). The as-obtained samples are characterized by granulated particles of Pd/PdO on the substrate surface. EDX (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) measurements confirmed the formation of Pd (Ar) or PdO (O2) with up to 12 mol% C impurity.

Synthesis of Mg and Zn diolates and their use in metal oxide deposition

The synthesis of complexes [M(OCHMeCH₂NMeCH₂)₂] (5, M = Mg; 7, M = Zn) is described. Treatment of MeHNCH₂CH₂NMeH (1) with 2-methyloxirane (2) gave diol (HOCHMeCH₂NMeCH₂)₂ (3), which upon reaction with equimolar amounts of MR₂ (4, M = Mg, R = Bu; 6, M = Zn, R = Et) gave 5 and 7. The thermal behavior and vapor pressure of 5 and 7 were investigated to show whether they are suited as CVD (= chemical vapor deposition) and/or spin-coating precursors for MgO or ZnO layer formation. Thermogravimetric (TG) studies revealed that 5 and 7 decompose between 80–530 °C forming MgO and ZnO as evidenced by PXRD studies. In addition, TG-MS-coupled experiments were carried out with 7 proving that decomposition occurs by M–O, C–O, C–N and C–C bond cleavages, as evidenced from the detection of fragments such as CH₄N⁺, C₂H₄N⁺, C₂H₅N⁺, CH₂O⁺, C₂H₂O⁺ and C₂H₃O⁺. The vapor pressure of 7 was measured at 10.4 mbar at 160 °C, while 5 is non-volatile. The layers obtained by CVD are dense and conformal with a somewhat granulated surface morphology as evidenced by SEM studies. In addition, spin–coating experiments using 5 and 7 as precursors were applied. The corresponding MO layer thicknesses are between 7–140 nm (CVD) or 80 nm and 65 nm (5, 7; spin-coating). EDX and XPS measurements confirm the formation of MgO and ZnO films, however, containing 12–24 mol% (CVD) or 5–9 mol% (spin-coating) carbon. GIXRD studies verify the crystalline character of the deposited layers obtained by CVD and the spin-coating processes.

Mg and Zn containing precursors for the generation of metal oxide layers by CVD and/or spin-coating are described.
