Recent progress in luminescent materials based on lanthanide complexes intercalated synthetic clays

Fluorescence turn-on mode of Eu3+ complex nanocomposite to detect histamine for seafood freshness

Biogenic amines (BAs), which naturally occur as chemicals in seafood, are indicators of food freshness and quality. High concentrations of BAs can cause an undesirable inflammatory response. However, traditional detection methods cannot meet the needs of rapid analysis nowadays. It is essential to explore a simple and valid method to monitor the food quality. Herein, we design and prepare a nanoclay-based turn on fluorescent material with BAs response, which could be used for the real-time and visual detection of raw fish freshness. As the concentration of BAs increase, the sensor of the fluorescence signal is significantly enhanced. The sensor demonstrated wonderful response and sensitivity which showed a detection limit of 0.935 mg/L for typical BAs histamine within a linear range of 2-14 mg/L in an aqueous solution. More importantly, we developed a responsive BAs device by doping the sensor into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which is well applied as a rapid-responsive fluorescent marker for visual monitoring the freshness of raw fish.

Highly Luminescent and Stable Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Films for Transparent Luminescent Solar Concentrators

Here, a highly luminescent, stable, and visible-transparent organic-inorganic hybrid film was in situ synthesized in a siloxane-polyether (di-ureasil) sol-gel process by dissolving a 4-hydroxy-2-methyl-1,5-naphthyridine-3-carbonitrile (2mCND) ligand and a europium(III) ion. Doping a europium(III) complex into di-ureasil achieves an boost in photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQY) from 23.25 to 68.9%. In particular, the excellent photostability of the hybrid film was demonstrated after a 15 h aging experiment in strong UV-LED irradiation (∼468 mW/cm²). Compared to the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrix, di-ureasil containing a europium(III) complex shows an improved UV resistance, making it a promising candidate for various photonic applications. By integrating the hybrid film onto an acrylic substrate, a transparent luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) was fabricated, which reveals an optical conversion efficiency of ∼0.51% with a G factor of 3.1 at an optical transmission level of ∼90%. Such an LSC could be of particular interest in future transparent photovoltaic windows.

Luminescent detection of pesticides by color changeable flexible coumarin-3-carboxylic acid/GdF3:Sm3+ composite film

The utilization and residue of pesticides exist multifaceted non-restrictive effects on food safety and ecological protection. Exploitation of rapid and sensitive pesticide detection technology is imperative and will be helpful to better control the detriment of pesticides. Here, a novel flexible film has been prepared based on organic-inorganic composite materials (coumarin-3-carboxylic acid and GdF₃:Sm³⁺), which exhibits good optical performance and can well realize the timely and maneuverable detection for different pesticides. The spectra and luminescence properties of each composition in the composite have been analyzed systematically, and the coordinated fluorescence emission of Sm³⁺ and coumarin-3-carboxylic acid is revealed at an excitation wavelength of 373 nm. Besides, the energy transfer mechanism is also researched by both experiment and theoretical calculation. The actual detection of different pesticides reveals differential fluorescence influence degree. Meanwhile, the flexible film still possesses sensitive recognition in the presence of micro concentration of pesticides. Results indicate that the flexible film with good optical performance can produce visual detection ability and provide a promising strategy for wider detection applications.

Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Luminescent Hydrogel Glued by a Cationic Polymeric Binder

Luminescent hydrogels have shown great potential in many fields, such as lighting, display, imaging, and sensing, because of their unique optical properties, biocompatibility, and easy processing. Organic-inorganic hybrid self-assembly can not only enhance the hydrogels' mechanical strength, but also retain their self-healing ability. Herein, a luminescent supramolecular hydrogel is reported, which is formed via self-assembly of the negatively charged Laponite nanosheets and cationic lanthanide coordination polymer. The corresponding results reveal that the multiple binding interaction between Laponite and the polymeric binder is vital for improving the mechanical performance of the obtained luminescent supramolecular hydrogel.

Bifunctional Paramagnetic and Luminescent Clays Obtained by Incorporation of Gd3+ and Eu3+ Ions in the Saponite Framework

A novel bifunctional saponite clay incorporating gadolinium (Gd3+) and europium (Eu3+) in the inorganic framework was prepared by one-pot hydrothermal synthesis. The material exhibited interesting luminescent and paramagnetic features derived from the co-presence of the lanthanide ions in equivalent structural positions. Relaxometry and photoluminescence spectroscopy shed light on the chemical environment surrounding the metal sites, the emission properties of Eu3+, and the dynamics of interactions between Gd3+ and the inner-sphere water placed in the saponite gallery. The optical and paramagnetic properties of this solid make it an attractive nanoplatform for bimodal diagnostic applications.

Color-Tunable Aqueous Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Supramolecular Assembly

Developing room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with color-tunability performance in an aqueous environment is crucial for application in optoelectronic areas to a higher stage, such as multicolor display, visual detection of external stimulus, and high-level information anticounterfeiting, but still faces a formidable challenge. Herein, we propose an efficient design strategy to develop excitation wavelength-responsive RTP supramolecular co-assembly systems of a simple benzoic acid derivative and Laponite (Lap) clay nanoplates in aqueous solution, displaying an ultralong lifetime (0.632 s) and a high phosphorescence quantum efficiency (18.04%) simultaneously. Experimental and theoretical research studies suggest that this distinctive feature is due to the generation of more and efficient intersystem crossing pathways benefiting from the coexistence of isolated and J-aggregation states via controlling the doping of the benzoic acid derivative and the inhibition of phosphorescence quenching by water because of the synergistic effects of robust hydrogen-bonding interactions between Lap and the benzoic acid derivative, J-aggregations of the benzoic acid derivative, and good oxygen tolerance of the Lap clay. By virtue of their excellent RTP performances in aqueous solution, the visual colorimetric detection of Ag⁺ in a water environment was achieved for the first time, and visible and high-level information encryption was accomplished as well.

Visual Luminescent Probes Constructed by Eu3+ Complex-Functionalized Silica Nanocomposites and Their Langmuir-Blodgett Films at Interfaces

The trivalent europium ion (Eu³⁺) has garnered a great deal of interest for the design of luminescent materials possessing compound-independent emission bands, strong luminescent intensity, and long emission lifetimes. We herein introduce a synthetic methodology capable of constructing visual luminescent probes from Eu³⁺ complex-functionalized silica nanocomposites and their Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films at interfaces. In order to facilitate the coordinative stabilization of Eu³⁺ over carrier surfaces, silica nanoparticles (nanoSiO₂) were pregrafted with terpyridyl (TPy) to make nanoSiO₂TPy linkers. Then, a well-designed coordination reaction of nanoSiO₂TPy with EuCl₃ and 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (DPA) was carried out at solid-liquid and air-water interfaces, where our desired material (denoted as nanoSiO₂TPy@EuDPA) and its corresponding LB film are obtained. The presence of TPy and DPA interacting with Eu³⁺ plays a key role in regulating the chemical nature of the particle surface, hence giving rise to closely packed nanocomposite arrays in the film. As a result, the improvement in uniformity and stability is achieved alongside the enhancement in emission intensity and lifetime. With such advantageous optical properties, we find them workable as facile, green, and affordable luminescent sensors, by which a range of common toxic anions (Cr₂O₇^2-, MnO₄^-, and PO₄^3-) can be visually and quantitatively recognized. Notably, the LB film-based material could afford a higher K_sv value (1.53 × 10⁵ M^-1), a lower detection limit (0.157 μM), and better recyclability than its original powder analogue, showcasing its utility as a more promising candidate for practical use.

Novel light-emitting clays with structural Tb3+ and Eu3+ for chromate anion detection

Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions were encapsulated for the first time in the inorganic layers of a synthetic saponite clay following a one-pot synthetic approach. The co-presence of the two metal ions led to tuneable light-emitting properties, promoted by an efficient Tb3+ → Eu3+ energy transfer and enhanced Stokes shift character. To our knowledge, the so-prepared luminescent material was tested for the first time as an optical sensor for the detection of chromate anions in water.

Chameleon Luminophore for Erasable Encrypted and Decrypted Devices: From Dual-Channel, Programmable, Smart Sensory Lanthanide Hydrogel to Logic Devices

With the rapid development of the data security technology, increasing attention has been paid to programmable memory materials with desirable security. However, most conventional memory devices only have a single switchable color state. In this research, a kind of pH-responsive Chameleon luminescent sensor (Lap@Eu-OFX, Lap = laponite, OFX = ofloxacin) based on lanthanide doping has been fabricated, which can realize highly contrast, dynamically controlled full-color display by changing the pH value of the solution. The advanced programmable security inks, including the green and red luminescent inks, have been prepared and used to protect confidential information. More interestingly, triethylamine and hydrochloric acid are selected as encryption and decryption reagents, which can repeatedly switch the emission color of important data. Hence, the high-tech security inks show great potential in data coding, multiencryption, and decryption under UV light. Furthermore, the designed dual-channel memory device, Lap@Eu-OFX@CS (CS = Chitosan), enables reversible synchronous switching of sol-gel and emission color when converting from acid to base conditions. This can be dynamically monitored by a subsequent logic gate system and can be converted and stored into binary values. This work provides an effective approach for the design and promising application of information encryptor, smart monitor, and circuit controllers.

Efficient preparation of kaolinite/methanol intercalation composite by using a Soxhlet extractor

Kaolinite/methanol intercalation composite (KMe) is a key precursor for preparing clay-based inorganic/organic hybrid materials and kaolinite nanoscrolls. However, synthesis of KMe is a time and methanol dissipative process and the complexity of this process also limits its further applications. In this study, Soxhlet extractor was introduced to synthesize an intercalation composite and KMe was efficiently synthesized in a Soxhlet extractor through a continuous displacement process by using kaolinite/DMSO intercalation composite (KD) as a precursor. The formation process of kaolinite/methanol intercalation composite was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The results showed that the DMSO in kaolinite could be completely displaced by methanol in this process and the preparation of KMe could be completed in 8 hours, which was far faster than the reported methods. Moreover, methanol used in this process could be recycled. Furthermore, the resulting material could be successfully used to prepare kaolinite nanoscrolls in high yield.

Luminescence resonance energy transfer in hybrid materials based on terbium(iii) complex, rhodamine B and nanoclay

We prepared a novel kind of luminescent hydrogel based on the combination of terbium(iii) complexes and rhodamine B dye with the LAPONITE® nanoclay.
