Multispectral harvesting rare-earth oxysulphide based highly efficient transparent luminescent solar concentrator

New Multicolor Tungstate-Molybdate Microphosphors as an Alternative to LED Components

Due to the ongoing need to create phosphors with the appropriate emission color for the production of light emitting diodes, we decided to synthesize a series of multicolour microphosphors with tunable visible emissions, depending on the composition of dopant ions. In this work, we investigated the structure, morphology, and luminescent properties of new molybdate-tungstate phosphors co-doped with Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions. The conventional high temperature solid state method was used to prepare a series of CaMoyW1-yO4:Eu3+x/Tb3+1-x materials. In order to obtain phosphors with the most promising luminescent properties, the experiment was planned by taking into account the different composition of the matrix and the concentration of the particular dopant ions (Eu3+x/Tb3+1-x, x = 0.001, 0.003, 0.005, 0.007, 0.009). As a result, luminescent materials were obtained with a pure tetragonal crystal structure, the space group of I41/a, confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The size and shape of the particles obtained from the materials were analyzed based on scanning electron microscopy images. Luminescence spectroscopy (excitation and emission spectra, decay lifetimes) was utilized to characterize the luminescence properties of the as-prepared phosphors. The color change of the emission from green-yellow to orange-red was confirmed using the 1931 Comission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates and color correlated temperature (CCT).

Photon Upconversion for Photovoltaics and Photocatalysis: A Critical Review

Opportunities for enhancing solar energy harvesting using photon upconversion are reviewed. The increasing prominence of bifacial solar cells is an enabling factor for the implementation of upconversion, however, when the realistic constraints of current best-performing silicon devices are considered, many challenges remain before silicon photovoltaics operating under nonconcentrated sunlight can be enhanced via lanthanide-based upconversion. A photophysical model reveals that >1-2 orders of magnitude increase in the intermediate state lifetime, energy transfer rate, or generation rate would be needed before such solar upconversion could start to become efficient. Methods to increase the generation rate such as the use of cosensitizers to expand the absorption range and the use of plasmonics or photonic structures are reviewed. The opportunities and challenges for these approaches (or combinations thereof) to achieve efficient solar upconversion are discussed. The opportunity for enhancing the performance of technologies such as luminescent solar concentrators by combining upconversion together with micro-optics is also reviewed. Triplet-triplet annihilation-based upconversion is progressing steadily toward being relevant to lower-bandgap solar cells. Looking toward photocatalysis, photophysical modeling indicates that current blue-to-ultraviolet lanthanide upconversion systems are very inefficient. However, hope remains in this direction for organic upconversion enhancing the performance of visible-light-active photocatalysts.

High-Performance Luminescent Solar Concentrators Based on Poly(Cyclohexylmethacrylate) (PCHMA) Films

In this study, we report on the use of poly(cyclohexylmethacrylate) (PCHMA) as an alternative to the commonly used poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) for the design of efficient luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs). PCHMA was selected due to its less polar nature with respect to PMMA, a characteristic that was reported to be beneficial in promoting the fluorophore dispersibility in the matrix, thus maximizing the efficiency of LSCs also at high doping. In this sense, LSC thin films based on PCHMA and containing different contents of Lumogen F Red 305 (LR, 0.2–1.8 wt%) demonstrated optical efficiencies (η_opt) comprising between 9.5% and 10.0%, i.e., about 0.5–1% higher than those collected from the LR/PMMA systems. The higher LR/polymer interactions occurred using the PCHMA matrix maximized the solar harvesting characteristics of the fluorophore and limited the influence of the adverse dissipative phenomena on the fluorophore quantum efficiency. These effects were also reflected by varying the LSC film thickness and reaching maximum η_opt of about 11.5% in the case of PCHMA films of about 30 µm.
