Recent advances and emerging trends of rare-earth-ion doped spectral conversion nanomaterials in perovskite solar cells

Electron-Phonon Coupling-Mediated Ultralong Carrier Lifetime in an All-Inorganic Two-Dimensional Cs2PbI2Cl2 Perovskite: Explanation for the High Antisite Defect Tolerance

Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskite are appealing candidates for applications in optoelectronics and photovoltaics, but their energy conversion efficiency is severely limited by nonradiative electron-hole recombination. In most investigations, point defects with deep defect levels and deep charge-state transition levels in the band gap are treated as the carrier recombination centers. For the all-inorganic 2D Css 2PbI2Cl2, the IPb antisite defect is the most likely to form and cause nonradiative electron-hole recombination. By using density functional theory and ab initio nonradiative molecular dynamics calculations, we found that the IPb defect can introduce the deep acceptor and donor levels into the band gap. Because electron-phonon coupling gives rise to weak nonadiabatic coupling and rapid loss of electronic coherence, those levels lead to a reduction of the carrier loss and the prolongation of the excited-state carrier lifetime, thereby enhancing the photoelectric and defect tolerance properties of the Cs2PbI2Cl2 material. These results could deepen the understanding of the chemistry of defects and carrier dynamics in perovskite materials.

Rapid synthesis of phosphor-glass composites in seconds based on particle self-stabilization

Phosphor-glass composites (PGC) are excellent candidates for highly efficient and stable photonic converters; however, their synthesis generally requires harsh procedures and long time, resulting in additional performance loss and energy consumption. Here we develop a rapid synthetic route to PGC within about 10 seconds, which enables uniform dispersion of Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ (YAG:Ce) phosphor particles through a particle self-stabilization model in molten tellurite glass. Thanks for good wettability between YAG:Ce micro-particles and tellurite glass melt, it creates an energy barrier of 6.94 × 105 zJ to prevent atomic-scale contact and sintering of particles in the melt. This in turn allows the generation of YAG:Ce-based PGC as attractive emitters with high quantum efficiency (98.4%) and absorption coefficient (86.8%) that can produce bright white light with luminous flux of 1227 lm and luminous efficiency of 276 lm W-1 under blue laser driving. This work shows a generalizable synthetic strategy for the development of functional glass composites.

Magnetic Field-Assisted Interface Embedding Strategy to Construct 2D/3D Composite Structure for Stable Perovskite Solar Cells with Efficiency Over 24

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on 2D/3D composite structure have shown enormous potential to combine high efficiency of 3D perovskite with high stability of 2D perovskite. However, there are still substantial non-radiative losses produced from trap states at grain boundaries or on the surface of conventional 2D/3D composite structure perovskite film, which limits device performance and stability. In this work, a multifunctional magnetic field-assisted interfacial embedding strategy is developed to construct 2D/3D composite structure. The composite structure not only improves crystallinity and passivates defects of perovskite layer, but also can efficiently promote vertical hole transport and provide lateral barrier effect. Meanwhile, the composite structure also forms a good surface and internal encapsulation of 3D perovskite to inhibit water diffusion. As a result, the multifunctional effect effectively improves open-circuit voltage and fill factor, reaching maximum values of 1.246 V and 81.36%, respectively, and finally achieves power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.21%. The unencapsulated devices also demonstrate highly improved long-term stability and humidity stability. Furthermore, an augmented performance of 21.23% is achieved, which is the highest PCE of flexible device based on 2D/3D composite perovskite films coupled with the best mechanical stability due to the 2D/3D alternating structure.

Engineering of Hole Transporting Interface by Incorporating the Atomic-Precision Ag6 Nanoclusters for High-Efficiency Blue Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Properties of the underlying hole transport layer (HTL) play a crucial role in determining the optoelectronic performance of perovskite light-emitting devices (PeLEDs). However, endowing the current HTL system with a deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level concurrent with high hole mobility is still a big challenge, in particular being an open constraint toward high-efficiency blue PeLEDs. In this regard, employing the poly(9-vinylcarbazole) as a model, we perform efficient incorporation of the atomic-precision metal nanoclusters (NCs), [Ag₆PL₆, PL = (S)-4-phenylthiazolidine-2-thione], to achieve significant tailoring in both HOMO energy level and hole mobility. As a result, the as-modified PeLEDs exhibit an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 14.29% at 488 nm. The presented study exemplifies the success of metal NC involved HTL engineering and offers a simple yet effective additive strategy to settle the blue PeLED HTL dilemma, which paves the way for the fabrication of highly efficient blue PeLEDs.

Synergistic regulation effect of magnesium and acetate ions on structural rigidity for synthesizing an efficient and robust CsPbI3 perovskite toward red light-emitting devices

The structure of CsPbI₃ nanocrystals (NCs) with excellent photoelectric properties easily collapses, which hinders their application in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Herein, we accomplished the synthesis of efficient and stable CsPbI₃ NCs by regulating structural rigidity under the synergistic effect of Mg²⁺ and AcO^- ions. The introduced AcO^- and Mg²⁺ ions increase surface steric hindrance and defect formation energy, which enhances the structural rigidity of the perovskite. As a result, the CsPbI₃ NCs display an outstanding photoluminescence quantum yield of 95.7%, in conjunction with reduced defect state density, balanced carrier injection, and distinguished conductivity. Remarkably, the modified CsPbI₃ NCs exhibit excellent stability under ambient conditions for 180 days and can even survive when the temperature reaches 150 °C. Given their enhanced structural rigidity, LEDs made from these modified CsPbI₃ NCs exhibit a maximum luminance and an EQE of 3281 cd m^-2 and 13.2%, respectively, which are significantly improved compared with those of unmodified CsPbI₃ NC LEDs.

Cesium acetate-assisted crystallization for high-performance inverted CsPbI3perovskite solar cells

Efficient inverted (p-i-n) type CsPbI₃perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have revealed promising applications due to their excellent thermal and photostability. Regulating the nucleation and crystallization of perovskite film is an important route to improving the performance of CsPbI₃PSCs. Herein, we explored cesium acetate (CsAc) as additive to manipulate the crystallization process of CsPbI₃perovskite films. By involving in the intermediate phase DMA_1-xCs_xPbI_3-yAc_yof perovskite, the pseudo-halide acetate (Ac^-) can retard the ion exchange reaction between DMA⁺and Cs⁺, leading to a perovskite with dense morphology, low defect density, and a long carrier lifetime. As a result, the optimal CsPbI₃PSCs yielded a high power conversion efficiency of 18.3%. Moreover, the encapsulated devices showed excellent operational stability and the devices retained their initial performance following 500 h of operation at the maximum power point under one-sun illumination in ambient conditions.

Carbon-Based Nanomaterials for Sustainable Agriculture: Their Application as Light Converters, Nanosensors, and Delivery Tools

Nano-enabled agriculture is now receiving increasing attentions. Among the used nanomaterials, carbon-based nanomaterials are good candidates for sustainable agriculture. Previous review papers about the role of carbon-based nanomaterials in agriculture are either focused on one type of carbon-based nanomaterial or lack systematic discussion of the potential wide applications in agriculture. In this review, different types of carbon-based nanomaterials and their applications in light converters, nanosensors, and delivery tools in agriculture are summarized. Possible knowledge gaps are discussed. Overall, this review helps to better understand the role and the potential of carbon-based nanomaterials for nano-enabled agriculture.
