Understanding ultra-dispersed CeO modified iridium clusters as bifunction electrocatalyst for high-efficiency water splitting in acid electrolytes

Ir-Doped Core-Shell Hollow Heterogeneous Nanospindles for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

By utilizing Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials as a base, constructing electrocatalysts with heterogeneous structures offers advantages for catalyzing water splitting. In this study, a hollow heterogeneous nanocatalyst, Ir-MIL-88A@NiFe-LDHs, was prepared by growing a layered double hydroxides (LDHs) shell on MIL-88A substrate. The catalyst shows excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in a 1.0 M KOH solution, requiring only 217 mV overpotential to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with a Tafel slope of 62.18 mV dec-1, indicating significant electrocatalytic performance and reaction kinetics characteristics. Furthermore, long-term OER testing also demonstrates the catalyst's outstanding stability. Emphasizing the interfacial interaction between MOF and LDHs, as well as the synergistic effect among Ni, Fe, and Ir elements, the study highlights how these factors collaboratively control the local electronic structure of the hollow Ir-MIL-88A@NiFe-LDHs, resulting in an efficient MOF-derived electrocatalyst.

Nanocomposite Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reactions (HERs) for Sustainable and Efficient Hydrogen Energy-Future Prospects

Hydrogen is considered a good clean and renewable energy substitute for fossil fuels. The major obstacle facing hydrogen energy is its efficacy in meeting its commercial-scale demand. One of the most promising pathways for efficient hydrogen production is through water-splitting electrolysis. This requires the development of active, stable, and low-cost catalysts or electrocatalysts to achieve optimized electrocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting. The objective of this review is to survey the activity, stability, and efficiency of various electrocatalysts involved in water splitting. The status quo of noble-metal- and non-noble-metal-based nano-electrocatalysts has been specifically discussed. Various composites and nanocomposite electrocatalysts that have significantly impacted electrocatalytic HERs have been discussed. New strategies and insights in exploring nanocomposite-based electrocatalysts and utilizing other new age nanomaterial options that will profoundly enhance the electrocatalytic activity and stability of HERs have been highlighted. Recommendations on future directions and deliberations for extrapolating information have been projected.

Recent Advances Regarding Precious Metal-Based Electrocatalysts for Acidic Water Splitting

Electrochemical water splitting has wide applicability in preparing high-density green energy. The Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis system is a promising technique for the generation of hydrogen due to its high electrolytic efficiency, safety and reliability, compactness, and quick response to renewable energy sources. However, the instability of catalysts for electrochemical water splitting under operating conditions limits their practical applications. Until now, only precious metal-based materials have met the requirements for rigorous long-term stability and high catalytic activity under acid conditions. In this review, the recent progress made in this regard is presented and analyzed to clarify the role of precious metals in the promotion of the electrolytic decomposition of water. Reducing precious metal loading, enhancing catalytic activity, and improving catalytic lifetime are crucial directions for developing a new generation of PEM water electrolysis catalysts. A summary of the synthesis of high-performance catalysts based on precious metals and an analysis of the factors affecting catalytic performance were derived from a recent investigation. Finally, we present the remaining challenges and future perspectives as guidelines for practical use.
