Selective conversion of furfuryl alcohol to 2-methylfuran over nanosilica supported Au:Pd bimetallic catalysts at room temperature

Highly efficient catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural over defect-rich amphoteric ZrO2 with abundant surface acid-base sites

Currently, the catalytic transformation and utilization of biomass-derived compounds are of great importance to the alleviation of environmental problems and sustainable development. Among them, furfural alcohol derived from biomass resources has been found to be one of the most prospective biomass platforms for high-value chemicals and biofuels. Herein, high-surface-area ZrO₂ with abundant oxygen defects and surface acid-base sites was synthesized and used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural into furfural alcohol using alcohol as a hydrogen donor. The as-synthesized ZrO₂ exhibited excellent catalytic performance with 98.2% FA conversion and 97.1% FOL selectivity, even comparable with that of a homogeneous Lewis acid catalyst. A series of characterization studies and experimental results revealed that acid sites on the surface of ZrO₂ could adsorb and activate the C[double bond, length as m-dash]O bond in furfural and base sites could facilitate the formation of alkoxide species. The synergistic effect of surface acid-base sites affords a harmonious environment for the reaction, which is crucial for catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural with high efficiency. Furthermore, the as-prepared ZrO₂ catalyst also exhibited a potential application for the efficient catalytic transfer hydrogenation of a series of biomass-derived carbonyl compounds.

Molybdenum and Nickel Nanoparticles Synthesis by Laser Ablation towards the Preparation of a Hydrodesulfurization Catalyst

A clean straightforward laser ablation method in deionized (DI) water is reported for the synthesis of Molybdenum (Mo) and Nickel (Ni) nanoparticles (NPs). The structural, morphological, and optical properties of the as-synthesized nanoparticles were investigated. Particle size was estimated to be less than 10 nm, the UV–vis spectra of the samples show the formation of H2MoO4 and NiO. The XRD results for the Ni sample show the presence of two phases, cubic nickel oxide, and an fcc metallic nickel phase, indicating the possible formation of Ni/NiO compound. The nanoparticles synthesized were used as precursors in the production of a NiMo/γ-Al2O3 catalyst. The textural and structural properties, chemical composition, and catalytic performance in a hydrodesulfurization (HDS) reaction are reported. The textural and structural properties results show the lack of pore-blocking due to the small sizes and the distribution of the metallic nanoparticles on the support. Chemical composition measured by XPS shows a ratio Ni/Mo of 1.34. Therefore, possibly Ni was deposited on Mo covering part of its active area, occupying active sites of Mo, removing its effective surface and resulting in a relatively low conversion of DBT (17%). A lower Ni/Mo ratio is required to improve the model system, which could be achieved by changing parameters at the production of the nanoparticles. The model system can also be further tuned by changing the size of the nanoparticles.

Bimetallic Pd-Au/SiO2 Catalysts for Reduction of Furfural in Water

Catalytic systems based on bimetallic Pd-Au particles deposited on SiO2 were prepared by ultrasonically assisted water impregnation and used in the hydrogenation of furfural obtained by the acidic hydrolysis of waste biomass (brewery’s spent grain) in aqueous phase. Pd-Au/SiO2 catalysts containing 50 g of Pd and 2–100 g of Au per 1 kg of catalyst were characterized by high activity in the studied process and, depending on the Pd/Au ratio, selectivity to 2-methyloxolan-2-ol. The modification of 5%Pd/SiO2 by Au leads to the formation of dispersed Au-Pd solid solution phases, which was confirmed by XRD, XPS, ToF-SIMS, SEM-EDS, and H2-TPR techniques. The effect of dilution of surface palladium by gold atoms is probably crucial for modification of the reaction mechanism and formation of 2-methyloxolan-2-ol as the main product.
