Sennoside A drug capped biogenic fabrication of silver nanoparticles and their antibacterial and antifungal activities

Saussurea costus extract as bio mediator in synthesis iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) and their antimicrobial ability

Saussurea costus is from medicinal plants and have therapeutic properties that were recorded in a variety of medical functions. The usage of biomaterials in the synthesis of nanoparticles is an essential strategy in green nanotechnology. Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) were composed in the stage of (2:1, FeCl2: FeCl3) solution by using the aqueous extract of Saussurea costus peel in an eco-friendly method to evaluate their antimicrobial property. The properties of the obtained IONPs were evaluated using a scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscope. The mean size of IONPs discovered by Zetasizer varies between 100 and 300 nm, with a mean particle size of 295 nm. The morphology of IONPs (γ-Fe2O3) was determined to be nearly spherical and prismatic-curved. Moreover, the antimicrobial property of IONPs was assessed with nine pathogenic microbes, revealing that the nanoparticles have antimicrobial activities with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Shigella sp., Staphylococcus sp. and Aspergillus niger, with possible applications in the therapeutic and biomedical fields.

Herbal Medicines for Constipation and Phytochemical Comparison of Active Components

Constipation is a very common medical condition worldwide, negatively affecting patients' quality of life and healthcare system. Rhubarb, senna leaf, and aloe are three frequently used herbal medications for achieving regular bowel movement. Rhubarb is also a key ingredient in MaZiRenWan, a Chinese medicine formula used every so often for constipation in oriental countries. We reviewed and summarized the major chemical components from these three botanicals, including dianthrones, anthraquinone glycosides, free anthraquinones, and other polyphenols. The purgative actions of these constituents have been compared. Anthraquinone, especially its dianthrone compounds such as sennoside A and sennoside B, as natural stimulant laxatives, possesses significant effects to promote gastrointestinal motility and relieve functional constipation. Furthermore, the safety, reported side effects, and other benefits of anthraquinone compounds are presented. To date, many anti-constipation natural products are being used but their research is relatively limited, and thus, more investigations in this field are indeed needed.

Crawling and adhesion behavior of Halamphora sp. based on different parts of Folium Sennae-like film: Evaluation of analytical methods for anti-diatom experimental results

Anti-diatom testing is a basic method to evaluate the anti-fouling performance of coatings. Many existing results of anti-diatom performances are evaluated based on their attachment number or coverage area, ignoring the influence of the crawling and adhesion behavior of diatoms on the analysis results. Here, a Folium Sennae-like film with multiple structural units was prepared by considering the influence of diatom attachment behaviors on the analysis results. The anti-diatom performances of different parts (divided and called four parts: edge, surface, cross striation, and vertical pattern) on the Folium Sennae-like film were evaluated using the counting and area methods. Obviously, the anti-diatom performance of the Folium Sennae-like film was superior to that of epoxy resin without structure. Under equal areas, the average numbers of diatoms on the cross striation and the vertical pattern were similar to the surface. It was found that the attachment behavior of Halamphora sp. is affected by microstructure units, rather than the combined structure of which the scale is much larger than that of diatoms. Meanwhile, the average attachment area for the unit number of diatoms was calculated. The diatom attachment area without microstructure, surface, cross striation, or vertical pattern was 81.751, 106.950, 73.904, and 84.376 μm², respectively. Moreover, the static and dynamic motion behaviors of Halamphora sp. were studied, and the theory for Halamphora sp. attachment was modeled in three dimensions. The variable morphology of Halamphora sp. lead to inaccurate results for diatom analyses based on the counting and area methods, which is summarized here. This study discusses the evaluation method of coatings by anti-diatom performance, further promoting the research of diatoms in the field of antifouling.

Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Metabolism of Sennoside A, A Medicinal Plant-Derived Natural Compound

Sennoside A (SA) is a natural dianthrone glycoside mainly from medicinal plants of Senna and Rhubarb, and used as a folk traditional irritant laxative and slimming health food. Accumulating evidences suggest that SA possesses numerous pharmacological properties, such as laxative, anti-obesity, hypoglycemic, hepatoprotective, anti-fibrotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-neurodegenerative activities. These pharmacological effects lay the foundation for its potential application in treating a variety of diseases. However, numerous published studies suggest that a long-term use of SA in large doses may have some adverse effects, including the occurrence of melanosis coli and carcinogenesis of colon cancer, thereby limiting its clinical use. It remains to be established whether SA or its metabolites are responsible for the pharmacological and toxicity effects. In this review, the latest advances in the pharmacology, toxicology, and metabolism of SA were summarizedbased on its biological characteristics and mechanism.

Employment of Cassia angustifolia leaf extract for zinc nanoparticles fabrication and their antibacterial and cytotoxicity

The plant Cassia angustifolia belongs to Saudi Arabia, which is one of the native places and now cultured throughout the global countries. Medical care in the Arab world is an essential outlet for medicinal plants, both because they are crucial elements for prophetic medicine and due to their lengthy background in the Middle East. C.angustifolia is one of the medicinal plants used in the Saudi Arabia. The usage of plant extracts for synthesizing nanoparticles is conducive to other biological material, since it avoids the lengthy phase of cell culture maintenance. Silver nanoparticles attract further attention due to their strong conductivity, stability and antimicrobial activity across different metal nanoparticles. The present study was designed in the Saudi C. angustifolia leaves with the zinc synthesis of nanoparticles and its antibacterial ability. The plant extracts of C. angustifolia was used for synthesis of zinc nanoparticles, antimicrobial activities against bacterial strains have been tested along with transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV spectroscopy and antimicrobial activities have been conducted. This study showed that silver ions may be transferred from the plant extract to silver nanoparticles. AgNPs biogenic capacity to antibacterial with lovo cell with IC50 ranged from 33.5 ± 0.2 μg/mL demonstrated strong antibacterial capacity to antibody. The overall absorption value for the extract was between 420 and 440 nm and the color transition to green was the plasma absorption of the AgNPs. TEM results was showed in 200,000 magnification. The uniqueness of the current study is that Cassia angustifolia leaf extract from Saudi Arabia was used to prepare the metallic nanoparticles. Additionally, ZnCl2 may also be used as nanoparticles of mineral salt and zinc, which, since their application has been confirmed, are antimicrobial.

Phytomediated Photo-Induced Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Matricaria chamomilla L. and Its Catalytic Activity against Rhodamine B

The bio-fabrication of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was carried out through the facile green route, using the aqueous extract of Matricaria chamomilla L. Herein, we have developed a cost-efficient, ecofriendly, and photo-induced method for the biomolecule-assisted synthesis of AgNPs using an aqueous extract of Matricaria chamomilla L. as a bio-reducing and capping/stabilizing agent. The biomolecule-capped AgNPs were confirmed from the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band at λmax = 450 nm using a UV-visible spectrometer. The stability of the AgNPs was confirmed by recording the UV-visible spectra for a more extended period, and no precipitation was observed in the sol. The morphology and structure of photo-induced biomolecule-capped AgNPs were characterized by different microscopic and spectroscopy techniques such as TEM, SEM, EDX, XRD, and FTIR analysis. The role of phytochemicals as reducing and stabilizing agents was confirmed by comparative FTIR analysis of the AgNPs and pure Matricaria chamomilla L. aqueous extract. The obtained result shows that the AgNPs are mostly spherical morphology with an average size of about 26 nm. Furthermore, the thermal stability of biomolecule-capped AgNPs was examined by TGA-DTG analysis that showed a weight loss of approximately 36.63% up to 800 °C. Moreover, the potential photocatalytic activity of photo-induced AgNPs against Rhodamine B (RB) was examined in the presence of UV light irradiation. The catalyst reusability, the effect of catalyst dosage and initial dye concentration, and the effect of the temperature and pH of the reaction medium were also assessed.
