Abstract
The intestinal barrier function is a critical defense mechanism in the human body, serving as both the primary target and initiating organ in cases of sepsis. Preserving the integrity of this barrier is essential for preventing complications and diseases, including sepsis and mortality. Despite this importance, the impact of resveratrol on intestinal barrier function remains unclear. Thus, this study aims to explore the potential beneficial effects of resveratrol on maintaining intestinal barrier function. Fifteen male Sprague Dawley rats, weighing between 180 g and 220 g, were randomly assigned to one of three groups: the control group (Con), the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) group, and the resveratrol (RSV) group. The resveratrol group received an intravenous administration of resveratrol at a dosage of 8 mg/kg, 10 min prior to lipopolysaccharide treatment. Each group comprised five rats. Various techniques including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), hematoxylin and eosin staining (HE), periodic acid Schiff (PAS) staining, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Western blot analysis (WB), and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) were utilized to assess differences in inflammatory cytokine expression, histopathological changes, apoptosis, tight junction (TJ) protein, and the TLR4/MyD88/NF-кB signaling pathways. Resveratrol exhibited anti-inflammatory effects by decreasing levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, interleukin(IL)-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, while increasing interleukin (IL)-10. Additionally, in rats treated with resveratrol, there was a reduction in the expression of apoptosis-associated proteins Bax and Caspase-3. Resveratrol also significantly increased the expression of intestinal tight junction proteins (TJ), and decreased the levels of intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP) and D-lactic acid (D-LA). Furthermore, the expression of proteins in the related signaling pathways TLR4, MyD88, and NF-κB was decreased. Resveratrol has been shown to reduce the expression of intestinal apoptotic proteins, enhance the expression of intestinal tight junction proteins, and inhibit the inflammatory response mediated by the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway, thereby alleviating LPS-induced septic intestinal injury.

Abstract
Sepsis and septic shock are still one of the most important medical challenges. Sepsis is an extreme and uncontrolled response of the innate immune system to invading pathogenesis. Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxytrans-stilbene), is a phenolic and non-flavonoid compound naturally produced by some plants and fruits. The object of the current study is to systematically review the impacts of resveratrol and its mechanisms of function in the management of sepsis and its related complications. The guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statements were applied to perform the study (PROSPERO: CRD42021289357). We searched Embase, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Science Direct, PubMed, ProQuest, and Scopus databases up to January 2023 by using the relevant keywords. Study criteria were met by 72 out of 1415 articles screened. The results of this systematic review depict that resveratrol can reduces the complications of sepsis by affecting inflammatory pathways, oxidative stress, and modulating immune responses. Future human randomized clinical trials are necessary due to the promising therapeutic effects of resveratrol on sepsis complications and the lack of clinical trials in this regard.

Abstract
Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction syndrome caused by host response disorders due to infection or infectious factors and is a common complication of patients with clinical trauma, burns, and infection. Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol compound that is a SIRT-1 activator with anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal inhibitory abilities as well as cardiovascular and anti-tumor protective effects. In recent years, some scholars have applied resveratrol in animal models of sepsis and found that it has an organ protective effect and can improve the survival time and reduce the mortality of animals with sepsis. In this study, Medline (Pubmed), embase, and other databases were searched to retrieve literature published in 2021 using the keywords “resveratrol” and “sepsis,” and then the potential of resveratrol for the treatment of sepsis was reviewed and prospected to provide some basis for future clinical research.

Abstract
Background Sepsis combined with myocardial injury is an important cause of septic shock and multiple organ failure. However, the molecular mechanism of sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction has not yet been thoroughly studied. Resveratrol has been an important research topic due its organ-protection function, but the specific mechanism is unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the mechanism of organ injury in sepsis and to investigate the molecular mechanism of resveratrol in myocardial protection in sepsis. Material/Methods A classical Sprague-Dawley rat model of sepsis peritonitis was constructed for further experiments. The PI3K inhibitor LY294002 and resveratrol were used to intervene in a rat model of cardiomyopathy. HE staining was used to observe pathological changes. Cardiomyocyte apoptosis was detected by TUNEL assay. Western blot analysis was used to detect the level of maker proteins. Results The PI3K inhibitors could promote cardiac abnormalities and apoptosis, but resveratrol showed the opposite effect. The upregulation function of the PI3K inhibitor on the expression of NF-κB, IL-6, IL-1β, and TLR4 in LPS rats was not obvious, but the expression of TNF-α in LPS+LY294002 rats was increased by 22.85% compared with that in LPS rats (P<0.05). Compared with the LPS group, the expression of NF-κB, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, and TLR4 in the LPS+resveratrol group was decreased. The expression of p-PI3K, p-AKT, and p-mTOR in LPS+LY294002 was reduced. The expression p-PI3K, p-AKT, and p-mTOR in the myocardium of the LPS+resveratrol group was increased. Conclusions Resveratrol can protect the myocardium in sepsis by activating the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway and inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway and related inflammatory factors.

Abstract
Resveratrol, a polyphenol phytoalexine, has been shown to play a neuroprotective role in the neurodegenerative process in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and improve memory function in dementia. However, the in vivo effect of resveratrol in normal aging models of learning and memory has not yet been evaluated. Therefore, the present neurobehavioral study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of resveratrol on cognitive impairment induced by aging in passive avoidance and Morris water maze (MWM) tests. Male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups: young control (4month), young resveratrol (4month+RESV), old control (24month) and old resveratrol (24month+RESV). Resveratrol (50mg/kg/day) was given to the 4month+RESV and 24month+RESV groups orally for 12weeks. There was no significant difference between the groups for the first day of latency, while in aged rats, the second day of latency was significantly shortened compared to the young group in the passive avoidance test (p<0.05). Additionally, in the MWM test, the results showed a decrease in the time spent in the escape platform's quadrant in the probe test in aged rats (p<0.05). The administration of resveratrol at 50mg/kg/day increased the retention scores in the passive avoidance test and the time spent in the escape platform's quadrant in the MWM task (p<0.05). Furthermore resveratrol attenuated the protein levels of TNFα and IL1β in the 24-month group. These findings indicate that aging impairs emotional and spatial learning-memory and resveratrol reverses the effect of age-related learning and memory impairment. The results of this study suggest that resveratrol is effective in preventing cognitive deficit in aged rats by inhibiting the production of inflammatory cytokines.

Abstract
A number of studies have recently focused on the neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects of resveratrol. In prior studies, we described its beneficial effects on scopolamine-induced learning deficits in rats. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of resveratrol on emotional and spatial cognitive functions, neurotropic factor expression, and plasma levels of proinflammatory cytokines in rats exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS), which is known to induce cognitive deficits. Resveratrol (5 or 20mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally for 35 days. Rats in the CUMS group and in the 5mg/kg resveratrol+CUMS group performed poorly in tasks designed to assess emotional and spatial learning and memory. The 20mg/kg resveratrol+CUMS group showed improved performance compared to the CUMS group. In addition, the CUMS procedure induced lower expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and c-Fos in hippocampal CA1 and CA3 and in the amygdala of stressed rats. These effects were reversed by chronic administration of resveratrol (20mg/kg). In addition, plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-1 beta were increased by CUMS, but were restored to normal by resveratrol. These results indicate that resveratrol significantly attenuates the deficits in emotional learning and spatial memory seen in chronically stressed rats. These effects may be related to resveratrol-mediated changes in neurotrophin factor expression in hippocampus and in levels of proinflammatory cytokines in circulation.

Abstract
Through their pleiotropic actions, statins, fibrates, thiazolidinediones and resveratrol can target multiple mechanisms involved in sepsis. Their actions on mitochondrial function are of interest in a pathological state where bioenergetic failure may play a key role in the development of organ dysfunction. We review these four drug groups as potential adjunctive therapies in sepsis with a particular focus upon mitochondria. Systematic review of clinical and experimental trials was done with a literature search using the PubMed database. Search terms included statins, fibrates, thiazolidinediones, resveratrol, mitochondria, sepsis, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors, inflammation, oxidative stress and organ dysfunction. With the exception of statins, most of the compelling evidence for the use of these agents in sepsis comes from the experimental literature. The agents all exert anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, plus protective effects against mitochondrial dysfunction and stimulation of mitochondrial biogenesis. Improved outcomes (organ dysfunction, survival) have been reported in a variety of sepsis models. Notably, positive outcome effects were more commonly seen when the agents were given as pre- rather than post-treatment of sepsis. Statins, fibrates, thiazolidinediones and resveratrol prevent sepsis-induced injury to organs and organelles with outcome improvements. Their effects on mitochondrial function may be integral in offering this protection. Definitive clinical trials are needed to evaluate their utility in septic patients or those at high risk of developing sepsis.
