Abstract
Two new selenites, K2Zn3Se4O12 (compound 1) and K4Zn3V4Se2O19 (compound 2), have been successfully synthesized by solid-state reactions in vacuum tubes. Compound 1 consists of a three-dimensional (3D) framework with [SeO3] triangular pyramids and [ZnO4] tetrahedra in the monoclinic space group P21/c (No. 14). Compound 1's cut-off edge is below 344 nm, based on its UV-Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance studies, and theoretical calculations indicate a birefringence of around 0.043 at 1064 nm. The two-dimensional layer of compound 2, in contrast, is made up of [SeO3] triangular pyramids, [ZnO4] tetrahedra, and [V4O13] tetrahedra. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c (No. 15). Its UV-Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance studies demonstrate that the compound's cut-off edge is lower than 330 nm.

Abstract
Systematic studies of crystalline compounds formed in aqueous systems containing aliphatic diamines, divalent transition metal halides, and selenious acid resulted in the discovery of a large family of new complex species corresponding to several new structure types. With ethylenediamine (en), layered (enH2)[M(HSeO3)2X2] compounds are the most commonly formed species which constitute a significant contribution to the family of layered hydrogen selenites containing neutral [M(HSeO3)2] (M = Mg, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd) 2D building blocks. In contrast to some previous suggestions, piperazine (pip), as well as its homologue N-methylpiperazine, mostly give rise to quite different, sometimes more complex, structures of varied dimensionality while the (pipH2)[M(HSeO3)2X2] compounds are formed only with M = Cu and Cd. In addition, metal-, halide-, or selenium-free by-product species are observed. The SeIV can be present in a multitude of forms, including H2SeO3, HSeO3-, SeO32-, and Se2O52-, reflecting amazing adaptability to the shape of the templating cations.

Abstract
Compounds with the general formula Ln3+(SeO3)(HSeO3)·2H2O, where Ln = Sm3+, Tb3+, Nd3+ and Lu3+, are characterized by orthorhombic symmetry with space group P212121 and unit-cell parameters in the ranges a ∼ 6.473-6.999, b ∼ 6.845-7.101, c ∼ 16.242-16.426 Å. Light-purple irregularly shaped crystals of a new monoclinic polytype of neodymium selenite Nd(SeO3)(HSeO3)·2H2O have been obtained during a mild-condition hydrothermal synthesis. The monoclinic unit-cell parameters are: a = 7.0815 (2), b = 6.6996 (2), c = 16.7734 (5) Å, β = 101.256 (1)°, V = 780.48 (6) Å3; space group P21/c. The crystal structures of Nd(SeO3)(HSeO3)·2H2O polymorphs show order-disorder (OD) character and can be described using the same OD groupoid family, more precisely a family of OD structures built up from two kinds of non-polar layers (category IV). The first monoclinic maximum degree order (MDO) structure (MDO1-polytype) with space group P21/c can be obtained when the inversion centre is active in the L2n-type layers, while the second MDO structure (MDO2-polytype) is orthorhombic with space group P212121 and can be obtained when the [21--] operation is active in the L2n-type layers. The structural complexity parameters and DFT calculations of both polytypes show that the polytype structures are extremely close energy-wise and almost equally viable from the point of total energy of the structure.

Abstract
Abstract
The mixed-valent calcium oxidotellurate(IV,VI) Ca2(Te2O7) (= Ca2(TeIVTeVIO7)) and the two calcium oxidotellurate(IV) dichlorides Ca2(TeIVO3)Cl2 and Ca5(TeIVO3)4Cl2 were obtained from metal chloride salt melts. Structure determination from single crystal X-ray data revealed a unique crystal structure in each case. A common motif in the three crystal structures is the formation of a framework perforated by channels into which the stereochemically active 5s
2 electron lone pairs E of the TeIV atoms are directed. Ca2(Te2O7) belongs to category I of the Robin-Day classification of mixed-valent compounds. Its crystal structure features a double chain of condensed trigonal-pyramidal [TeIVO3] and octahedral [TeVIO6] units embedded within a framework of [CaO
x
] polyhedra (x = 7–8). The Cl atoms in the crystal structures of Ca2(TeIVO3)Cl2 and Ca5(TeIVO3)4Cl2 act as spacers between isolated trigonal-pyramidal [TeO3] units and exhibit weak interactions with the 5s
2 electron lone pairs E, with Cl⋯E distances <3.6 Å.

Abstract
Our exploration of novel inorganic solids with large birefringence in the d10 Metal-Te4+-SO42- system afforded four new sulfate tellurites, Ga2(TeO3)(SO4)(OH)2, In2(TeO3)2(SO4)(H2O), Zn4(Te3O7)2(SO4)2(H2O) and Hg3(Te3O8)(SO4). Notably, Hg3(Te3O8)(SO4) exhibits the largest birefringence at 532 nm (0.184) and 1064 nm (0.166) among the reported metal sulfate tellurites.
