Design and construction of diverse structures of coordination polymers: Photocatalytic properties

Activation of Cadmium–Imidazole Buffering Coordination Polymer by Sulfur-Doping for the Enhancement of Photocatalytic Degradation of Cationic and Anionic Dyes Under Visible Light

The buffering Cadmium–Imidazole Coordination Polymer (Cd–Im-CP) was synthesized hydrothermally from cadmium chloride and imidazole at 70 °C and then was subjected to doping- by the non-metal sulfur using Na2S solution as a novel modification strategy to produce S–Cd–Im CPs. To investigate doping nature and its effects, Cd–Im CP and S–Cd–Im CPs were characterized applying different analyses techniques, FTIR, Raman, PXRD, SEM/EDX, TGA, and UV–Vis DRS analyses. Characterizations showed the successful chemical doping of sulfur. The inclusion of sulfur within chemical CP structure caused narrowing of material’s bandgap from 4.55 and 3.4 eV to 4.25 and 2.35 eV for S–Cd–Im CPs allowing it for photoresponse towards Visible-light. Both Cd–Im CP and S–Cd–Im CPs were applied for photocatalytic degradation of the selected dyes methylene blue (MB),and methyl orange (MO) employing visible and UV irradiations considering three different initial pH levels to investigate the consequence of sulfur doping. After eliminating the photolysis effect, the best degradation by S–Cd–Im CPs was recorded for MB at initial pH 4 being 13 fold that is for Cd–Im CP. The highest apparent turnover frequencies are 1.2 × 10−3 h−1 for MB at initial pH 10 and 1.03 × 10−4 h−1 for MO at initial pH 4 are given by 10S–Cd–IM CP under Visible-light. Generally, S–Cd–Im CPs remarkably improved photocatalysis degradation of both the dyes for all initial pH levels under Visible-light.

Redox Activity of Noninnocent 2,2'-Bipyridine in Zinc Complexes: An Experimental and Theoretical Study

We report on a systematical reactivity study of β-diketiminate zinc complexes with redox-active 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy). The reaction of LZnI (L = HC[C(Me)N(2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃)]₂) with NaB(C₆F₅)₄ in the presence of bpy yielded [LZn(bpy)][B(C₆F₅)₄] (1), with bpy serving as a neutral ligand, whereas reduction reactions of LZnI with 1 or 2 equiv of KC₈ in the presence of bpy gave the radical complex LZn(bpy) (2) and [2.2.2-Cryptand-K][LZn(bpy)] (3), in which bpy either acts as a π-radical anion or a diamagnetic dianion, respectively. The paramagnetic nature of 2 was confirmed via solution magnetic susceptibility measurements, and UV-vis spectroscopy shows that 2 exhibits absorption bands typical for bpy radical species. The EPR spectra of 2 and its deuterated analog 2-d ₈ demonstrate that the spin density is localized to the bpy ligand. Density functional theoretical calculations and natural bond orbital analysis were employed to elucidate the electronic structure of complexes 1-3 and accurately reproduced the structural experimental data. It is shown that reduction of the bpy moiety results in a decrease in the β-diketiminate co-ligand bite angle and elongation of the Zn-N(β-diketiminate) bonds, which act cooperatively and in synergy with the bpy ligand by decreasing Zn-N(bpy) bond lengths to stabilize the energy of the LUMO.

Isomeric 4,2′:6′,4″- and 3,2′:6′,3″-Terpyridines with Isomeric 4′-Trifluoromethylphenyl Substituents: Effects on the Assembly of Coordination Polymers with [Cu(hfacac)2] (Hhfacac = Hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione)

The isomers 4′-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-4,2′:6′,4″-terpyridine (1), 4′-(3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-4,2′:6′,4″-terpyridine (2), 4′-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3,2′:6′,3″-terpyridine (3), and 4′-(3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3,2′:6′,3″-terpyridine (4) have been prepared and characterized. The single crystal structures of 1 and 2 were determined. The 1D-polymers [Cu2(hfacac)4(1)2]n·2nC6H4Cl2 (Hhfacac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione), [Cu(hfacac)2(2)]n·2nC6H5Me, [Cu2(hfacac)4(3)2]n·nC6H4Cl2, [Cu2(hfacac)4(3)2]n·nC6H5Cl, and [Cu(hfacac)2(4)]n·nC6H5Cl have been formed by reactions of 1, 2, 3 and 4 with [Cu(hfacac)2]·H2O under conditions of crystal growth by layering and four of these coordination polymers have been formed on a preparative scale. [Cu2(hfacac)4(1)2]n·2nC6H4Cl2 and [Cu(hfacac)2(2)]n·2nC6H5Me are zig-zag chains and the different substitution position of the CF3 group in 1 and 2 does not affect this motif. Packing of the polymer chains is governed mainly by C–F...F–C contacts, and there are no inter-polymer π-stacking interactions. The conformation of the 3,2′:6′,3″-tpy unit in [Cu2(hfacac)4(3)2]n·nC6H4Cl2 and [Cu(hfacac)2(4)]n·nC6H5Cl differs, leading to different structural motifs in the 1D-polymer backbones. In [Cu(hfacac)2(4)]n·nC6H5Cl, the peripheral 3-CF3C6H4 unit is accommodated in a pocket between two {Cu(hfacac)2} units and engages in four C–Hphenyl...F–Chfacac contacts which lock the phenylpyridine unit in a near planar conformation. In [Cu2(hfacac)4(3)2]n·nC6H4Cl2 and [Cu(hfacac)2(4)]n·nC6H5Cl, π-stacking interactions between 4′-trifluoromethylphenyl-3,2′:6′,3″-tpy domains are key packing interactions, and this contrasts with the packing of polymers incorporating 1 and 2. We use powder X-ray diffraction to demonstrate that the assemblies of the coordination polymers are reproducible, and that a switch from a 4,2′:6′,4″- to 3,2′:6′,3″-tpy metal-binding unit is accompanied by a change from dominant C–F...F–C and C–F...H–C contacts to π-stacking of arene domains between ligands 3 or 4.

Multifunctional mesoporous curcumin encapsulated iron-phenanthroline nanocluster: A new Anti-HIV agent

A new strategy to encapsulating the drug curcumin into the hydrophobic core of the iron-phenanthroline nanocomplex (NIP) and eventually its release is signified. NIP was prepared via coordinate interaction between Fe²⁺ and the lone pairs present on the N atoms of the bidentate phenanthroline ligand (spherical morphology, diameter 18.8 nm, mesoporous with pore size 2.443 nm, amorphous). Thereafter, curcumin was successfully encapsulated (NCIP) in NIP, resulting in its enhanced stability (spherical morphology, diameter 46.8 nm). The nanocomplex NIP was used for drug delivery applications. We evaluated the anti-HIV effects of NCIP in vitro on cultures of HIV infected human microglia. The treatment of HIV-1 infected microglia with NCIP significantly decreased the expression of HIV-p24 by 41% and pro-inflammatory mediators TNF-α, IL-8 and NO by 61.2%, 41% and 50.2%, respectively, compared to NIP. Flow cytometry data also support the decrease in TNF-α and IL-8 expression in case of NCIP. NCIP induced antioxidative effects by increasing the gene expression of catalase (CAT) and simulatenously decreasing hemeoxygenase-1 (HMOX-1) gene expression, thereby maintaining homeostasis which reduces neuroinflammation. These results support our premise that NCIP may be a significant adjuvant when used with traditional anti-retroviral regimens and may ameliorate HIV-1 associated neurotoxicity.

Hydrothermal assembly, structures, topologies, luminescence, and magnetism of a novel series of coordination polymers driven by a trifunctional nicotinic acid building block

In this work, a trifunctional N,O-building block, 5-(4-carboxyphenoxy)nicotinic acid (H₂cpna), that combines three distinct types of functional groups (COOH, N-pyridyl, and O-ether) was used for the hydrothermal assembly of thirteen new coordination compounds: [Co(μ₃-Hcpna)₂]_n (1), [Mn(μ₄-cpna)(H₂O)]_n (2), [Mn(μ₄-cpna)(H₂O)₂]_n (3), [Mn(μ-cpna)(2,2'-bipy)(H₂O)₂]_n (4), {[Ni(μ₃-cpna)(2,2'-bipy)(H₂O)]₂·H₂O}_n (5), {[Cd(μ₃-cpna)(2,2'-bipy)]·2H₂O}_n (6), [Zn₂(μ-cpna)₂(2,2'-bipy)₂] (7), [Cu(μ-cpna)(2,2'-bipy)(H₂O)]_n (8), {[Mn(μ-cpna)(phen)₂]·6H₂O}_n (9), {[Ni(μ₃-cpna)(phen)(H₂O)]·H₂O}_n (10), [Zn₂(μ-cpna)₂(phen)₂] (11), {[Pb(μ₃-cpna)(phen)]·H₂O}_n (12), and [Ni(μ₃-cpna)(4,4'-bipy)_0.5(H₂O)]_n (13). These products were synthesized from the corresponding metal(ii) chlorides, H₂cpna, NaOH, and optional N-donor supporting ligands or templates {bis(4-pyridyl)amine (bpa), 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bipy), 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bipy), or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen)}. Products 1-13 were characterized in the solid state by standard methods, including elemental and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), IR spectroscopy, and powder (PXRD) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structures of 1-13 feature distinct structural types, namely the 3D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs 1-3), the 2D coordination polymers (5, 6, 10, 12, and 13), the 1D coordination polymers (4, 8, and 9), and the 0D discrete cyclic dimers (7 and 11). Such a wide structural diversity of 1-13 is driven by various factors, including the type of the metal(ii) node, the deprotonation degree of H₂cpna, and/or the type of supporting ligand or template. Notably, an addition of bpa can tune the structure of MOF 3 by the template effect. Topological classification of underlying metal-organic networks was performed, leading to several distinct topological nets: rtl (in 1), hxg-d-4-C2/m (in 2), sra (in 3), 2C1 (in 4, 8 and 9), fes (in 5, 10, and 12), hcb (in 6), and 3,4L83 (in 13). The magnetic behavior of 1-5, 8-10, and 13 was studied and theoretically modeled, disclosing antiferromagnetic interactions. The luminescence behavior of 6, 7, 11, and 12 was also investigated.

Fluorescence detection of Mn2+, Cr2O72−and nitroexplosives and photocatalytic degradation of methyl violet and rhodamine B based on two stable metal–organic frameworks

Two new MOFs show 3D 2-fold interpenetrating 4-connected networks and could be a prospective candidate for developing the luminescence sensors and the photocatalysis due to their highly stabilities.
