Carbon dioxide separation and capture by adsorption: a review

Rising adverse impact of climate change caused by anthropogenic activities is calling for advanced methods to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Here, we review adsorption technologies for carbon dioxide capture with focus on materials, techniques, and processes, additive manufacturing, direct air capture, machine learning, life cycle assessment, commercialization and scale-up.

Lipase immobilization on a novel class of Zr-MOF/electrospun nanofibrous polymers: Biochemical characterization and efficient biodiesel production

In this study, due to the favorable properties of MOF compounds and fibrous materials, new nanostructures of Zr-MOF/PVP nanofibrous composites were synthesized by electrospinning procedure. The related features of these samples were characterized by relevant analyzes, including SEM, BET surface area analysis, XRD, and FTIR spectroscopy. The final product showed significant properties such as small particle size distribution, large surface area, and high crystallinity. This strategy for producing these nanostructures could lead to new compounds as novel alternative materials for biological applications. Lipase MG10 was successfully immobilized on the mentioned nanofibrous composites and biochemically characterized. The lipase activity of free and immobilized lipases was considered by measuring the absorbance of pNPP (500 μM in 40 mM Tris/HCl buffer, pH 7.8, and 0.01% Triton X100) at 37 °C for 30 min. Different concentrations of glutaraldehyde, different crosslinking times, different times of immobilization, different enzyme loading, and different pH values have been optimized. Results showed that the optimized immobilization condition was achieved in 2.5% glutaraldehyde, after 2 h of crosslinking time, after 6 h immobilization time, using 180 mg protein/g support at pH 9.0. The immobilized enzyme was also totally stable after 180 min incubation at 60 °C. The free enzyme showed the maximum activity at pH 9.0, but the optimal pH of the immobilized lipase was shifted about 1.5 pH units to the alkaline area. The immobilized lipase showed about 2.7 folds (78%) higher stability than the free enzyme at 50 °C. Some divalent metal ions, including Cu²⁺ (22%), Co²⁺ (37%), Mg²⁺ (12%), Hg²⁺ (11%), and Mn²⁺ (17%) enhanced the enzyme activity of immobilized enzyme. The maximum biodiesel production (27%) from R. communis oil was obtained after 18 h of incubation by lipase MG10. The immobilized lipase displayed high potency in biodiesel production, about 83% after 12 h of incubation. These results indicated the high potency of Zr-MOF/PVP nanofibrous composites for efficient lipase immobilization.

Nanomaterials for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Head and Neck Cancers: A Review

Head and neck cancer (HNC) is a category of cancers that typically arise from the nose-, mouth-, and throat-lining squamous cells. The later stage of HNC diagnosis significantly affects the patient's survival rate. This makes it mandatory to diagnose this cancer with a suitable biomarker and imaging techniques at the earlier stages of growth. There are limitations to traditional technologies for early detection of HNC. Furthermore, the use of nanocarriers for delivering chemo-, radio-, and phototherapeutic drugs represents a promising approach for improving the outcome of HNC treatments. Several studies with nanostructures focus on the development of a targeted and sustained release of anticancer molecules with reduced side effects. Besides, nanovehicles could allow co-delivering of anticancer drugs for synergistic activity to counteract chemo- or radioresistance. Additionally, a new generation of smart nanomaterials with stimuli-responsive properties have been developed to distinguish between unique tumor conditions and healthy tissue. In this light, the present article reviews the mechanisms used by different nanostructures (metallic and metal oxide nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles, quantum dots, liposomes, nanomicelles, etc.) to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment, provides an up-to-date picture of the state of the art in this field, and highlights the major challenges for future improvements.

Recent advances in templated synthesis of metal nanoclusters and their applications in biosensing, bioimaging and theranostics

As a kind of promising nanomaterials, metal nanoclusters (MNCs) generally composed of several to hundreds of metal atoms have received increasing interest owing to their unique properties, such as ultrasmall size (<2 nm), fascinating physical and chemical properties, and so on. Recently, template-assisted synthesis of MNCs (e.g., Au, Ag, Cu, Pt and Cd) has attracted extensive attention in biological fields. Up to now, various templates (e.g., dendrimers, polymers, DNAs, proteins and peptides) with different configurations and spaces have been applied to prepare MNCs with the advantages of facile preparation, controllable size, good water-solubility and biocompatibility. Herein, we focus on the recent advances in the template-assisted synthesis of MNCs, including the templates used to synthesize MNCs, and their applications in biosensing, bioimaging, and disease theranostics. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of template-assisted synthesized MNCs are highlighted. We believe that this review could not only arouse more interest in MNCs but also promote their further development and applications by presenting the recent advances in this area to researchers from various fields, such as chemistry, material science, physiology, biomedicine, and so on.

Immobilization of Lepidium draba peroxidase on a novel Zn-MOF nanostructure

In the present study, ultrasound irradiation was utilized to synthesize a novel zinc metal-organic framework (MOF). Scanning electron microscopic images, exhibited homogenous morphology with a nano-sized distribution of the Zn-MOF structure as also confirmed by X-ray diffraction patterns. Following, physical immobilization of Lepidium draba peroxidase (LDP) were optimized on the Zn-MOF in phosphate buffer (50 mM, pH 6.5), ratio amount of MOF/enzyme; 7/1 after shaking for 15 min at 25 °C, with high protein loading of 109.9 mg/g and immobilization yield of 93.3%. Immobilized enzyme (IE) exhibited more than 330% enhanced specific activity and also exhibited more than 150% specific affinity to its substrate (3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine) with respect to the free enzyme (FE). Optimum temperature of the IE was obtained at 20 °C while its was 25 °C for the FE, and thermostability of the IE augmented at temperature of 30 °C and 40 °C by the factors of 104 and 108% respectively. pH stability under neutral and basic condition and storage stability of the IE improved with respect to the FE as well as its structural stability (T_m; 73 °C for IE vs. 63 °C for FE). Furthermore, immobilization is accompanied with alteration on the enzyme structure as revealed by the intrinsic and extrinsic fluorescence spectra.

Review on Polymeric Citrate Precursor and Sono-chemical Methods for the Synthesis of Nanomaterials

Background:

he properties of materials depend on the way of construction and the arrangement of atoms and molecules. Therefore, it is very important to know synthesis methods for the preparation of novel materials as per their desired structure. The low-temperature synthesis methods, such as polymeric citrate precursor and sonochemical methods are efficient enough to control the preparation of novel nanoparticles with morphological differences that leads to the novel devices with desired technological performances. These methods are simple, very less expensive and are easy to handle to operate for the synthesis of nanoparticles as per the expected morphology and dimensions.

Methods:

Polymeric citrate precursor method, a chelate-based method involves the reaction between mixed cations with citric acid, and then these cations are cross-linked with the help of ethylene glycol for the esterification process. Gel composites were heated which burns the organic moieties leaving behind the nanoparticles, and burning gels becomes essential for the reduction of nanoparticles. The sonochemical method, on the other hand, uses ultrasonic the irradiation results. The acoustic cavitation and high intensity ultrasound has been exploited for the preparation of different series of nanoparticles.

Results:

Commonly known for polymeric citrate method as Pechini gel pyrolysis method gives the evidence of versatile and elegant method for the synthesis of nanoparticles. The sonochemical method provides an unusual route of nanoparticle fabrication without bulk and that too with low temperature and pressure or less reaction time. These two methods have better control for the desired shape morphology and size and provide many opportunities for the use of these prepared nanoparticles in various aspects of science and technology.

Conclusion:

Polymeric citrate precursor and sonochemical methods are efficient to reduce to promote desirable reaction conditions and reduce the metal ions for the fabrication of nanoparticles. The prepared nanoparticles by using such low-cost elegant methods are uniform with a small size distribution, reproducible with good yield as per the demanded applications.

A novel synthesis of new antibacterial nanostructures based on Zn-MOF compound: design, characterization and a high performance application

In this study, the novel zinc metal-organic frameworks (MOF) nanostructure has been employed, which was developed using an affordable, environmental friendly, efficient and fast method of ultrasound-assisted reverse micelle (UARM). These nanostructures were identified with various techniques such as FT-IR, XRD, BET, SEM, TG-DSC, TEM and EDS. It was found that the Zn-MOF samples have favorable physicochemical properties. The impact of experimental parameters of the UARM method is effective on the resulting properties, such as high surface area of the products that increases the interactions between the Zn-MOF nanostructure and bacteria.Their antibacterial activities were investigated using diffusion methods in agar and also with dilutions of Zn-MOF samples. Antibiotics (tetracycline and ampicillin) and their anti-biofilm effects were evaluated using microplate method. Obtained results revealed that the Zn-MOF nanostructures have high antibacterial properties which, could be due to the nature of the applied Zn-MOF as well as the optimization process. The Zn- MOF nanostructures could be a novel antibacterial material as biocatalyst processes.

Chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol nanofibrous membranes: towards green super-adsorbents for toxic gases

Removal of hazardous gases from the atmosphere has become a big challenge for scientists and engineers alike. Eco-friendly nature of biopolymers has given a new dimension to the debate within the environmental science area but attempts mainly failed to cleanse the air stream of toxic gases as a consequence of design imperfections. In this work, green electrospun nanofibrous membranes based on chitosan (Cs)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite with a very high carbon monoxide adsorption capacity (much higher than the values one may expect from activated carbon and zeolite adsorbents, and also higher than that of the metal-organic framework) are developed. 2^k−1 factorial design, response surface and desirability function analyses are merged to optimize the electrospinning parameters for functional-based carbon monoxide elimination. The best Cs/PVA adsorbent obtained through multi-objective optimization has a very high desirability value level of 0.953. Optimized electrospinning parameters are: Voltage = 17 kV, spinning distance = 13 cm, flow rate = 0.2 mL/h, and PVA concentration = 6 wt.%; and optimized properties are: maximum thermal stability = 329 °C, minimum fiber diameter = 9.8 nm, and maximum surface area = 2204 m²/g. This work opens a new era for taking the next steps towards the design and optimization of green super-adsorbents for gaseous contaminations.

Metal Substitution as the Method of Modifying Electronic Structure of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Targeted modification of electronic structure is an important step in the optimization of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for photovoltaic, sensing, and photocatalytic applications. The key parameters to be controlled include the band gap, the absolute energy position of band edges, the excited state charge separation, and degree of hybridization between metal and ligand sites. Partial metal replacement, or metal doping, within secondary building units is a promising, yet relatively unexplored route to modulate these properties in MOFs. Therefore, in the present study, a general method for selecting metal dopant is worked out in theory and validated by experiment, retaining MIL-125 and UiO-66 as the model systems. Metal mixing enables targeted optimization of key electronic structure parameters. This method is applicable to any MOF architecture and can serve as a roadmap for future synthesis of MOFs with predefined properties.

Fabrication of a new superparamagnetic metal-organic framework with core-shell nanocomposite structures: Characterization, biocompatibility, and drug release study

The Superparamagnetic CoFe₂O₄NPs@Mn-Organic Framework core-shell nanocomposites that had potential application in targeted drug-delivery were synthesized by layer to layer method. The structure and composition of the obtained microspheres were characterized by SEM, TEM, DLS, XRD, VSM, FTIR, and TG analysis. Results showed that the structures have a high degree crystalline, high temperature stability, magnetics and core-shell nanocomposites. Therefore, it is an excellent candidate for drug delivery systems. Afterwards, Daunorubicin (as a drug model) was laden in the MOFs by a Simple stirring. For comparison of magnetic properties of MOFs for drug delivery, an external magnetic field applied to the plate to evaluate the efficiency. The external magnetic field significantly increases anti-tumor activity of formulation (drug+ MOFs). The results showed that MOFs are biocompatible, which endue MOFs great potential in targeting drug-delivery systems with enhanced efficiency.

A novel synthesis of a new thorium (IV) metal organic framework nanostructure with well controllable procedure through ultrasound assisted reverse micelle method

Reverse micelle (RM) and ultrasound assisted reverse micelle (UARM) were applied to the synthesis of novel thorium nanostructures as metal organic frameworks (MOFs). Characterization with different techniques showed that the Th-MOF sample synthesized by UARM method had higher thermal stability (354°C), smaller mean particle size (27nm), and larger surface area (2.02×10³m²/g). Besides, in this novel approach, the nucleation of crystals was found to carry out in a shorter time. The synthesis parameters of UARM method were designed by 2^k-1 factorial and the process control was systematically studied using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and response surface methodology (RSM). ANOVA showed that various factors, including surfactant content, ultrasound duration, temperature, ultrasound power, and interaction between these factors, considerably affected different properties of the Th-MOF samples. According to the 2^k-1 factorial design, the determination coefficient (R²) of the model is 0.999, with no significant lack of fit. The F_value of 5432, implied that the model was highly significant and adequate to represent the relationship between the responses and the independent variables, also the large R-adjusted value indicates a good relationship between the experimental data and the fitted model. RSM predicted that it would be possible to produce Th-MOF samples with the thermal stability of 407°C, mean particle size of 13nm, and surface area of 2.20×10³m²/g. The mechanism controlling the Th-MOF properties was considerably different from the conventional mechanisms. Moreover, the MOF sample synthesized using UARM exhibited higher capacity for nitrogen adsorption as a result of larger pore sizes. It is believed that the UARM method and systematic studies developed in the present work can be considered as a new strategy for their application in other nanoscale MOF samples.

Aptamer-based determination of tumor necrosis factor α using a screen-printed graphite electrode modified with gold hexacyanoferrate

An aptamer based method is presented for the voltammetric determination of human tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). Layers of gold hexacyanoferrate (AuHCF) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were directly immobilized on a graphite screen-printed electrode (SPE). Through the strong interaction between cyanide ions (CN^-) of AuHCF and AuNPs, gold nanoparticles are assembled on the modified SPE, and this allows for the covalent immobilization of thiolated aptamers against TNF-α (TNF-α-Apt). On incubation of the aptasensor with of TNF-α, the Apt/TNF-α complex is formed, and this leads to a hindered electron transfer and to a decrease in the peak current of the redox probe. Under optimum conditions and at a typical working as low as 0.1 V (vs. a silver pseudo electrode), the electrode works in the 10 pg.mL^-1 to 40 μg.mL^-1 TNF-α concentration range, with a 5.5 pg.mL^-1 detection limit. The high sensitivity and wide detection range of this method allowed TNF-α to in human serum be detected even at very low concentrations. Self-assembly of red-blood-cell-like (NH4)[Fe2(OH)(PO4)2]·2H2O architectures from 2D nanoplates by sonochemical method

Red-blood-cell-like (RBC-like) (NH₄)[Fe₂(OH)(PO₄)₂]·2H₂O architectures assembled from 2D nanoplates are successfully synthesized via a facile sonochemical method. XRD measurement indicates that the as-prepared sample is well crystallized with a monoclinic structure. The morphology of the sample is characterized by SEM analysis, which shows that the (NH₄)[Fe₂(OH)(PO₄)₂]·2H₂O particles exhibit a unique biconcave red blood cell morphology with an average diameter of 4um and thickness of 1.5um. The detailed time-dependent experiments are conducted to investigate the morphological evolution process. It reveals that the ultrasonic time is crucial to the morphology of the products, and the RBC-like (NH₄)[Fe₂(OH)(PO₄)₂]·2H₂O proceeds in steps of crystallization, formation of thin plates, and the subsequent self-assembly. Compared to the available methods that are typically time-consuming and complicated, this smart sonochemical strategy proposed herein is efficient and simple. Moreover, these obtained special RBC-like architectures will be more fascinating for application in many areas.
