MOF-derived In2S3 nanorods for photocatalytic removal of dye and antibiotics

FeOCl/MOF-derived In2S3 photocatalysts with high H2O2 adsorption: Degradation mechanism, H2O2 activation process

The FeOCl-based photo-Fenton heterojunction catalyst holds great promise for effective water pollution treatment. A novel heterojunction FeOCl/MOF-In2S3 (F/M-I) was fabricated by coating hollow MOF-In2S3 nanoflowers onto the surface of FeOCl. Under the optimal conditions, the maximum photo-Fenton degradation rate constants of FeOCl/MOF-In2S3 for oxytetracycline (OTC) within 20 min is 0.88192 L mg-1·min-1, which are 3.2 and 2.5 times that of pure FeOCl (0.27357 L mg-1·min-1) and MOF-In2S3 (0.35222 L mg-1·min-1). Density functional theory (DFT) results confirm that the electron-rich nature of MOF-In2S3 accelerates the cycle between Fe (III)/Fe (II)of FeOCl, promoting H2O2 adsorption by FeOCl/MOF-In2S3 and generating more hydroxyl radicals (·OH) for pollutant degradation. Based on the results of DFT, combined with the results of the reactive oxidation species scavenger (ROSs), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Mott-Schottky curves, the separation and transfer behavior of photoexcited charges in FeOCl/MOF-In2S3 heterojunction and the possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism were investigated. Finally, a Z-scheme heterostructure is proposed to elucidate the catalytic mechanism. This study provides a new perspective on designing and synthesizing semiconductor materials for water treatment by photo-Fenton catalysis.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution of In2S3 by Decorating In2O3 with Rich Oxygen Vacancies

The hydrogen (H2) evolution rates of photocatalysts suffer from weak oxidation and reduction ability and low photogenerated charge carrier separation efficiency. Herein, by combining band-gap structure optimization and vacancy modulation through a one-step hydrothermal method, In2O3 containing oxygen vacancy (Ov/In2O3) is simply introduced into In2S3 to promote photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Specifically, the change in the sulfur source ratio can induce the coexistence of Ov/In2O3 and In2S3 in a high-temperature hydrothermal process. Under light irradiation, In2S3@Ov/In2O3-0.1 nanosheets hold a remarkable average H2 evolution rate up to 4.04 mmol g-1 h-1, which is 32.14, 11.91, and 2.25-fold better than those of pristine In2S3, In2S3@Ov/In2O3-0.02, and In2S3@Ov/In2O3-0.25 nanosheets, respectively. The ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence (PL) spectra reveal that the formation of Ov/In2O3 in In2S3 optimizes the band-gap structure and accelerates the migration of the photogenerated charge carrier of In2S3@Ov/In2O3-x nanosheets, respectively. Both the enhancement of oxidation and reduction ability and photogenerated charge carrier separation ability are responsible for the remarkable improvement in photocatalytic H2 evolution performance. This work provides a new strategy to prepare a composite of metal sulfide and metal oxide through a one-step hydrothermal method.

Metal-Organic Frameworks-Derived Nanocarbon Materials and Nanometal Oxides for Photocatalytic Applications

Harnessing low-density solar energy and converting it into high-density chemical energy through photocatalysis has emerged as a promising avenue for the production of chemicals and remediation of environmental pollution, which contributes to alleviating the overreliance on fossil fuels. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained widespread application in the field of photocatalysis due to their photostability, tunable structures, and responsiveness in the visible light range. However, most MOFs exhibit relatively low response to light, limiting their practical applications. MOFs-derived nanomaterials not only retain the inherent advantages of pristine MOFs but also show enhanced light adsorption and responsiveness. This review categorizes and summarizes MOFs-derived nanomaterials, including nanocarbons and nanometal oxides, providing representative examples for the synthetic strategies of each category. Subsequently, the recent research progress on MOFs-derived materials in photocatalytic applications are systematically introduced, specifically in the areas of photocatalytic water splitting to H2, photocatalytic CO2 reduction, and photocatalytic water treatment. The corresponding mechanisms involved in each photocatalytic reaction are elaborated in detail. Finally, the review discusses the challenges and further directions faced by MOFs-derived nanomaterials in the field of photocatalysis, highlighting their potential role in advancing sustainable energy production and environmental remediation.

Engineering highly dispersed AgI nanoparticles on hierarchical In2S3 hollow nanotube to construct Z-scheme heterojunction for efficient photodegradation of insecticide imidacloprid

Increasing the exposure of active sites and improving the intrinsic activity are necessary considerations for designing a highly efficient photocatalyst. Herein, an In2S3/AgI stable Z-scheme heterojunction with highly dispersed AgI nanoparticles (NPs) is synthesized by the mild self-templated and in-situ ion exchange strategy. Impressively, the optimized In2S3/AgI-300 Z-scheme heterojunction exhibits superior photodegradation activity (0.020 min-1) for the decomposition of insecticide imidacloprid (IMD), which is extremely higher than that of pure In2S3 (0.002 min-1) and AgI (0.013 min-1). Importantly, the three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D EEMs) fluorescence spectra, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), the photoelectrochemical tests, radical trapping experiment, and electron spin resonance (ESR) technique are performed to clarify the possible degradation pathway and mechanism of IMD by the In2S3/AgI-300 composite. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is attributed to the highly dispersed AgI NPs on hierarchical In2S3 hollow nanotube and the construction of In2S3/AgI Z-scheme heterojunction, which can not only increase active site exposure, but also improve its intrinsic activity, facilitating rapid charge transfer rate and excellent electron-hole pairs separation efficiency. Meanwhile, the practical application potential of the In2S3/AgI-300 composite is systematically investigated. This study opens a new insight for designing catalysts with high photocatalytic performance through a convenient approach.

Principles of Design and Synthesis of Metal Derivatives from MOFs

Materials derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated exceptional structural variety and complexity and can be synthesized using low-cost scalable methods. Although the inherent instability and low electrical conductivity of MOFs are largely responsible for their low uptake for catalysis and energy storage, a superior alternative is MOF-derived metal-based derivatives (MDs) as these can retain the complex nanostructures of MOFs while exhibiting stability and electrical conductivities of several orders of magnitude higher. The present work comprehensively reviews MDs in terms of synthesis and their nanostructural design, including oxides, sulfides, phosphides, nitrides, carbides, transition metals, and other minor species. The focal point of the approach is the identification and rationalization of the design parameters that lead to the generation of optimal compositions, structures, nanostructures, and resultant performance parameters. The aim of this approach is to provide an inclusive platform for the strategies to design and process these materials for specific applications. This work is complemented by detailed figures that both summarize the design and processing approaches that have been reported and indicate potential trajectories for development. The work is also supported by comprehensive and up-to-date tabular coverage of the reported studies.

Rich Indium-Vacancies In2 S3 with Atomic p-n Homojunction for Boosting Photocatalytic Multifunctional Properties

Design and development of highly efficient photocatalytic materials are key to employ photocatalytic technology as a sound solution to energy and environment related challenges. This work aims to significantly boost photocatalytic activity through rich indium vacancies (V_In ) In₂ S₃ with atomic p-n homojunction through a one-pot preparation strategy. Positron annihilation spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance reveal existence of V_In in the prepared photocatalysts. Mott-Schottky plots and surface photovoltage spectra prove rich V_In In₂ S₃ can form atomic p-n homojunction. It is validated that p-n homojunction can effectively separate carriers combined with photoelectrochemical tests. V_In decreases carrier transport activation energy (CTAE) from 0.64 eV of V_In -poor In₂ S₃ to 0.44 eV of V_In -rich In₂ S₃ . The special structure endows defective In₂ S₃ with multifunctional photocatalysis properties, i.e., hydrogen production (872.7 µmol g^-1 h^-1 ), degradation of methyl orange (20 min, 97%), and reduction in heavy metal ions Cr(VI) (30 min, 98%) under simulated sunlight, which outperforms a variety of existing In₂ S₃ composite catalysts. Therefore, such a compositional strategy and mechanistic study are expected to offer new insights for designing highly efficient photocatalysts through defect engineering.

Recent advances in performance improvement of Metal-organic Frameworks to remove antibiotics: Mechanism and evaluation

Antibiotic pollution is a serious global problem, which may threaten the health of human and ecosystem. Thereinto, water pollution is the most common way. Thus, it is necessary to develop effective methods to remove antibiotics from the natural aqueous environments. Metal-organic Frameworks (MOFs) - based adsorption and photocatalysis strategies have been demonstrated to be efficient, environmental and promising methods to solve antibiotic pollution and repair the environment. In this review, several strategies to improve the properties of MOFs for removal were summarized and discussed. And the removal mechanisms were also discussed. Besides, new and more reliable evaluation methods of MOFs to remove antibiotics were presented, including preferential adsorption (q_p), quantum yields (QY), space time yields (SY) and figure of merit (FOM). This paper provides alternative perspectives for researchers to improve the properties of MOFs and raise analytic efficiency of antibiotic removal.

The Effectiveness of MOFs for the Removal of Pharmaceuticals from Aquatic Environments: A Review Focused on Antibiotics Removal

There is an increasing level of various pollutants and their persistence in aquatic environments. The improper use of antibiotics and their inefficient metabolism in organisms result in their release into aquatic environments. Antibiotic abuse has led to hazardous effects on human health. Thereby, efficient removal of pharmaceuticals, particularly antibiotics, from wastewater and contaminated water bodies is greatly interested in international research communities. Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, as a hybrid group of material containing metallic center and organic linkers, offer a porous structure that is highly efficient for removing different pollutants from contaminated water and wastewater streams. This article aims to review the recent advancement in using MOF-based adsorbents and catalysts for the removal of pharmaceuticals, especially antibiotics, from polluted water. Applying MOFs-based structures for removing antibiotics using photocatalytic removal and adsorptive removal techniques will be discussed and evaluated in this review paper. Various MOF-based materials such as functionalized MOFs, MOF-based composites, magnetic MOF-based composites, MOFs templated-metal oxide catalysts for removing pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and antibiotics from contaminated aqueous media are discussed. Furthermore, effective operational parameters on the adsorption, adsorption mechanisms, adsorption isotherms, and thermodynamic parameters are explained and discussed. Finally, in the concluding remarks, the challenges and future outlooks of using MOFs-based adsorbents and catalysts for removing antibiotics are summarized.

MOFs-Derived Fusiform In2 O3 Mesoporous Nanorods Anchored with Ultrafine CdZnS Nanoparticles for Boosting Visible-Light Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

The development of efficient visible-light-driven photocatalysts is one of the critically important issues for solar hydrogen production. Herein, high-efficiency visible-light-driven In₂ O₃ /CdZnS hybrid photocatalysts are explored by a facile oil-bath method, in which ultrafine CdZnS nanoparticles are anchored on NH₂ -MIL-68-derived fusiform In₂ O₃ mesoporous nanorods. It is disclosed that the as-prepared In₂ O₃ /CdZnS hybrid photocatalysts exhibit enhanced visible-light harvesting, improves charges transfer and separation as well as abundant active sites. Correspondingly, their visible-light-driven H₂ production rate is significantly enhanced for more than 185 times to that of pristine In₂ O₃ nanorods, and superior to most of In₂ O₃ -based photocatalysts ever reported, representing their promising applications in advanced photocatalysts.

A review of metal organic framework (MOFs)-based materials for antibiotics removal via adsorption and photocatalysis

Antibiotic abuse has led to serious water pollution and severe harm to human health; therefore, there is an urgent need for antibiotic removal from water sources. Adsorption and photodegradation are two ideal water treatment methods because they are cheap, simple to operate, and reusable. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent adsorbents and photocatalysts because of their high porosity, adaptability, and good crystal form. The aim of this study is to suggest ways to overcome the limitations of adsorption and photocatalysis treatment methods by reviewing previous applications of MOFs to antibiotic adsorption and photocatalysis. The different factors influencing these processes are also discussed, as well as the various adsorption and photocatalysis mechanisms. This study provides a valuable resource for researchers intending to use MOFs to remove antibiotics from water bodies.

Modified MIL-100(Fe) for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline under visible-light irradiation

Iron-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with low cost and excellent photocatalytic potential are extremely attractive in the field of energy utilization and environmental remediation. In this study, a novel In₂S₃/MIL-100(Fe) photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by a facile solvothermal method for the first time. Several technologies (such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) were used to characterize the as-obtained samples and demonstrate the successful combination of MIL-100(Fe) and In₂S₃. Experimental results showed that 18% of tetracycline (TC) was adsorbed under dark condition and another 70% of TC was degraded under visible-light irradiation when treating 100 mL of TC solution (10 mg/L) with 30 mg of In₂S₃/MIL-100(Fe) composites. The corresponding TC removal efficiency was almost 1.9 and 1.6 times higher than that of pure MIL-100(Fe) and In₂S₃, respectively. The mechanism investigations revealed that the heterojunction composite exhibited superior charge transfer than either MIL-100(Fe) or In₂S₃, and this caused more efficient separation of electron-hole pairs. As a result, more radicals and holes were generated in the composite, leading to better photocatalytic performance. This work highlights the powerful combination of MOFs and semiconductor, which is a promising approach to fabricate heterojunction photocatalyst for wastewater purification.

Rational Ionothermal Copolymerization of TCNQ with PCN Semiconductor for Enhanced Photocatalytic Full Water Splitting

Photocatalytic full water splitting remains the perfect way to generate oxygen (O₂) and hydrogen (H₂) gases driven by sunlight to address the future environmental issues as well as energy demands. Owing to its exceptional properties, polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) has been one of the most widely investigated semiconductor photocatalysts. Nevertheless, blank PCN characteristically displays restrained photocatalytic performance due to high-density defects in its framework that may perhaps perform the part of the recombination midpoint for photoproduced electron-hole pairs. Therefore, to overcome this problem, a simple approach to introduce 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) with an electron-withdrawing characteristic modifier into the pristine PCN framework by the ionothermal method to enhance its optical, conductive, and photocatalytic properties has been undertaken. Results show that such integration of TCNQ results in the delocalization of the π-conjugated structure; significant changes in its chemical electronic configuration, band gap, and surface area; and enhanced production of electrons under visible light. As a result of this facile integration, our best sample (CNU-TCNQ_9.0) produced a hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 164.6 μmol h^-1 for H₂ and an oxygen evolution rate (OER) of 14.8 μmol h^-1 for O₂, which were found to be 2.4- and 2.6-fold greater than those produced with pure carbon nitride (CNU) sample, respectively. Hence, this work provides a reasonable alternative method to synthesize and design novel CNU-TCNQ backbone photocatalyst for organic photosynthesis, CO₂ reduction, hydrogen evolution, etc.
