Facile synthesis of mesoporous Fe-based MOFs loading bismuth with high speed adsorption of iodide from solution

High efficiency removal of organic and inorganic iodine with ferrate[Fe(VI)] through oxidation and adsorption

I- is a halogen species existing in natural waters, and the transformation of organic and inorganic iodine in natural and artificial processes would impact the quality of drinking water. Herein, it was found that Fe(VI) could oxidize organic and inorganic iodine to IO3-and simultaneously remove the resulted IO3- through Fe(III) particles. For the river water, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent, and shale gas wastewater treated by 5 mg/L of Fe(VI) (as Fe), around 63 %, 55 % and 71 % of total iodine (total-I) had been removed within 10 min, respectively. Fe(VI) was superior to coagulants in removing organic and inorganic iodine from the source water. Adsorption kinetic analysis suggested that the equilibrium adsorption amount of I- and IO3- were 11 and 10.1 μg/mg, respectively, and the maximum adsorption capacity of IO3- by Fe(VI) resulted Fe(III) particles was as high as 514.7 μg/mg. The heterogeneous transformation of Fe(VI) into Fe(III) effectively improved the interaction probability of IO3- with iron species. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation suggested that the IO3- was mainly adsorbed in the cavity (between the γ-FeOOH shell and γ-Fe2O3 core) of Fe(III) particles through electrostatic adsorption, van der Waals force and hydrogen bond. Fe(VI) treatment is effective for inhibiting the formation of iodinated disinfection by-products in chlor(am)inated source water.

A dispersive solid-phase extraction method for the determination of Aristolochic acids in Houttuynia cordata based on MIL-101(Fe): An analytes-oriented adsorbent selection design

In view of the molecular structure of Aristolochic acid I (AA-I) and Aristolochic acid II (AA-II), MIL-101(Fe) was selected as the sorbent to develop a dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) method for capturing the two analytes from Houttuynia cordata. The interactions between the sorbent and analytes were investigated by FT-IR, XPS and UV-Vis DRS spectra. The optimized method demonstrated good linearity with R² > 0.9999. The limit of detections (LODs) were 0.007 mg/L and 0.014 mg/L for AA-I and AA-II, respectively, lower than the limit stipulated by Chinese Pharmacopoeia (0.001 %, w/w). The recoveries for AA-I and AA-II were within the range of 73.3-106.4 %. The precisions of intra-day and inter-day were 0.9-5.8 % and 2.1-5.8 %, respectively. Thus, the established method demonstrated to be efficient and reliable to determine AA-I and AA-II in Houttuynia cordata.

A bifunctionalised Pb-based MOF for iodine capture and dye removal

A 2-dimensional Pb(II) metal-organic framework, [Pb(bdc)_0.5(py-Phen)NO₃]_n (SM-3), was synthesized under solvothermal conditions using a mixed ligand approach. SM-3 was assembled using dinuclear SBUs [Pb₂(COO)₂]^2-, an oxygen donor H₂bdc = 1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid, and nitrogen donor py-Phen = pyrazino[2,3-f][1,10]-phenanthroline linkers. SM-3 was characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, powder-X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, SEM, EDS, TEM, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Crystallographic studies confirmed that SM-3 displays a 2D layered structure with unique anagostic (Pb⋯H) interactions. Interestingly, the presence of abundant π-electron-rich rings embellished with free -N donor sites in the framework makes SM-3 an excellent adsorbent that exhibits adsorption performance for iodine and dyes. The experimental results show that SM-3 reversibly adsorbs radioactive iodine in the solution and vapor phases and exhibits selective adsorption performance for hazardous cationic dyes, namely, methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine-B (Rh-B), from aqueous solution. Moreover, the possible mechanism of iodine and dye adsorption was also discussed in detail. Thus, this work is remarkable for coordination chemists to engineer layered MOFs for adsorption purposes and expands their potential characteristics by converting them into 2D MOF nanosheets to further enhance the adsorption of hazardous pollutants for environment protection.

Exploiting a Multi-Responsive Oxadiazole Moiety in One Three-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework for Remedies to Three Environmental Issues

Multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) rely on the properties of metal centers (nodes) and/or linkers (struts) for their diverse applications in the emerging field of research. Currently, there is a huge demand for MOF materials in the field of capture/fixation/sensing of air pollutants, harmful chemical effluents, and nuclear waste. However, it is a challenging task to utilize one MOF for providing remedies to all these issues. On the basis of our current research activities, we have identified that an oxadiazole moiety-a five-membered ring with two different heteroatoms (O and N)-in a carboxylate linker can be the key to generating such MOF materials for its (a) inherent polarizable nature and molecular docking ability and (b) photoluminescence properties. In this work, we report a 3D MOF {[Co₂(oxdz)₂(tpbn)(H₂O)₂]·4H₂O}_n (1), self-assembled at room temperature from a three-component reaction, with an oxadiazole moiety (where H₂oxdz = 4,4'-(1,3,4-oxadiazole-2,5-diyl)dibenzoic acid and tpbn = N,N',N,"N″'-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4-diaminobutane). The inherent polarizable nature of the oxadiazole moiety in 1 has been efficiently exploited for (i) multimedia iodine capture and (ii) fixation of CO₂ under solvent-free and ambient conditions. On the other hand, the luminescent nature of the framework is found to be an efficient, highly preferred turn-on sensor for the ultra-fast detection of ketones with a limit as low as parts-per-trillion (mesitylene oxide: 447 ppt; cycloheptanone: 4.7 ppb; cyclohexanone: 17.2 ppb; acetylacetone: 18 ppb).

Recent advances in the removal of radioactive iodine by bismuth-based materials

Nowadays, the demand for nuclear power is continue increasing due to its safety, cleanliness, and high economic benefits. Radioactive iodine from nuclear accidents and nuclear waste treatment processes poses a threat to humans and the environment. Therefore, the capture and storage of radioactive iodine are vital. Bismuth-based (Bi-based) materials have drawn much attention as low-toxicity and economical materials for removing and immobilizing iodine. Recent advances in adsorption and immobilization of vapor iodine by the Bi-based materials are discussed in this review, in addition with the removal of iodine from solution. It points out the neglected areas in this research topic and provides suggestions for further development and application of Bi-based materials in the removal of radioactive iodine.

Highly Sensitive Adsorption and Detection of Iodide in Aqueous Solution by a Post-Synthesized Zirconium-Organic Framework

Effective methods of detection and removal of iodide ions (I^-) from radioactive wastewater are urgently needed and developing them remains a great challenge. In this work, an Ag⁺ decorated stable nano-MOF UiO-66-(COOH)₂ was developed for the I^- to simultaneously capture and sense in aqueous solution. Due to the uncoordinated carboxylate groups on the UiO-66-(COOH)₂ framework, Ag⁺ was successfully incorporated into the MOF and enhanced the intrinsic fluorescence of MOF. After adding iodide ions, Ag⁺ would be produced, following the formation of AgI. As a result, Ag⁺@UiO-66-(COOH)₂ can be utilized for the removal of I^- in aqueous solution, even in the presence of other common ionic ions (NO₂^-, NO₃^-, F^-, SO₄^2-). The removal capacity as high as 235.5 mg/g was calculated by Langmuir model; moreover, the fluorescence of Ag⁺@UiO-66-(COOH)₂ gradually decreases with the deposition of AgI, which can be quantitatively depicted by a linear equation. The limit of detection toward I^- is calculated to be 0.58 ppm.

Highly Effective Removal of Ofloxacin from Water with Copper-Doped ZIF-8

Residual antibiotics in wastewater have gained widespread attention because of their toxicity to humans and the environment. In this work, Cu-doped ZIF-8s (Cu-ZIF-8s) were successfully synthesized by the impregnation of Cu²⁺ in ZIF-8 and applied in the removal of ofloxacin (OFX) from water. Remarkably, excellent adsorption performance was obtained in Cu-ZIF-8s, especially for Cu-ZIF-8-1, in which the adsorption capacity (599.96 mg·g⁻¹) was 4.2 times higher than that of ZIF-8 and superior to various adsorbents reported previously. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm follow the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model, respectively. Furthermore, the removal efficiencies of OFX in Cu-ZIF-8-1 reached over 90% at low concentrations. It was revealed that electrostatic interaction and complexation play important roles in the adsorption process. In addition, the material can be regenerated by simple methods. Therefore, the obtained Cu-doped MOFs may have a promising application in the treatment of antibiotic-containing wastewater.

Adsorptive removal of sulfosalicylic acid from aqueous medium by iron(III)-loaded magnetic chitosan/graphene oxide

In this study, an iron(III)-loaded magnetic chitosan/graphene oxide composite (Fe-MCG) was synthesized and applied for the adsorptive removal of sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) in aqueous solution. The results obtained from the application of various characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) prove the successful formation of the composite with enhanced microstructure and superparamagnetic properties. The adsorption capacity of Fe-MCG towards SSA via batch mode reaches up to 135 mg/g at 293 K. The adsorption of SSA onto Fe-MCG is driven by monolayer adsorption with the chemical and physical adsorption processes both playing active roles. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were observed to best describe the equilibrium adsorption and kinetic processes, respectively. The values obtained for the associated thermodynamic parameters confirm that the adsorptive process is spontaneous, exothermic and entropy-increasing. The efficacy and reusability of the spent Fe-MCG was studied using 0.01 mol/L NaOH solution. The kinetic process for the desorption of SSA from Fe-MCG is well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Based on the experimental results and XPS analysis, the underlying mechanisms for the uptake of SSA onto Fe-MCG involve electrostatic forces, complexation, π-π stacking, and hydrogen bonding. Overall, the excellent features of Fe-MCG enhance its potential as an adsorbent for the sequestration of SSA in environmental media.

Boron nitride nanosheets decorated MIL-53(Fe) for efficient synergistic ibuprofen photocatalytic degradation by persulfate activation

In this study, based on one-step hydrothermal method, boron nitride nanosheets (BNNs) and MIL-53(Fe) composites (BNFe-X) were successfully prepared and the catalytic performance of BNFe-X on persulfate (PS) activation for ibuprofen (IBP) photodegradation was investigated. The introduction of BNNs changed the morphology of MIL-53(Fe) to be a unique prism-like structure and enhanced the degradation efficiency of IBP, which followed the pseudo-first-order rate kinetics. Among the prepared composites, BNFe-3 (3% BNNs) exhibited the highest IBP degradation activity and possessed strong stability after four cycles. Over 99% IBP removal was achieved at the irradiation time of 60 min. The promoted decomposition rate of IBP could be ascribed to be the activation of PS and the enhanced electrons transfer efficiency between BNNs and MIL-53(Fe). The scavenger studies and electron spin-resonance spectroscopy (ESR) demonstrated the generation of SO₂^-, OH and O₂^-, and all these radicals had the different contributions in IBP degradation. Based on the LC-MS-MS and TOC results, the possible decomposition pathways of IBP in BNFe-3/PS system were proposed. This work suggested that the BNNs/Fe-based MOFs composites and PS system had great potential in organic pollutants degradation in aqueous solution.

Iron metal-organic framework supported in a polymeric membrane for solid-phase extraction of anti-inflammatory drugs

A solid-phase extraction methodology using a MIL-101(Fe)/PVDF membrane was proposed as a useful alternative for the simultaneous determination of naproxen, diclofenac, and ibuprofen, three anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), in wastewater samples by HPLC-CCD analysis. The MIL-101(Fe) was prepared by a rapid microwave-assisted method and supported in a polymeric PVDF membrane. The prepared material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The factors that affect the extraction of the NSAIDs using the MIL-101(Fe)/PVDF membrane as the sample volume, the solution pH and the elution solvent were studied in detail. The selected conditions were 50 mL of sample solution at pH 3 and 5 mL of methanol: acetone (30:70, v v^-1) acidified with formic acid at 2% as elution solvent. The analytical method was linear with determination coefficients (r² ≥ 0.998) in the calibration ranges from 2 to 100 ng mL^-1 for naproxen, 20-200 ng mL^-1 for diclofenac, and 100-300 ng mL^-1 for ibuprofen. The intra and inter-day precision (repeatability and reproducibility, respectively) of the method (RSD%, n = 5) were lower than 4.8% and 7.1%, respectively. The accuracy reported as recovery percentages ranged from 82 to 118%, and the limits of detection were between 1.8 and 32.3 ng mL^-1. Moreover, MIL-101(Fe)/PVDF membrane exhibited improved adsorption efficiency compared to that of its analog MIL-101(Cr)/PVDF and the pristine PVDF membranes, obtaining in an easy and rapid (60 min) way a low-cost and low-toxic adsorbent with excellent stability, reusability, mechanic resistance, and simple operation which shows excellent performance.

Selective removal of phosphate from aqueous solution by MIL-101(Fe)/bagasse composite prepared through bagasse size control

MIL-101(Fe)/sugarcane bagasse (SCB) with high adsorption capacity and selectivity toward phosphate was prepared through in-situ synthesis method. Effects of bagasse size on the morphology and performances of the composites were investigated, and adsorption behavior and mechanism of phosphate on the composite prepared at the optimum bagasse size were studied. Results showed that composite prepared with bagasse size of 200-300 mesh (MIL-101(Fe)/SCB₃) showed much higher adsorption capacity than SCB, blank MIL-101(Fe) and the composites prepared with the other bagasse size, which was due to the more positively charged surface and the more exposed adsorption active sites including FeOH_x and exchangeable Cl^-. Co-ions experimental results illustrated that the as prepared MIL-101(Fe)/SCB₃ showed high adsorption affinity toward phosphate, and the common cationic and anionic ions exhibited negligible effects on phosphate adsorption capacity and rate. The optimum pH range for phosphate adsorption on MIL-101(Fe)/SCB₃ was from 3.0 to 10.0, and in this range Fe release was less than 0.03%. Adsorption mechanism showed that phosphate was adsorbed mainly through electrostatic force, ion-exchange, and inner-sphere surface complex. Simulated wastewater treatment experiment showed that MIL-101(Fe)/SCB₃ could efficiently remove phosphate from aqueous solution.
