Two water-stable Zn(II)-based MOFs as highly selective luminescent probe for the dual detection of glyoxal and dichromate ions in aqueous solution

Alginate-modified surfactants functionalized metal-organic framework-based fluorescent film sensors for detection and adsorption of volatile aldehydes in water

Volatile aldehydes have an adverse impact on both human health and the environment, therefore, a fast, straightforward, highly accurate detection technique for the simultaneous detection and removal of several aldehydes is eagerly anticipated. Herein, novel APGF@ZIF-8 and APOF@ZIF-8 sensing materials were developed by coating fluorescent alginate-modified surfactants (APGF and APOF) into the ZIF-8 MOFs to produce quite porous fluorescent sensors (SBET up to 1519 m2/g). The detection capacity of the prepared sensors for benzaldehyde, glyoxal, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde has been examined. The detection mechanism was suggested as hydrogen bonding formation between the sensors and volatile aldehydes as confirmed by Gaussian calculations. All the fluorescence spectra of aldehydes display remarkable linear detection relationships in the range of 0.05-200 μM with the limits of detection (LOD) values in the range of 0.001-0.18 μM (0.106-10.44 ppb). These sensors were utilized successfully to detect multiple volatile aldehydes in river water samples with satisfactory recoveries of 96-107 %. Interestingly, fluorescent APGF@ZIF-8/CS and APOF@ZIF-8/CS films as portable disposable removal techniques for benzaldehyde, glyoxal, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde from water were fabricated. APOF@ZIF-8/CS exhibited an excellent formaldehyde adsorption capacity of 58.30 mg/g and an adsorption removal efficiency of 93.5 %. The adsorption process of biosorbent on various aldehydes was fitted by Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The adsorption kinetics followed Pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

Recent progress in high-performance environmental impacts of the removal of radionuclides from wastewater based on metal-organic frameworks: a review

The nuclear industry is rapidly developing and the effective management of nuclear waste and monitoring the nuclear fuel cycle are crucial. The presence of various radionuclides such as uranium (U), europium (Eu), technetium (Tc), iodine (I), thorium (Th), cesium (Cs), and strontium (Sr) in the environment is a major concern, and the development of materials with high adsorption capacity and selectivity is essential for their effective removal. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently emerged as promising materials for removing radioactive elements from water resources due to their unique properties such as tunable pore size, high surface area, and chemical structure. This review provides an extensive analysis of the potential of MOFs as adsorbents for purifying various radionuclides rather than using different techniques such as precipitation, filtration, ion exchange, electrolysis, solvent extraction, and flotation. This review discusses various MOF fabrication methods, focusing on minimizing environmental impacts when using organic solvents and solvent-free methods, and covers the mechanism of MOF adsorption towards radionuclides, including macroscopic and microscopic views. It also examines the effectiveness of MOFs in removing radionuclides from wastewater, their behavior on exposure to high radiation, and their renewability and reusability. We conclude by emphasizing the need for further research to optimize the performance of MOFs and expand their use in real-world applications. Overall, this review provides valuable insights into the potential of MOFs as efficient and durable materials for removing radioactive elements from water resources, addressing a critical issue in the nuclear industry.

A water-soluble naphthalimide fluorescent probe for Cr2O72- and Fe3+ based on inner filter effect

A probe 3 (2-ethoxy-N-(2-(2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethyl)-1,3-dioxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[de] isoquinolin-6-yl)benzamide) that could selectively respond to Cr₂O₇^2- and Fe³⁺ was reported in this paper. The selectivity, pH titration, concentration titration, detection limit, time dependence, quenching constant and recognition mechanism of probe 3 for Cr₂O₇^2- and Fe³⁺ were studied in CH₃CN/HEPES buffer solution. The results showed that Cr₂O₇^2- and Fe³⁺ could rapidly quench the fluorescence of probe 3 through the inner filter effect (IFE). The quenching kept constant after 30 s, and the quenching constants were 7.99 × 10³ L^.mol^-1 and 4.13 × 10³ L^.mol^-1, respectively. The detection limits of probe 3 for Cr₂O₇^2- and Fe³⁺ were 1.15 μmol^.L^-1 and 1.95 μmol^.L^-1, respectively, which were lower than the maximum allowable concentrations in drinking water stipulated by EPA. The determination results of Cr₂O₇^2- and Fe³⁺ in water samples indicated that probe 3 could be used as a potential detection tool in practical applications.

Highly sensitive detection of nitrobenzene by a series of fluorescent 2D zinc(ii) metal-organic frameworks with a flexible triangular ligand

Four fluorescent zinc(ii) metal–organic frameworks, namely [Zn(HCIA)(4,4′-bipy)] (1), [Zn₂(CIA)(OH)(1,4-bibz)_1.5]·H₂O (2), [Zn(CIA)(OH) (4,4′-bbpy)] (3), and [Zn₂(HCIA) (4,4′-bimp)]·H₂O (4), were prepared hydrothermally with a flexible triangular ligand (H₃CIA) and a series of linear N-donor ligands (H₃CIA = 5-(2-carboxybenzyloxy) isophthalic acid, 4,4′-bipy = 4,4′-bipydine, 1,4-bibz = 1,4-bis(1-imidazoly)benzene; 4,4′-bbpy = 4,4′-bis (imidazolyl) biphenyl; 4,4′-bimp = 4,4′-bis (imidazole-1-ylethyl) biphenyl). Structural analyses revealed that complex 1 exhibited a 2D brick-like network structure based on the basic bimetallic ring, 2 was also a 2D interspersed structure from the 1D tubular structure, compound 3 possessed a 2D (4,4) network with 4,4′-bbpy occupying the holes, and complex 4 displayed a 2D network from the 1D ladder-like chain. The thermal stabilities and fluorescent properties of these complexes were investigated in the solid state. The fluorescent sensing experiments revealed that all Zn-MOFs could highly sensitively detect nitrobenzene in aqueous solution, which indicated that these materials can be used as fluorescent probes for the detection of nitrobenzene.

Four fluorescent 2D Zn-MOFs based on a flexible triangular ligand and linear N-donor ligands are hydrothermally prepared and used to detect nitrobenzene in aqueous solution with high sensitivity, demonstrating their potential as fluorescent sensors.
