Effects of microdefects and grain size on the phase transition properties of Nano-VO2(M)

Tuning the Intrinsic Stochasticity of Resistive Switching in VO2 Microresistors

Vanadium dioxide (VO2) microresistors exhibit resistive switching above a certain threshold voltage, allowing them to emulate neurons in neuromorphic systems. However, such devices present intrinsic cycle-to-cycle variations in their resistances and threshold voltages, which can be detrimental or beneficial, depending on their use. Here, we study this stochasticity in VO2 microresistors with various grain sizes and dimensions, through high-resolution electrical and optical measurements across numerous cycles. Our results highlight that the cycle-to-cycle variations in threshold voltage increase as the grain size becomes comparable to the device dimensions. We also present observations of multimodal threshold voltage distributions in the smaller-length resistors. To understand the underlying phenomenon, we investigate the relationship between the device insulating resistance and threshold voltage distributions, showing that these modes could correspond to distinct percolation paths and filaments. Our findings provide the first experimentally verified guidelines for designing VO2 devices with minimized/maximized stochasticity, depending on the targeted application.

Highly reproducible and CMOS-compatible VO2-based oscillators for brain-inspired computing

With remarkable electrical and optical switching properties induced at low power and near room temperature (68 °C), vanadium dioxide (VO2) has sparked rising interest in unconventional computing among the phase-change materials research community. The scalability and the potential to compute beyond the von Neumann model make VO2 especially appealing for implementation in oscillating neural networks for artificial intelligence applications, to solve constraint satisfaction problems, and for pattern recognition. Its integration into large networks of oscillators on a Silicon platform still poses challenges associated with the stabilization in the correct oxidation state and the ability to fabricate a structure with predictable electrical behavior showing very low variability. In this work, the role played by the different annealing parameters applied by three methods (slow thermal annealing, flash annealing, and rapid thermal annealing), following the vanadium oxide atomic layer deposition, on the formation of VO2 grains is studied and an optimal substrate stack configuration that minimizes variability between devices is proposed. Material and electrical characterizations are performed on the different films and a step-by-step recipe to build reproducible VO2-based oscillators is presented, which is argued to be made possible thanks to the introduction of a hafnium oxide (HfO2) layer between the silicon substrate and the vanadium oxide layer. Up to seven nearly identical VO2-based devices are contacted simultaneously to create a network of oscillators, paving the way for large-scale implementation of VO2 oscillating neural networks.

Sensing Utilities of Cesium Lead Halide Perovskites and Composites: A Comprehensive Review

Recently, the utilization of metal halide perovskites in sensing and their application in environmental studies have reached a new height. Among the different metal halide perovskites, cesium lead halide perovskites (CsPbX3; X = Cl, Br, and I) and composites have attracted great interest in sensing applications owing to their exceptional optoelectronic properties. Most CsPbX3 nanostructures and composites possess great structural stability, luminescence, and electrical properties for developing distinct optical and photonic devices. When exposed to light, heat, and water, CsPbX3 and composites can display stable sensing utilities. Many CsPbX3 and composites have been reported as probes in the detection of diverse analytes, such as metal ions, anions, important chemical species, humidity, temperature, radiation photodetection, and so forth. So far, the sensing studies of metal halide perovskites covering all metallic and organic-inorganic perovskites have already been reviewed in many studies. Nevertheless, a detailed review of the sensing utilities of CsPbX3 and composites could be helpful for researchers who are looking for innovative designs using these nanomaterials. Herein, we deliver a thorough review of the sensing utilities of CsPbX3 and composites, in the quantitation of metal ions, anions, chemicals, explosives, bioanalytes, pesticides, fungicides, cellular imaging, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), toxic gases, humidity, temperature, radiation, and photodetection. Furthermore, this review also covers the synthetic pathways, design requirements, advantages, limitations, and future directions for this material.
