Introduction of continuous excited-state intermolecular proton transfer process into open yttrium-terephthalate framework for ratiometric fluorescent fluorion detection

Impact of Ligand Substitution and Metal Node Exchange in the Electronic Properties of Scandium Terephthalate Frameworks

The search for sustainable alternatives to established materials is a sensitive topic in materials science. Due to their unique structural and physical characteristics, the composition of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be tuned by the exchange of metal nodes and the functionalization of organic ligands, giving rise to a large configurational space. Considering the case of scandium terephthalate MOFs and adopting an automatized computational framework based on density-functional theory, we explore the impact of metal substitution with the earth-abundant isoelectronic elements Al and Y, and ligand functionalization of varying electronegativity. We find that structural properties are strongly impacted by metal ion substitution and only moderately by ligand functionalization. In contrast, the energetic stability, the charge density distribution, and the electronic properties, including the size of the band gap, are primarily affected by the termination of the linker molecules. Functional groups such as OH and NH2 lead to particularly stable structures thanks to the formation of hydrogen bonds and affect the electronic structure of the MOFs by introducing midgap states.

Introducing a Pyrazinoquinoxaline Derivative into a Metal-Organic Framework: Achieving Fluorescence-Enhanced Detection for Cs+ and Enhancing Photocatalytic Activity

Conventional photoresponsive materials have low photon utilization due to irregular distribution of photoactive groups, which severely limits the related real applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can modulate the regular arrangement of functional groups to improve the electron transport paths and enhance the photon utilization, which provides strong support for the development of photoactive materials with excellent performance. In this work, one effective strategy for constructing a photoactive MOF had been developed via the utilization of Cd2+ and pyrazinoquinoxaline tetracarboxylic acid. The structural advantages of the Cd-MOF, such as a porous structure, abundant subject-object interaction sites, and a stable framework, ensure the prerequisite for various applications, while the better synergistic effect of Cd3 clusters and the pyrazinoquinoxaline derivative ensures efficient electron transfer efficiency. Therefore, by virtue of these structural advantages, the Cd-MOF can achieve fluorescence quenching detection for a variety of substrates, such as Fe3+, Cr2O72-, MnO4-, nitrofuran antibiotics, and TNP explosives, while fluorescence enhancement detection can be achieved for halogen ions, Cs+, Pb2+, and NO2-. In addition, the Cd-MOF can be used as a photocatalyst to successfully achieve the photocatalytic conversion of benzylamine to N-benzylbenzimidate under mild conditions. Thus, the Cd-MOF as a whole shows the possibility of application as a diverse fluorescence detection and photocatalyst and also illustrates the feasibility of preparing high-performance photoactive materials using the pyrazinoquinoxaline derivative.

Taking Advantage of a Luminescent ESIPT-Based Zr-MOF for Fluorochromic Detection of Multiple External Stimuli: Acid and Base Vapors, Mechanical Compression, and Temperature

Luminescent materials responsive to external stimuli have captivated great attention owing to their potential implementation in noninvasive photonic sensors. Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs), a type of porous crystalline material, have emerged as one of the most promising candidates for these applications. Moreover, LMOFs constructed with organic linkers that undergo excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer (ESIPT) reactions are particularly relevant since changes in the surrounding environment induce modifications in their emission properties. Herein, an ESIPT-based LMOF, UiO-66-(OH)2, has been synthesized, spectroscopically and photodynamically characterized, and tested for detecting multiple external stimuli. First, the spectroscopic and photodynamic characterization of the organic linker (2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (DHT)) and the UiO-66-(OH)2 MOF demonstrates that the emission properties are mainly governed by the enol → keto tautomerization, occurring in the organic linker via the ESIPT reaction. Afterward, the UiO-66-(OH)2 MOF proves for the first time to be a promising candidate to detect vapors of acid (HCl) and base (Et3N) toxic chemicals, changes in the mechanical compression (exercised pressure), and changes in the temperature. These results shed light on the potential of ESIPT-based LMOFs to be implemented in the development of advanced optical materials and luminescent sensors.

Vitamin B6-based fluorescence chemosensor for selective detection of F- ions: design, synthesis, and characterization

The present paper reports on the synthesis and characterization of a new chemosensor for fluoride ions, a hydrazone derived from pyridoxal 5'-phosphate and benzothiazole. The structure of the chemosensor was confirmed using 1H and 13C NMR, FT-IR and mass spectroscopy. The conformational diversity of the chemosensor influencing the sensor activity was studied by the quantum chemistry methods on the B3LYP/6-311++G(d, p) (H, C, N, O, P, S) level, and the optimal structure of the chemosensor was chosen. The selective capability of detecting F- in the aqueous solution, which also contains Cl-, Br-, I-, NCS-, ClO4-, HSO4-, and NO3- was demonstrated. The detection limit (LOD) for fluoride ions was 0.22 µM as determined by the 3σ method. The turn-on effect in the presence of fluoride ions is based on the deprotonation of the chemosensor and its subsequent aggregation in DMSO. In addition, the chemosensor was used for the detection and estimation of F- in real samples using fluorescence spectroscopy.

A 12-Connected [Y4((μ3-OH)4]8+ Cluster-Based Luminescent Metal-Organic Framework for Selective Turn-on Detection of F- in H2O

Fluoride ion (F^-) is one of the most hazardous elements in potable water. Over intake of F^- can give rise to dental fluorosis, kidney failure, or DNA damage. As a result, developing affordable, equipment-free and credible approaches for F^- detection is an important task. In this work, a new three dimensional rare earth cluster-based metal-organic framework assembled from lanthanide Y(III) ion, and a linear multifunctional ligand 3-nitro-4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid, formulated as {[Y(μ₃-OH)]₄[Y(μ₃-OH)(μ₂-H₂O)_0.25(H₂O)_0.5]₄[μ₄-nba]₈}_n (1), where H₂nba = 3-nitro-4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid, has been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized through infrared spectroscopy (IR), elemental and thermal analysis (EA), power X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analyses. X-ray diffraction structural analysis revealed that 1 crystallizes in tetragonal system with P4¯2₁m space group, and features a 3D framework with 1D square 18.07(3)² Ų channels running along the [0,0,1] or c-axis direction. The structure of 1 is built up of unusual eight-membered rings formed by two types of {Y₄O₄} clusters connected to each other via 12 μ₄-nba^2- and 4 μ₃-OH^- ligands. Three crystallographic independent Y³⁺ ions display two coordinated configurations with a seven-coordinated distorted monocapped trigonal-prism (YO₇) and an eight-coordinated approximately bicapped trigonal-prism (YO₈). 1 is further stabilized through O-H⋯O, O-H⋯N, C-H⋯O, and π⋯π interactions. Topologically, MOF 1 can be simplified as a 12-connected 2-nodal Au₄Ho topology with a Schläfli symbol {4²⁰·6²⁸·8¹⁸}{4³}₄ or a 6-connected uninodal pcu topology with a Schläfli symbol {4¹²·6³}. The fluorescent sensing application of 1 was investigated to cations and anions in H₂O. 1 exhibits good luminescence probing turn-on recognition ability toward F^- and with a limit detection concentration of F^- down to 14.2 μM in aqueous solution (K_ec = 11403 M^-1, R² = 0.99289, σ = 0.0539). The findings here provide a feasible detection platform of LnMOFs for highly sensitive discrimination of F^- in aqueous media.

Novel Approach for Detecting Vapors of Acids and Bases with Proton-Transfer Luminescent Dyes Encapsulated within Metal-Organic Frameworks

Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) are one of the most promising materials for being implemented as active layers in the fabrication of photonic devices such as luminescent sensors of harmful chemicals. It is highly desirable that these materials undergo quantifiable spectroscopic (absorption or emission) changes in the presence of vapors of those analytes, as in many industrial processes, these toxic compounds are in the gas phase. Although great progresses have been achieved in the field, in most of the examples reported hitherto, the detection of chemicals by LMOFs is attained in solution. Herein, we present a novel approach consisting of the encapsulation of proton transfer dyes (8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt, HPTS, and 3-hydroxyflavone, 3-HF) within the pores of two distinct MOFs. The trapped proton transfer dyes (PT-dyes) may exist as different structures (enol, anion, or zwitterion), each of these exhibiting unique optical properties. Indeed, our findings reveal that the dyes can be encapsulated as anionic or enol species. Remarkably, the PT-dye@MOF composites exhibit a high luminescence quantum yield (up to 30%), which is sensitive (showing shifting in the emission wavelengths with a concomitant quenching/enhancement of the intensity) in the presence of vapors of an acid (HCl) and a base (triethylamine). These results open a novel avenue for the development of smarter vapoluminescent MOF-based materials.

Confinement of Luminescent Guests in Metal-Organic Frameworks: Understanding Pathways from Synthesis and Multimodal Characterization to Potential Applications of LG@MOF Systems

This review gives an authoritative, critical, and accessible overview of an emergent class of fluorescent materials termed "LG@MOF", engineered from the nanoscale confinement of luminescent guests (LG) in a metal-organic framework (MOF) host, realizing a myriad of unconventional materials with fascinating photophysical and photochemical properties. We begin by summarizing the synthetic methodologies and design guidelines for representative LG@MOF systems, where the major types of fluorescent guest encompass organic dyes, metal ions, metal complexes, metal nanoclusters, quantum dots, and hybrid perovskites. Subsequently, we discuss the methods for characterizing the resultant guest-host structures, guest loading, photophysical properties, and review local-scale techniques recently employed to elucidate guest positions. A special emphasis is paid to the pros and cons of the various methods in the context of LG@MOF. In the following section, we provide a brief tutorial on the basic guest-host phenomena, focusing on the excited state events and nanoscale confinement effects underpinning the exceptional behavior of LG@MOF systems. The review finally culminates in the most striking applications of LG@MOF materials, particularly the "turn-on" type fluorochromic chemo- and mechano-sensors, noninvasive thermometry and optical pH sensors, electroluminescence, and innovative security devices. This review offers a comprehensive coverage of general interest to the multidisciplinary materials community to stimulate frontier research in the vibrant sector of light-emitting MOF composite systems.
