Abstract
The sensitivity of fluorescent sensors is crucial for their applications. In this study, we propose a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-coated optical fibre-hybrid waveguide-fibre sensing structure for ultrasensitive fluorescence detection. In such a structure, the MIP coated-hybrid waveguide acts as a sensing probe, and the two co-axially connected optical fibres act as a highly efficient probing light launcher and a fluorescence signal collector, respectively. For the dual-layered waveguide sensing probe, the inner hybrid waveguide core was fabricated using a hollow quartz nanoparticle-hybridized polymer composite with a low refractive index, and the outer MIP coating layer possesses a high refractive index. Simulations showed that this dual-layer configuration can cause light propagation from the waveguide core to the MIP sensing layer with an efficiency of 98%, which is essential for detection. To validate this concept, we adopted a popular fluorescent dye, rhodamine B, to evaluate the sensing characteristics of the proposed system. We achieved an extremely low limit of detection of approximately 1.3 × 10-19 g ml-1 (approximately 0.27 aM).

Abstract
Developing a sensitive portable sensor for the determination of food additives is very important. Herein, a simple and sensitive electrochemical sensor has been constructed based on a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets for the simultaneous determination of sunset yellow (SY) and rhodamine B (RhB) in phosphate buffer solution (pH = 4). The cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry (CV and DPV) results revealed two well-resolved anodic peaks for SY and RhB with a remarkable increase in oxidation signals of these colorants. Based on this, an electrochemical method was developed for the first time for the simultaneous detection of SY and RhB. Applicability of the sensor was confirmed in various concentrations of two analytes in two linear ranges of 1-20 μM for SY and 1-30 μM for RhB with a limit of detection (LOD) of 10.0 nM and 20.0 nM, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed sensor was successfully employed for the simultaneous detection of SY and RhB in food samples with recoveries of 93.1-106.0% indicating promising potential in practical application.

Abstract
Materials derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated exceptional structural variety and complexity and can be synthesized using low-cost scalable methods. Although the inherent instability and low electrical conductivity of MOFs are largely responsible for their low uptake for catalysis and energy storage, a superior alternative is MOF-derived metal-based derivatives (MDs) as these can retain the complex nanostructures of MOFs while exhibiting stability and electrical conductivities of several orders of magnitude higher. The present work comprehensively reviews MDs in terms of synthesis and their nanostructural design, including oxides, sulfides, phosphides, nitrides, carbides, transition metals, and other minor species. The focal point of the approach is the identification and rationalization of the design parameters that lead to the generation of optimal compositions, structures, nanostructures, and resultant performance parameters. The aim of this approach is to provide an inclusive platform for the strategies to design and process these materials for specific applications. This work is complemented by detailed figures that both summarize the design and processing approaches that have been reported and indicate potential trajectories for development. The work is also supported by comprehensive and up-to-date tabular coverage of the reported studies.

Abstract
Transition metal-ion based nanocomposites are widely used owing to their ease of synthesis and cost-effectiveness in the sensor development. In this study, we have synthesized bi-metallic (iron and zinc) metal organic framework (MOF) nanorods-nanoparticles (denoted as Fe2Zn-MIL-88B) with a well-defined structure and characterized them. The bimetallic material nanocomposite (Fe2Zn-MIL-88B, nafion (Nf), and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)) was fabricated on the electrode (glassy carbon electrode (GCE) or screen printed carbon electrode (SPCE)) surface within 10 min at room temperature. The Fe2Zn-MIL-88B/Nf/MWCNT@GCE showed an excellent electron transfer mechanism compared to a bare GCE and bare SPCE. The Fe2Zn-MIL-88B based nanocomposite electrode triggers the oxidation of the environmental carcinogenic molecule triclosan (TCS). Under optimized conditions, the sensor has a limit of detection of 0.31 nM and high selectivity to TCS in the presence of other interfering agents. The sensor has a good day-to-day TCS detection reproducibility. Fe2Zn-MIL-88B was stable even after 11 months of synthesis and detected TCS with similar sensitivity. The fabrication of the Fe2Zn-MIL-88B/Nf/MWCNT nanocomposite was successfully translated from the GCE to SPCE. TCS was detected in human plasma and commercial products such as soaps, skin care products, shampoos, and tooth pastes.

Abstract
Water bodies are being polluted rapidly by disposal of toxic chemicals with their huge entrance into drinking water supply chain. Among these pollutants, heavy metal ions (HMIs) are the most challenging one due to their non-biodegradability, toxicity, and ability to biologically hoard in ecological systems, thus posing a foremost danger to human health. This can be addressed by robust, sensitive, selective, and reliable sensing of metal ions which can be achieved by Metal organic frameworks (MOF) based electrochemical sensors. In the present era, MOFs have caught greater interest in a variety of applications including sensing of hazardous pollutants such as heavy metal ions. So, in this review article, types, synthesis and working mechanism of MOF based sensors is explained to give general overview with updated literature. First time, detailed study is done for sensing of metal ions such as chromium, mercury, zinc, copper, manganese, palladium, lead, iron, cadmium and lanthanide by MOFs based electrochemical sensors. The use of MOFs as electrochemical sensors has attractive success story along with some challenges of the area. Considering these challenges, we attempted to highlight the milestone achieved and shortcomings along with future prospective of the MOFs for employing it in electrochemical sensing devices for HMIs. Finally, challenges and future prospects have been discussed to promote the development of MOFs-based sensors in future.

Abstract
A new 3D metal-organic framework (Nd-MOF) {[Nd2L2]·2NH2(CH3)2·3H2O} was successfully established via a solvothermal method with Nd3+ ion and 5-(bis(4-carboxybenzyl) amino)-isophthalicacid (H4L), and has also been characterized by X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), IR and photoluminescence(PL)spectrum. The neodymium ions are free of coordinated solvents, and the Nd-MOF exhibits strong near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence. Besides, Its NIR fluorescence property shows low temperature resistance, which is favorable for being used in the low temperature environment. Besides, the fluorescence lifetime of Nd-MOF is 6.03 μs, and the quantum yield is 1.2%. The small quantum yield may owe to large energy gap between the T1 of the ligand H4L and the resonance energy level 4F3/2 of the Nd3+ ion, or due to large crystal size of the Nd-MOF.

Abstract
Nowadays, ammonia-responsive biopolymer-based intelligent active films are of great interest for their huge potential in maintaining and monitoring the freshness of seafood. However, it is still a challenge to create biopolymer-based intelligent active films with favorable color stability, antibacterial and visual freshness indication functions. Herein, cobalt-based metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) nanosheets with ammonia-sensitive and antibacterial functions were successfully synthesized and then embedded into carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) matrix to develop high performance and multifunctional CMC-based intelligent active films. The influence of Co-MOF addition on the structure, physical and functional characters of CMC film was comprehensively studied. The results showed that the Co-MOF nanofillers were homogeneously embedded within the CMC matrix, bringing about remarkable promotion on tensile strength (from 45.3 to 62.2 MPa), toughness (from 0.7 to 2.3 MJ/m3), water barrier and UV-blocking performance of CMC film. Notably, the obtained CMC/Co-MOF nanocomposite films also presented excellent long-term color stability, antibacterial activity (with the bacteriostatic efficiency of 99.6 % and 99.3 % against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus), and ammonia-sensitive discoloration performance. Finally, the CMC/Co-MOF nanocomposite films were successfully applied for real-time visual monitoring of shrimp freshness. The above results demonstrate that the CMC/Co-MOF nanocomposite films possess huge potential applications in intelligent active packaging.

Abstract
In the past decade, novel nano-engineering protocols have been actively synergized with fluorescence spectroscopic techniques to yield higher intensity from radiating dipoles, through the process termed plasmon-enhanced fluorescence (PEF). Consequently, the limit of detection of analytes of interest has been dramatically improvised on account of higher sensitivity rendered by augmented fluorescence signals. Recently, metallic thin films sustaining surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have been creatively hybridized with such PEF platforms to realize a substantial upsurge in the global collection efficiency in a judicious technology termed surface plasmon-coupled emission (SPCE). While the process parameters and conditions to realize optimum coupling efficiency between the radiating dipoles and the plasmon polaritons in SPCE framework have been extensively discussed, the utility of disruptive nano-engineering over the SPCE platform and analogous interfaces such as 'ferroplasmon-on-mirror (FPoM)' as well as an alternative technology termed 'photonic crystal-coupled emission (PCCE)' have been seldom reviewed. In light of these observations, in this focus review, the myriad nano-engineering protocols developed over the SPCE, FPoM and PCCE platform are succinctly captured, presenting an emphasis on the recently developed cryosoret nano-assembly technology for photo-plasmonic hotspot generation (first to fourth). These technologies and associated sensing platforms are expected to ameliorate the current biosensing modalities with better understanding of the biophysicochemical processes and related outcomes at advanced micro-nano-interfaces. This review is hence envisaged to present a broad overview of the latest developments in SPCE substrate design and development for interdisciplinary applications that are of relevance in environmental as well as biological heath monitoring.

Abstract
A dual-mode biosensor constructed based on photoelectrochemical (PEC) and electrochemical (EC) property was developed for assaying circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), which is commonly used for triple-negative breast cancer diagnosis. Ionic liquid functionalized two-dimensional Nd-MOF nanosheets were successfully synthesized through a template-assisted reagent substituting reaction. Nd-MOF nanosheets integrated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were able to improve photocurrent response and supply active sites for assembling sensing elements. To achieve selective detection of ctDNA, thiol-functionalized capture probes (CPs) were immobilized on the Nd-MOF@AuNPs modified glassy carbon electrode surface, thereby generating a "signal-off" photoelectrochemical biosensor for ctDNA under visible light irradiation. After the recognition of ctDNA, ferrocene-labeled signaling probes (Fc-SPs) were introduced into the biosensing interface. After hybridization between ctDNA and Fc-SPs, the oxidation peak current of Fc-SPs generated from square wave voltammetry can be employed as a "signal-on" electrochemical signal for ctDNA quantification. Under the optimized conditions, a linear relationship was obtained to the logarithm of ctDNA concentration in between 1.0 fmol L-1 to 10 nmol L-1 for the PEC model and 1.0 fmol L-1 to 1.0 nmol L-1 for the EC model. The dual-mode biosensor can provide accurate results for ctDNA assays, effectively eliminating the probable occurrence of false-positive or false-negative results in single-model assays. By switching DNA probe sequences, the proposed dual-mode biosensing platform can serve as a strategy for detecting other DNAs and possesses broad applications in bioassay and early disease diagnosis.

Abstract
There is a growing demand for the development of intelligent active packaging films to maintain and monitor the freshness of meat food. Herein, nano Co-based MOF (ZIF67) with ammonia-sensitive and antimicrobial functions was successfully synthesized and then integrated into cellulose acetate (CA) matrix to prepare intelligent active films. The impacts of ZIF67 incorporation on the structure, physical and functional characteristics of CA film were fully investigated. The results demonstrated that the ZIF67 nanofillers were evenly dispersed in CA matrix, resulting in remarkable improvement on tensile strength, toughness, thermal stability, UV barrier, hydrophobicity and water vapor barrier ability of CA film. Furthermore, the prepared CA/ZIF67 films exhibited superb antimicrobial and ammonia-sensitive functions. The CA/ZIF67 intelligent films turned their color from blue at beginning to brown during progressive spoilage of shrimp. These results revealed that the CA/ZIF67 films with excellent antimicrobial and ammonia-sensitive functions could be applied in intelligent active food packaging.

Abstract
Worldwide demand for oil, coal, and natural gas has increased recently because of odd weather patterns and economies recovering from the pandemic. By using these fuels at an astonishing rate, their reserves are running low with each passing decade. Increased reliance on these sources is contributing significantly to both global warming and power shortage problems. It is vital to highlight and focus on using renewable energy sources for power production and storage. This review aims to discuss one of the cutting-edge technologies, metal-air batteries, which are currently being researched for energy storage applications. A battery that employs an external cathode of ambient air and an anode constructed of pure metal in which an electrolyte can be aqueous or aprotic electrolyte is termed as a metal-air battery (MAB). Due to their reportedly higher energy density, MABs are frequently hailed as the electrochemical energy storage of the future for applications like grid storage or electric car energy storage. The demand of the upcoming energy storage technologies can be satisfied by these MABs. The usage of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in metal-air batteries as a bi-functional electrocatalyst has been widely studied in the last decade. Metal ions or arrays bound to organic ligands to create one, two, or three-dimensional structures make up the family of molecules known as MOFs. They are a subclass of coordination polymers; metal nodes and organic linkers form different classes of these porous materials. Because of their modular design, they offer excellent synthetic tunability, enabling precise chemical and structural control that is highly desirable in electrode materials of MABs.

Abstract
The sensitive detection and degradation of synthetic dyes are pivotal to maintain safety owing to the adverse side effects they impart on living beings. In this work, we developed a sensitive electrochemical sensor for the nanomolar-level detection of rhodamine B (RhB) using a dual-functional, silver-decorated zinc oxide (Ag/ZnO) composite-modified, screen-printed carbon electrode. The plasmon-enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutant RhB was also performed using this nanocomposite prepared by embedding different weight percentages (1, 3, and 5 wt%) of Ag nanoparticles on the surface of a three-dimensional (3D), hierarchical ZnO nanostructure based on the photoreduction approach. The structure and morphology of an Ag/ZnO nanocomposite were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), elemental mapping, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrochemical sensor exhibited a very high sensitivity of 151.44 µAµM-1cm-2 and low detection limit of 0.8 nM towards RhB detection. The selectivity, stability, repeatability, reproducibility, and practical feasibility were also analyzed to prove their reliability. Furthermore, the photocatalysis results revealed that 3 wt% of the Ag/ZnO hybrid nanostructure acquired immense photostability, reusability, and 90.5% degradation efficiency under visible light. Additionally, the pseudo-first-order rate constant of Ag-3/ZnO is 2.186 min-1 suggested promising activity in visible light photocatalysis.

Abstract
A neodymium metal-organic framework (MOFNd) was prepared using 1H-pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylic acid (H3pdc) and 2-pyrazinecarboxylic acid as ligands. Through the addition of HAuCl4 as a precursor and NaBH4 as a reducing agent, a new MOFNd-loaded nanogold (AuNPs) (Au@MOFNd) nanosol with good stability and high catalytic activity was conveniently prepared via a solvothermal-reduction method and characterized. It was found that the indicator reaction of reducing HAuCl4 by Na2SO3 to generate AuNPs was slow. Au@MOFNd strongly catalyzes this nanoreaction, and the produced AuNPs exhibit a strong resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) peak at 370 nm, and a strong surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) peak at 1617 cm-1 with the addition of the molecular probe Victoria blue 4R (VB4r). A novel SERS/RRS di-mode quantitative analysis method for glyphosate (GLY) was established by coupling this new Au@MOFNd catalytic indicator reaction with the aptamer (Apt) reaction of GLY, with SERS and RRS detection limits of 0.02 nM and 0.3 nM, respectively. It has been applied to the analysis of soil samples with a recovery rate of 93.0%-106.5% and precision of 2.2%-4.1%, and the results were satisfactory.

Abstract
The presence of organic pollutants in water and food samples is a risk for the environment. To avoid this hazard a variety of analytical tools are used for the detection of toxic organic contaminants. Herein we present a selective and sensitive electrochemical sensor based on amino group functionalized multi walled carbon nanotubes and carboxylic group functionalized multi walled carbon nanotubes (HOOC-fMWCNTs/NH2-fMWCNTs) as modifiers of the glassy carbon electrode for the detection of a toxic dye, Rhodamine B. The sensing ability of the designed sensor was examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry. The synergistic effect of HOOC-fMWCNTs and NH2-fMWCNTs (layer by layer) led to enhanced electrocatalytic activity of the modified electrode surface for Rhodamine B detection. Under optimized conditions, the graph between concentration and peak current followed a linear trend in the concentration range of 0.1 nM to 0.05 μM. The limits of detection and quantification were found to be 57.4 pM and 191.3 pM respectively. The designed sensor was also used for probing the degradation of Rhodamine B. Sodium borohydride was found to degrade Rhodamine B in neutral media under ambient conditions. The kinetics of degradation followed first order kinetics. Rhodamine B degraded to the extent of more than 80% as revealed by electrochemical and spectrophotometric techniques. The developed method is promising for the treatment of dye contaminated wastewater. Moreover, it uses only a microliter volume of the sample for analysis.

Abstract
Ultrahigh sensitivity and selectivity are the ultimate goals of sensor development. For such purposes, we propose a sensing platform in which an optical fiber-waveguide-fiber (OFWF) structure is integrated with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). The OFWF works as a highly efficient probe light launcher and signal light collector, and the MIP layer acts as a highly selective and sensitive sensing interface. In the MIP design, a high-molecular refractive index monomer (2-phenylphenoxyethyl acrylate) was copolymerized with a MIP functional monomer (acrylic acid). The resulting high-refractive index MIP layers could effectively extract the probe light from the waveguide and send it to the MIP sensing interface. Moreover, a highly elastic cross-linker (poly(ethylene glycol) 600 diacrylate) was employed to increase the MIP mesh size, which could effectively increase the penetrability of the analyte. Rhodamine B (Rh B) is widely used in the textile industry, and its contamination may lead to serious public health problems. As a proof of concept, the Rh B chromophore was used as a molecular template, and the thin MIP layer was cured on the waveguide surface by utilizing the evanescent wave of the 405 nm propagating light in the waveguide. The MIP-OFWF sensing platform afforded highly selective monitoring of the absorption spectra of the components in a mixture solution of Rh B and methyl blue. It also afforded an extremely low detection limit of approximately 6.5 × 10-17 g/mL, with an absolute mass of 20-30 ag.

Abstract
None of the currently commercialized shielding materials in Generation IV nuclear energy systems are satisfactory in their performance. Developing a candidate neutron shielding material with good heat resistance and high strength is a challenging task. In this work, various gadolinium metal–organic frameworks (Gd-MOFs) with obvious advantages, such as porous structures, organic surfaces and strong neutron-absorbing nuclei, were synthesized to constrain polyimide (PI) chains. A series of Gd-MOF/PI conjugates were subsequently assessed for their thermal stability, mechanical properties and neutron shielding performance. The increase of the Gd-MOF content improved the thermal neutron shielding ability but slightly reduced the fast neutron shielding ability. Compared with those of pure PI, the Gd-MOF/PI films demonstrate a higher glass transition temperature (Tg), which is considered the gold standard of engineering plastics. It was also observed that the tensile strength directly correlates with the Gd-MOF content, which continuously increases until a maximum is reached, and then subsequently decreases. Furthermore, the high-temperature tensile test showed that these tunable Gd-MOF/PI films are intact and robust, indicating their potential application for neutron shielding materials in Generation IV nuclear energy systems. None of the currently commercialized shielding materials in Generation IV nuclear energy systems are satisfactory in their performance.![]()
