Degradation of bisphenol A through Ti–BiOI/ZIF-8/peroxymonosulfate (PMS): Catalyst preparation, experimental design and catalytic mechanism

A review on titanium oxide nanoparticles modified metal-organic frameworks for effective CO2 conversion and efficient wastewater remediation

Environmental pollution has been increasing since last decade due to increasing industrialisation and urbanisation. Various kinds ofenvironmental pollutants including carbon dioxide (CO2), dyes, pharmaceuticals, phenols, heavy metals along with many organic and inorganic species have been discovered in the various environmental compartments which possess harmful impacts tox human health, wildlife, and ecosystems. Thus, various efforts have been made through regulations, technological advancements, and public awareness campaigns to reduce the impact of the pollution. However, finding suitable alternatives to mitigate their impacts remained a challenge. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the advanced materials with unique features such as high porosity and stability which exhibit versatile applications in environmental remediation. Their composites with titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2) have been discovered to offer potential feature such as light harvesting capacity and catalytic activity. The composite integration and properties have been confirmed through characterization using surface area analysis, scanning electron/transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and others. Thus, this work rigorously discussed potential applications of the MOF@TiO2 nanomaterials for the CO2 capture and effective utilization in methanol, ethanol, acetone, acetaldehyde, and other useful products that served as fuel to various industrial processes. Additionally, the work highlights the effective performance of the materials towards photocatalytic degradation of both organic and inorganic pollutants with indepth mechanistic insights. The article will offer significant contribution for the development of sustainable and efficient technologies for the environmental monitoring and pollution mitigation.

Activation of peroxydisulfate via BiCoFe-layered double hydroxide for effective degradation of aniline

The sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) is a promising method for the degradation of pollutants, with the development of highly efficient catalysts for persulfate activation has been widely concerned. The novel BiCoFe-LDH (BCF-x) was synthesized successfully by coprecipitation method, which can activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) efficiently to degrade aniline. Comparative analysis with pure CoFe-LDH revealed a remarkable increase in reaction rate constant by approximately 14.66 times; the degradation rate of aniline (10 mg/L) was 100% in 60 min with the condition of 0.5 g/L BCF-1.5 and 0.5 g/L PDS, due to BCF-1.5 which was characterized as a complex of CoFe-LDH and Bi2O2CO3, promoting electron transport to improve the efficiency of activated PDS. In the reaction system, SO4•-, ·OH, and 1O2 were responsible for the aniline degradation and ·OH was the primary one. Furthermore, this work proposes a reaction electron transfer catalytic mechanism, which provided a new insight and good application prospect for efficient activation of PDS for pollutant degradation.

Simultaneous degradation of binary fluoroquinolone antibiotics by B and N in-situ self-doped guar gum hydrogel

Using guar gum (GG) as the raw material and borax (B) as the cross-linker, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was in-situ loaded into the 3D network of GG hydrogel, forming a highly efficient catalytic material GG-B-ZIF-8 combined with a subsequent low-temperature calcination process. In GG-B-ZIF-8 activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system, binary norfloxacin (NOR) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) could be removed simultaneously, with the degradation efficiency of >99.9% within 1 h. This system was adaptable to a wide pH range of 3.0-9.0, and was also highly resistant to 5-20 mM Cl- and 10-40 mg/L humic acid. The degradation process was dominated by free radical O2•-, non-radical 1O2 and electron transfer, with eleven degradation products identified for NOR and nine for CIP via eight possible degradation pathways. Finally, the potential eco-toxicity of NOR, CIP and degradation intermediates was evaluated using the ECOSAR method.

Peroxymonosulfate activation by Fe-N-S co-doped tremella-like carbocatalyst for degradation of bisphenol A: Synergistic effect of pyridine N, Fe-Nx, thiophene S

Bisphenol A (BPA) has received increasing attention due to its long-term industrial application and persistence in environmental pollution. Iron-based carbon catalyst activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) shows a good prospect for effective elimination of recalcitrant contaminants in water. Herein, considering the problem about the leaching of iron ions and the optimization of heteroatoms doping, the iron, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped tremella-like carbon catalyst (Fe-NS@C) was rationally designed using very little iron, S-C₃N₄ and low-cost chitosan (CS) via the impregnation-calcination method. The as-prepared Fe-NS@C exhibited excellent performance for complete removal of BPA (20 mg/L) by activating PMS with the high kinetic constant (1.492 min^-1) in 15 min. Besides, the Fe-NS@C/PMS system not only possessed wide pH adaptation and high resistance to environmental interference, but also maintained an excellent degradation efficiency on different pollutants. Impressively, increased S-C₃N₄ doping amount modulated the contents of different N species in Fe-NS@C, and the catalytic activity of Fe-NS@C-1-x was visibly enhanced with increasing S-C₃N₄ contents, verifying pyridine N and Fe-N_x as main active sites in the system. Meanwhile, thiophene sulfur (C-S-C) as active sites played an auxiliary role. Furthermore, quenching experiment, EPR analysis and electrochemical test proved that surface-bound radicals (^·OH and SO₄^⋅-) and non-radical pathways worked in the BPA degradation (the former played a dominant role). Finally, possible BPA degradation route were proposed. This work provided a promising way to synthesize the novel Fe, N and S co-doping carbon catalyst for degrading organic pollutants with low metal leaching and high catalytic ability.

Dispersed cobalt embedded nitrogen-rich carbon framework activates peroxymonosulfate for carbamazepine degradation: cobalt leaching restriction and mechanism investigation

Metal leaching is a key issue in cobalt-based catalysts/PMS systems, which results in the decline of catalytic ability and serious secondary pollution. Hence, a nitrogen-rich carbon framework with cobalt node (Co-NC-920) with low cobalt leaching was synthesized based on zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF) and g-C₃N₄ to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ). With the restriction of nitrogen-rich carbon framework, cobalt can disperse better and form stable cobalt-nitrogen bonds, thus only 0.09 mg/L cobalt ions were leached in the solution. More than 99.9% of CBZ can be removed within 30 min of PMS addition. Further investigation revealed that ¹O₂, SO₄^•- and high-valent cobalt species were primarily responsible for CBZ degradation in the Co-NC-920/PMS system and different reactive oxygen species (ROS) were distinguished and quantified, finding ¹O₂ was predominant. The degradation process was realized by the coexistence of free radicals and non-free radicals. Moreover, CBZ degradation capacity of the catalyst was evaluated under the influence of common anions and in actual waterbody. Finally, the possible degradation pathways of CBZ were proposed and the toxicity of the intermediates was analyzed. This work provides a new approach for the synthesis of cobalt-based nitrogen-rich carbon catalysts with low leaching and high efficient.

An anode fabricated by Co electrodeposition on ZIF-8/CNTs/CF for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation

A Co@ZIF-8/CNTs-CF anode for PMS activation was prepared by Co electrodeposition on carbon felt (CF) modified with ZIF-8 and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The results showed that the fabricated Co@ZIF-8/CNTs-CF anode was an effective peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator toward tetracycline (TC) removal. Compared with that in reaction system of bare CF anode + PMS, the reaction system of Co@ZIF-8/CNTs-CF anode + PMS exhibited 3.08 times decrease in the activation energy demanded and 4.21 times increase in the reaction rate constant (k), resulting in a kinetic favorable process of PMS activation by the Co@ZIF-8/CNTs-CF anode. The enhanced activation performance of the fabricated anode was ascribed to the high contents of the pyrrolic N and low valence state of Co in the Co@ZIF-8/CNTs-CF anode. Furthermore, the influence factors on the characteristics of transformation among the generated reactive species during the anodic PMS activation process were comprehensively investigated by the quenching experiments and the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests. The results showed that the SO₄^•- and reactive oxygen-containing reactive species (O₂^•- and ¹O₂) were generated during the activation of PMS by anode and became the major contributors toward TC removal. The production of ¹O₂ was through the dismutation of O₂^•-. In addition, the EPR experiments demonstrated that O₂^•- was generated mainly through the anodic PMS activation but the electrochemically driven molecular oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) process. The fabricated Co@ZIF-8/CNTs-CF anode for PMS activation provided a reference for the wastewater treatment based on the electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs).
