Optical Phenomena in Molecule-Based Magnetic Materials

Since the last century, we have witnessed the development of molecular magnetism which deals with magnetic materials based on molecular species, i.e., organic radicals and metal complexes. Among them, the broadest attention was devoted to molecule-based ferro-/ferrimagnets, spin transition materials, including those exploring electron transfer, molecular nanomagnets, such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), molecular qubits, and stimuli-responsive magnetic materials. Their physical properties open the application horizons in sensors, data storage, spintronics, and quantum computation. It was found that various optical phenomena, such as thermochromism, photoswitching of magnetic and optical characteristics, luminescence, nonlinear optical and chiroptical effects, as well as optical responsivity to external stimuli, can be implemented into molecule-based magnetic materials. Moreover, the fruitful interactions of these optical effects with magnetism in molecule-based materials can provide new physical cross-effects and multifunctionality, enriching the applications in optical, electronic, and magnetic devices. This Review aims to show the scope of optical phenomena generated in molecule-based magnetic materials, including the recent advances in such areas as high-temperature photomagnetism, optical thermometry utilizing SMMs, optical addressability of molecular qubits, magneto-chiral dichroism, and opto-magneto-electric multifunctionality. These findings are discussed in the context of the types of optical phenomena accessible for various classes of molecule-based magnetic materials.

A Series of POM-Viologen Photo-/Electrochromic Hybrids and Hydrogels Acting as Multifunctional Sensors for Detecting UV, Hg2+, and Organic Amines

In this work, POM anions were introduced into the viologen system in order to synthesize POM-viologen hybrid compounds with excellent properties. Three new POM-viologen compounds, {CdII(tybipy)(DMF)2[β-Mo8O26]0.5Cl} (1), {CoII(tybipy)2(DMF)2[H2(β-Mo8O26)]2}·4C2H7N (2), and (tybipy)4·(β-Mo8O26) (3) (tybipy·Br = 1-thiophen-3-ylmethyl-[4,4']bipyridinyl-1-ium bromide), have been prepared by a solvothermal method, and their structures were characterized. POM anions are modified by mixing organic ligands with transition metals in compounds 1 and 2. However, compound 3 is a supramolecular structure constructed by hydrogen bonding interactions between the dissociative viologen and POM anions. These three compounds have rapid photoresponse and photochromic ability, which can be made into mixed matrix membranes and hydrogels for UV detection. The rigid sandwich devices prepared by compounds 1-3 have achieved ultrafast electrochromism and recovery. In addition, photochromic hydrogels based on compounds 1-3 can achieve ultrafast photochromic recovery. Compounds 1-3 can be used in ink-free printing and Hg2+ fluorescence detecting. Compounds 1 and 2 can also be used as organic amine detectors. Combined with photochromism and fluorescence detection of Hg2+, visual test papers for Hg2+, Cu2+, and Co2+ were successfully realized, which can improve the portability and detection speed of heavy metal ions in the actual environment.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Zero-Dimensional Antimony Halides: Structural Distortion Controlled Luminescence Thermometer

Materials emitting circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) have been intensively studied for their promising applications in various fields. However, developing tunable and responsive CPL materials in a wide wavelength range remains a great challenge. Here, a pair of chiral (R,R/S,S-DCDA)₃Sb₂Cl₁₂ (DCDA = dimethyl-1,2-cyclohexanediamine divalent cation) shows efficient broadband yellow emission with a photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of 27.6% with a CPL asymmetry factor of 3 × 10^-3. The associated chiroptical activity is attributed to the efficient chiral transfer as well as the self-trapped exciton emission originating from the large distortion of the inorganic blocks. Notably, (R,R/S,S-DCDA)₃Sb₂Cl₁₂ exhibits a large red-shift emission exceeding 100 nm upon lowering temperature. An excellent linear correlation of the PL wavelength on temperature indicates that the compounds can be used as PL thermometers, which originates from a temperature-dependent linear structural distortion of the [SbCl₆] emitter. This work inspires the potential utilization of CPL-emitting materials as responsive light sources.

Metal organic frameworks as promising sensing tools for electrochemical detection of persistent heavy metal ions from water matrices: A concise review

Water bodies are being polluted rapidly by disposal of toxic chemicals with their huge entrance into drinking water supply chain. Among these pollutants, heavy metal ions (HMIs) are the most challenging one due to their non-biodegradability, toxicity, and ability to biologically hoard in ecological systems, thus posing a foremost danger to human health. This can be addressed by robust, sensitive, selective, and reliable sensing of metal ions which can be achieved by Metal organic frameworks (MOF) based electrochemical sensors. In the present era, MOFs have caught greater interest in a variety of applications including sensing of hazardous pollutants such as heavy metal ions. So, in this review article, types, synthesis and working mechanism of MOF based sensors is explained to give general overview with updated literature. First time, detailed study is done for sensing of metal ions such as chromium, mercury, zinc, copper, manganese, palladium, lead, iron, cadmium and lanthanide by MOFs based electrochemical sensors. The use of MOFs as electrochemical sensors has attractive success story along with some challenges of the area. Considering these challenges, we attempted to highlight the milestone achieved and shortcomings along with future prospective of the MOFs for employing it in electrochemical sensing devices for HMIs. Finally, challenges and future prospects have been discussed to promote the development of MOFs-based sensors in future.

A series of naphthalenediimide-based metal-organic frameworks: synthesis, photochromism and inkless and erasable printing

Three new three-dimensional metal-organic frameworks were synthesized based on a naphthalenediimide derivative ligand, all of which exhibit photochromic behaviour due to the presence of the naphthalenediimide core. Interestingly, two of them possess significant colour changes under light, excellent stability, and appropriate photochromic lifetimes, thus showing potential for application in inkless and erasable printing media.

Advances in the Structural Strategies of the Self-Assembly of Photoresponsive Supramolecular Systems

Photosensitive supramolecular systems have garnered attention due to their potential to catalyze highly specific tasks through structural changes triggered by a light stimulus. The tunability of their chemical structure and charge transfer properties provides opportunities for designing and developing smart materials for multidisciplinary applications. This review focuses on the approaches reported in the literature for tailoring properties of the photosensitive supramolecular systems, including MOFs, MOPs, and HOFs. We discuss relevant aspects regarding their chemical structure, action mechanisms, design principles, applications, and future perspectives.
