Photocatalytic applications of heterostructure Ag2S/TiO2 nanotube arrays for U(VI) reduction and phenol degradation

Solvent-regulated self-assembled carbon nitride for photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) in water

Manufacturing high-performance and reusable materials from radioactive uranium-containing wastewater remains a significant challenge. Herein, a supramolecular self-assembly strategy was proposed, using melamine and cyanuric acid as precursors and using intermolecular hydrogen bond force to form carbon nitride (CN-D) in different solvents through a single thermal polymerization strategy. Supramolecular self-assembly method is a promising strategy to synthesize a novel carbon nitride with molecular regulatory properties. In addition, 98% of U(VI) in wastewater can be removed by using CN-D for 60 min under visible light. After five cycles of recycling, more than 95% of U(VI) can still be reduced, indicating that it has good recyclability and reusability. This study not only provides an efficient photocatalytic method of uranium reduction, but also provides a new method for self-assembly synthesis.

Enhancing Photocatalytic Antibiotics Mineralization and Water Oxidation via Constructing Interfacial Electric Field in Plate-on-Plate BiOCl/WO3 Photocatalysts

Two-dimensional materials and related plate-on-plate interfacial heterostructures offer great flexibility for integrating different atomic layers, providing an attractive scheme for the construction of built-in electric fields in photocatalysts. Here, we developed an interfacial engineering strategy to construct well-interfaced plate-on-plate BiOCl/WO₃ heterojunctions for general enhanced photocatalytic oxidation reactions. BiOCl/WO₃ heterojunctions exhibited significant enhancements in oxygen evolution and antibiotic degradation, with a rate of 9.5 times and 14.7 times higher than that of WO₃. This enhancement is attributed to the well lattice matching contact surface of WO₃ {020} plane with BiOCl {001} plane, which integrates a strong built-in electric field induced by Bi-O chemically bonds, providing atomically fast transport channels for electrons. These findings offer new guidelines for designing interfacial structures for high-performance oxidative photocatalysts and provide insights into the underlying interfacial carrier transport mechanisms.

Preparation and modification methods of defective titanium dioxide-based nanoparticles for photocatalytic wastewater treatment-a comprehensive review

The rapid population growth and industrial expansion worldwide have created serious water contamination concerns. To curb the pollution issue, it has become imperative to use a versatile material for the treatment. Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) has been recognized as the most-studied nanoparticle in various fields of science and engineering due to its availability, low cost, efficiency, and other fascinating properties with a wide range of applications in modern technology. Recent studies revealed the photocatalytic activity of the material for the treatment of industrial effluents to promote environmental sustainability. With the wide band gap energy of 3.2 eV, TiO₂ can be activated under UV light; thus, many strategies have been proposed to extend its photoabsorption to the visible light region. In what follows, this has generated increasing attention to study its characteristics and structural modifications in different forms for photocatalytic applications. The present review provides an insight into the understanding of the synthesis methods of TiO₂, the current progress in the treatment techniques for the degradation of wide environmental pollutants employing modified TiO₂ nanoparticles, and the factors affecting its photocatalytic activities. Further, recent developments in using titania for practical applications, the approach for designing novel nanomaterials, and the prospects and opportunities in this exciting area have been discussed.

Construction of Ultrafine Ag2S NPs Anchored onto 3D Network Rodlike Bi2SiO5 and Insight into the Photocatalytic Mechanism

A novel three-dimensional (3D) network rodlike Ag₂S/Bi₂SiO₅ photocatalyst with a p-n heterostructure composed of ultrafine Ag₂S nanoparticles (NPs) and Bi₂SiO₅ nanosheets was prepared using an anionic self-regulation strategy by a two-step hydrothermal process. The architecture facilitated the efficient transfer and separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The optimal Ag₂S/Bi₂SiO₅ composite (ABSO_0.10) exhibited an excellent reduction activity (93.5% Cr(VI) removal in wastewater containing 50 mg·L^-1 Cr(VI) within 90 min under visible light), which was about 11.2 and 25.6 times higher than that of the pristine Ag₂S and virgin Bi₂SiO₅, respectively. Assisted by experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, a possible photocatalytic mechanism for Cr(VI) reduction over the Ag₂S/Bi₂SiO₅ composite under visible-light irradiation was proposed.
